Breeding Ground - Reunion

- In 1980, a new rock band formed in Toronto, Canada, calling itself Breeding Ground. The original lineup consisted of lead singer John Shirreff, guitarists Chris Wardman and Hugh Gladish, bassist Jonathan Strayer, and drummer Ken Jones. Strayer and Jones were later replaced by bassist Gary Quinn and drummer Kevin Hunter. After a couple of years of playing gigs at clubs, the group landed a deal with the Mannequin Records label and released a self-titled EP. Over the next few years the band recorded a number of singles, a second EP, a couple of music videos, and even a full-length album. By the time the '80s had lived out its last hooray, so had Breeding Ground.
After releasing that debut EP in 1982, Breeding Ground went independent the next year, and several singles followed, like "Slaughter," "Reunion," "Happy Now I Know," and "Ceremony of Love." Abundant airplay on college campuses earned the group great word of mouth reviews and plenty of exposure to young adults. Still, for all its growing popularity, the bandmembers were on shaky ground. There was a split up, but some of the guys managed to pull the tattered pieces back together for another try around 1986. Breeding Ground quickly released a sophomore EP, Tales of Adventure, and finally in 1989 completed an album titled Obscurity and Flair, both released under the Fringe Product label. When things fell apart again, there was no resurgence. ~ Charlotte Dillon, All Music Guide.
We should have shot a video for this tune, seriously. John had ideas on paper but it never got beyond that point. I'll have to show Chris Tait the proper chords for it someday.
With hundreds of albums in my collection, the Reunion/Slaughter 12" single remains one of my most cherished possessions, as is a Reunion poster I must have gotten at one of the shows. Bottom line, this is still one of my favorite songs even 35 or so years later. So, yeah, a video would have been nice. But what can you do?

Damn! I finally found this great tune. Reminds me when i used to listen to CFNY 102.1
in the late 80's and early 90's
Magical times from a magical station... back in the day.
Incredible song. So New Wave and so Canadian. And so analogue in it's sound.
Love it !
Back when cfny was good station to listen too ahhhh
Lost a member yesterday, we are not so old to say goodbye Mr Davies, i remember our chats on the Danforth and wish we had more time to share. My best wishes to your family and my deepest sympathy.
John
Sorry for your loss. Loved you guys back in the day. Off to listen to "This Time Tomorrow" next.
Very sorry to read this three years later. Saw you guys more than once when I lived in London ONT.
With Robin I did not hear till now. Very sorry John.
Still brings me chills... THAT BASS GUITAR Rift!! WOW! Love it !
great song...gets stronger over the years
Still makes me smile.........and dance. Thanks John and Hugh.
What a classic, transcendent song from a great, great band. Back in the Queen St. early/mid-eighties heyday they were just about the best. Inspired me greatly into making my own music...Thanks guys.
What a track! Great band! 80's Post Punk Forever!
Still one of my favourite all time songs.
So greatly missed amazing band! I always got that feeling with them, like: OMG! that perfect New Wave sound!
Saw these guys many times back in the day. Happy times but I can't remember the bars we saw them at.
The Rivoli, Lee's Palace, Queen City Tavern, The Beverley Tavern, The Spadina Hotel, The Drake, The Horeshoe, Larry's Hideaway, The Diamond and The Turning Point to name a few in Toronto. Lots of colleges back in the earlier days.
I remember dancing and freaking out to this song at Nuts and Bolts, a great club in Toronto. I loved this song. I had the ep that this song was on. Brings back some great memories my wife and i had. Yes i'm still married to the woman i danced with to this song. LOL. Thank-you for this.
Steve Lisson I was probably a few feet away from you some of those times dancing to this amazing song. This am Temptation New Order (original version) were my jams. DJ Iain always knew what I was going to request.
That's amazing!!!! James. I'm 62 years young now and I still go back and listen to this great music. I loved that club because it played all this great music. We travelled in from the Oakville-Burlington area practically every Saturday night.
CHEERS to you and yours Steve. And who could forget that stainless steel floor.
Nuts and Bolts, the greatest club. I frequented that place often in the 80s. So many great memories. I loved the dance floor.
Still one of my favourite songs too. I have the original album it's on. Discovered them at the same time as Kinetic Ideals and Dome. Anyone else remember them?
Kinetic Ideals I have an ep by them from 81.Dome I will look out for,,thanks
Genius! David Marsden stills plays this great music on Sat and Sun nights at 94.9 The Rock therock dot fm

One listen..The disco to new wave left foot, the rock to new wave right foot, mixed in a bowl by The Spoons.
What a great band. This was one of my favourite tunes from this era and they're Canadian eh!!!!! LOL
I'm sure it was the times that influenced the sound, but I can hear so many old bands in this song.. joy division, icicle woks, echo and the bunnymen, smiths, big country, to name but a few
. . . and the weird part is those bands were mostly unknown to us at the time we wrote this tune.
@@BREEDINGGROUND1 what do you mean by 'we wrote this tune' (?)
This song is very very good. Sooo Toronto ! A mix of Martha and The Muffins and Killing Joke.
Queen St W. It was great.
This whole album rocked!
Shame I can’t find this on Spotify:(
masterpiece
Lee's palaces house band
Brilliant
Chris Wardman was not an original member of the band. He was part of the second phase for the first year and producer for several years.
Jonathan Davies (Kinetic Ideals) replaced the first drummer in 1983.
There was never a video created for this song and regrettably so. However there were videos for the tunes "This Time Tomorrow" "Happy Now I Know" and "Ceremony Of Love" which will be uploaded and available in 2010.
This is my favorite song from BG... awesome song!!
Good stuff
Cfny should still play these great songs
I remember when they were the house band at Lee’s Palace. We’d drive up from Buffalo to catch their act.
@infiniteshaggylions
I live pretty close to London. I remember first hearing this on CFNY in the 80's (fond memories).
Breeding Ground is still one of my favourite Canadian bands of all time. Does anybody know where to get their music for download or on CD?
I'm looking for their music, too. If you ever come across anything on cd please share it here.
best to get to the Toronto Record Show or a show near you.
fucking A! will bands like these ever come back?
Silver Crown.
where on earth can I find digital copy to purchase?
HEY Packager - the original line-up DID NOT include Chris Wardman. He had nothing to do with the birth and early life of the band.
I need a digital copy of this. Please! Can anyone help? Or direct me? Thanks.
Can anyone help with the lyrics to this, please??
Oh im not the only one struggling with the lyrics 😅
Who was drunk upstairs at the Beverly and who'd rather be laughing?
There is a rumour that there is a video for this song. Does anyone have access to it? If you could post it or any of their videos it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for posting this.
No video ever shot for this number
