Yes the orange peal is simply the high and low texturing of the drying paint. When cutting we are only shaving the high point of texture to the low and then stopping there. Going further would risk breaking through all layers
I'm curious how long you waited after you finished spraying clear before you began the cut&polish? Did you wait for full cure (over a week)? Seems like some of the hand sanding is going pretty easy and quick to get orange peal out. As always thanks so much for your wisdom and great detailed vids.
Hello Chris I waited approx 8 months before cutting..Sprayed in March and cut in November. The longer you are able to wait the better the long term results. My strategy was to bake cure and shrink it through the hot summer months. So far so good! It seems to really be tight even after several years now. The trick with sanding is plenty of high-grade sharp sand paper. The second its dull its best to stop and switch it out. Good luck!

Hi Jerry I have had several inquires regarding a dvd on the build but don't really have any plans to do so One viewer had mentioned making a set and sending to me after the project is complete. I believe it is possible to download these videos direct from youtube. If there is something of particular interest perhaps you could save to CD or separate drive.. Quite a lot of space though! Anyway, I’m in the middle of my own ‘69 911T ground up project and the info from your series has been a tremendous resource for me. As a recently retired mechanical engineer from the air filtration industry the only advice I can add to your series would be to consider making your ‘clean booth’ positive pressure rather than negative. It would require turning your fan around and putting a higher efficiency filter on the inlet. High tech clean rooms use this technique - keeps the outdoor dedritus where it belongs, outdoors! However, I do like your idea of using the one fan system to help remove the overspray. Great work … Keep it up … Jerry

Other owners input is so valuable here my hope is building a community of like minded enthusiasts sharing all the mysteries and hard to find of details in one easy to go to location. Hi Justin Thanks Thats a great question..depends on a lot of variables Production shops will usually de-nib and polish the next day but not cutting with a block Show car paint work varies with cut and polish as there are many ways to approach it. Sometime they wait one week and then knock it down with 800 and then re-clear again for the extra build for this process That leaves the paint nice and plump and forgiving to sand on. For me I wait as long as possible..I like at least 3 months but on this car 8 months. The reason is the longer you wait the tighter the paint stretches. Its less forgiving though and not as plump to work with. However if the body work is good underneath the cut and polish will be better and last much longer. A typical problem you will see in custom paint jobs is they go in too soon to do this process..after several months the paint is still drawing down and flaws begin to show, sanding marks, body work, even micro orange peel with form again
I'm enjoying the glittering decorations hanging on the wall ;) I'd be interested to know about your approach to maintaining this kind of paint job in the longer term (do you plan to do partial resprays and if so, how often?). This recently ua-cam.com/video/ekDXNqmaVXE/v-deo.html confirmed my thinking that manufacturers seem to care mostly about making a sale of something shiny, rather than longer term ownership. For example I'm told that the current GT3RS has very limited underbody coating 'to save weight.' They ought to get you on board as an advisor on quality.

That would be a tough color process if it ever needs to go to the body shop...geeze almost no way back..Waa!! This paint should be good to go if I'm able to get through all pieces successfully with cut and polish. If successful should be no need for a respray in the future. cross my fingers. Part of the strategy for this paint work is time and temperature duration for curing. Its been 8 months curing and average booth temperature 110 degrees through the summer time. This ensures longevity built into the cut and polish.. simple wax down the road should be all she needs. Sometimes guys go at this a bit to early and as the paint shrinks over time things will start to pop through resulting in a possible need to respray at a future date
This is highly technical...lots of potential errors for anyone without your experience. Your project has made me face up to the fact that I'm going to have to have an aircooled 911 -someday ;)
