You know how there are a lot of tutorials out there, most of which you learn a little something if you are lucky-- this is not one of those. I have used Photoshop on and off for many years-- since about 1989; and this video has a lot of very useful information, which I had not specifically learned before... equally important, you put it all in usable context and examples. Thank you so much for sharing this, and I wanted to say, AWESOME JOB!
Try 'Lumenzia' luminosity panel/extension. Less layers used with better results + individual luminosity, color, saturation, ...etc. masks. Also exposure blending, what you did here + luminosity mask sliders. That's the leading luminosity panel and leaves no wish open.
So much information! You clarified several things about making luminosity masks. But I am so glad I can pause the video because I cannot keep up with you! Now all I have to do is figure out how to create an action...
I had no idea it could be done inside Photoshop. I've always used Lightroom for that cause I couldn't live without that mask. Is SO useful and powerful. Love the video.
Great info, I appreciate it. The only drawback is how fast you were doing everything. We can always use the back button and see it again, but it defeats the purpose of explaining something to an audience with clarity and class. There is also the issue of unnecessary information merely intended to look funny.
Leave that clarity slider alone... dehaze does a much better job on this sort of image, even if there's no obvious haze. It'll also give you the contrast boost you wanted. I also try saturation before vibrance when there aren't any skin tones or already highly-saturated colours in the image that I want to protect.
Found this clip through fStoppers. Really digging your delivery @tutvid, especially your shotgun approach towards demonstrating the technique in action. Just hit the bell, looking forward to watching future videos.
Not able to download the action anymore. Is that working? very useful video which helped me to add the contrast n color also. Something which most of luminosity mask tutorials don't tell.
Hey Nathaniel, I so appreciate this video! It really helps getting my pictures to pop. Unfortunately, the download link for the Photoshop action seems to be broken, would it be possible to check it out or put the actions on your website? :) Thanks a lot! Edit: Just in case someone else has the same problem: The link is not broken, UA-cam's redirection system is. You need to copy the link and paste it in a separate window or tab. Simply clicking or Ctrl-clicking the link won't work. Hope that helps :)
Awesome video as usual but one thing I really noticed was the attention to detail on your video composition. Dude, you have 2 tabs with both name and handle and perfectly cropped video in a panel area of photoshop. Very slick and again, great video and awesome creative den with the bike on the wall.
Thanks for this! Oh and believe it or not my thanks comes with no strings attached :) You DON'T have to change anything about your channel or the way you speak or the tools you use. I trust your channel and I appreciate you taking the time to do a second take - must have been quite frustrating to realize the mistake made in the first one!
Your handling of luminance masks sounds very good, so decided to use it. I went through the video again, and everything was fine until I started to try to mask for the shadows. Here are some questions: When you were constricting highlights, you used ctrl-shift-alt-click on RGB and continued that for all subsequent new channels. But when you were constricting shadows, you used ctrl-click on RGB in first step, then ctrl-alt-click RGB after that. Is this correct? When you were constricting highlights, your next step was click on new channel, then Ctrl-I. But when you were constricting shadows, you changed the steps for subsequent constrictions to ctrl-alt-click RGB --> new channel --> ctrl-D. This would result in a black screen, so I tried using ctrl-I as on the first procedure for shadows. Is any part of this incorrect? I tried several ways to do the shadows but results were inconsistent. Cannot figure out what is the right way to do the shadows! You were moving fast, but I used pause and took notes. Hope you can help me with this.
it's great video and very helpful in using luminosity mask, but can you check the action download link again, i think it's not working, thank you so much
Great video. I cannot imagine Take 1 being more entertaining than Take 2. You had me laughing with some of you comments. Great tip and advice. I regularly use luminosity mask but never thought to constrain them multiple times as you did. Great effect. Thanks for the action - that will help a lot.
This is an awesome video!!! I dont know about yall but i like the detailed videos. I like to understand what and why we are doing it this way and how it works. Thanks again!
Super powerful. Can definitely see how useful using luminosity masks would be. Your file size at the end ballooned up to 1.6 GB. Would you then flatten the image to bring the file size down to a more reasonable level? Thanks!
Thank you very much for your helpful post Nathaniel! I'll internalize your way of adjustment, and I'll subscribe and watch more of you stuff! Greetings from Austria
I have never understood why Photoshop doesnt have lumenosity masks built in (rather than through channels.) If you like lumenosity masks it is good to get a Photoshop panel for them - I use Lumenzia but there are plenty others....
Same. It would be so useful to have a one-button Luminosity mask generator built in. If I can do it with an Action, surely it can be programmed in, right?
Great video as always, just a question can you make a video about how to use this for product photography and use it for some ad or anything that shows product and how to play with light and shadows. Thank you
I can work on a video for that. Right off the bat, the ability to have this level of control in selecting highlights and shadows is very useful with many different types of product photography :D
OK am I missing something here? I followed the tutorial EXACTLY, but when i hit ok to apply changes in camera raw to the layer the changes are made to all the layers and the luminosity masks dont then change anything in the selection bc all the layers have now changed? Whats going on? I cant find a solution on google for this
thanks for this valuable lesson!! One thing that doesn't work: I have a focus stack. So I alligned all the layers, blended them to a all-in-focus pic and then converted the two layers into a smart object. from there on I made the 8 Alpha channels. Now the two smart object copies wont open in CameraRaw. Is this because there is a focus stack behind?
Basically any time you wanted to add something to the midtones. Think about your histogram. All that stuff in the middle is midtones. So let's say you wanted to increase the contrast of that stuff and not blow out the highlights and shadows, you could do that with a midtone luma mask. Maybe you want to increase the brightness of the midtones to add punchiness to the image. Midtone luma mask. Maybe you want to increase or decrease the saturation of the image, but you don't want your shadows to get milky or contaminated with color. Midtone luma mask. I'll start working on another video for the midtone luma masks. They're super helpful in their own rite!
Awesome Video, learnt a heap from it. A question that is some what related... you opened the file initially and Adobe Camera Raw opened. I open my files through Lightroom using "open in photoshop as a smart object" is this the exact same thing? i noticed the screens look different. Also as an FYI there is an issue with your discord link. Keep the great work up.
Awesome videos you make! Question: That video of yourself in the top right corner. It looks like a regular photoshop tab. Is it done in post or is there a plugin or something for that? Imagine being able to stream youtube tuts directly in a window inside photoshop. That would free up some screen when following along your videos.
TIL the reason why some of my more complex work files require to be saved as PSB. I use channels to select and mask everything that’s not a clear edge (hair, depth of field,...). I never figured masks / saved channels could be the culprit. Here I was turning everything to raster later on during my edits. 🤦🏼♂️
#Nathaniel - I've watched a lot of UA-cam videos about Luminosity Masks but yours is by far the best out there. I now feel I actually understand what's happening, which makes it much easier to use them 'properly'. And a free Action! I am in your debt kind sir :)
Yes in so far as it is literally a "High Dynamic Range" image. Our eyes can see much more dynamic range than the camera sensors. This way you can choose how much dynamic range your image has AND not get the nasty halos, fake Clarity-looking effects, and artifacting that we saw when bad HDR was trendy.
I'm always impressed how much information he can pack into a video. Either pause the video every minute to catch up, like I do, or Settings > Playback Speed > 0.75
When you said "it will feel like you know more about photoshop then your friends when you start playing around in there” I thought about that none of my friends know how to use photoshop at all😂 I am the only one who edits photos in Lightroom and photoshop🤷♂️
first time i tried this it worked perfectly but now for some reason when ever i have the 3 smart object images when i adjust the H image it applys it to all of them . ( the L and original what am i doing wrong ???????
You need to right-click the smart object and choose "New Smart Object via Copy" and not just do a Ctrl + J copy. Ctrl + J duplicates an instance of the Smart Object so when one changes, they all change. Creating a new Smart Object "via copy" creates a new Smart Object altogether. Hope that helps!
My OCD is coming through when seeing this perspective xD Just a bit to the left and the bridge would be perfect.... 172 MB is quite a high amount of RAW data...how many megapixels does this photo have?
Could you next time please put the result photo in the beginning, so from the beginning we will know why are we watching this. it will give more motivation to see before/after

I don't know why YT recommend me this video but I watched the whole thing. This is what I call an advanced PS tutorial.
Arguably one of your best tutorials! Loved it!!!!!!!!!
Excellent vid. I use a panel called lumenzia by Greg Benz, but for people that don't know about luminosity masks this is great.
Congratulations. You're a Photoshop whizz. I have no idea what you just did.

And special thanks for the action❤

Wow this is a very powerful tool, i won't lie i didn't know this tool but im glad i do now 😄😉
I'm glads you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Nicely done. Just a hint, which I suspect you may know, clicking the first icon in the icon tray of the channels window will do the selection for you.
I had no idea it could be done inside Photoshop. I've always used Lightroom for that cause I couldn't live without that mask.

Thanks!

That's it, I'm going to ask UA-cam for a 'Love' button. 'Thumb-up' in such cases feels like luminosity masking my gratitute away. Thank you!
