  • I am building a pottery kiln fueled by fire wood. The design is a slight modification of a "Train Kiln."
Spanning the kiln "throat" with an arch made of high duty dense firebrick also spanning the ware chamber doorway with an arch of the same size.

Sort of reminds me of my grandfathers step kiln in Fairplay CO.

Beautiful work. Would you mind sharing your refractory mortar recipe?

Just a word of advice, although by the looks of it i might be too late and you know what youre doing… but when you make such thick and tall sections out of castable (and/or concrete as well) you might want to add stainless steel rods. It helps help it keep its shape and integrity for much longer. Its why rebar is used in concrete jobs.
Other than that it looks amazing, wish i has as much space as you do!

Since this kiln will get fired up to about 1200-1300 degrees celsius wouldn't it be a bad thing to have an element contract and expand with the heat?
