About This Video:
I made bricks using an old brickmold made in a previous video. The bricks were made from red clay from an old tree throw that became enlarged by when wild pigs used it as a wallow. This red clay was carried to a pit near the work site and tread on till it was the right consistency. The bricks were then allowed to dry. While this happened, I obtained good quality clay from the creek and made a new brick mold, a rectangular clay pot for washing mud from the mold and two other clay pots. I then made a kiln out of bricks and fired the mold, pots and some bricks. I then used the new mold and pots to make more bricks. The kiln is easy to build and has a 50 brick firing capacity. The bricks should be useful for building permanent structures in future.

Primitive technology is a hobby where you build things in the wild completely from scratch using no modern tools or materials. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc. The challenge is seeing how far you can go without utilizing modern technology. I do not live in the wild, but enjoy building shelter, tools, and more, only utilizing natural materials. I honestly enjoy it more as a wordless demonstration. Most of what he does is clear enough to understand from just visuals, so I like to just sit back, enjoy the nature sounds and watch him do his thing.

I just can't overstate how much I love this. Too many other channels either talk too much or skip important bits or just don't give any how-to information at all. This channel is still the King of primitive building.
They skip those bits because they bring in the backhoes and concrete between the shots of their "primitive" builds. Nothing primitive except their channel names.
I've seen one other channel where a guy builds mostly survival shelters without talking. There is no how-to info and he uses a few modern hand tools (namely a spade) but you get to see him build pretty much everything. His channel name is Cyprian Outdoor Adventures. Every other channel I find has good info but too much talking.
There's a bazillion "primitive" imitators out there nowadays, but Primitive Technology was the first and is still the absolute best.
Almost all of them are fakes except Chad Zuber and Primitive Skills. When the og Primitive Technology left for 2 years those guys were my substitute

Normally a channel would be irrelevant after being inactive for so long, but this man is too legendary.
This is literally the ONLY channel that I have notifications turned on for. He could leave for 10 years and I would fall out of my bed because he uploads a video.

Closest channel I know that did something like this was Bill Wurtz, who went 21 months before casually showing back up. To compare, this guy went 26 months before casually showing back up again. Vsauce also went 23 months without a normal video, but he was still posting his Mindfield show as well as on other channels.

Unlike most other channels out there that are clearly fake and leave their destruction behind as a potentially very big hazard that would take a long time to heal, this guy on the other hand gets straight to the point and doesn’t try to accomplish wildly unrealistic feats that are simply untrue, like making swimming pools. (Even the ancient Greeks knew that you had to filter water constantly, lest it turning into something foul really quick, especially in the heat) Just simple materials used in nature like wood, sticks, sand, clay, mud, rocks, fire, and anything in between. He doesn’t always keep uploading every other week either, meaning that this clearly takes a lot of time.
He might not live in the wild, but at least he’s honest and that his methods are real. It shows some real ways of how humans could’ve survived thousands of years ago. And this guy is pretty much doing it by himself! (Although I wouldn’t be surprised if he had some occasional help sometimes) *Mad respect.*

I just love how he is still using the pots and molds he made years ago. Really shows you how long lasting these primitive tools are.

Actually clay tablets are the information storage medium with the longest track record of survivability, going back many thousands of years, we are going to have to wait a really long time until flash drives and other electronic medium can prove themselves to their extent.
@@freedom_aint_free No electronic medium will "prove themselves" to the same extent, and we are already well aware of the limitations of the mediums we store information on. A DVD is expected to last 30, 50, maybe 100 years.

This is the only channel that sometimes repeat the content, but is still interesting to watch. He made bricks before, but since he needs new ones, he improved the technique and just made them again. Let's see what he will do next time

In a prosperous primitive town, it could easily have multiple guys at work making bricks, pots, etc. Ancient Egypt probably had rows of shops much like this.
And then makes some incredible things with those bricks.
Here we have the first weeks of "A Tale in The Desert" only in the Jungle/Forest. Not sure if his location would meet the "Official" definition of a Jungle or not. 500 years from now some archeologist is going to publish a paper "Found! The work shops of the Mythical John Plant".

@@joshuamcdonald5850 Glass works kiln and glassblowing pipe or such would also be badass. Just imagine being able to use solar powered evaporation to get clean water for an example. But that would take 1800 ish C to melt sand into quartz(using potash as flux might be able to getaway with 800 to 900 C). With charcoal that might be achievable tho.
I hope he ends with an army and a castle and takes over the world.

HAving seen the entire library of Primative Technology videos over the years, I am still in awe of him making fire with his bare hands, not even a bow drill. Every time. No words for how difficult that is to learn.
the idea is easy to learn, doing it is another matter, and doing it well is very difficult
I remember him exerting quite a lot of effort for it inn the beginning. Now he seems te be able to do it in like 20 seconds tips. Really impressive. :p

Don't forget he's going home to a sanitary and warm environment with plentiful food and medical care compared to that. Living like that full time is miserable and hard to keep up with when you get older.

They're two entirely different ways to view it. With captions on, it's a lot more educational. Without them, it's a lot more relaxing.
I personally prefer to watch them just before bed without subtitles on. It's extremely calming. Plus, he makes it visually clear enough what he's doing where you can still follow along

Spent my childhood doing what this man's doing. Built my own small houses to live in, on parents' property. Only difference is that I would run electricity to them in the end. My houses had all the neighbours visiting, just to stay over and relax. I ran power cables through trenches I dug. I had lighting, electric ventilation and things like an electric kettle. I've also built 2 dozen fireplaces by the time I was 15. I got very good at it. I'd embed heat pipes throughout walls and have them work off the fireplace that cooked food. The place where we lived had very frequent blackouts, so I built fireplaces for myself and others out of necessity. I had access to industrial bricks sometimes, but I had to mix my own mortar. Dig through dirt to get clay and sand. Fun memories.
These videos bring me back to q happier time of my life when you first started posting. The people I shared your videos with cant enjoy them as they used to. Thank you for your videos. They provide me with a huge sense of nostalgic comfort.

@@m_artroom in that case, check out the channel How To Make Everything. Andy is doing just that, progressing through the technology of the ages, starting with the stone age.
The issue is if he makes anymore progress, he'll fully enter the bronze/iron age and it stops being primitive. Heck, he already teased the iron age when he made those prillings. He's just too powerful to continue progress with any one setup without styling on all of humanity.

Love how he decided that the square pot with a "minor crack", which was intended for infrequent, stationary use, was "good enough" - while the pots he uses for frequent, carrying usage are only the ones who pass the "no cracks" test. He knows WHEN to spare work and when NOT.

Most modern bricks I have seen had vertical holes in them. Bricks with holes should dry faster, save on clay, be lighter and burn faster too. I'm pretty sure they should be as structurally sound as solid bricks. Interesting work and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

He’s experimented with that in the past; not sure why he decided to make solid bricks rather than bricks with holes in them - maybe they tended to deform too much in the process?
@@ragnkja takes time, he's not buying the clay so material cost doesn't matter, and they provide potential nucleation sites for cracks, also could be potential hiding spots for some nasty critters, just speculation though
Modern bricks use much more homogenius clay of known quality. This clay would be more likely to crack.
Abig reason for the holes is to make them lighter for transport and construction which is not as important here.
The extra time, complexity in forming and failure rate when drying/fireing is probably just not worth it in this context.

These videos are just amazing; learned so much from watching and then trying myself. Lots of imitators out there, but none better than the original.
I've always wondered about one thing with the brick kilns. Do the bricks you use for the structure og the kiln itself get fired all the way through over the time that you use them? If not, would it help to turn them inside out (so the side that doesn't get fired faces the inside of the kiln)? After you're done using the kiln, what do you do with the structural bricks?
Bricks would spread the heat better as it also retains heat well
The bricks won't fire completely (it needs to heat to the point of glowing for it to become water-resistant, and continue to heat up even more to completely become a ceramic brick).
However, the bricks in a kiln don't need to do much more than simply hold the kiln together and insulate the inside from the outside air. Even cracked bricks, while bad for insulating, can be patched together with clay since all it needs to do is hold the fire in. His first brick kiln was just made from mud that dried when it was first fired and patched with more mud as it cracked.
Going from old videos, he usually keeps a kiln until it's time to move or he makes a better one. Bricks are heavy and annoying to transport by hand so I wouldn't be surprised if he smashed old kilns.

I wonder if primitive tech has had this idea already: I would happily re-watch all the old videos if they were updated with an explanation like this video! I think that would be fairly fast and easy compared to making all new videos. A win-win!
