I watched another landing video before seeing this one just now and loved the song they played, "Creed - Weathered"... So, I watched this video but, muted it so I could hear the song lol. Anywho... I got emotional thinking of how many flights I've been on and have always been grateful that the pilots get us to and fro safely but, I felt even more gratitude looking at the back of the pilots and watching them guide this plane into this amazing city. I hope that you are enjoying retirement and I'm sending you a personal "Thank you". I'm sure you miss the job in many ways but, hopefully you're doing other things you love now too. Blessings ♥
Flew into San Diego from Chicago back in May. Got off the place and was curbside in minutes and then right to the marina and downtown area for something to eat. O'Hare is giant and dwarfs SD. They do a good job considering its size and number of passengers and flights but San Diego International was refreshing. Only saw the corner of that parking garage as we touched down and thought it was a bad idea.

I video taped the landings and take offs and some videos inbetween. Some videos will be up twice since I will connect videos too. But I want to say that now that I video taped the landing into San Diego its even more fascinating to see this landing from the pilots view.
Nice landing you two. Your expertise on the flight deck will be missed. I looked for footage after seeing an episode of Air Disasters and how tricky this approach and landing was. Sure would not want a couple of kids up front.

My pop and grandpop were aviation buffs but they never flew. Feet on the ground, terra firma, was their motto. I washed out of the army warrant officer chopper pilot program in early '65 after seven months in s. Alabama. My brother was a forest service smokejumper for nine seasons, ending in 1975. He earned a certificate for never being injured. My folks were always worried, esp. during takeoffs and landings. That was his most tense time, not fighting the flames.
My father was a captain. The mandatory retirement rule was controversial when instigated, more so now. Pilots are in better condition. Airports are safer and experience plays such an important role. I know a lot probably want to retire, but it shouldn't be mandatory. A yearly medical should take care of it with mandatory moved to at least 67.
The mandatory retirement age is set for a purpose. SAFETY!!! The airline industry doesn't need incompetent idiots trying to give a uneducated opinion about increasing it. The only place a 67 year old should be is on the ground or a passenger in a passenger seat.
Did notice one thing though that is very concerning. The pilot on the left never scans for traffic left or right. PSA 182 went down several years ago after being hit by a Cessna. Also there is a Coast Guard air station just to the left of the airport on the approach as well as traffic form the Coronado Navel air station just southwest of the airport. Lots of potential for an accident and all pilots should be scanning for any aircraft that may not be accounted for. There were two Cessna related to the PSA 182 disaster but the pilots were not aware of the second one by ATC and they did not see the second one.
EVERY local pilot knows about PSA 182. Nobody else (besides airlines and cargo) flies anywhere near that approach anymore. Also, in 1978 on that day, the sky was very smoggy. Local air traffic was harder to spot due to pollution. Now it's pretty apparent when there is local air traffic.
You are flying down the hills so the parking garage isn't as much of an issue as it would seem, because the airport sits in a bowl, of sorts. When you are driving on I-5, which is overflown just before the runway, the planes do look low, but when seeing them from a few hundred feet down the road, it's apparent if a plane were in danger of hitting the garage, that would likely be the least of their concerns.
Michael Bailey not true. The parking garage is of big concern to all large aircraft. So much so that certain heavy' aren't even allowed to land at night and under limited visibility. The threshold was displaced some 1000 ft down the runway shortening up an already too short runway. Not a single pilot who flies in here regularly would complain if it was torn down. On approach you cannot see the departure end clearly, the result being that almost all approaches end up a little high which just makes the runway that much shorter. Because of the height of the structure and its proximity to landing aircraft people are not allowed to loiter on the top floor. This parking garage is evidence of what is wrong with local politics, and politicians getting kickbacks.

I was mearly commenting on what risk the parking garage poses to aircraft with respect to what seems to be observed from the ground. I can't recount the times I've heard the parking garage is "the" major concern when countless commercial pilot videos focus far more on the terrain and I can visually see their landing clearance over the structure. The garage issue is usually referred to in an "oh, yeah that thing is there, too" manner. Most concern themselves with the stepdown issues associated with terrain. If the terrain wasn't an issue along with the short runway, which is further complicated by the displaced threshold, heavy's would have no problem taking off and landing at SAN. It's just easier to blame a building than terrain.

there are literally thousands of pilots at an airline. It's very easy for a pilot to retire after 20 years of service and never fly with the same pilot twice.

Interesting how the terrain slopes down before the runway. Looks like you have to dance across the rooftops on that approach.

I was back in San Diego again August 18th to August 23rd 2015 and recorded the take off's and landings.
