Bowtie: I’m a big fan of how you add some character and crack protection with the bowtie while also making it look like it was meant to be there. Great job!
Seeing how much people pay for your tables makes me happy that there are still people out there that will pay for a piece of real furniture! Awesome video!
@@jokinabadsbs I agree partially. Most of the tools that it takes to do this are very expensive, and also you need a place to put those tools. There is a lot of factors when calculating price. Also this type of work is dangerous. I have thousands of dollars worth of tools, but I don't have the tools that it takes to work with huge slabs. I guess my point is.. it takes a lot of money to make money lol
@@dereknapier836 I build furniture (including river tables) and you have a bit of a point, but keep in mind the amount of labor that Cam puts into his pieces that most other shops don't. He spends hours filling every crack and void and then even more hours meticulously sanding. He mortises in the legs and goes the extra mile to create a really spectacular piece. It's the difference between an actual artist and someone looking to make a buck. Also, you have to have a sort of consistent pricing model regardless of the slab's price. If the final result isn't too dissimilar to another piece (regardless of the slab prices) it doesn't make sense to charge 1/4 of the price since that'll just confuse customers perusing. Cam seems pretty transparent about his pricing model but doesn't have to be. If you put the table built out of a $250 slab next to the table built out of a $1500 slab you wouldn't notice the difference IMO.
Hey, the people that don’t want to hear you talk can turn the sound off…. Pretty childish that they unsubscribe because of something like your voice. You do awesome work man.
Bow tie. My dad does professional Hawaiian bowl woodturning and the bow ties actually add value to the piece. It acknowledges there is a flaw in the timber and it has been addressed. For the uninitiated, the bow tie does take getting used to. I now find them to be aesthetically pleasing and really adds character and patina to the piece. This desk was exquisite. The figuring was similar to what you would find on higher end Koa pieces and matched by your skilled craftsmanship. Well done!
Bowtie: This man is the first youtuber i've come across who asks you to subscribe if you think his content is worth it and not at the beginning but after you've watched enough to be able to make an informed decision. People go ahead and subscribe to then tell him to shut up on his OWN CHANNEL? Unsubscribe and leave him in peace. Keep talking sir, i love it. My country uses the metric system, it is all i know yet i would not call America's imperial system stupid. People are really doing the most out here
Bowtie... Please, don't ever listen to any of the negative comments about the format of your channel. Silent wood working channels are a dime a dozen, but there are only a few that have commentary, and even fewer that are as high quality as your channel. I'm subscribed to quite a few woodworking, fabricating, hobbyist, craftsmanship, etc., type channels, however, your channel is literally the only one that I have notifications turned on for. I look forward to every new Blacktail Studio video because I like WATCHING the tables and LISTEN to the process. The best part is that you can almost guarantee that the people who said they would be unsubscribing, will continue to watch every single video you post. People like that just love making empty threats. Just keep the great, high quality content coming!
Bowtie! My father is a woodworker and has recently started turning his own bowls from cast offs, scraps, and such that he finds out and about on his walks. This table is gorgeous and the added ceramic is a must for something so pretty. I am going to pass that onto him for his future projects. Everyone has an opinion these days from the bow ties to the use of the metric system...they can all take a piss! Keep carving your own path and creating these masterpieces for your friends, family, and clients. Wonderful job!
Bowties are something I fell in love with the 1st time I saw them used on an Ishitani table. The fact that they are structural and aesthetic just makes them that much more appealing to me. I actually like it when a completely different wood is used, something about the contrast of the woods adds to the look.
I just found this channel a couple days ago. I don't EVER plan on doing any woodworking but it's fascinating to see a raw piece of material turn into something interesting. Also, I like to listen to the commentary because I can see what is happening from a noob's perspective.
At the ripe old age of 38 and a mother of 2 lively boys, I have just started as a 1st year apprentice of fine furniture. Your channel and this video in particular speak to my love of character timber and the need to be meticulous in how I treat it and sculpt it. Love this desk. Looking forward to what the other half becomes.
I'd love to do something similar, but wouldn't know where to start. I did a 3 year cabinet making and upholstery course when i left school, but ended up thinking it was a waste of time, but i'd love to go back to it now. i'm also around the same age, but thought it was way to late to start again.
Bow ties, definitely. I really enjoy how you are humbly honest about your abilities, limitations, and mistakes you find yourself making. You give us an honest appraisal of a project, or a product, and how the whole thing went. No hype, no “Look how wonderful I am“; just a good straightforward conversation about the process. Thanks for that. And yes, I am happy to hear your voice as I watch your awesome abilities.
I am genuinely speechless. It's a beautiful desk, and the leg set fits just perfect. I agree with many others, the voice commentary makes this video even more enjoyable. Thanks!
My favorite thing about your vid’s is the talking , banter, and jokes, I don’t woodwork but I do thoroughly enjoy each video because of the comments, you’re a great storyteller
Cam hi. I absolutely love love love 💗 your videos! Very instructional. I’m not a woodworker but love how you take raw wood 🪵 and make a table or desk into a piece of art ! Love your style. I love it all- the live edges, the black epoxy, the futuristic legs, etc. I find your voice very calming and soothing. And you are very funny!!! I enjoy your dry sense of humor. It’s too bad if others can’t enjoy humor and take offense. It’s their problem, not yours. You are an artist my friend! Keep doing what you’re doing! Ignore the trolls 🧌!!! Blessings to you & your family! 💗🙏🏽💗
As someone who's been woodworking the majority of their life in Standard, and then learned Metric when I was doing it professionally, Metric is awesome for precision woodworking. Precision anything in fact. But like you said, there is absolutely no way that change would come easy here in the States. Also, for day to day life, I think saying "that's about 2 feet" is way easy than 609.6 millimeters hahaha. Nice work man, love this channel
Cam, I'm all about the preservation of the art. So if the bow ties help support the table's integrity, then I'm all for them. Thanks again for the vid.
Bow-Tie is fine when needed. Your work is terrific. I've been finishing professionally for more thirty years and have been reaching my sheen levels the old fashioned way (seriously centuries old processes) and I think that its time for a new way...Rubio Mono-Coat and Black Forest Ceramic here we come.
Bowtie. If I may make a suggestion: why don't you create a second channel "Blacktail Studio ASMR" and upload a version of your videos with just the wood working sounds. So you export the video, right before you make the voice-over version. So people can have which one they like.
It's doable, though if if its doable enough is up to him, but it isn't as easy as exporting it before doing the voice over. He still has to do (and redo) all the audio mixing, note how there isn't any audio in the voice over other than the voiceover. He also probably has to completely re-edit the video as there will be bits that the ambient audio isn't good enough (eg bad recording, uninteresting, uncomfortable etc) and to have the flow work without a voiceover. So while it not be a doubling of work to create an ASMR version it is going to be a significant increase in work, and he will have to judge if it's worth it.
Hi!! We love watching your channel. I started showing your videos to my 5 year old son and he requested to watch one every night before bed, and your beautiful voice over always puts him to sleep before we can finish the video. Thanks!! Keep up the great work.
The color and grain in that walnut is incredible, I can see why it fetches such a hefty price. I've been playing around with the idea of making bowties out of non-wood materials, mostly stone (granite, rose quartz, blue quartz) to give some high contrast and added interest. Im curious what your thoughts are on this idea. Awesome vid and table! Cheers!
Ryan that's a great idea! I work with various building materials and types of stone, and I have been thinking of ways to incorporate some of the more interesting stone into these pieces. edit: would have to install the stone in a location that won't need additional cuts or sanding. I'm not aware of any dual purpose material removal methods that work for stone + wood, unlike metal + wood.
I saw a guy on UA-cam do a bronze bow tie that he cast and machined, it looked really hard to do but it popped. I liked the aged bronze or oiled color. The hardest part seemed to be getting it flattened perfectly with the table.
Notie generally, as others have said it can detract from the grain. However, if they were more of a feature piece rather than trying to blend in they could make an interesting addition.
BOWTIE! Recent subscriber here. I run a commercial cabinet shop, all perfunctory boxes, no creativity. This is my favorite project to see so far. That desk was stunning!
I love the look of bow ties. It speaks of craftsmanship, awareness of how wood ages, and I’ve seen some pieces with different color ties in them! They’re wonderful when needed.
Notie! I think there's enough character in the table from the figuring, live edges and epoxy. The bowties are a distraction. Really beautiful result. Must've been a great feeling to finish working on such a nice piece of wood.
I absolutely love your videos. I dont know why. Also you have a great voice for voice over. Thanks for entertaining me for longer than i feel comfortable admitting.
I don't like the look of bow-ties, but in this projects they are actually kinda cool, because it looks like dams holding back reservoir water in a river. I also completely understand the necessity of them being inserted to hold the wood together, so it's not really a question of taste...unless you could make them just on the undersite so you don't "ruin" the surface of the tabletop. Anyways...I enjoy your videos a lot, keep it up mate! =)
You know it's a pleasure to see beautiful wood, I've worked with wood for years, building floors stud work, stairs, house building and it's not artistic, so to see special wood being made into one of a kind furniture is a real treat. Thank you for doing something I never even thought about, never dreamed that someone would spend so much money on any crafted furniture.
Love your work! My father was a woodworker, so I am drawn to watching the craft. I wish he was still around to watch you work! Also, your voice is not annoying and I like the bow ties!

I have recommended your channel and Tom Johnson antique restoration in Gorham, Maine to all my friends. You are 2 of the most incredible artists and I am grateful for a medium like UA-cam for making your channels available. I never watch regular TV anymore.
Bowties 100%. Especially with the figure. Also those table legs were an outstanding choice. Would never have thought that alien shape would have worked, but you did. Bravo! Thanks again for an instructive and aesthetically pleasing vid.
Brilliant Video. I just wanted to mention that the bows are designed to appear like little bridges crossing over a wooden river along with strengthening the parts. They look so great when you just enjoy the finished product and look at the beautiful natural design. Thumbs up.
NoTie: The bow ties on the top seemed to detract from the beauty of the filled crack. I think you should have added the bowties on the bottom for structure but left the top just the epoxied crack.
yes! or if you really must use them on top, recess them and do it before the epoxy fill, then carve out the "proud" potion to look natural so when you fill with epoxy you have no idea there is structure beneath it. Also, if you go that route you can use thinner metal joints with epoxy on top.
Bowtie / dutchman. These have been used forever to stabilize wood. They are just part of life. Keep the commentary. 👍👍Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. 🙂🙂
First of all: what a fantastic looking table! Wow! Second: don't worry so much about all the trolls. You'll drive yourself crazy accommodating the commenters in your videos. This is your channel and your shop, make the pieces and the youtube content you want. Who cares what the viewers think? You're using youtube to document your passion. Thank you for sharing these vids with the world, this table is another masterpiece! Wouldn't it work to hold those cracks with bow ties from under the table? Not showing them on the top would be possibly the best option to go right?
That’s an awesome desk as far as the bow ties go they look really good I think. Especially being a wood worker myself you have to ensure the quality of what you made. That crack definitely needed more structure added to it if that tables going to last. A true craftsman needs to make these kinds of choices.
its a year later so i'm not sure you will get this but i just have to say the response to the message at the end of your video was perfect! in the first video of yours that i watched you were talking about people saying you talk to much throughout your videos. so for their benefit, you stopped talking for 5 seconds or less so they could hear whatever tool you were using at the time. that had me hooked. i don't actually do woodworking. i know a bit as members of my family build things, i just find your videos entertaining. never stop being you!

I absolutely love you videos and your work. you’re my favorite wood worker, and I don’t care if you never have a pause in your videos. talk the whole time and continue making the decisions you make because you are one of the best. love, Riley.
bowtie! I actually initially wasn't too enthused about the look of the bowties just kinda cutting into the basic grain, but the beauty of the wood is definitely still kept and it feels really do nice
btw, that comment regarding thumbs down's is just an amazing example of how down to earth you are w/ this whole channel and it's immensely amazing, and amazing work on the table as always!
@@jokinabadsbs let's see some photos of your projects of that size seeing how you think it is so easy?
@@dereknapier836 What point are you trying to make? Are you saying that it's overpriced?
@@dereknapier836 so show us your more impressive projects.
Agreed. Whiners are weiners. They bring nothing to the table. Pay them no mind.
I'm guessing they want to hear the sound of the woodworking
Talk ALL YOU WANT! This is your video. You are so talented. Absolutely beautiful.
Absolutely gorgeous wood. Made me realize I’d be terrible at this as a job, because I’d constantly want to keep the finished product for myself.
Yeah, until the guy who ordered it handed you $9000...
Well done!
Interesting....
It's sad that half of the information on videos are disclosures to preemptively stop negative comments.
I’m glad you decided not to listen to people who don’t want your commentary. You are very helpful and very talented! Thank you!
Bowties are something I fell in love with the 1st time I saw them used on an Ishitani table. The fact that they are structural and aesthetic just makes them that much more appealing to me. I actually like it when a completely different wood is used, something about the contrast of the woods adds to the look.
I do not know what all of those people are on about, your voice is very pleasing on the ears
I love this guy because he answers almost all of the questions you ask him. I have never been disappointed.
I try!
You do what you do and to hell with others. Always a treat to watch and listen.
And yes, I am happy to hear your voice as I watch your awesome abilities.
no tie, man what an aboslutely beautiful table!
We would probably say “that’s about half a meter “
Bowtie shows the craftmanship. When I first saw you doing them I was unsure but it adds another layer of interest to the finished desktop.
I'm a carpenter and I know how much work a project like this is. And I can only say, very nice job man. Looks awesome. !!! Subbed :)
Bowtie. If I may make a suggestion: why don't you create a second channel "Blacktail Studio ASMR" and upload a version of your videos with just the wood working sounds. So you export the video, right before you make the voice-over version. So people can have which one they like.
You'll also get subscribers that you wouldn't otherwise, and you'll gain more side income from UA-cam.
I might. We’ll see if I have the bandwidth
Actually a good idea.
@@BlacktailStudio it's pretty easy to strip out the sound and just have it blank
Cheers!
ua-cam.com/video/YAgD1aJDngQ/v-deo.html
I love your idea of using non-wood materials!
Ooo that's an interesting idea, I'd like to see how that works out. Using stone bowties would definitely be a lot harder but it would look fantastic
I saw a guy on UA-cam do a bronze bow tie that he cast and machined, it looked really hard to do but it popped. I liked the aged bronze or oiled color. The hardest part seemed to be getting it flattened perfectly with the table.
I’m a no tie guy, but damn, the Rubio + ceramic coat looks fascinating, perfect for this gorgeous slab. Another winner Cam
Notie generally, as others have said it can detract from the grain. However, if they were more of a feature piece rather than trying to blend in they could make an interesting addition.
Yeah I agree, I thought this too
Bow tie definitely. I can’t imagine why everyone else doesn’t highlight their troll of the week. It’s really insightful and hilarious.
Oh man! This guy is so nice, I can’t ever imagine hating on his videos.
You sir have my like, subscription, and comment 👍
Also, bow tie!
Dam! I came here to say exactly that. Great minds think alike - it totally looks like a satellite photo of a lake.
@@boskee Dam! I saw what you did there! =)
Moos wah he do
Moo hope not on about the sayin

You know it's a pleasure to see beautiful wood, I've worked with wood for years, building floors stud work, stairs, house building and it's not artistic, so to see special wood being made into one of a kind furniture is a real treat. Thank you for doing something I never even thought about, never dreamed that someone would spend so much money on any crafted furniture.
Love your work! My father was a woodworker, so I am drawn to watching the craft. I wish he was still around to watch you work! Also, your voice is not annoying and I like the bow ties!
I commend you on your woodworking skills, and integrity as a person. So many people default first to being defensive and rude in return to rude. All in well done and nice work!
How can they don’t like your video, those tables are beautiful…
Great table. Would look amazing in my office/games room that I don’t have. Haters will always hate. I am always amazed how little respect people have for others. The amount of effort that goes into the tables and the videos it’s first class. Keep up the great work
I'm a steel worker, not a carpenter, just started growing some Black Walnut and suddenly UA-cam reccomends your channel, that's some good work brother, keep it up
That is the most gorgeous wood/turned into table, I've ever seen. I have watched a lot of your videos and love them all. Keep up what you're doing, you're great!
Bowties for sure. I find the contrast between the natural wood grain and the super precise machining of the bowties to be extremely interesting.
Thanks for the videos.
Bowties, espacially yours are perfect, and are just a smart way to make a furniture last longer. Love ya, Cam for what you do! Have a good day :)
I’m not a woodworker, so your commentary is important for people like me who loves watching your videos, but has no idea what you’re doing. Talking us through your processes helps me to understand what I’m looking at. Your voice is just fine. Haters should just keep quiet. Keep up the good work!
Your videos are AMAZING, so informative and professional, I'm brand new at the whole epoxy world and I've learned a tremendous amount from you. Thank you for everything you do and all the time and effort you put into your videos to teach us amateurs the how to.
For those who don't like all the talking: TURN OFF THE SOUND! Sometimes I can deal with it, sometimes I can't, so one click does the trick🔈...
Bow ties are always a great addition! personally i might have gone with a more contrasting wood for the bow ties but hey, I'm not the client. Keep up the awesome work!
I am an English woman who has been ill for a while and have watched your artistry and hard work making these beautiful objects. Wish I had a work room like yours to try it my self. Thank you fir sharing your wonderful talent and talking us through it. Maureen from London
As a woodworker, definatly love the bowties. I feel like its a roll of the dice deciding whether someone else would like it or not
Bow Tie, all day every day for cracks or even as an inlay. Personally I like the contrast in colors between purple heart and a lighter wood, like curly maple.
I have basically no woodworking experience, but this is so cool. I love how dedicated you are to improving the channel with the comments, but even little things like the timestamps and links
It makes more sense due to the weght putting on it too
You should’ve used epoxy for the bow ties. That looked pretty off
Bowtie / dutchman. These have been used forever to stabilize wood. They are just part of life. Keep the commentary. 👍👍Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. 🙂🙂
I've been with your channel for a while now and honestly seeing how consistent your content has been and always improving is so impressive.
Don't let the trolls influence your passion or or decision making in your process. Your work in the shop speaks for itself.
It's like a real life Field of Dreams kind of thing here. Focus on the build.
Cheers.
I’m a finish carpenter and I’d like to get into making pieces like this on the side so it’s cool to watch videos like this and get a general idea of the whole process and what goes into these beautiful pieces. Super cool video and what an amazing table top!
I'm not a wood worker and I know these videos are generally for woodworkers, but I have watched soooo many videos a lot of them super old, but definitely enjoying the content
BowTie or No BowTie you are the master crafts man that's your call.
The desk is f ing awesome.
No tie. I think it distracts from the visual flow. However, if the customer is cool with them, then that’s all that matters. As far as not talking versus talking, throwing both sides a curveball by singing your script the next video. You choose the music.
Bowtie: When done well, they add to the overall story of the piece. You do them well. Keep them in there!
I liked your point on switching to metric. I have used a different example. The US is in fact switching to metric but one item at a time. So far they know and understand 9mm. I enjoy your work and have forwarded it to my brother who does woodworking. He has enjoyed it too. Thank you.
stunning!! i love the bow ties, i definitely think they added to the overall look. could you do one with a marbled brown epoxy pour? i’m curious about how the color dyes would interact!
I had always wonder how a table like this can cost so much, after watching this video, I can see that it more than justify the cost.
I just recently happened upon your videos. I am loving this haha, I'll probably never have a space large enough for a table like this, but my god your craftsmanship and commentary is great. ♥
ua-cam.com/video/YAgD1aJDngQ/v-deo.html
This dude is my idol . Keep commentating bro, there’s not very many people that get this inclusive and detailed. I’ve learned a lot from this channel over the last few years.
Thanks bud!
Cam, what percentage of water in a slab is best to start making a table/desk with? “Walnut slab”
11 😊
Bow tie/no tie...love the ingenuity of the ties & totally get them as under-side reinforcements, but I wouldn't want to see them on the surface of a $10k desk...love (LOVE) your work. Have you done much w/ Myrtle wood before? I lived on the Oregon coast near Coos Bay for 6 years as a kid & was always enamored by the woodworking guys did with that species. Cheers.
Thank you for sharing these vids with the world, this table is another masterpiece! Wouldn't it work to hold those cracks with bow ties from under the table? Not showing them on the top would be possibly the best option to go right?
Bowtie! Pulled back into Blacktail videos again. Rewatching a year later. Always informative, entertaining and you have a great eye for detail.
The comment "So you'd kill a tree for a table?" my immediate thought was "Of course not! I would never kill a tree. That's Jacks job."
That’s an awesome desk as far as the bow ties go they look really good I think. Especially being a wood worker myself you have to ensure the quality of what you made. That crack definitely needed more structure added to it if that tables going to last. A true craftsman needs to make these kinds of choices.
I’d rather have No Tie but if it keeps the structure safe then keep using them. Great video. Thank you for all your hard work.
its a year later so i'm not sure you will get this but i just have to say the response to the message at the end of your video was perfect!
in the first video of yours that i watched you were talking about people saying you talk to much throughout your videos. so for their benefit, you stopped talking for 5 seconds or less so they could hear whatever tool you were using at the time.
that had me hooked.
i don't actually do woodworking. i know a bit as members of my family build things, i just find your videos entertaining.
never stop being you!
Appreciate that Sheryl!
