Embark are looking for feedback, and good honest critique from a wide range of players will arm them to make the best decisions they can. Yeah embark have unfortunately not communicated it very well at all, it's all ifs buts and maybes for now, but as of current patch with no vanilla EC and the freeing of king Vain it's safe to assume you can use all the tech in this vid
@@I-OMusicincorrect :) people are still being temp banned when people send thru clips of them attacking too quickly with animation cancels on throwing knives and sword
My theory is that it's bannable since controller players have to scroll through a wheel menu in order to emote and creates a hugely unfair advantage. If it was just a skill issue than I doubt they'd go that hard but it's not possible for a good portion of the player base.
I loved this video however I disagree that the dash is the only viable specialization for sword. My primary build is grappling hook + sword and I always carry (for lack of a better word) . You have such great vertically and can close distances so fast. There’s nothing better than charge a lunge to grapple to the top of the church in Monaco to take out a sniper.

Great video! Love the comedy and the publicity for The Finals. I can tell how much time and research (and practice) went into all this. Editing is good too
Phenomenal video! I'm a DEVOUT sword main, picked it up mid season one and it just clicked with me unlike any other weapon in the game, it's got such a fantastically epressive playstyle and i truly feel like no two sword players move and fight in exactly the same ways, zipping and sliding around with dash + sword is just, pure bliss as a video game movement junkie Your feint mechanic is absolutely GENIUS, i learned emote cancelling and quick swapping a while back but eventually had to drop it completely due to the strain handjiving all over the place was giving me, I love this game but i'm not about to shred my tendons for it, lmao. While learning to push my playstyle to its absolute limit without relying on emote/swap canceling has been incredibly fun and challening (I find that sliding and dashing about between cover and really leveraging the environment (and its destruction) engages with the arenas in ways that are really creative and honestly FUN) damn I would love to see some love thrown the sword's way. Not only does learning the timing for perfect feints add a whole new layer of complexity through both mindgames/mixups and the risk/reward of engaging with the mechanic, but GOD it would be so much more accessible in general, I would like a bit of tech that allows for me to continue putting in the work towards developing my skills without the caveat of "damages you irl too :)" Will be doing my part to spread the gospel put forth in this one, PLEASE please please embark listen to this one - keep melee AOE and consider something akin to the feint here
Lmao love the kickflip-comparison. Really great video. I want to add just a few things: You can and always could use hand gestures to emote cancel, which is not only less annoying but also makes it pretty much undetectable for both the enemy and teammates watching your POV or even your own clips. You could also rebind scroll up/down to a key on your keyboard if your gear had that function. I soloq'ed to Rank #666 (still trying to get into Top500) this season Light only and I personally dont switch cancel and stoped emote canceling after patch 2.4. Why 2.4.? Because what you do at 6:17 wasnt possible before that patch and even got patched out again with 2.6., but returned with the melee update in 2.8. IMO this is the best thing to do in most scenarios vs high rank players, because charging a 2nd lunge out in the open even with emote cancel will get you killed too often. Its much better to lunge from cover to cover and hit someone on your way and charge the next lunge somewhere safe and the slide lets you avoid damage much easier while you get behind cover. EDIT: What I mean with "wasn't possible", it was obviously possible to slide after a lunge but only when the whole animation is fully finished. Lunge animation consists of windup+active frames+recovery and now you can slide as soon as "recovery" starts and the active frames are gone, while before 2.4. you had to wait for the recovery to finish as well before you could slide and I also am not completely sure if you could in any direction.

So wait why don’t you emote or switch cancel? This looks like it's gonna be the main discussion thread for this vid, so here's an answer to the "bannable offence" question: Embark have been uncharacteristically uncommunicative on the subject, the most you'll get is a rumour that some guy heard from a redditor who heard it from Ottr. Many players were banned, seemingly manually, for emote cancelling. In at least 300 hours using it, I never was, but if I'd made this video a month ago I probably would've been. Many players have commented on how ridiculous policy was* especially considering they never made any official statement on it (that I know of). As for phantom strike and switch cancelling, nobody has ever been warned or banned for those. A lot of what people think were EC bans were probably just auto-bans for unnaturally fast inputs, no anti-cheat is perfect. I was booted from a game on one occasion by anti-cheat, all I had was expression on scroll. In the past two weeks, two major updates have occurred. Community lead Oscar manually intervened in Vain786's ban to get him unbanned, with the understanding that he wouldn't emote cancel. Days later, they patched it out, arriving at the current patch as of this video's upload. To summarise: The only thing that was ever in question was the legality of Emote Cancel, and Embark still have not made a definitive statement on it. But it's no longer a thing, so please phantom-strike and switch-cancel to your heart's content!
i knew the finals was a ridiculous beast the moment i played it but i could never sink my teeth into it because i didnt care much for the stuff that took more than like 5 mins of practice to get downl, sweet breakdown of the fat of the gameplay definitely makes it easier to understand
The Finals for sure has the best feeling movement in an fps. Its so addicting, like BF3 and Mirrors Edge had a lovechild, im ultra hype theyre expanding melee in season 3
Ever since I used sword I wanted to get its full potential cause of how fun it was, used it and have 300 hours just sword I am conviced this weapon is S tier no joke
The most important takeaway from this video is that you can bind emotes to mouse 1 and hype cancel with regular guns to spam "hype hype hype" during all gunfights and annoy everyone.
Great video, previous comment got deleted. But actually 🤓 the most complex sword mechanics in gaming currently would probably be in Mordhau, Chiv 2 or Renown.
Weird, I ain't out here deleting comments, even heretical ones like yours 💁♂️ Honestly yeah mordhau goes hard, actually working on a sword game with similar mechanics, but fencing instead of combat so it only needs to take place on one axis
14:20 he predicted my every move. He jerbaited me with the suspense into advert jumpscare, and then I started drinking water while it was playing to see "Drink some water.", afterward. Well played, well played.
As a sword user since CB1 with over 1000 hours this video is the best video on my favorite weapon in any game ever!!!! You explained everything soo well, skill expressionists recognize skill expressionists! Now if anyone asks me about sword I am sending them this vid! Ezclap sub
I picked up The Finals a few days ago because of this video and now there is yet another sword player running around the arenas. It's been such a blast so far, and I really do see the potential in the weapon. Thanks for putting this out. :) It was a great, informative watch and put me onto a game that I've been overlooking for a long time.
I personally see the best solution to this is to allow players to cancel their lunge by charging another lunge, by shortening the cooldown between lunges. I'd hate for there to be another button you need to press in order to cancel your lunge, when it could simply just be the lunge key. Remove the bug, and buff sword appropriately to make it's behaviour close to the current one, but without the rebind fuckery that's necessary now.
Love your videos and your takes. Not gonna play the finals any time soon, but your insights were nontheless very entertaining. Hope you can output more good videos like this one.
Asheron's Call had some insane movement tech, in yhe highest level you figure out a rhythm to the speed boost and turn janky movement (yay, I am dodging) into SPEED

Wow, amazing stuff. Such high quality content both from pure entertainment factor and game design. Love your suggestions, this is peak finals content!!
Dang algorithm. I forgot about your channel completely even though I was subscribed. At least it finally brought me back and now I’m binging all your videos.
Not sure if you mentioned it but Remember since the most recent update sword (and-all mele) has a lingering hit box (able to hit two or more players with one swing/right click ) and is one of the biggest buffs sword has got since the start of the game also you can use things like hello/thanks in your emote wheel to cancel
@@I-OMusic love the vid btw and yeah it’s been pretty fun 1v3s high elo against HMM has become pretty doable now Love the vid btw keep it up would love to see more sword content there’s not enough ppl that appreciate the movement in this game
Amazing video! I really like the reload idea - a good design choice that keeps the technical (and most fun) parts of the sword alive, and appeases the one dimensional moaning of players that can't see past the term 'unintended'. Coming from a competitive fighting game background, unintended mechanics push the skill ceiling and become cornerstones of the meta, and it really makes them exciting at the top level, especially when developers respect them and balance around them sensibly. The Finals is the best shooter I've ever played, and the sword is a big part of that. It's a perfect mix of FPS and FGC mechanics with so many layers of depth that I'm so addicted. I've already put 400+ hours in and basically stopped playing any other game. I PRAY that Embark listen to sword players input, rather than blindly following a blanket statements from *notable finals content creator*. I can see balancing implications from the melee multi-hit mechanics that were added, but I'd love to see them sit on this for a while to see how it plays out. Rushing to nerf things on a weekly basis isn't the ideal situation unless something is completely game breaking. We need time to let counterplay develop. Anyways, great video and you have definitely earned a subscriber!
I rebooted my whole channel because of sword. My 1st vid was vanilla sword then i found out about gadget cancels and loved the skill expression behind it. I played the new patch early and yes, they killed my boy. No. More. Gadget swaps... i know one of the reasons they did it is probally cause ottr complained about sword all the time but tbh gadget swaps felt fair a majority of the time. Heavys still have rpg and slam and if you have ever played a single game of ranked you are fighting against both that spec and equip 100% of the time, most likely twice on a team. I will miss you gadget swap... you were loved my boy.... you were loved ❤
Big damage stick go pokey poke Edit: Oh lol - for switch cancelling I just press 2 and 1 really quickly since my scroll wheel is broken (half my sound ECs wouldn't go through)
This is definitely making me wanna play more cool stick, dash is my fav light specialisation and I'm always striving to go beyond the stratosphere in games like tf2 n such
Hi! I want to say; great vid! But next time, It would be great to know I am watching a finals video. From the caption and the thumbnail; I straight up thought I was going to watch a video about online sword fencing or something. And I don't really like having to wait those precious seconds trying to figure out what the video is about; just like waking up in a tub of garlic mayo. Anyways keep up the great work!
Aww mate, have I got the side project for you 😂 I'm actually working on a pov multiplayer fencing game but it's on the backburner. I was a fairly serious fencer for a long time
This... is K-Style...?! GunZ had a very similar story about its melee system. Similarly due to bugs/oversights in design, which elevated the game and honestly, defined its success at the time. Unlike the Finals, GunZ's combat system was the only thing the game had going for it.
This is pretty sick and has shifted my view on light for the better. As someone that does play a lot of fighting games Ive gotten into maining riot shield and sledgehammer A LOT. How do you feel about those weapons? Also when you say "the meta" being charge+rpg how would you change those tools to be conducive for melee players? I think most heavys that want to run melee use those tools to compensate for their lack of range and mobility. Heavy charge is what dash is to light. And when theres light mains playing like whats shown here, the clips speak for themselves, you guys have absurd mobility
Baller editing!!!! Why did i not know you made videos!!! Insta sub, and insta regret for bad research on my part! Also i wish the finals was still popular. It's such a good game and it makes me so upset that it's fallen off like it has.
Thanks man! And because we are both tiny fish in an unfathomably large pond we're bound to miss each other, new super high effort video out tomorrow And yeah me too, I officially quit after 3.8 but I hadn't played since 3.2, I've said my thoughts on it and no matter what I still have hopium Cheers for stopping by, god speed!
Your solution is very nice, I hope the developers will take ispirations. I sure did, I'm tryng to imagine a complex malee combact that uses a lot of animations cancelling and I really REALLY like your way of thinking about the matter
Aww mate there's great to hear, I'll check out your channel when I'm home! If you wanna join my discord we have a good few other devs there, might be a good place for play testing and feedback
Honestly me and my mates have been looking for a techy movement PvP game, Gunz might be the one but we're looking for something with a more casual vibe, but tbh the really technical style of Gunz does appeal to me a lot

the sword was what hooked me to the game
accidently best sword in FPS genre
great video, i love sword (the finals)
shaw!
@@I-OMusic git gud!
Great video, previous comment got deleted.
But actually 🤓 the most complex sword mechanics in gaming currently would probably be in Mordhau, Chiv 2 or Renown.
Weird, I ain't out here deleting comments, even heretical ones like yours 💁♂️
Honestly yeah mordhau goes hard, actually working on a sword game with similar mechanics, but fencing instead of combat so it only needs to take place on one axis
Can't believe I just watched a 28 minute video about a game I'm not interested in.
It’s like this video was make specifically for me
14:20 he predicted my every move. He jerbaited me with the suspense into advert jumpscare, and then I started drinking water while it was playing to see "Drink some water.", afterward. Well played, well played.
unrelated, but the model 1887 is the most skill based shotgun in any game ever. you should make a video on it
unfortunately after 400 hours of nothing but sword my aim has atrophied, you should make that video :p
more finals content pls
As a sword user since CB1 with over 1000 hours this video is the best video on my favorite weapon in any game ever!!!! You explained everything soo well, skill expressionists recognize skill expressionists! Now if anyone asks me about sword I am sending them this vid! Ezclap sub
Hell yeah sword king
this is some high quality stuff
this seems like a great solution to the sword cancel thing!
I picked up The Finals a few days ago because of this video and now there is yet another sword player running around the arenas. It's been such a blast so far, and I really do see the potential in the weapon. Thanks for putting this out. :) It was a great, informative watch and put me onto a game that I've been overlooking for a long time.
bloop bleep I provide the robot overlord with delicious bits to increase the popularity of this video
I personally see the best solution to this is to allow players to cancel their lunge by charging another lunge, by shortening the cooldown between lunges.
I'd hate for there to be another button you need to press in order to cancel your lunge, when it could simply just be the lunge key.
Remove the bug, and buff sword appropriately to make it's behaviour close to the current one, but without the rebind fuckery that's necessary now.
everyone has to reload eventually: laughs in throwing knives
Such a well made video. Its the first time watching you and i was hooked til' the end even with little hours into the game. Subscribed!
Sword players really think they're going quantum physics are here when they're just right clicking (and sometimes left clicking)
Sometimes I press mouse 4
ALGORITHM WE NEED YOUR HELP AAAAAAAAAGHHHHHH !!!
Love your videos and your takes. Not gonna play the finals any time soon, but your insights were nontheless very entertaining. Hope you can output more good videos like this one.
The Finals would never add the Sea of Thieves sword lunge jum- 😳
Asheron's Call had some insane movement tech, in yhe highest level you figure out a rhythm to the speed boost and turn janky movement (yay, I am dodging) into SPEED
I love this video. It's a well-reasoned and respectful examination of a beloved but controversial weapon.
Oohanooga interaction,
Season 3 is missed the diamond skin by one win
Was delightfully surprised to hear music from AC Unity come in at around 7:34.
I just recently finished that game for the first time. Fun coincidence!
I got really confused at first by this comment until I realized what you're actually hearing is the Sherlock theme repitched 😂
Unity is a great shout for an ost to use though
Didn't know the Finals could be a movement game as well
It's movement is phenomenal, just not as flashy as other "movement shooters"
Wow, amazing stuff. Such high quality content both from pure entertainment factor and game design. Love your suggestions, this is peak finals content!!
My man is the third best finals content creator. Just behind ottr and maybe that one guy with a red tv head
You mean Gravity Drop? Yeah I'd rate him similarly highly, thanks for the high praise!
what an insane video bro had to share with my community :D
Thanks brother, appreciate it!
@4:32 nice all tomorrows reference
6:40 "everyone has to reload eventually"
tk and spear users laughing
Dang algorithm. I forgot about your channel completely even though I was subscribed. At least it finally brought me back and now I’m binging all your videos.
Ayy good to hear! I haven't posted anything this high effort in a while tbf
Fantastic video I might pick the finals back up now
IMO they should add a titanfall style wall run and double jump for the light as a passive
This made me think of levels I didnt even know I could. It makes me wish I could get on this level of thinking on any subject. Great video 10/10
the bitrate goes crazy
Yee HDD died during production 😩
You’ve inspired me. Tonight, I start in the dojo. I want to become good with the sword like you.
Honestly yeah everyone's been having a BLAST with multi hits, it's sick!
@@I-OMusic love the vid btw and yeah it’s been pretty fun 1v3s high elo against HMM has become pretty doable now
Love the vid btw keep it up would love to see more sword content there’s not enough ppl that appreciate the movement in this game
waiting till dual katanas come so light medium will have the best showdown
Big fan king
Bro is gonna enjoy season 3 with the new double swords!
This is my exact opinion on the topic. Thank you.
Makes me think of Demoknight! I might check out the Finals.
Low-key been thinking of doing the reverse and checking out demo knight
embark needs to see this
Big damage stick go pokey poke
Edit:
Oh lol - for switch cancelling I just press 2 and 1 really quickly since my scroll wheel is broken (half my sound ECs wouldn't go through)
This is definitely making me wanna play more cool stick, dash is my fav light specialisation and I'm always striving to go beyond the stratosphere in games like tf2 n such
bro looks like a 2014 disney villain
Wait till the face reveal
This makes me miss Tribes and all of the skiing in it
Pretty sure a new tribes game is in the works, I've been loving battlecore arena and warfork lately
I wish there was a little bit more diagrams of what inputs and when to push them
That's fair, although I could never top Vain786's complete sword guide
my mans fucking handsome squidward and we ain't addressing it?
I'm doing what?
I was a fairly serious fencer for a long time
@@I-OMusicThat’s cool! What’s it called? Also, how long have you been fencing?
This... is K-Style...?! GunZ had a very similar story about its melee system. Similarly due to bugs/oversights in design, which elevated the game and honestly, defined its success at the time. Unlike the Finals, GunZ's combat system was the only thing the game had going for it.
The add joke made me legitimately cackle
This is pretty sick and has shifted my view on light for the better.
As someone that does play a lot of fighting games Ive gotten into maining riot shield and sledgehammer A LOT. How do you feel about those weapons?
Also when you say "the meta" being charge+rpg how would you change those tools to be conducive for melee players? I think most heavys that want to run melee use those tools to compensate for their lack of range and mobility.
Heavy charge is what dash is to light. And when theres light mains playing like whats shown here, the clips speak for themselves, you guys have absurd mobility
that joke worked on me
This definitely changed my opinion
most enlightened internet user ^
ngl my opinion changed while researching this video, I used to be a full-on emote cancel apologist
First time I’ve ever subbed because of an ad segue, well done 👍
wait wait wait wait wait. YOURE STICKMAN??? I have you in my friendlist hahahah
duuude good to finally have a text interaction with you lmao, you're a known and respected figure in my squad
Baller editing!!!! Why did i not know you made videos!!! Insta sub, and insta regret for bad research on my part! Also i wish the finals was still popular. It's such a good game and it makes me so upset that it's fallen off like it has.
Thanks man! And because we are both tiny fish in an unfathomably large pond we're bound to miss each other, new super high effort video out tomorrow
And yeah me too, I officially quit after 3.8 but I hadn't played since 3.2, I've said my thoughts on it and no matter what I still have hopium
Cheers for stopping by, god speed!
really cool video man ! comment to give it more visibility (i hope so) and keep going it's an insane quality content 🤩🔥
guys i think he likes the finals (and celeste)
ive never heard of this game but this video got on my home page and is cool so not complaining
Faaaaantastic video bro, keep up the good work!!
@@I-OMusic Don't worry I don't do youtube. But I will join the discord
@@I-OMusic It looks like your invite link under this video is invalid
Dead ahh looked at the runtime
great video thansk
Jesus. Hey, you should check out gunz the duel, its basically this but you can do cancels with guns too. The rabbit hole goes far deeper...
Honestly me and my mates have been looking for a techy movement PvP game, Gunz might be the one but we're looking for something with a more casual vibe, but tbh the really technical style of Gunz does appeal to me a lot
