Hi, great lesson! One question, the KC blues scale is in key of C (5-6-1-2-b3)? It sound this way to me.
Yep that's it! It's pretty much the sound of the blues boiled down to 5 notes.
When you started in with that triplet with the middle 1/8th left out I nearly scrolled out.
But I stayed with you to see how bad this was going to get. Drum Genius is an excellent tool, things were sounding better. I’m a fair way down the road from who you are addressing with this clip, but I was intrigued with this Kansas City blues scale. Who gave it that name ? It’s a great sound and I‘ve played lines like that since coming up in the 70’s. David Baker is “credited” with naming “the bebop scale” for the added chromatic note scale idea. I was in his classes when his first books were published and got them straight away. But kudos were, and still are due to Barry Harris who never used that term, as he made clear. Both gentlemen were fine teachers, and now another piece of jazz language has been appropriated by the academics. So long story short, did you come up with KC blues scale, or if not where did that term originate? BTW your playing has gone up in its feel and you’re sounding good 👍 Good on you, wish you well with your future.
First off, thanks for your kind words about my playing. I work very hard at it so I'm glad that work is coming through. I'm a bit confused about your statement about the triplet with the middle 1/8th left out? Are you referring to the chart at the beginning? This is simply a chart showing the eighth note feel. As you know you should aim for the first and third triplet with swing feel, but as I demonstrated in the video it's not just simply playing that verbatim. I don't really appreciate you staying with it to see "how bad it will get." If you have critiques I'm always open to those (in fact that's how I improve) but saying that makes it seem like there is nothing good to this video. I'm confidant enough in myself to say that I think this video has a lot of great information to offer a newer jazz player, and I would be surprised if you can't see that. As for the KC blues scale, that comes from my past mentor Randy Napoleon. I appreciate you watching the channel and this video.
@@NathanBortonMusic I bristled when I read the "see how bad this was going to get" comment, too. But it's possible the commenter meant it as a compliment, meaning they were expecting it to be bad but kept watching because you actually did a great job (which you did!). I grew up around a lot of elders whose idea of a high praise is "Good to see you didn't mess that up." LOL.

I am very curious about your pronunciation of "swinging". Sounds more like "swinning".
Honestly the video was a bit below my level but I stayed to see if you said "swing" like that the whole time or nah.
Appreciate you watching. Yes I saying swinging weird. I honestly had a lot of nasal issues when I was a kid and learned to say some words weird. I can say it normal, but I have to really link about it. I would rather say it weird and talk natural then the opposite. Check out some of my other videos, there’s some advanced stuff all over!
