You really get RM man. Probably a bit to do with you having similar qualities. Both intelligent, thoughtful, philosophical and determined. He struggled for so long with all the hate and the betrayal from the rappers he thought were his friends, who turned on him when he signed to a company. Everyone has their own opinions but how can anyone deny their talent and genuineness, or lump them as a ‘boyband’ 🤷‍♂️. I’m so glad I found this channel and joined your Patreon. what’s interesting too, is how he emphasises the last syllable of ‘persona’, which is the pronunciation of 나 (na), meaning ‘i’ or ‘me’. he truly manipulates and utilises both languages in such an out-of-the-box way

the “the three syllables of my name and the word ‘but’ that should come before any of those” line is a line towards haters who like to use the “but kim namjoon-" card to turn the focus on him (and bts) to basically nitpick at every little thing he does- it also refers to haters mentioning him when someone mentions the wrongdoings of their own favorite idols.
this line is so much more than that too though, it’s basically the question which intro:persona is all about: but who exactly is kim namjoon?

One interest fact about these three solos tracks that the Rap line did (Persona, Shadow, Ego), all sample intro tracks from their early albums! It's a lovely shoutout to their past selves, and seeing how they've grown, while also looking back on where they started from.
Intro: Persona samples Intro: Skool Love Affair, Outro: Ego samples Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool, Interlude: Shadow samples Intro: O!RUL8,2?

12:28 He's referring to the phrase *"...but (Kim) Namjoon"* Kpop fans have famously adopted for use when their favorite idol/group member does something bad/controversial/problematic. It's become a way of saying "Yeah, what our guys did was bad *but Namjoon* did the same thing that one time". Sort of as a twisted way of using some things RM had done or said in the past to justify someone else's transgressions. As if someone's mistakes is something to barter socially. To me, it is spiteful and simply illogical, yet fan's still persist on doing it.

    • @Indigo_gwen

What makes it worse is that they say that about things that weren't even bad. They were simply things that they themselves twisted to make him look bad.

12:12 : *namjoon said "there's something that raised me up again everytime... the first question."*
(Who the hell am I?) His name is spelled out in three syllables, Kim Nam-jun. Meaning he got himself through all those tough
times and stood back up again.
After hearing "-but Kim Nam-jun" following that phrase is usually either overwhelming praise or brutal criticism he's faced. There's the expectation. So now he flips that same question and turns it into encouragment. Changed from the perspective of doubt to assertiveness.
"so I'm asking once again yeah, who the hell am I? Tell me all your names baby. Do you wanna die? Or do you wanna go? Do you wanna fly? Where's your soul? What's your dream? Do you're think you're alive?"
He goes " I don't know man...but I know one thing... Yeah my name is RM." *He finally answers the question.* When he was younger he named himself "rap monster". After outgrowing that name later on in his life he decided to rename himself as "Real Me. RM." So when he writes the letter to himself, he is dismissing those expectations. He's responding to his own questions and the different versions of himself, good or bad. (CGI RM PERSONA) finally facing himself truthfully after dealing with so many other exterior influences.
It leads him towards the end where he finds truth and validates it. "Persona, who the hell am I? I just wanna go. I just wanna fly. I just wanna give you all the voice till I die. I just wanna give you all the shoulders when you cry." *That's who he is. Thats how he identifies.* 💜😌🙏

Persona is part of the Map of the soul, the book written by Dr. Murray Stein about the Map of the soul by Carl Gustav Jung, a switzer Psychiatrist, who invented it. The Persona is Part of yourself, like the Shadow and the Ego. Basically you have to embrace all of them to see your own self. The Persona is, what you show to the outside world, the Shadow is in your unconsciousness and you have to look at yourself and learn to love even the parts of the unconsciousness, that you rather not want to see to protect yourself from your bad sides. And the Ego is the real you, the one thing that is there if you pull away the persona and the shadow. Dr. Murray Stein himself reacted to the Map of the Soul Albums at a Potcast (for free) from "Jungian Laura". He broke down his own thoughts about the songs and it's really interesting.
A little bit of backgroung knowledge is really helping in understanding the songs of all Map of the soul Albums 😊💜

Last comment haha. I took this from Doolset Bangtan as it’s my favourite line of the song. ‘Yeah my name is R’
Note: (1) The letter R embraces all his rapper-selves: Runch Randa (his stage name as an underground rapper), Rap Monster (his stage name from 2013 to late 2017), and RM (late 2017 to now). It also connects to the lyrics of Answer: Love Yourself: “Yesterday’s me, today’s me, tomorrow’s me. Without exception, altogether, they are all me.”
    (2) From “Voice” (the first track of his first mixtape): “Yeah, I be real. This moment, the thing that I wanted desperately. I’m finally oiling the pedals that I’ve been stepping on for seven years. You can’t kill. Come take it if you do want a piece of me. I only speak through music, I have no interest in anything else. If you really think you ready to fly with my power. This is what R is about, fella the time is now.”

      Who said that?
I'm flabbergasted. I know there are so many rappers out there, just as there are so many singers, but what the BTS rap line brings to the table is irreplaceable.
Whenever I see those types of "critics", I just leave. I don't like, I don't dislike, I don't even comment, I just leave coz it ain't worth my time. It's one thing to say that someone's artistry is not to your taste, but it's another thing to discredit their actual skills.
There are a bunch of artists that I don't like personally, and that's unavoidable. But this doesn't stop me from recognizing their great points. And I believe no one is obligated to commend anyone they don't want to, but it'll be a much nicer world if they just shut their mouths and move on, instead of shitting on people and their life's work.

Great observations! But according to Jung, the Ego (how we see ourselves) is also a false or incomplete view of our true selves, just like the Shadow (what we hide from others) and the Persona (what we show to others). All three must be accepted and embraced in order for a person's sense of self to be in balance. If we rely too much on any one of the three - or reject one, we will have a skewed sense of self. That's the message in the album "Map of the Soul". The shadow and the persona must be integrated with the ego for emotional happiness. If we think we know our true selves, but we have not fully accepted our persona and our shadow, that "true self" we think we are is not true at all.

At first I dismissed BTS too, as just a bunch of pretty boys, and boy am I eating my words. I’ve never seen artists like them. What’s even more wild is that these are the same men who are on Run BTS! It’s insane!

Dude you’re amazing! You work so hard and provide so much content and I hope on some level you get to enjoy the music while analysing. There are sooo many levels to this and woah, you know already knew the literature and references! Of course you do 💜 There’s a lot of Korean wordplay and references here of course but you just get it. RM is a poet and he absolutely loves books and languages . I admire him a lot for his approach to life and how he applies that to songwriting. I know it’s silly to say, but I hope one day he gets to have a conversation with you about music and life. You both have brilliant minds! Thank you and get some rest Knox 💜

Your knowledge knows no bounds and you are the 🐐 reactor. I’m really impressed because and even though you said you were tired, you still smashed it. Really appreciate what you said about RM and BTS. They absolutely don’t deserve the negativity they get. It all boils down to jealousy and capitalism at the end of the day. Ostracised from both Kpop and the US industries lol - that’s fine. They’ve always said music first, charts second and that’s how it should be 🙏

before i knew this channel, everytime i wanna see bts reaction i should find more than one channel. 1 for someone that talk about lyricism, then i'll search another channel that talk about production like music, the beat, instrument, etc, after that i still have to search another channel that talk about visually like cinematography, the mv quality, etc. not only that, i should search another one that talk about the concept and theory. sometimes i search for the choreography if the song have it. BUT AFTER I FOUND YOU i just surprised bcs you TALKED about all of em. production, lyricism, visually, concept, meaning, and the theorys you bring them all in HERE just like one package and im so so happy that i finally found you! mad respect for you bro

today I have been binge watching all his video explanations and i have been an Army for four years. though I knew what the songs meant, for and everything but the way he explains it more deeply, talks and tries to guess the theory about it and knows the value of it. I also do hope that he knows that BTS and especially all the rap line write their own songs like 90% even more than 95% of the time compared to all the other kpop groups. (some people should know whom I am talking about; especially the girl groups) so yeah there is no comparison of BTS to others. I am just not writing this to make other fandoms angry, I am expressing my own thoughts. that's how it is because BTS paved the way belive it or not..( and but obviously a few credits go to PSY and a few 2nd gen kpop songs but they didn't open the gets of kpop around the whole world. BTS DID!)
