LYRICS
Oh life is bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up
That's me in the corner
That's me in the spot-light
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
Every whisper, of every waking hour
I'm choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up
Consider this
Consider this the hint of the century
Consider this the slip
That brought me to my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies come
Flailing around
Now I've said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream
That was just a dream
That's me in the corner
That's me in the spot-light
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream
Try, cry, fly, try
That was just a dream
Just a dream
Just a dream, dream

One of the best songs written. Timeless classic
Everybody Hurts is the other
They’re both amazing songs but there are so many of them in REM’s catalog. World Leader Pretend, Driver 8, Find the River, Man On the Moon, Begin the Begin; so many gems
@@MichaelB769 one I love is a classic too
It's a love song about a relationship that he feels is failing, he doesn't know what to do. I also love his dancing. He is great. "Everybody Hurts" next.
It's about having an unspoken crush on someone, and then watching them with someone else at a party whilst they stayed in a corner losing their temper.
@@mortisrat So it is not a love song, it's a loveless song.
@@mfree80286 Pretty much, yeah.
@@mortisrat Don't you it isn't loveless more like heartbroken?
Yes everybody hurts!!! I love that one
Have to tell you - you are extremely astute for one so young. I was a teacher for almost 25 years, so I've worked with many hundreds of kids, mostly high school age. Your willingness to dig into the meat of a song and work the meanings out of it goes beyond what people two or three times your age are willing and able to do.
John Benante; you said what I was thinking. It's young people like this that give me some hope.
This song is about being obsessed with someone while being so wracked with insecurity that being in love drives you crazy, and trying to hide your feelings from them. It helps to know that "losing your religion" is Southern (R.E.M. is from Georgia) slang for "at the end of my wits/losing my shit," and also to know that Michael Stipe, the lead singer/songwriter, is gay, and so he's really talking about being in love with another guy, a guy who probably isn't gay, and being afraid of giving himself away.
Also, just for future reference, the name of the band is pronounced "Arr Eee Emm," with each letter said separately. "R.E.M." is an acronym for "rapid eye movement," which is movement in the eyes that occurs when you're asleep and dreaming. They're a great band, one of the major players in 90's Alternative Rock. You should check out their songs "Stand," "Happy Shiny People," "Everybody Hurts," and "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?"
Omg! Spot on 👏👏 No need for me to say more. Carry on 🤓
Very spot on.
A point to it with this song and the band in general.
When he grew up, and when he made this music, the world had a very different view on being gay.
Putting the lyrics into the context of him living in a world where in general people thought he was doing something wrong ( and not like today where in general people think its normal for people to follow their heart )
A bit like with Queen, it was something that could ruin people, and there where aids, that also was used against gay people by society in general.
And putting that into the lyrics makes them stand more clear. its not just to fear to say to much because of love, but because if you say to much in a world where what you are saying can be used against you.
And many things, there are really layers to these lyrics.
I just wrote this same comment, but seems like I didn't have to since you already had and 100x better than me
Actually, Stipe describes himself as queer, not gay, since he has dated both men & women.
Thanks mike
You need to watch 'Everybody Hurts' by R.E.M
It's astonishing.
Or Man on the Moon about Andy Kaufman
"It's the End of the World as We Know it (And I Feel Fine)" was my senior song ❤️❤️
Sometimes.
It is said R. E. M. Say each letter. R. E. M.
“Losing my religion” is actually an old southern expression for being at the end of one’s rope, and the moment when politeness gives way to anger. But if you were missing that key detail, you’d think that Stipe’s vague imagery was clearly a comment on the Judeo-Christian tradition.
I was today years old when I learned "losing my religion" is a Southern expression. 50+ years old and still learning...yay? ;)
Yes and I remember several times my Mama offered to help me find my religion lol
In German it is: den Glauben verlieren
(To lose faith)
That’s it’s literal definition, yes, but Michael Stipe has empathically declared that the song has nothing to do with religion. He said it’s about unrequited love; someone who pines for someone who doesn’t love them back. He’s never said anything in reference to song being about the literal expression or religion, though.
It's a double entendre. On the surface, it could be about somebody getting cussin' mad, but on a deeper level, he could be hinting that he's literally ready to give up on religion in all forms.
gosh please react to Everybody Hurts by REM too!
One the biggest songs from the 1990s, HUGE song
The featured string instrument in this song is an acoustic mandolin. It's an instrument that has been around since medieval times and it has survived in the folk music of Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, and American Appalachian and folk music traditions. You hear it in some rock songs, but it's rare enough that people who are not familiar with those other styles of music often can't place what the instrument is. R.E.M. has a large catalog of great songs that range from ballads to bangers. You should check out more of their songs from throughout their career.
You forgot the most important country. Italy. Germany too. But the mandolin comes from Italy. A man named Pasquale Vinaccia of Naples created this instrument.😊
More about being frustrated. Southern slang like at the breaking point.
R.E.M. (and when you say it, you spell it out, like R-E-M) has decades of singles for you to choose from, so it's only right that you start with what is undeniably their biggest hit. Michael Stipe is one of the preeminent vocalists and songwriters of the 80s, 90s, and beyond. There are too many great songs for me to recommend, so I'll just list a few of my favorites - "Everybody Hurts" (one of the greatest songs EVER), "Radio Free Europe" (their very first hit), "Bang and Blame", "Man on the Moon", and "What's the Frequency Kenneth?" And yes, R.E.M.'s music is very artistic. They make you think. The lyrics are deep, often so much so that you can't discern a meaning. But that doesn't make it any less enjoyable to listen to.
Love them all but my fave is the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine.
Add Finest Worksong and Fall on Me to that list :)
Find the River ❤️
@@CarltonNoles you should hear Great Big Sea's version of "The End of the World".
I love that you picked this one, but you have to listen to the lyrics very carefully. This one's really deep and surely can have different meanings for everyone listening. For my understanding it's about a man losing his faith in himself, people and God. He's lost trying to find himself again, questioning everything he thought he knew, felt and believed. I love REM and miss their performances. Just great artists all around💛
I think it’s about a failing relationship but I agree that it’s so well written that it transcends that completely. So technically Jojo is right but so are you 🖤❤️🖤❤️
This song is about having a crush on someone and never having told them - and then standing on the corner at a party and losing your temper while you watch them with someone else.
The lead singer is gay, so probably didn't tell most of his crushes in his teens, and had to watch them with girls at parties.
'Losing my Religion' in an expression meaning losing your temper. The song is nothing to do with religion.
"Everybody Hurts" is one of the Top 10 songs EVER. And the video is pure art, it will make you cry, guaranteed.
Now try listening without the hood between your ears and the headphones. It will sound even better!
"Losing my religion" is a southern phrase meaning about the same thing as "being so disoriented that you can't point to which way is up", just way more picturesque and way more serious.
This brings me back. I'm 37, so I guess I'm getting old, but I remember listening to this as a kid in the 90s, driving in my dad's Firebird.
Can I just say, it's so cool that you're diving into older music. Not just music you like but other genres. Seeing you getting into Eminem and Linkin Park just geeks me out. I love seeing people appreciate music.
Getting old? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Good God, I watched Frank Sinatra on Ed Sullivan. Getting old..37😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@bobbiehofer4924 Just missed watching Ed Sullivan (born '60), but I totally understand what you mean!!
@Melissa Wow, do people that old know how to type on a computer/phone?!! 😳
J/K, I'm only a year younger.... Please don't take offence. 😜
The instrument that stands out is the mandolin. It's like a little acoustic guitar sort of instrument and once R.E.M. played this tune on SNL and it was maybe one of the 5 greatest musical moments of 50 years of SNL. 😁
Rod Stewart has the mandolin in a vast majority of his music.
songs like this stay in your memory for decades. Even now close to 40 years later I will turn up the volume on this one
This is one of my favorite songs of all time! You should check out Everybody Hurts, it's deep! Thanks Jojo for the reaction
"Losing my religion" is a southern thing meaning losing control and doing or saying something you would regret later.
Another great song for you to react to would be Soul Asylum - Runaway Train.
Yes! And maybe Del Amitri - Driving With the Brakes On
Absolutely.
Man, one of my favorite songs. When I was young, I'd wait for the radio to play it so I could record it on this cassette tape back to back, since we didn't have "repeat" yet.
Losing one’s religion is giving up hope
I agree that "Everybody hurts" should be next. Such an exceptional song
Might also be worth noting that many people (myself included) consider this one of the best, if not the best, music video of all time. So many subtle details to the story it tells.
It's art. No cap.
REM is REM. Hard to really classify beyond "alternative rock." As a Georgia girl, I grew up with their music and I never get tired of it. Every album sounds different, but all sound like REM. Highly recommend some of the older stuff "It's the End of the World As We Know It" and "Perfect Circle." Maybe "Driver 8." Also "Bittersweet Me," "Orange Crush".... I could really go on and would eventually have covered all their albums.
id like to see him sing along with its the end of the world.🤣
R.E.M
the one I love
radio free europe
orange crush
the end of the world
man on the moon
“It’s the End of the World As We Know It” plays at the beginning of Independence Day, starring Will Smith. Great movie. Fun to watch on July 4. I haven’t seen the sequel because I heard it wasn’t worth it.
Love REM. These guys, Indigo Girls, and Tori Amos was my high school
I watch you Dad all the time and to be honest this the first time that I have watched you.. You see as insightful and curious as you dad.. the apple does not fall far from the great tree.. I will watch you again..
Everybody hurts is a must. Although it’s a hard song to keep your composure listening to. It’s beautiful though. It should be the anthem for mental health.
***WHAT I LOVE SO MUCH ABOUT SONGS LIKE THIS, IS THAT, IT IS UP FOR INTERPERTATION, BY THE LISTENER***
***AND TYPING IN ALL CAPS SO EVERYONE KNOWS IM SAYING IT LOUDLY*** 🤣
@@unoriginalsyn And don't forget, bold print too!! LOL 🤣😆🤣
"Oh life, it's bigger. It's bigger than you, and you are not me." Words to live by. I met this man in Lexington Kentucky and didn't recognize him at all. He bought us a round of beers and left the bar. It wasn't until he left that someone told me who he was. Was very disappointed to not talk to him more.
Losing My Religion, released as the first single from the R.E.M.’s 1991 album Out of Time is definitely a remarkable song. With its beautiful, and rather surreal music video, it listed 4th on The Billboard Hot 100, was nominated for several Grammy Awards from which won two, and was constantly spun on the MTV.
The music video was directed by an Indian director - Trasem Singh, who admitted that it was modeled after the Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings in which an angel crashes into a town and the villagers have varied reactions to him. The clip has a moody art house feeling to it, and was created in a style of a type of Indian filmmaking, where according to Stipe everything would be “melodramatic and very dreamlike”. The video was also based on the inspirations drawn from an Italian painter Caravaggio, as the scenes from the clip strongly resemble the style of the painter’s work, and filled with religious motives and tableaux, or, so called “living images” portraying Indian deities.
Many controversies occurred with the song’s questioning of faith, however unlike it may seem, it actually is about unrequited love. The phrase “losing my religion” is an expression from the southern region of the US, that means “at my wit’s end,” meaning as if things were going so bad you could lose your faith in God.
Mike Stipe ( singer) was dear friends with Kurt Cobain. Mike Stipe and Patti Smith, the poetess of New York punk and CBGB's, did a gorgeous song together, called Ebow, the letter. It is serenely, hauntingly addictive.
I've heard this song over 1,000 times. Never gets old.✌🌻🌻
I love watching people discover
R. E. M. for the first time.
First, the band is called R.E.M., letter by letter 😎
Second, this is one of those songs that a generation listened and defined with, is recognizable everywhere, and will live forever 👍
The letters are from Rapid Eye Movement, a stage of sleep.
The deepest stage of sleep when you’re dreaming
I just sent the lyrics to my friend who's on remand who was a bad boy back in the day... said, get the wing to sing it!
He's just devoted his heart to me since the email, bless! ❤❤❤
it was thought that the bands name came from the acronym R.E.M meaning comes from the dream stage of sleep known as Rapid Eye Movement however the band says it doesn't but I still question that as their songs tend to be dreamy lol
Jojo love your open mind and great reactions!
Music, when done well, is art. I enjoy your passion and will continue to watch your reactions. Thank you for making them.
That song marked a great time of my life, t'was the 80's, I'm 62 today, still have shivers when I listen to it, I envy you for listening to this for the first time!!
“losing my religion” is a southern way expression that basically means losing your shit, “ you got me losin my religion up in here” . The song is about being secretly in love with someone and the fear of being exposed, wondering if they feel the same way but to confess would be too risky so he’s just kinda trapped
This is what is known as alternative music. R.E.M. pronounced R - E - M are their own sub genre within the genre of Alternative music. They started losing something of what made them R.E.M. after their album “Monster.” I remember the VMA’s the summer of 1991, right before my freshman year in high school. They won a lot of awards that year. Michael Stipe, the lead singer, wore layers of t-shirts so every time they came up he wore one with a different saying. For their last award he kept stopping during his speech to take a shirt off because he wore one for every award that they had a category for and he wanted to show them all.
The groups name is R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement) Not REM as a word. His dancing in this video is Awesome!! This song is Timeless!!! 😍
REM is my all time favorite band of all time, Michale Stipe is a brilliant song writer.
I met these guys in the 80’s when they were recording their second album. They are definitely some of the most down the earth artists I’ve ever met.
Losing faith, losing love, losing hope, losing religion, losing what you thought you had. Its coming to that crossroads where you know you will diverge and it’s sad.
It is the crying of the soul, nothing calm about a HAUNTING story of loss!
one of my Fav. Songs
This is my favorite song and i listened to it lots of times. He said things that I had no idea about. He really knows his music.
It is a very moving song that speaks to your soul with every beat and heart beat.
Got to see these guys live! What a show. They have so many classics, and Michael Stipe’s voice is amazing,
The guy who wrote the song said in an interview that in the area of the south he is from the expression "Losing my religion" means that you are upset to the point that you are about to lose your control.
They started when they were college students in Athens, GA. They were college radio darlings in the 80s when college radio was all alternative. They eventually had some decent top 40 radio friendly hits when alternative became more mainstream. I saw them in concert in the late 80s. Lots of hits to choose from.
First gig I ever went to was their Monster tour in 1995!
R.E.M. ... True artists & poets.
Thanks for playing something from my time. Awesome song, awesome band. Georgia amphitheater. GO DAWGS. AWESOME CONCERT
You're picking great songs lately! Keep up the discovery of legendary, classic music! 👍
"Everybody Hurts" is one I would highly recommend.
REM.....brilliant. My favorite college band
This was a huge hit when it came out. That was around 1990, and signaled the beginning of alternative rock in the mainstream. R.E.M had been around since the early 80's, but this was a breakthrough.
This was my introduction to REM. I was in grade 9 and it blew my mind.
REM is some of the greatest music of all time.....Period
This is one of the greatest songs EVER! And I mean it when I say ever.
This is one of the first songs that started the trend of songs with cryptic lyrics that everyone could interpret their own way and quirky, random music videos.
Country Feedback live on Jools Holland is a masterpiece. I love REM, my other faves are So. Central Rain, Fall On Me, Crush With Eyeliner and Try Not To Breathe.
So fun fact. My middle/high school librarian has one of the original REM drum kits because she was friends with the band in college and they were going to toss and she wanted to learn drums.
“Bang and Blame” is another great REM song, JMHO.
You gotta do more REM...Fall On Me, So. Central Rain, Everybody Hurts, Sweetness Follows, The One I Love to name a few
Radio Free Europe
this was the theme song on the original 90210 with the love triangle between Brenda, Dylan and Kelley. They would play it all the time.
Miss ‘em. You should check out more of their discography, they influenced a lot of modern artists
I’m not usually a fan of reaction videos but I’m enjoying yours. Your comments are thoughtful and even when I disagree because I know a song’s backstory or a musician’s history, you make me think about the songs in new ways. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and fresh perspective!
I liked your connection to this. Emotional connection is massive
Jo totally got this, Jojo. Lost in love & left high & dry.
This is one of those songs that gets stuck in your head. But at the time, it made a lot of sense.
Stipe has repeatedly stated that the song's lyrics are not about religion. The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate. Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression. He told Q that "Losing My Religion" is about "someone who pines for someone else. It's unrequited love, what have you. Stipe compared the song's theme to "Every Breath You Take" (1983) by The Police, saying, "It's just a classic obsession pop song. I've always felt the best kinds of songs are the ones where anybody can listen to it, put themselves in it and say, 'Yeah, that's me.
REM's song, "The One I Love" from their "Document" album is the track that took the band from being 80s college radio darlings into the biggest alternative band on the planet. It's a phenomenal track~
Jojo... I'm impressed with your reactions for such a young dude. You pick up on many things' others' miss. My ol' butt really enjoys your views, an' I go back musically listenin' to Buddy Holley before his death.
Founded by John Paul Jones (bass and keyboard player of Led Zeppelin) ✌
Great observation. Everybody Hurts is another good REM song with a fantastic video.
I felt you all the way with this song. Wasn't sure if I was subscribed to you or not, but I was going to, then I saw that I already was, and that just makes me so much more confident that you aren't fooling us. I only subscribe to the ones that are real! Thanks for being real!
Scratch that earlier recommendation, I got my diver songs mixed up. Listen to “the first rebreather”. It’s about the diver that used the experimental system to walk 1000 ft underwater in the dark to rescue a tunnel project for the first transcontinental railroad in England
Love R.E.M!!!!!! Btw you are one of my favorite reactors!!!! It's so cool you do all types of music ❤️
Bro! You’re interpretation is spot on.
Think about what it would be like to literally lose your religion-to discover that everything you believed was wrong, that you had to find the strength to carry your truth through all the hurt of feeling like you failed, wasted your time, made a terrible mistake. Now apply that to a relationship: your doubt and insecurity overcome you, you question your beliefs and actions, but you can’t unlearn your truth.
'Losing My Religion' is an expression meaning to lose your temper. This song is about having a crush on someone and not telling them, not about an existing relationship - and then being at a party while they're with someone else and you're in the corner losing your temper. The singer is gay, and so probably didn't get to tell his teen crushes, and also had to watch them with girls at parties. It's nothing to do with religion/belief.
The singer, Michael Stipe, said that 'losing my religion' means 'throwing up'.
Rem is R.E.M. welcome to alternative rock. Need to react to Everybody Hurts.
look at all those shoes! love it!
"Everybody Hurts" is one of my very favorite songs by them, and one of my all time favorite songs ever!
That song, Everybody Hurts, hits you in the heart and soul.
You got it. basically I am losing my mind, faith and everything else..
You need to listen to 'It's the end of the world as we know it' by R.E.M. Oh, R.E.M. stands for rapid eye movement, a phase of sleeping
Listen to Jerry Rafferty's Baker Street. That sax gives me chills every time I hear it.
this song is my rainny day song. it sounds really good with rain❤
You hqve good taste young man. This is one of the highlights of music. Have you ever done a-ha? Their leadsingers vocals are perplexingly good.
The expression "losing my religion" means like losing your patience or losing your temper. "Oh no, I said too much" he's saying that he really likes somebody but is afraid of letting his feelings show too much, "I said too much, I haven't said enough." Your feeling about it being a love song is on target! A lot of people don't get it, but you got it!! R.E.M. is my favorite band, their first music came out in 1982. This video is well known, so I'm happy you did this version. Going forward, pick live versions of songs, they are the best! Try "Everybody Hurts" next.
Gold! Pronounced rem, it's R. E. M. Each letter individually.
Doubtless can be read on different levels. Early on is the image of St Sebastian, - shot by the arrow - so there is both religious and homoerotic imagery right the way through. It is quite deep I think and you can zone into different aspects of the song and video. In any case it's very powerful.
I've always loved this song.. and the video. A lot of imagery inspired by the artist Caravaggio
the song really got to you, dont deny it we see it you tone and eyes!!!
Your insight for a young dude is impressive. 👍🏾
If you enjoyed this one, I recommend listening to some Tragically Hip. A staple Canadian band that perhaps didn't make it big in the States because R.E.M. competed with a similar sound. Gord Downie (RIP) was a legend, and a masterful songwrriter and performer. So many good songs, I don't even know which one to recommend starting with but here are some options: New Orleans is Sinking, Blow at High Dough, Bobcaygeon, 38 Years Old, Little Bones, Ahead by a Century, or Poets. Songs I grew up with and will forever enjoy. Speaking on behalf of your Canadian rock fans, we would LOVE to see a reaction!
More R.E.M. !!!
R.E.M. is unique ... like The Presidents of the United States of America, or PRIMUS.
They have the courage to "Stand" alone, and play the type of music they want. ... (this song -CHARTED- with a Ukilele) ... "Do you like it, if not I'm gonna keep playing it anyway"
You said it succinctly Jojo ... "This Is Art"
Some Things are "Music" some things are "Noise" ... ... R.E.M. are "Shiny Happy People" and we could use more of them!!
