I've been crocheting, off and on, for about 30+ years. The past 5 years I've been seriously crocheting, now that the kids are grown, etc...
This video has opened my eyes to so many things I didn't know, or think about, before. The small toolkits, wip baskets, manicure scissors, etc... So many light bulb moments!
I am going to continue with your beginner videos because I'm learning new stuff all the time!
Thank you for taking the time to help newbies, as we as us older crocheters! This bird is learning new tricks! 😊

Great video for beginners!!! (some of us "oldies" might also learn a tip or two...) Thank you for the valuable info!!
Neck Light - NEED!!! You can use it for so many other things in addition to crafting.
Good, comfortable hooks, for sure! My take on this one is - go by what's comfortable for you, even it that's the metal hooks. (most likely that if you ever try a Clover Amour, you'll never go back to the metal ones... just saying! Good idea to buy just a couple, before investing in a full set)
Yarn - work with good quality yarn. It can be cheap or expensive. There are some great cheaper yarns out there. If you're just beginning, watch several yarn haul/review/unboxing videos, to establish your own opinion before purchasing any specific yarn.

Very good video. I started Way back when I was 9 years old , it been a 50 year journey so far, and I had no one to teach me except myself. We didn't have the internet so i went to the library and checked out craft books. Some of the patterns were old and goofy, so i learned to make up patterns on my own. There are several things I've learned to help myself....1) learn to read and graph out your stitches, it helps with figuring out a tough spot in a pattern or to remember a small series of repeating stitches in a pattern. 2) keep a notebook when working on a project, you CNA keep track of yarn and hook you use and changes or special notes for a project if you want to make it again. 3) I do use baskets, buckets, for small to medium projects.but I also use larger bins for larger projects. I keep my tools in one smallish snap type box, instead of several tins for each project. That is why I keep notebooks to record what each project needs. 4) I use plain aluminum hooks and hold my hook like a bicycle handle when working, and I found that the sportwrap athletes use makes an excellent gripp on my hook. It's easy to apply, wraps to itself, and can be easily added to or removed. 5) I've found that, for me, I use only an I hook,or a 5.5mm, when I make my Afghans. Makes it easy to keep track of. I love to crochet and I love your show. Thanks so much.

This is great. I used to crochet years ago but I've always enjoyed knitting more. However, my mum used to crochet afghans for all the new grandchildren and now I'm a new grandmother so decided to make an afghan. Do I ever need practice. I used to crochet evenly without much trouble but I'm finding now it's awkward and the stitches aren't even. I'm amazed watching you crochet as all your movements look very smooth. I'm starting this series in order to practice and re-learn what I used to know. Looking forward to it.

A very useful video for beginners or those, like me, who are starting again. About 18 years ago I went on a mostly knitting, with some crocheting, frenzy. Then I quit after 2 years and numerous scarves, hats and fingerless gloves.
A few weeks ago I became interested again, but discovered that my very large yarn collection contains no worsted or other weight acrylic. It's all wool, much of it bulky, and many kinds of fuzzy, sparkly, bumpy, or eyelash yarn!
Woe is me. Fortunately I have all the "needs", and more.

This is just lovely! I’ve been crocheting for years, but still like watching beginner videos. I wish there were videos like this 30 years ago when I started learning! My favorite hooks are my clover and furls hooks. I started learning on the boye/bates hooks, but my hands started cramping after awhile. I think when first learning, it’s good to start on the boye/bates hooks, but once you start doing projects, upgrade to hooks with grips on them or splurge on the furls hooks. You are a great teacher!!! Keep up the great work! 🥰🥰

This was a VERY good idea Christa! Well I can tell you that I have both a set of the Clover and Red Tulip hooks. And I am a pencil grip crocheter and I enjoy using both. I have NO problems using either. I don't have any little tins like you use, which I must say is a wonderful idea. What I do instead, if I may share, is I write down on the yarn label which hook I'm using for that project and I use Zip Lock bags, or I have a little project journal that I write down who the project is for (if it's a gift), the stitch name I'm using, the brand and colorway of yarn, starting chain, stitch multiple, project measurements, and which hook I'm using. I've also added, and this is strictly for me, the date I started the project and the finish date. Because I'm one of those that tends to get bored and will start another project. So if I put the dates it kinda puts a "fire under my backside" to get back to it and finish it. LOL! Thank you Christa sooo much for your tutorials and the time you take to produce them for all of us in the crochet community. Stay Hooked!

Hi Christa, I have been crocheting since the late 60's and enjoyed your review for the newbies. I started out with the metal Susan Bates and Boye. Later I found a local craftsman that made wooden hooks which worked very well, Recently I discovered Hobbi Lobby's Yarnnology and Michael's now carries Prym hooks which are similar and I like working with both. Your tip I found most useful during the past year was the retractable measuring tape. I mostly crochet afghans for a charity and keep a log of stitch, yarn, and finished size and the new tape was a wonderful suggestion. I also used your suggestion of the neck light which I got for Christmas. Love it!! As I am old school, I use a piece of yarn for a stitch marker. Thank you for your channels. I am getting a lot of helpful ideas and suggestions from you. Happy New Year !!

I love this video. I do have the stanwood ball winder and swift but I got a super good deal around thanksgiving or Christmas one year and paid less than half of the price for both. Im glad that I got it because I was a newbie and I was making a blanket. Somewhere I got off on the stitch count and way down the line I discovered my mistake. It was so much yarn to frog. I stopped...ordered the yarn ball winder and swift that I had just seen on a podcast and I wound up all those balls of yarn when it got delivered to me. Made starting that blanket over a whole lot easier than having yarn all over the floor tangled up in a huge mess. You are right....dont do blankets as a beginner! LOL

I shared your video with someone who wants to learn to crochet!
    - I "cannot do without" my little SODIAL(R) Yarn Winder I bought 2 years ago from Amazon; it hardly takes any space on my multi-use table so it is permanently fixed on it, yet it takes at least 100g skein of any yarn I have thrown at it. Cakes don't roll around the floor like bullet skeins or balls and winding is fast. I also have a big Stanwood (it can barely cope with 200g) but I have only used it once: it takes lots of space and the cakes from my little winder are of better quality.
    - An alternative to a necklight could be a magnifying glass with a light that you can hang from the neck or the same but in a form of a table lamp. Useful if you get into crocheting thin yarn in the future. I have all three but I have never used my neck light... I can see myself cooking with it during powercuts though.
    - Clear plastic boxes with lids are also good for wips. I have several stacked in the corner. Mine are transparent so I can see what's in them.
    - I also like using spiral stitch marker rings. They are easier to put on than safety pins and usually cost less - but they are not as secure as safety pins if you move the project around.
It just shows that apart from the must-have hook, yarn, and scissors everyone has their own idea of the list. ☺

This a very good video. I've been crocheting for a lot of years (more than 50) with just a hook, scissors, yarn & sometimes a needle. I just discovered stitch markers in the last year. And I picked up a neck light at my Lowe's hardware & lumber store last week - it takes batteries. I did finally also get a large yarn ball winder (to make it easier on my wrists - I'm 58), off from Amazon for around $40 - I checked them out with other people first & shopped for my best deal. I totally agree with everything that you said in this video, some people want to buy all of the bells & whistles to start & invest a lot of money that they really don't need to.

Great video, useful even for older crocheter. An alternative to the neck light is a forehead light. I got 2 rechargeable ones so that 1 is always ready. I'd add magnifying glasses to the list of handy things, or a magnifying glass at least (but this could be an age-related suggestion). I especially like your diy handles on the threaders.

Great new content Krista! After crocheting for 10 years, I find that starting out, we tend to try everything until we realize what we really don’t need. If I were a new crocheter, I would’ve started out with clover, hands down! Lol. My favorite worsted weight to this day is and always will be, 4 worsted, although I use 5 bulky Bernat blanket yarn for baby blankets. As for stitch markers, I make my own after purchasing and losing them in various work, I make my own stitch markers, lol.

My first love as a hook goes is and will always be clover soft touch. I have recently started using clover amour. I do like them especially for acrylic yarn. The soft touch can be used on any yarn and it's just comfortable and allows you to keep consistent tension. Favorite yarn is paintbox with stylecraft a close second. The pallets are wide with 56 to 78 colors choices. Inexpensive for a quality yarn. Good for stash building.

very nice and helpful videos for beginners to watch, after watching this you will know everything you need :)
i also totally agree with those lighted up hooks. when i started i saw those and got a set in order to use it at nighttime when i cant sleep (i have very strong sleeping issues almost my entire life) but they arent very helpful. they cause headaches and hurt the eyes and the material they are made of (at least mine) isnt very nice-almost every sort of yarn makes squeaky sounds, especially acrylic, and they are also quite fragile-the smaller sizes snap of very easy. and its not that i got the super cheap sets for 10$, it was a middle range priced set (i believe about 30-35$). but im very picky with crochet hooks in general-if the hook is bad, the project will not turn out as nice as it could be and a bad hook can also ruin the entire fun. you dont need super expensive ones, but they have to be good.
