This album may not be the best in terms of production and melodies, but the lyrics are incredible.

Emotionally hit harder by your background music during your talk in the end more than by this DM particular song 😂

Martin at the time about Poorman:
"'Poor Man' people could say, 'OK, how could you say that [as a rich man]? But I agree in paying taxes and I would be quite happy to pay higher taxes. I think huge multi-national corporations should be paying tax and they should be paying large amounts of tax; I don't think it's right to do a deal with a country and not pay tax"

This song is somewhat hypocritical. Charging $500 for normal concert tickets. Not once but twice on the MM tour.....

I do not know. Having a hard time grasping Depeche Mode around this time period in the 2000s and 2010s. The sound is mostly super stiff, the rhythm is monotonous, Dave's voice is often distorted, Martin has added a vibrato to his voice - which makes him sound more like an opera or cabaret singer.
And on top of that, the songs are on average weaker than before, in my opinion.
But it's a pleasure to follow your Depeche Mode journey, and it makes one listen again to many of these songs that were misplaced in oblivion. Poorman falls into the category of such songs, in my opinion.

It's been a pleasure to go through their entire catalogue in order, a LOT of ups and downs along the way though haha

Lunchmeat ends. When my Dad got laid off during a Union strike... Yeah. We bought bargain basement groceries because my parents had to bootstrap to pay the bills.
So we ate lunch meat ends on toasted bread that was actually stale (if you toast stale bread you don't notice that it's stale).
Not for a long time. But for one whole summer that's how it was for us.
My Mom had to go back to work but there was no way she was gonna make as much as my Dad in a week (he got paid 30+ dollars an hour, solid pay for a factory worker).
My Mom worked temp jobs until the Union reps and the Corporate heads hammered out a deal that they both could live with. Took them MONTHS. Meanwhile families took the financial hit and if they didn't have any savings they were S.O.L.
This is why I am very distrustful of corporate people. They do not take into consideration the trickle down effect of their actions.
I could really get into it, what happened here in the U.S. during the whole bail out debacle.
    But I won't.
I will say being the daughter of a blue- collar worker and growing up surrounded by blue- collar worker types I have WAY more respect for them than I do for corporate guys.
My Dad worked himself into an early grave, he worked his BUTT off to support his family and to leave us something after he was gone.
I had no idea he had left each of us something. He never told us about that.
But when I found out I just... Bawled. I completely lost it. I wanted my Dad back. I didn't want what he left me. I wanted him back.
I could not tell you what I would do just to get a hug from him.
    Obviously we were close.
    Anyway now I'm crying.
This song + plus your words Seph brought back memories.
Beautiful reaction Seph. Really beautiful. Your words hit close to the bone but in a good way.
And I agree with you on trickle down economics. Yep. You got it.
Anyhoodles! Hope you & yours are doing well Seph 💖✌🙏💕

Depeche have always challenged people to think about what is going on in the world, and to not just accept things as normal.
Some of the music is a hard listen, not because of the tunes, or the production, but because of the content.
Yes, they are all multimillionaires, but they do try to make a difference. Check out their work with Charity:Water

Everything Counts pt II. Just with some bluesy guitar, lol.
I understand some folks criticized 'Spirit' for getting political. Given what was going on in the US at the time (and, remember, 2 of the 3 bandmates lived here at the time,) how could they not?
Also, the folks who made that complaint must've never heard "People Are People," or, "Shouldn't Have Done That," or- hell- anything off 'Construction Time Again.'

The problem is not the system, is the human condition.
Systems are Made by human condition.
If You use capitalism, is this song.
If You use socialism, is poverty and crime.
You should help people, but Lot Of them don't take advantage of it and abuse it. It happened in Argentina, and is happening in France.
Maybe goverment help is not genuine, maybe is hypocrisy and useful, this is human condition

Strange statement since the US has more poverty and crime than most of the socialistic european countries....

Corporations donate money sure, and they get great big tax write off's on it, also i wish people would wise up to the "hey do you want to round up your total to an even number and give it to (enter charity here) " . It is a scam, that company is taking your extra money and donating it in their name, and taking the tax write off on your money people.

Coincidentally, what I like most about this song is the instrumental part, those strange sounds at the beginning and as it progresses, more guitars and a forceful bass drum are added, as if it were a march. I love the melody, and I generally like the vocal effect in Dave, but on this album they abused that a lot to give it a more dull and protesting tone, and I think that takes away the shine or charm of the album. album, it feels too dull for my taste, even so I can say that this song along with You Move, Cover Me and No More are the ones I like (without going crazy)

Musically 🎼 not their greatest. The subject obviously is complex. Speaking as an American, the last thing we want is Socialism, because that just leads to everyone being miserable. The other side of the corporate coin is government policy. All these fair trade deals and sending all the manufacturering overseas have decimated our economy, while corporations get tax breaks. One solution is support local businesses and stop going to the giant box stores. Keep your money local.

  • @ComposerJoakimS

I don't listen to DM for the politics. It's far to naive and left-leaning for my taste, so I tend to ignore it and listen to the music instead. I think the big corporation have a tremendously positive impact on society. Just as an example: You get to create your videos and reach potentially million of viewers for free. I get to watch your videos for free. Who pays for all that infrastructure? Big corporations. They also create millions of jobs and make life easier for everyone with their products. Big corporations are not our enemy. Bad government who steal our tax money and spend it on useless or counter-productive things are.

they made a left wing anti trump album that shows their essex stupidity having lack of education. dm fan 30 years a fan but this album makes me gag. i like their new lp and despite all this so called charity with Hublot its to siphene the 300 million they earned on their last Memento Mori tour. Disgracful. was a decent tour, but too old to change the setlist.
