  • Need to make a short petticoat with lots of POOF? Here’s the tutorial just for you!
    Here's how I make my petticoats without the use of a gathering foot.
    This is perfect for an advanced beginner - intermediate sewer.
    Any questions, please ask!
    What you'll need:
    - Tulle (ie. a roll of in either 6 or 12 inch) - can also work with organza
    - Ribbon
    - Lining material
    - Elastic
    - Sewing machine
    - Scissors
    - Tape measure
    - Thread
    - Pins

      It is quite memorising how the fabric moves like liquid- at this that is what I have found ^_^

    *For measuring your material:*
    Top Section - Waist Size x 2 (per layer)
    Middle Section - Top Section x 3 (per layer)
    Bottom Section - Middle Section x 3 (per layer)
    Ribbon - Length of Bottom Section (per layer)
    Ribbon or Elastic about the length of you waist (a little bigger to be on the safe side)
    Underskirt - Desired Length +1 cm by Hip Size +5-10 cm
    *This is what I have gathered from question and answers of the comment section, so if anyone sees this, maybe it'll help them out. Of course, part of this is in the video, I just wanted to put it all together.*
    *If you want the steps written out, here is a "brief" step by step too:*
    1. Measure & cut the layers of tulle & ribbon. ~Label each layer to help you stay organized.~
    2. Iron ribbon in half with the nice side out. ~Trim & burn edges to stop fraying~
    3. Wedge the bottom section of the tulle into the inside fold of ribbon. Sew into place.
    4. Gather down layers by hand & sew together, do this for all layers. (this goes in better detail in the video: 2:10 )
    a) Fold tulle in half until you find 7 sections in the top layer. Repeat on the mid section.
    b) Line up the pins on the top & mid sections.
    c) Find center points of each pin to ensure a more even gather.
    e) Sew layers down, continuing to gather down by eye.
    f) Repeat to attach the middle and bottom sections. Making sure the ribbon is on the bottom of the three layers.
    The other method you can use, uses the same process but the fabric is sewn into loops first.
    5. Measure your desired length of underskirt & add one centimeter. Measure your hips and add 5-10 cm.
    6. With your measurements, mark & cut a rectangle. Create a rolled hem on one edge. This is the bottom edge. Over lock sides & top to prevent fraying. ~If making the tutu with the elastic, sew the sides together.~
    7. Pin the three layers of the top sections together & sew it.
    8. Find the center points of your tulle & lining, and pin together. Proceed to gather down the tulle & lining, so you can sew the layers together.
    *Fitted Waist Band:*
    - Take your ribbon (with burned & trimmed edges) & pin it equally around the top edge of your tutu. Sew it down.
    - Fold Ribbon over, towards the insides, pin down, and sew again.
    - Sew each layer together, and attach hook & eyes at the waist band.
    *Elasticated Waist Band:*
    - Make a loop of your elastic at your desired length. Pin it into place by finding the center points.
    - Pull the fabric and elastic firm while sewing it together. Sew once at the top and bottom to prevent your elastic from rolling.
    - Make sure you sew each layer together, so you do not have an open side. (It seems like you can do this before attaching the waist band, probably around when you attach the lining.
    *How to Make the Petticoat Longer*
    There’s two ways you can add length to the petticoat;
    Option 1: Add more sections.
    - This option is pretty straight forward, I personally would probably continue to keep each added layer at 3x your waist length, unless you want more volume and then you could make it bigger.
    Option 2: Find tulle that’s wider than 6”
    - Usually you can find 12” tulle rolls but they may not be long enough. If you need to sew rolls together, just overlap the tulle a bit (1/2-1”) and sew down it with match thread.
    - You can also use a bolt of tulle and cut it into strips of your desired length. This can be tedious depending on how much fabric you are needing to make your petticoat.
    - Use a combination of a bolt and 6” or 12” rolls

    Super excited to try this out with light ivory tulle and (possibly) yellow or blue ribbon!
    I'm a complete beginner when it comes to sewing clothes with machines (as I had only made plush toys and sewed sections onto dresses by hand), but with a little bit of thinking and searching through the comments, I think I'll be able to figure it out!
    I'm making a Trickster Jane cosplay almost entirely from scratch (save for the wig and shoes, of course).I'm even making the dress and her huge jujupop, and I'm so glad I found this! I'm sure it'll add the perfect amount of trickster floof to her dress!

    I personally find that hand stitching the gathers makes for a much neater and cleaner look overall. Though it is quite time consuming to say the least. Measuring and evening the gathers with the use of pins was a very clever idea. I will most certainly employ this technique in future projects.

    Wanted to thank you again for this tutorial. It took awhile (because working with black tulle was a bit hard on my eyes) but my petticoat is done. Although it's not 100% perfect since it's a bit croaked on the underskirt, I love it because it's exactly what I wanted.
    I've spent less than $10 making this myself whereas anything remotely close to what I want is $20 or more thanks to shipping and those are either only 2 thin layers, too long, or with absolutely no real poof like I want.
    On another note, perhaps it was just me or my machine but both my ruffler and shirring foot didn't do too well with the tulle. Though knowing my luck now that I'm done if I were to try again it'll go through without a problem.

      The underskirt will keep it from being itchy. Lining fabric doesn't cost that much at all, you can probably get the amount you need for around $10.

    Hello! Thank you for this tutorial oml TAT I’ve been searching the internet for a DIY Petticoat that I actually like, and yours looks so perfect ahhh! SO MUCH POOF
    I would like to ask a few questions, for the tulle, did you completely use all 100 yards of it? (As in when you did the longest layers on the bottom, did you do them 18 meters long each, or did you just use the rest of the 100 yards, split it into 3 and forget about exact measurements?). And, how much ribbon did you need to line each layer?
    Sorry if I’m confusing lmfao, I just want to make sure I get everything right when I make it for my Kanna cosplay! I’ve already bought the tulle off amazon, but I’m not sure how much ribbon I’ll need ;;
    Thank you!!! I hope you see this 😭💕💕

    • @KirileeCosplay
      @KirileeCosplay  6 років тому +4

      Anuraxan to be honest- I actually did four of the bottom sections (with the remainder of what was left over divided into four - I said three in the video just to make it easier to follow for the tutorial). The bottom layer, I attached two bottom sections.
      To figure out the ribbon, it was measuring how much would be in the bottom sections :)
      I hope that makes sense

    Hi! In was wondering how you matched up the top, middle, and bottom sections for sewing. The pinning method is a little confusing for me

    • @KirileeCosplay
      @KirileeCosplay  6 років тому +1

      Sarah Valentine you can always try a different way of marking equal amount of sections between two layers you line up- such as a felt tip marker.
      I use pins to do this because they don't leave a mark

    • @Sarahv7896
      @Sarahv7896 6 років тому

      Kirilee Cosplay ooohhh, so it's not that you're pinning them together necessarily, just marking it?

    • @KirileeCosplay
      @KirileeCosplay  6 років тому +1

      Sarah Valentine once they are marked out, pining the two pieces together helps to get and even amount of rather right way around

  • @Jay-gh8mo
    @Jay-gh8mo 3 роки тому +3

    2:43 is confusing to me, it might be a sewing term which I don't know of because this is one of my first ever sewing projects. Did she just pin them down to have correct placement or were those markers for sewing?
    Also, would this project be possible sewing by hand even if it take time, or would it be way more worth it to buy a sewing machine?

    • @KirileeCosplay
      @KirileeCosplay  3 роки тому +1

      You have it correct. I used the pins to Mark the placement before I pinned it all together.
      You can sew it by hand but considering with a machine (and with the ribbon detailing)’it took me 18-19 hours to complete, I wouldn’t recommend it. If you can borrow a sewing machine, that would be the best bet!

      It doesn't strike me as a beginner's project, that's for sure. After working on a shirt that had a gathered neckline, this made a lot more sense to me. As much as you may want to head straight for the project that you want to make, it's much better to just make some more basic clothes first.
      I've found that by working with free "patterns" on UA-cam where there technically is no pattern, but rather me doing measurements, cutting fabric to a specific shape, and then sewing those shapes together to form the clothing in question, I understand some of these more vague "tutorials" a lot better.
      Don't worry about making mistakes and having to rip out stitches. That's part of the learning process. Always do mock-ups with cheap fabric first (plain linen or muslin are usually pretty cheap) - you'll probably find that you needed do something different in the process and by doing a mock-up, you don't waste fabric that you wanted to be in a final product.
