Thank you for recommending Darkside Psychic. Fantastic. Purchased a regular version but now have the vinyl me please version on the way. Watching your channel from Canada- great!
Another great video homeboy. I just subscribed to the vinyl me please this video Because they carry hip-hop. Thanks for letting people know about this website. also showcasing hip-hop music. A lot of audio guys don’t even appreciate my type of music. That’s why I rock with you. Keep up the great work. God bless.
Great video Michael. VMP's edition of Psychic is sensational. The music is great and the VMP pressing sounds great. It's a shame that so many people have overlooked this wonderful release. I like country, but I'm not a huge fan. Taking that into consideration, I think VMP has done a great job with the Country series. Cash's is very good - I think you don't miss a lot - I mean, the album is a classic, but I'm sure there are better pressings. Shotgun Willie seemed excellent to me. I really liked Simpson's too. With their recent repressings I have been able to really enjoy the Miles and Coltrane one (I'm in the mood for the KoB UHQR).
Hi Michael, Camp Lo " Uptown Saturday Night " is a great hip hop classic of which there happens to be a VMP pressing and as I've mentioned before.... Jorge Ben's "Africa Brasil" (mastered by Kevin Gray ) is a sensational VMP release I think you'd REALLY appreciate.
Michael, another great video. I was completely unaware of the VMP label and the band Darkside. I listened to Darkside on Spotify and really liked them. I went to the VMP website and it appears that you have to become a 'member' in order to buy their product which I was not interested in doing. So I went on Ebay and found a vendor in Vancouver, (I am close by on Vancouver Island), selling a sealed VMP vinyl copy for $48 Canadian so I picked it up. I am really looking forward to getting especially after you waxed lyrical about the sound quality. Keep up the excellent work. Cheers, Dave Bishop.
Darkside, it's a great album and it's nice to get off the Blue Note/MoFi/AP train for a bit. Recently I have been buying the J-Jazz stuff on BBE and the Japanese ambient on the WRWTFWW and Light in the Attic labels. Some amazing stuff there, especially Hiroshi Yoshimura's Green, which has been a favourite for 18 months or so.
Because of your videos, I'm very interested on getting VMP classic series, sadly, they ran out of room on their subscriptions, so it's very hard for anyone to get into those releases nowadays. I hope soon they can accommodate more people on their subscriptions. Best wishes from Chile!
I have a copy of that VMP pressing of A Night at The Opera from the first batch they sold. Perhaps I was unlucky but mine sounds absolutely terrible in quiet parts due to the floor noise. I have 2 or 3 other VMP records (black vinyl) with no issues.
The key insight here is - VMP is not audiophile quality. The 2013 pressing of Darkside - Psychic is amazing. Did VMP use the same plates? Honestly that album is just really well recorded to start with.
Michael! I don't know if you heard but Acoustic Sounds is cancelling all backorders and no longer allowing backordered titles to be purchased. Four months ago I ordered Chet Baker Sings and Grant Green's Nigeria. They just sent me an email with the announcement. I also had a third Chet record ordered with them from craft recordings and I won't get that either. Oh well.
I loved the King Curtis record and I thought the music and sound was terrific. I also liked the liner notes, one of the best booklets I’ve read from them. King Curtis is a legend so to have this record in great sound is a real plus. Maybe you have to be a King Curtis fan.
I just got in the VMP Metal Box Set. I have no idea what I was thinking, I bought a metal box set. I must have been drinking. Good to hear your thoughts on VMP. I never was a fan of Queen but the one you got would be the one to buy. Steve
Interesting that you are so fond of VMP. I bought their first time to vinyl release of Fiona Apple's When The Pawn.... and the sound quality was abysmal and I'm not even talking about the pressing. The master/mix whatever you want to call it had nothing when compared to the original CD release. Just out of curiosity, are these records you talk about purchased or are you sent review copies by the labels?
@@Michael45RPM Good to know, please keep it this way! :-) I was disappointed with WTP. It was a wasted opportunity and not a worthy 1st on vinyl release. Perhaps it is emotional given what this album means to me, but I expected a better outcome or at least parity with the original. In my opinion an Audiophile company should not put out an inferior release and gee they only had to beat a CD from the 90s. Anyway, I forgot to mention my gratitude for your time in creating this content, it is appreciated. You're one of the only guys on here that doesn't go off on a tangent or contradicts their opinions in the same video.
Great video! Are you picking up the new Can - LIVE IN STUTTGART 1975? I have a been listening to a digital copy of this album nonstop - not audiophile but really incredible music.
Hi Michael. I never bought from VMP before. I'm interested in the King Curtis. They are sold out now. Do they repress this type of release? Thanks, Charles
It doesn't hurt them at all and it also protects your covers from ringwear. I began storing my albums out of the sleeve a few years back after buying some beautiful Japanese pressings there were 30+ years old and were mint as mint could be. What I noticed was that the gentleman I had purchased them from kept the record outside of the sleeve. That was proof enough for me as they had been stored this way for decades.
Michael, your really hurting me financially as I may have to sign up to VMP for the Darkside release. It is available on standard vinyl at a much cheaper price but there seems to be complaints on the pressing quality. By the way, in nearly all cases, a clean UK pressing of any Queen album from the 70's will beat any of the reissues including the Bob Ludwig remasters.
On a different note..Michael you have to do a showing of the new Blue Note reissue 'Katanga' with Curtis Amy and Dupree Bolton..gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous 😍
I share our fine Dusseldorf friend's obsession with detail. His dislike of color vinyl for country music! I agree! Full confession: I will not buy an album (or DVD) if the cover art is unattractive! I'm THAT neurotic!
So, if I understand, you do advise to buy again the Darkside album… because it's so much better than the original. Why a record from 2013 it's not outstanding in the first place? This makes me kind of sad.
@@Michael45RPM I do… It wasn't clear for me what you said (thanks). In the meanwhile and since your channel is also good to remember me of a few great records I have, I gave it a pretty good listening. I fucking love it.
The original Sturgil Simpson 'Meta' sounds 'good', but of course that is relative and subjective. The music itself is fantastic. You are right, that vinyl color is horrible!🙄
The Sturgill album is incredible, probably my favorite record of the last 10 years (I have the original pressing, not the VMP). But I suspect the recording itself is not up to your audiophile standards and is not made to shine on your system. Sturgill and his producer Dave Cobb are known to prefer a grimy, relatively low-fi sound. I love it on my humble system, but it may not be the best on yours.
Thank you for recommending Darkside Psychic. Fantastic. Purchased a regular version but now have the vinyl me please version on the way. Watching your channel from Canada- great!
The bass on a Young Thug record made Michael purr/roar... love it!
That Queen album floored me. It sounds incredible. Thanks for the suggestions

The OG english pressing of A night at the Opera is stunning! So dynamic!
Nice vinyl collection I like queen
I think Queen ll was their best release.
Congrats on purchasing Michael Hobson's Classic Records archieve!!!! I know you will enjoy and take impeccable care of it!!!

After hearing the high praise for it, I just ordered 'A Night At The Opera'.

Never would have imagined you liking Young Thug. Glad to see you branching out to other Generes!
Thank you Michael. I have a Queen Night At......orig US press, but I haven't compared it. I will let you know my thoughts.
Oh cool please do so
I didn't get the Sturgil Simpson, but I loved Shotgun Willie. I can't imagine that sounding much better.

Queen's "A Night at the Opera" may be their best. I personally prefer "Sheer Heart Attack" as their best with "Opera" coming in second.
I agree psychic is an awesome release.
If I can get used to candy colored black metal you can get used to cotton candy country 😂

Looking forward to your promised in-depth review of VMP's "The Story of Herbie Hancock".....
The dcc version of night at the opera is the one to own marsted by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray as you say a audiophile firework
Does the DCC blow away the MFSL or is it close? Thank You.

They do every now and then. Athough you never know for sure of course
Thoughts on the VMP Ben Webster Quintet: Soulville?
I do not have this one
The Works of 84 is my best queen album... but anato is 2ns best!
Does storing records out of the jackets like that hurt the records? Interested in those VSS sleeves but unsure of the dual pocket
I nam quite sure it does not hurt them, i think it safer for them to be outside the sleeves, special outside Gatefold sleeves

Sorry if i missed it, any thoughts on Jazz Images records releases ?
No, not yet sorry
Jazz Images is one of those terrible public domain labels. I’d avoid.
all albums are limited to seibentausendzweihundertvierundfunfzig copies only!
Can you tell us who is the manufacturer of the record shelf in the background?
It looks so slim and filigree, are the plates made of metal or wood?
It is Custom made and out of Black Steel
Regarding originals, hard to say. I have original Johnny Cash monos, they sound terrific
