My final comment: every label that Mike sells and advocates and every pressing plant that manufactures them, whether QRP, RTI, Record Industry, Optimal or Pallas distributes or manufactures defective records. Many arrive at my home with split seams or other defects in manufacturing or packing and that includes Mo-Fi One Steps. No pressing plant or record manufacturer achieves perfection. Mike could make that same nasty video he made about ERC about Mo-Fi, Analogue Productions, Sam Records, Chasing The Dragon, Music Matters, Blue Note Tone Poet etc. or any specialty label that he sells but he chose to single out ERC. Why? If you, his acolytes think it’s ok to trash a company trying to do good work and mostly succeeding, that’s your call. And if you wish to call me names and impugn my integrity for pointing it out to your little circle of friends, be my guest. I did my job.

I think people who buy ERC records typically have enough money that they are going to buy them no matter what anyone says about them. ERC records sell out super fast and have a huge collectibility factor. I doubt one man’s opinion will hurt ERC.
Mike has a point about the scale of operation - when you make 1 record a month and pump out 300 records they ought to be absolutely perfect. ERC opens themselves up to this kind of criticism with their astronomically high prices. The game they are playing opens themselves up to criticism other audiophile labels are immune to.

Yes, Analogue Planet, you have done your job. It can be said that every production plant has errors and as far as ERC, Mike has politely expressed his opinion and in the same breath highlighted ERC's high points. You, like a total coward, started a useless video regarding record brushes and lacquers and in a passive aggressive manor dovetailed your dialogue into dragging another professional through the mud. It seems a simple apology regarding a misunderstanding would be the remedy but not expected.

All arguments get thrown out the door when someone uses a sharpie on a record at that price . I’m still laughing at the absurdity of that . Even how serious it actually is . To sell something as “brand new” and at an outrageous price and it’s literally been vandalised!! is so shocking it’s laughable .

I’ve been casually following Michael Fremer for 30 years. I’ve read his articles and watched many of his videos. I’ve been watching Mike In Groove’s videos for one year. I’ve now purchased several hundred dollars worth of records from his website. And guess what- I trust Mike more than Michael. Mike tells it like it is. He’s got no axe to grind. He’s going to sell records with me or without me. Fremer gives off the sense that he survives and thrives off of free “review merch.” Plus he has an attitude. Listen, I’m grateful that Fremer has kept up the fight for decades. I really am. But when it comes to spending my hard-earned $$$, I’m going to trust Mike In Groove every time.

I'm a local in Phoenix and love seeing Mike and the gang. I even take my 9 year old son and am getting him into vinyl now. I always try and ask Mike about one copy versus another and he always gives a great and informative response. Recently I saw an album from my youth (the Cars Heartbeat City). They had a version for $10 and another for $40. I asked him what the difference was and he said the $40 was unopened and if I planned on listening to it I should get the $10 version. Knowing how Mike cleans all his used records (some of the best items I have purchased from him were used $5 classical albums!), I knew it would sound great. And it does. No BS from him. Keep up the amazing work Mike! And yes, if I ever buy a $500+ NEW record, that sucker better be pristine!

I can only speak to my experience with my first (and sadly last) purchase from ERC. I bought the stereo pressing of Everybody Digs Bill Evans. The packaging, jacket, and inner were all very well done; beautiful in fact. Unfortunately, the LP was extremely noisy, even after 2 cleanings. After I contacted them, they quickly responded and replaced the record and apologised, but the replacement, while better, was still noisy. Not what I would expect from a £350 record. I haven’t tried my luck with ERC again, which is a shame because I really like the concept of a small bespoke audiophile label hand printing their jackets and using an all valve system.

This could have been such a great conversation about something that is on the surface super interesting for both his and your viewers. While i don't agree with his method, I imagine when he gets intimate entry into these companies, personal visits, interviews, and the free records on top, that they all add to create a level of allegiance.. so when you comment in a way that has the potential of impacting the livelihood of someone he may have a close relationship with, he naturally is in defensive mode.. in the same way his comments must haves felt as an attack on your livelihood. Fremer has not even endorsed this particular product. His issue was with claims about the nature of lacquers in general. Who is he "protecting" exactly? I don't think Fremer has misrepresented the inherent longevity of lacquers. I think his actual demo speaks volumes to the fact that he not only believes what he is saying about lacquers but that he offered unimpeachable objective evidence in support. I have had many an argument with Fremer and I have no problem calling him out when I think he is wrong about something. Ask Fremer. But the idea that he is being dishonest to protect either company, both of whose products sell out, is some conspiracy theory garbage IMO.

Having watched and read Fremer over the years, I suspect (I don't KNOW, but I SUSPECT) that he's pretty forthcoming about when things are good or not. I think the difference may be that when he gets a record sent to him from ERC, it's a record that has been carefully inspected before shipping because ERC knows that if Fremer gets a bad one, the negative publicity could be devastating. In contrast, when you or I make an actual purchase, we are just randomly receiving one of their products. Personally, I'll always give more weight to the opinion of the person who paid their own money for a product rather than a person who is reviewing something that was sent to them for free.

Michael Fremer has a home system that is worth more than a million dollars. How does he afford that? In a video tour of his listening room made for Stereophile, a listening room which is nothing more than a very cramped basement, he states that it is "none of our business" how he affords his insane system, and then implies that the reason he can afford it is the lucrative proceeds from a video he sells showing people how to set up their turntables. Which is so preposterous as to be insulting. If he had a trust fund or a very rich spouse or some other legit reason he could afford a rig that is truly a .0001 percent type of set up, he could also afford a better listening room. But... high end audio companies don't comp reviewers with real estate, do they? I seriously think that until Fremer credibly explains his relationship to the ultra high end audio world and why he has a billionaire's system in his basement, he should keep his mouth shut about anyone else's integrity or need to apologize for anything.

I’m with Mike on this one. Exactly what are you paying for when you spend $500 on a new sealed Lp limited to 300 pressings? Isn’t the idea to have a higher quality record with higher standards? Then it’s not ok for that $500 record to have bubbles or any defects whatsoever. At only 300 copies (not 3,000+) is it too much to ask for each copy to be inspected and rejected for flaws, defects, etc of any kind? Absolutely not and Fremer…who I think has in the past demonstrated that he can be a self righteous full of himself know it all asshole…is wrong and missing the point. Wouldn’t be the first time, sucker bet it won’t be the last

I trust anyone who sells records for a living, and also buys and listens to records as a consumer. Not an entitled reviewer who gets free review copies of everything (and I suspect many of those are hand-picked by the labels so the reviewer gets a perfect copy--I'm sick of the "I've never had a problem" replies from certain reviewers after I'd been through a few awful pressings of the exact same title). I am no longer buying new vinyl pressings due to so many issues I've had with them and, on one of my other channels, will be doing a Hall of Shame video to call them out. Inexcusable for the price being charged today.
I have, however, been buying sealed, new old stock records that play back better than these new pressings, for far less cost. Granted, they are mostly rarities and had low pressing runs, never reissued digitally either, so it's not an issue of choosing from dozens of pressings (like trying to find a decent ABC copy of a Steely Dan record, which nobody seems to agree on).
I rarely buy vinyl on road trips (especially in hotter climates), but next time I'm in Phoenix, you can plan on me parking myself in the store for an hour or two to scour the bins. 😁

I enjoy In grooves shootouts , I follow others who I look towards info on vinyl , but the reason I enjoy in grooves channel , in what he says in the beginning of every video , Brick 🧱 and mortar shop. To me that’s means an establishment that represents the small guys in the vinyl community. I’m a diesel mechanic on a budget , my hi fi system is basic but I feel will reproduce the best sound quality for the budget and that includes vinyl , if Mike says that this is the best copy to look for in a shootout , Damit I’m going hunting for that copy and if it’s pricey , I’ll save up , that’s why I work . If I shell out over $500 dollars for a reissue, it better be prestine , there is no reason in having defects , you only made 300 !!!! Quality control should be a cinch . Mike keep on what you are doing brother , I’m done watching the other guys channel . This has proven my first impression of him. It’s must be an age thing .

I trust Mike’s integrity and know he is not afraid to say what needs to be said. Quality control should be much tighter from a company that charges more than ten times the average Mofi or Analogue Productions etc. Fremer is not spending his hard earned money on these expensive records so he is a little out of touch with the average collector who not getting free records. Fremer cannot be impartial if he excepts free records whether it is conscious or not. He is deluding himself. He won’t risk losing out on free stuff.

Fremer deserves respect for helping to keep the vinyl torch going during the dark years, but he’s a know-it-all who acts like a big f’n baby if anyone challenges his “expertise”. I remember him insulting the entirety of the Steve Hoffman forum because of conversations about pitch problems on some of the earlier Blue Note re-issues…simply because HE couldn’t hear the issues. While I acknowledge Michael Fremer's position in the vinyl community, Mike has truly laid out in a very cogent way the craziness that some of the audiophile labels are getting away with. Exposing the reality of sub par records--being sold for exorbitant amounts of money is necessary to bring the industry back to Earth and administer a dose of reality. I also agree with Mike's point concerning the fragility of lacquers and clearly laying out their intended uses and not letting others pull the wool of the collective public's eyes.

Mike, your comments on lacquers are fair, and I always appreciate your opinions and advice. I generally like Michael Fremer’s videos and reviews and his dry wit, but I never knew that he gets all these records for free. He should have disclosed that. I agree that tens of thousands of dollars of free product has to affect someone’s reviews of ERC product. Fremer has no skin in the game. When I spend $50 on a record and get an inferior copy, it smarts. But if someone gave me that record for free, it probably wouldn’t bother me as much. For over $500 a record from ERC, it is right to expect perfection. Also, I bet Fremer doesn’t just get a random record from the stack. His review copy is probably carefully inspected by ERC before going out to him, knowing it is going to be reviewed.

I think it is general knoweldge at this point? All (90%+) of his reveiws are freebies from either cartridges to records. Some I believe he might get asked to send back, but majority he keeps, especially records. There is a reason he links to stores whenever he review a record or announce it (Like ERC and Music Direct). Not disputing his integrity, but it is hard to take a review with 100% facevalue when it based on something for free that actually worth ton of money.

I love your channel, especially the shootouts and agree with all of your findings there as well as I believe in your honesty, also in case of ERC and lacquers. Keep on with this,!
Although Michael Fremer also tells what he thinks generally, he partly seems less questioning towards the record industry for more or less good reasons, yes. But you’re both not as far apart as it seems right now. Just bury this as soon as you both can, we need both of you with your points of view. You both are the most reliable and professional vinyl and mastering reviewers and observers of the scene out there. Don’t stop with what both of you are doing. I trust both of you while I consider Fremer”s stronger industry promoter role and your straight talk without caring more than needed for diplomacy towards the record industry, which I really appreciate very much. I think finally your different points of view are rather depending on different personal experiences with those products and character of your publications than with your even higher independence of the record industry (which in paired with you experience is very valuable for us watchers).

IMO reviewers who receive free equipment are always compromised and have to be taken with a grain of salt. Even if they mean well, there’s always bias. For example, if a product sucks the reviewer may not post a review which creates a type of publication bias. My point is these things are subtle which is why I always prefer reviewers who are detached from the manufacture. An example is Amir from Audio Science. And I believe Mike also falls in this camp
