Larry the Cable guy is one of those characters that is played so well that it’s hard to accept the guy off the screen. That’s when you know he’s good at his job.
It’s almost like he’s trying to convince us he doesn’t have an accent. But to me he still sounds like a southern dude trying to sound northern.

HERPY DERPEDY
You have a good point. I have traveled a bit, and while I could easily understand those with an Irish accent, I'll admit I couldn't understand the Highland or Northern English of some folks in Britain, but that is likely due to a lack of familiarity with the speech patterns and local dialects.

I believe this is called code switching! Really interesting how some of us do this.
Yes
I very much agree
Yup! It’s code switching. I know I do it all the time since at work I “lose” my Hispanic accent
I've done a lot of online gaming with people from MANY different countries and I tend to code switch. It's awkward when someone thinks I'm making fun of them since it's not intentional, so I'm a bit more aware of it.

True. A lot of people from the lower Midwest have elements of the Midland South accent. A lot of people don't realize there's more than one southern accent and there's more than one midwestern accent
Henry Volk very slight southern accent but that's all
It does and my dad was from Nebraska and moved to north Georgia in the early 60s until he died last year and the combo of the two accents developed into a somewhat midland accent . Funny thing is Dalton Ga where his roommate was from is just 15 minutes down the road from us

Well he spent his early childhood in Nebraska, went to high school in Florida, had roommates in college from Texas and Georgia, and worked in Omaha, Kansas City, and Orlando during the first part of his career (thanks, Wikipedia!). So that's not surprising.
His natural voice is NOT southern. He's from Nebraska. He naturally has a midwestern accent and if you watch his work in the 1980s, you hear this much more clearly. He's relaxing his voice more in the interview.
Can confirm, Kentuckian. Sounds like a lot of people around here.

Razor Ramon code switching is using two languages in the same sentence or conversation. not picking up an accent that's around you. I'm sure there is a term for it though
I thought this was called "revertigo." Or maybe that just refers to one's character or personality.
This is true, I was backpacking in nz for awhile and made some English friends and kiwi friends after two weeks a few drinks in me and I talked just like them. I literally would try to stop and I couldn't. The brain is so interesting lol.
Not all of us. Only those who have an accent that's deemed uncouth, unsophisticated, stupid, or just stigmatized in some way. Southerners, southern black, New York, Boston, Latin LA, Latin Miami, etc. No way in hell middle-class suburban white people code switch. They don't have to. They rule the world so everyone else has to sound like them in order to have credibility.
I learned it as style shifting or switching "register", those terms are used interchangeably for what he's doing.
