Interview with M D Ramanathan

- This is the full interview of Shri. M D Ramanathan by Dr. Amy Catlin and Dr. Frederick Liberman in Dec 1977 at Chennai. In this interview, MDR recollects his musical background, his Guru and shares his general views on state of carnatic music in the late 70's.
How kind of Balaji to post this interview footage. We can hear the child Balaji's voice speaking to his mother - "Who has come?" - and singing at the beginning of the interview, held on the terrace of Thiru MD Ramanathan's home in Adaiyar. When my professor Fredric Lieberman offered to bring 3/4" VHS video
equipment from Seattle to document my favorite musicians, my mentor in Madras, Thiru T.S. Parthasarathy, made the arrangements for the interview and concert at Rosie Jayalakshi's house. We are so fortunate to relive and share these meaningful experiences with others.
We cannot thank you enough for capturing this footage. Your questions are so appropriate. You are so lucky to have met and interviewed MDR. Thanks a ton for having recorded this.
@@samagni Thank you for your appreciation, and to TS Parthasarathy and Fredric Lieberman and architect Rosie Jayalakshmi for making it possible. I hope you can find and share comparable gems in Kerala's cultural treasure trove.
@@amycatlin-jairazbhoy4578 Ma'am...Feels great messaging you here. Did you get to video record such interviews of other great Carnatic Musicians who lived in that era or is it only Sri M D Ramanathan you have interviewed? Kindly share interviews of other greats in case you have.

Jayadev Menon

@@amycatlin-jairazbhoy4578 Thanks a lot for your reply ma'am. Will surely check it out.
He is brutally open
The part where he says a music should be suggestive of the infinite.. that’s where his connection to the divinity is. True master and a Nadopasaka ❤️. Happy Birthday dear MDR, the most cutest person ❤️
I am eternally indebted to you for having uploaded this gem of an interview. Epic stuff! I feel so fortunate to have listened to MDR speak on meaningful pauses, the grandeur amd enormity of true music which resemble the mighty ocean and whatnot. A real treasure🙏🙏🙏
Dear Kris,
Thanks for the note.
I'm just the messenger here.. real thanks and appreciation goes to Dr. Amy Catlin and Dr.Fred Lieberman who took the initiative to capture these moments.
Best Regards,
Balaji
@@mdrbalaji Just out of curiosity, are these the same people who recorded that 1 hour video concert of MDR?
@@krisn90 Yes indeed. This session was recorded during that visit.
13:19 "as long as a musician can maintain his integrity and individuality, the mystery will always be there" a simple yet powerful statement.
Such a treasure! Great clarity of thought and true passion. What a colossus and a great mind 🙏
While I was in Kalakshetra there was a small group of musicians such as this one, MD Ramanathan. All of us had to learn music, as a support to our dance lessons, and coming into contact with these great artists was such a gift! They were "old school", and lived for their art. When he is asked about the present, how classical musicians are accepted, can survive through their music, he is almost lost! He wouldn't have thought about this much, but sang and lived in his own musical world, steeped in the lessons of his guru and his tradition. I was fortunate to accompany him to the Thyagaraja Aradhana festival. All doors opened to us, because of his presence. Shrines closed for the afternoon were opened, and he burst into song again and again, purely for the deity! We were invited into the home of Shyama Shastri's descendent, and allowed to hold the Tambura knobs of one of Carnatic music's greatest composers. Nearly sixty years ago, a treasured experience!
Wow, I was searching for information about the guru-shishya relationship between Vid. Tiger Varadhachari sir and Vid. M.D Ramanathan and I got this video uploaded just hours ago!!!! Thank you!!!
Tears in my eyes. What a simple humble but highly intellectual and sophisticated soul.
Yes, you’re right..
Thank you so much for sharing this! MDR was very well articulate and it is always a pleasure to listen to such legends speak about their experiences. This is truly a “mysterious affair” like MDR says.
Mysterious affair😅👌
I have heard when MDR - Lalgudi - PMI used to perform.......most of the times.......MDR may not show the thalam, as it used to be his way of singing...........and the determination he had in his layam sense. .......and the accompanists were in sync with him to the extent that there won't be a lapse or a flaw in the eyes of watchful listeners.......
All singing is not music. The musician whose compositions and singing that creates magic in our life even today. Thanks for sharing this precious video. Brings one to tears
Wonderful. He opens up different & new dimensions of Carnatic music.
His interview thrills you & is blissful like his concert. There can never be another like him in stage performance.
R.Vasudevan Jakkasamudram.
A classic interview with MDR whom I interviewed way back in in 1973 and am fortunate to have his blessings and love. Wonderful musician and a wonderful human being. Unfortunately we didn’t have the facility to record the conversations. Balaji must be commended and thanked for this interview. MDR mama is a gem rare and serene in the ocean of our Carnatic music.
Very beautiful and crisp interview.his mastery over the languages peaks of his fluency overenglish language.
Thanks so much. Could go on listening for hours. What deep thought! As deep as his music.

Balaji Sir, thank you so much for uploading this interview. MDR is one of my favourite musicians. I remember meeting him (my grandmother knew him) before a concert in Bangalore when I was about 4 or 5 years old. Paripalaya and Rama Rama are one of the first songs I remember and fell in love with

Hello, @Ananthakrishna P, nice to see you here. Take care.
@@vichartatwa Hello Vichar Tatwa! I hope you are doing fine.
@@ananthakrishnap5507 Only sort of, Ananthakrishna. I've had my share of Covid woes, and for a very long time now. I have that Kishori Hamsadhwani in mind, but haven't really had the peace of mind to listen to it with any care. Heard her Hamsadhwani in the very early nineties of the last century, and it's still vivid, but my ears have changed so much by now that I'd like to hear it again. Hmmm... life is like that, I suppose. You know what's good, but can't take it! You take care, Ananthakrishna.
This generation has to follow this guru & sishya relation. Very great Shri. MDR Sir.
What a genius, such clarity of thought and expression. Erudite and articulate. Thank you for sharing this gem!
