    Very cool, creative show with so many good elements put together. A friend turned me onto this when I was in elementary school. My favorite thing about it was the theme of course but it was slick, so well coordinated, the hosts were so good and so positive with the kids, there was humor, and it had an overall positive energy. The educational part was just gravy. Makes me very nostalgic. Kids today don't really have stuff like this.

    • @tonyp9313
      @tonyp9313 2 роки тому

      What's so creative? It's 1/3 multiple choice. You don't have to finish 1st place in this. It's a rip off of Jeopordy. They don't even win money. On top of that finishing 1st doesn't even matter. You can finish 2nd & beat the 1st place person. Then like the end it's really hard to know those places on the map unless you study it. I'm sure if you study a map it'll be that much easier to memorize the countries.

    • @benjaminschultz2582
      @benjaminschultz2582 2 роки тому +10

      @@tonyp9313 You've completely missed the point of the show. It's not a substitute for actually doing the work yourself. Kind of like movies of great novels aren't substitutes for reading them. The show was created partially in response to the results of a National Geographic survey done before the show's creation that indicated Americans had alarmingly little knowledge of geography, with one in four unable to locate the Soviet Union or the Pacific Ocean. Its premise was to raise awareness and engage audiences, especially young people. I'd suggest watching the cast Zoom reunion so you know what went into it to fully appreciate what these folks did, which was not easy. Plus you'd have to take into account it aired in the early to mid 90s.

    • @tonyp9313
      @tonyp9313 2 роки тому

      @@benjaminschultz2582 Who cares about a national geographical survey. So you're saying 1/4 Americans which is 25% of people couldn't locate the Pacific Ocean & The Soviet Union? So doing math here that means 3/4 which is 75% of Americans can locate these things. This is very impressive to me that 75% knew where these things were considering this was early 90's no internet to look up things either. For the 25% who don't know that is a very small number. Geography you get that for like 2 years in high school. It's not a full 2 years either. You are not studying where these places are everyday either.

    • @benjaminschultz2582
      @benjaminschultz2582 2 роки тому +5

      @@tonyp9313 Extrapolate that 1/4 that didn't know basic geography and you have roughly the amount on both sides of the political spectrum who contribute to the hysterical politics of today. So in that context, 1/4 is a lot. But then, as I said, it was PARTIALLY in response. It's the little things that, when put together, make big things possible ... good or bad. And we're talking about education and engagement of kids here, not adults. As I said from my original comment, children's programming was the main premise. You had a comedy troupe, entertainment, fun, and education. They made learning about geography fun, not saying that folks would have perfect knowledge as a result of it.

    • @VoIcanoman
      @VoIcanoman Рік тому +2

      @@benjaminschultz2582 I agree with you. This was a legendary show, and nothing like it currently exists today (to the detriment of all). But I do think they made a couple errors in show design, most important of which was that the final "boss battle" to catch Carmen Sandiego was poorly-calibrated with respect to its difficulty (considering the ages of the contestants). 7 locations, 45 seconds. And it wasn't like after you got a place right, Greg would give you the next clue immediately - it took a couple seconds for it to happen, knocking the time down to an optimistic 35 seconds. 5 seconds per location. Even the contestants who knew all the places had a difficult time successfully navigating the UPSIDE-DOWN map (from the contestant's perspective, this was pretty disorientating) and getting it done in time (plenty of kids played the round perfectly, never slowing down or wasting time deliberating, but were just a second or so too late on the final marker, which would've been in the right place to win). And if they made even one error...they lost. Every time (even if their second guess was right).
      I watched this show religiously for two or three years in the '90s, and over all of those episodes (well over 100 of the 295 that were made), I think I saw maybe 10 people win. This could've just been because the cheap production studio didn't want to shell out what must have been up to $1,500 bucks total on airfare (they paid two airfares - the winner and a parent) that frequently. Nonetheless, it made watching the show quite frustrating at times.

    Very great nostalgic show, lots of memories... and I didn't even grow up in the US!
    Yeah I'm not sure if it's common knowledge but this show was adapted in a few different countries, including Italy (as "Che fine ha fatto Carmen Sandiego?") where I don't think the original computer game was even released so this was the only version we knew.
    It's pretty much identical with the same games, same graphics, same characters, there even is the same a cappella songs, although translated.
