Thank you so much for this, no wonder I couldn't figure it out on my own. Volkswagen deserve a slap in the face for this highly unintuitive solution.

12V Battery is charging while you charge the hi-voltage battery (when you plug it in). So it shouldn't be necessary to charge 12v battery sepparately, unless it is completely dead and doesn't react when you connect the charging cable

    • @BadmintonSkills

It seems that won't charge when you plug in. (12v battery not dead.)

So when the car says after 1 day of driving to "charge the 12V battery - run the engine" should I prep for a replacement? 6 years on it

I had to do this last weekend. Removing the battery was unnecessary in rerospect, this works without any danger.
I used a more expensive batttery charger/calibrator that helped balance the 12V Battery !
    Thank you for showing !!!

I am not sure what year your model GTE is from, in the manual for my 2021 model it's stated that charging the 12 v battery should only be done at a qualified VW service point, because the battery is a bit special. They don't go into details about what that is 🥺

Hello, I don't know much about 2021 but they should be great with 55KM autonomy .Mine is 2015 and probably with older battery technology.

Agree with Fred the MK8 could be radically different tech but I very much doubt I suspect under the skin the cars are the same. On various GTE forums people are charging them and resetting the OBD code all the time. From an engineering perspective I cannot see how charging an old tech 12V lead/acid battery can affect the electronics. The posts are also for convenience you can unscrew a few bolts on the cover in the boot and clip on directly anyway bypassing all electronics if indeed there are any. (your charger will ensure the battery isn't over charged ) - Looking at other EV forums 12V batteries playing up is quite a common theme on many hybrids - in fact on another brand sorry can't remember which one you have a charge 12v battery function you can activate manually - But back to the original point of course they say take it back to the dealer

      @snubbedpeer 3 роки тому +2

@@drivelifewellalltogetheror2081 I think that due to the start-stop mechanism for the engine the battery is no longer an old tech 12V lead/acid battery, it's connected somehow to the battery management system of the car in order to keep it charged. Supposedly you will get an error message if you try to fit an ordinary battery.

@@snubbedpeer could well be the case with the mk8 the mk7 is a standard lead acid - in addition in the U.K. the battery fitted on the Mk 7 is smaller than the bay was designed for - I was talking about charging though not replacing it - It might be lithium like motorbikes now which are indeed more tricky

@@snubbedpeer I belive the start stop operation is run by the main pack not this 12v as the car always starts in electric -

      Hello Mark
I also had this problem. VW could not find the error and they changed the car computer but the error was still there. GPS and all Hybrid modes stopped working. Finally after one month working on my car, they realised that they should reboot all the systems and cut off high voltage battery for five hours and after , everything get back to normal. Computer was cost about 3000 euros but they shouldn’t change it in first place!! They accepted all the cost as it was their mistake!!

@@1120Farhad Hello Sir, the car seems to have rectified itself yesterday. I tested it a few times and all seems well. No more error messages.
Overall I'm not convinced by this early vw hybrid technology. The estimated 30 miles on electric alone is a complete joke. I get about 20 on a very hot day. Now we're going into winter it'll be around 15 miles.
It's a 2016 plate but acts a bit temperamental in the start-up phase. Sometimes smooth, other times it takes a few pushes of the on/off button to get the car going.
      How's your electric range?

Do not do this! You require a charger with voltage regulation to avoid damage to the car electronics.
