    Very cool shop spaces! I’ve always been embarrassed to show my space to anyone as it’s a 2-car tandem garage which is plenty of space for a shop, but when you have this space that you always park two cars in, plus store everything you’ve accumulated over 20+ years, including garden items and my wife’s tons of Christmas and craft supplies, it’s a real challenge. I imagine there are a lot of guys in my position who might be interested in seeing how I make my space work for me. It’s clearly no longer a nice sparse garage as there is just about something everywhere you can put something, but it works. Everyone can make the space they have work for them, even if it’s outside or a room in an apartment, which I actually saw a guy do! Thanks for the shop tours!

    Contrary to popular preference, I far prefer to have all my tools in drawers and cupboards. That enables me to have a simple minimalist workspace that helps me keep the dust off all my tools and keeps the chaos and clutter at bay.

      100%. IMHO a little discipline goes a long way. I find drawers add efficiency by making me organize based on my workflow and it avoids the shop from being absolute chaos by the time the project is completed.

    I LOVE this!! I haven't been able to have a shop for a couple years and haven't been watching woodworking videos b/c the lack of actionable possibilties has made me quite sad. But living vicariously through others and letting my imagination run wild on what my shop could look like (at the next place I live) is invigorating! It fills me with so much hope and excitement. This video & reflection genuinely brought a tear to my eye because I'm realizing how much I've missed that part of my life.

    I enjoyed the shop tours!! It's always a pleasure to see how other talented people work out their limitations. I have a two car garage that is my metal working space and it also houses my 2000 Corvette. So it is very space limited like so many others. I also had my wood working machines in this garage and when I wanted to do metal or wood projects, I had to role out the saws and work benches and everything else that was in my way. Do my wood projects outside which usually wasn't too bad except on wet or hot days. I had a nice enclosed back porch on the back of the house and after some sweet talking, I got to turn it into my wood working porch shop.... (say that fast several times). Now I have filled up both places and wish I could expand both shops. What I would love to do is build a garage in my back yard to put my car in and that would help tremendously! For a while anyway...
    Maybe I should just move and start over....?

      Mine isn’t as cool as his, but I used lightweight plastic LED shoplights mounted to the back of the door. For power, I used an old drop light retracting cord reel, and removed the ratchet pawl so the cord is always under a little tension. The reel is at the far end of the door track, with an outlet box mounted to the top corner of the door that powers the shoplight as well as a fan.

    I live in an apartment with a sliding glass door that opens onto a step made from pressure-treated lumber, six feet of dirt, and a cinder block wall. (Basically the only reason I have any outdoor space at all is because of the mandatory setback from the commercial building next door.) So I built a deck, and put up a couple of rain shelters, and I store most of my tools in my bedroom closets. I should probably get around to making a quick tour video one of these days... :)

    There is a common feature across most woodworking community: the workshops in many ways look the same: busy and chaotic with stuff everywhere. For an activity that can produce a ton of dust the amount of dust gathering stuff exposed is mind blowing... then we have far too many in-builts and rigidity (cabinets) built into walls: extremely challenging if one wants to move out (of if one passes away then the relatives will have a very hard time cleaning it up...) with lots of wall furniture that likely won't fit in the new place... from all channels I know, taking in just small workshops, Hooked on Wood has got the best one. What we do is incredibly complicated and requires an unbelievable amount of stuff - needs to be practiced to be believed .... and it is not surprising to find so many workshops with stuff everywhere but I reckon we can do a lot better - rather than having stuff hanging on from everywhere (maybe with the exception of dust extraction / lifts hanging on from the ceiling) I reckon and favour a clean environment is way better: nobody needs hundred tools at the same time! The only things that really need to be on show (and on casters... or on benches) are the heavy tools but it turns out most people prefer to have the whole workshop content on show. They have my respect! I am just sad I can't show the way I do it. Maybe one day!

      For what it's worth, I agree with you, but keeping everything as clean as I'd like is a lot harder than it looks. I'm actively working on making more and better integrated storage so more of my tools have a place to "live."

    I think I recognize some of the items in Mike's shop as designs from Steve Ramsey (Wood Working for Mere Mortals) am I right?

      @FearsomeWarrior Місяць тому +2

      Totally are correct. I think Steve is the only pragmatic build video guy on the Tube that reached their audience. Many smaller but Steve had the time to refine and improve. Like how he looks old as hell in his old videos. Haha.

      I did too! It was that fold down workstation that made me do a double take first and then it was the drill/driver station and sanding station that had me like “ok he watches Steve”

    FYI, quite a few of the shop furniture in Mike Chipman's carport look like items from @SteveRamsey's "Weekend Workshop" course. There are a lot of great designs in there, especially for folks just getting started!

    • @chipmafia

    Brilliant to see that someone else has an outdoor shop. I wonder what kind of climate does he have there? I.e. is it dry around the year? How's the winters - snow and sleet or milder?
