Good video/review! My wife started hunting with me in 1983 with a Remington 600 Mohawk in .243. She did well with this rifle with deer and pronghorn. When going for elk a few years later, we moved her to my Winchester Model 70 featherweight in .30-06. This rifle was always just a bit too long and heavy for her to manage (but she got a few elk with it). A few years ago we went with the Ruger American Compact in .308 for her. Although the compact has a bit of a kick, she is much more comfortable with the length and weight. For the casual hunter, the Ruger American is great as far as we are concerned. Thanks for the video!
I agree with everything you said about this rifle, mine is with a green stock 6.5 creedmoor and a heavy barrel deadly accurate I'm loving it. Greetings from Canada
I had a savage axis in 308 Winchester and I didn't like it at all so I sold it and got me a ruger American in 308 and man what an improvement! The bolt is so much easier to take out and doesn't feel as sloppy as the savage.
Bought mine for $330 also in 270 win and put a vortex crossfire 4-12x40 for $120. It does exactly what I expect it to do for the price. It’s fun to shoot and it puts meat in the freezer. Excellent video!
My father handed me down tons of awesome shotguns since we live in Delaware its what you see here due to restrictions for hunting. Bought my Ruger American in .308 for 450$ it came with a factory mounted Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40. I have absolutely loved it since purchase. Been looking at places in PA to hunt with it or even find a range that's over 100 yards.
@@johnhartnett2229 Hey John, That's exactly why I am on her looking at this video. Been looking at that exact same rifle from Cabela's/Bass Pro Shops for $619 with that exact same Vortex Scope. How do you like it.? What's a thing or two that you don't like or change if you could. Appreciate any feedback.
@@ForzaJuve001 I have done a lot of shooting with that rifle for the last year and honestly the only downside I run into is being unable to feed a single round at a time. You have to use the magazine or they won't catch right. That's honestly the only downside I have found to the rifle
The trigger in fact is very easy to adjust, much easier than the Howa: remove stock, find the trigger spring, cut 3/4 of one coil of the spring and install and try for weight. I have mine at a fraction of one pound. The Howa is easy but far more fiddly to put back together.
Good review. I have a Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 with the AR-15 style of magazine well. It's very accurate and reliable. I did change out the stock with a Magpul Hunter stock. Great addition. Overall a great weapon. I did polish the bolt with a fine grit emery cloth. Took out the zipper sound and smoothed the action.
I’ve got one of these in 22-250. Had it for a few years now, and it does the job quite nicely. I filled the hollow buttstock with gap filler, and I filled the barrel channel with fibreglass resin, which took most of the flex out of the stock, but these 2 steps added a little bit of weight. Scope base and scope ring screws (both included in the rifle as packaged) used to come loose, but those issues have been solved with the addition of a Picatinny Rail, some quality rings and some 243 (blue) Loctite. This thing now shoots around 1/2 MOA with my home-loads.
@@dellme12 removed the recoil pad, and removed the piece of styrofoam that was in the empty hollow of the buttstock. I filled that void with the gap filler. Took about 1 and a half tubes. Just gives it a little bit of weight in the rear to balance it up.

Just picked up a Ruger American in 270 for the upcoming season. I have shot an American before that was easily an moa gun. Hopefully my new one in 270 will be the same. Good video!
I have two. One is the Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39 which also uses the same magazine as the Ruger Mini-30. I also have the Ruger American Predator in the 22-250. Both consistently get 1" or less groups @100 yds. The longest kill thus far was a coyote at approx. 250 yds. with the 22-250. As a side note, after purchasing the Predator, I ordered another magazine for it from Ruger. It failed consistently. After research, I found that it was not an uncommon problem and others had resolved it by purchasing the multi function magazine which is used for the .308, 6.5 Creedmore, 6mm Creedmore, .243 and the 7mm-08. I exchanged the 22-250 magaine I previously purchased and to get the new multi-function one and have had no problems with it.
I got the 5.56 Ranch version only because the Predator version is unavailable due to Covid here in Canada. I have only one complaint. This damn gun is a better shooter right out of the box than I will ever be. Sub 1 MOA. It has become every coyote's nightmare under 200 yards. I matched it up to a BSA Sweet 17 scope and I have not regretted it. Ruger has a winner with this model .
@@keithqueen352 The only rifle that I have that is equal for accuracy is the CZ455 17 HMR with the heavy barrel. I’m just glad I don’t have to carry it in the bush. My arms would be 2 inches longer by the end of the week. That’s my coyote sniper rifle.
I've had the ruger go wild in 300 for almost two years now. Enough time to get a good handload cooked up and see what its capable of. Did not like the muzzle brake ( blew snow in my face when prone) so I put a thread protector on it. It's easy minute of elk. I got my elk a few days ago with it and several deer so far. It looks like it will be a solid rifle and I'd recommend this rifle without hesitation
I owned a 6.5 Creedmor RUGER American Predator (heavier barrel) and I can say it is an excellent rifle FOR THE MONEY. Sub 1/2 MOA accuracy with Hornady ELD-M factory ammo!! Sub 3/4 MOA with ELD-X ammo! GREAT FEATURES: -> 1.) 3 lug bolt for fast manipulation and low scope clearance 2.) innovative two aluminum "Y"shaped bedding "pillar/base" action mounts 3.) outstanding cold hammer forged barrel with 5R rifling for less bullet deformation and better gas seal 4.) "decent" adjustable trigger. MY UPGRADES 1.) Timney trigger, Boyds' laminated stock, brown "Classic" model, SAVAGE aluminum trigger guard. Picked up 2 Ruger Americans 5 years ago....one in 30-06 and one in .308...each one was $199 on clearance......still haven't shot either one. Getting the 30-06 out and set up now...hopefully the accuracy was as good then as now when it was made.
I got my Ruger American 270 when it was on sale through turners and the day it arrived I went to pick it up and the guy asked if I knew how the gun worked (take magazine out put safety on etc) I said no even tho I did so he proceeded to show me. This dude goes to remove the magazine and it breaks on the spot. They ended up contacting Ruger and they got me a new magazine. This is just to say to carry at least 2 of these magazines if you guys end up buying one
I have a Ruger American in 308 win. After a couple of years of use the bolt has smoothed out and quieted down. I threw the stock away and put it in a Boyd’s At One.
The price has gone up to aprox. $600. I have the 450. I polished the zipper bolt in less than an hour by hand and with a polishing wheel. So much smoother.
I have one interesting observation about my Ruger American. I'm a gunsmith and can't leave a new rifle alone. I noticed the sear sticks out of the rear of the bolt as a silver tab. I noticed it dropped down slightly when I pulled the trigger before It went off. I re-cocked it. (all these movements were done with the gun unloaded.) I pressed down hard on this tab as far as it would go. When I pulled the trigger it felt much lighter and more crisp. I thought it was a flaw but I couldn't get it to fire no matter how hard I pushed down on the sear tab. I wonder if you have noticed this little feature. It acts like a preset.
I just bought a ruger american combo with vortex on top. The selling point on my rifle was how crisp the trigger was. Mine has zero creep and a crisp break with no over travel. Maybe I just got lucky?
Ive got 2 predators one in 6.5creedmoor AI mag and a 223 AR mag. Both are good rifles but ive put the creedmoor in a magpul Hunter stock and ive put a Jard trigger in my 223. The barrel gets hot fast after 5 shots lol
i got one in22 250 for a bargain i only wish it was in 243. i believe the most under rated cartridge ever. 243 is a BEAST. good luck with your hunts brudda
Best thing to do with stock if not going to change it to a wooden stock is to remove the pad and fill it full of pure clear silicone It really reduced the recoil and calmed it down
I agree its kinda like a cheaped up American version of a tikka in a way. Ive actually thought that myself. If they would just put a better stock on it, and offer in stainless again, that would be nice.
would lightly polishing the bolt help quiet the zipper sound? Would that introduce any problems? Would an aftermarket bolt provide quieter performance?
Would go with the one that takes the AICS type magazine. More options for the capacity. Had mine in 6.5mm creedmoor for 3 deer seasons now. Hornady eld-x 143 gr has given me one shot stops on whitetail deer from 25- 318 yards. Hell on yotes as well. I have beat the ever loving shit out of it and the vortex crossfire ii bdc reticle scope that came with it , no loss of zero .
@@reggienorman7253 sighted in at 100 yards. Used the 3rd line , ( 2nd below true center of crosshair) . I did practice some shots at 300, found it to be good to go before using it on deer .
I've hunted with a Ruger American in 270 Winchester and a week later I hunted with a Remington 783 in 270 as well. And in my personal opinion, I don't like the Ruger's magazine. I constantly had feeding issues with the magazine. The 783 has a better magazine as it is easier and faster to put some rounds into it and I've never had a failure to feed. But when it comes to accuracy, they were both shooting about the same.
@@Bullets4Bucks that's great. Heard lots of complaints about them, not sure if it was caliber specific? Guy that hunts with me wants one, and heard the same thing, lots of the rotary magazines style ones in stores around here. Maybe was an early version issue? Not sure. But thanks for the info. Either way great rifles for the money
Great review as usual. Would you say that the Ruger American barrel and action and trigger would be worth removing and putting in some kind of a chassis for long-term use?
@@Bullets4Bucks would better be something like the savage 110 ultralite with the proof research carbon fiber wrapped barrel specifically their action-barrel-trigger?
I have a RAP in 22-250 and personally enjoy the fact that it’s lite weight as I trek a lot of miles on a hunt ! I wouldn’t think of filling the stock with JB Weld , or changing to a Magpul or Boyd’s stock unless I was just planning on stand hunting or bench shooting !
I just bought a ruger American ranch rifle today in 350 legend. I've been wanting one of these for awhile and I think it's an excellent rifle. I just bought 2.5 acres loaded with deer and hope to fill my freezer full of deer meat in the next year.
My Savage lightweight 223 is the only rifle that comes close to my R american 243 and at half the money. As a rule i am not fond of Ruger. Mine is a left hand compact. Ruger compact left hand sold completely out and Ruger didn"t have enough sense to make more To be honest , this rifle shocked me. Try to find a Ruger American compact left hand anywhere in the WORLD...You Won"t >>
I have been eyeballing the Predator version of the American rifle in .308 for a while. Just can't find it at an acceptable price right now. But eventually it will come home.
yeh this is crazy times these rifles keep going up like this and Bullets For Bucks will have to make a new video in 6 months callled best introduction rifle under $600.
I feel after handling many rifles, the Ruger A and the T/C venture are probably the cheapest you can go and still have a rifle worth having. The HOWA/Vanguard is a step above them. If selling at comparable price Id definitle go Howa/Vanguard over both. Depends on the deal. For example for a short time I saw a deal on a howa stainless 30-06 @ $450(sold out quick). Why buy a Ruger A at $450 range if you can get the Howa for similar money when the deal is there? Im not as much of a fan of the T/C compass, Savage Axis, or Ruger 783. The newer Axis stock feel better than the 1st though.
Nice video but I honestly would not trade any of my Axis rifles for it even the cheapest one. They all shoot good; the triggers are much lighter even on the cheapest ones after my trigger jobs. I don't like that noisy bolt on the Ruger or the cheap plastic cap on the bolt assembly and even the stock has more flex in it than the Savage. My last Savage has the new adjustable stock and that is even much better. I do believe my 270 I bought with the newer stock even has a 24-inch barrel which is really the minimum barrel length you want for anything based on a 30-06 case. 22 inches is really the minimum you want on anything based off a 308 case. Anything less you sacrifice a lot of velocity. I have a lot of guns. You can't beat Savage for accuracy in most everything they make. I have some tight shooting Remington Sendero's, I have had some more expensive Ruger rifles that were prettier and better machined but none of them shot any better than the Savages I have. In fact, I either sold them or traded them for a Savage Axis II. The Ruger's I had were model 77's not the cheap Ruger Americans. I didn't regret the trade down in value on the Ruger 77 for the Savage Axis II either.
I just bought one today in Copper Mica finish, 30-06 chambered. Seems like the Copper Mica is hard to find info on. Does anyone know if it was a limited run?
Hey guys, I just got this in 308 and am only hitting 2 MOA using Barnaul surplus ammo. In your experience, what ammo brand or weight has gotten you better performance than this? Thanks!
For a budget rifle Ruger still on the top list, especially it can share AR mags in 223 and it has 7.62x39 caliber. But in 308 or 6.5cm I d better buy a Bergara.
It looks like the magazine holds 4 bullets. Are larger capicity magazines legal and available? Say I want to buy a 10 bullet+ magazine; are they legal and available? Thanks
Legally it depends on the state. I don't think their are high capacity mags available for the regular ruger american but for the ruger american predator and precision there are.
Paul-I am really not trying to troll here, but if you hunt and have to get to bullet number 5 your game is either deaf/blind or you need to spend more time at the range.
Take it from experience!!! Spend the little extra!! And get a Tikka T3,,everything is better on the Tikka,,,The action,,clip release feels better in your hand..I have 3 Tikkas and 1 Ruger American..I am very sorry that I got this Ruger American,,I am going to try and trade it off..

Ive got 2 predators one in 6.5creedmoor AI mag and a 223 AR mag. Both are good rifles but ive put the creedmoor in a magpul Hunter stock and ive put a Jard trigger in my 223. The barrel gets hot fast after 5 shots lol
Very cool
I have this in a 243. My buck jumped 10 yards and fell dead. Couldn't ask for better. My scope is a Nikon BDC 4x12.
Nice 👌
i got one in22 250 for a bargain i only wish it was in 243. i believe the most under rated cartridge ever. 243 is a BEAST. good luck with your hunts brudda
American ruger rifles have a good reputation for good rifles in affordable prices. Put a good scope on that rifle and you have a solid set up
Yes they do
Can get a lighter spring at Old Beaver gun shot. Will adjust to 1.5 to two pounds
Best thing to do with stock if not going to change it to a wooden stock is to remove the pad and fill it full of pure clear silicone It really reduced the recoil and calmed it down
Or buy a better gun
@@Bullets4Bucks reason I bought a Bergara B14 timber 6.5 creedmore. lol
I love mine and has put a lot of meat in the freezer. Mine is in 30-06 and have owned it for about 8 years.
Awesome they are great budget rifles
@@Bullets4Bucks I have tried several different factory ammo through it but it likes Hornady Superformance 150g. I wonder what everyone else is using?
Are there other ( aftermarket ) magazines that can be bought ? And where can one find them ? ... Great vid.. thanks.
Not for all models. I believe for the predator and rancher there are.
The poor mans Tikka. I've got one in 243, very accurate...
Yes
I had the Ruger and after selling it wound up with a Tikka. lol
@@219garry I will keep my Ruger, but thinking about a Tikka either Lite or Super Lite. Once Trump is reelected and prices get back to normal...
@@johnganshow5536 Seems like a long shot at this point tho.
I agree its kinda like a cheaped up American version of a tikka in a way. Ive actually thought that myself. If they would just put a better stock on it, and offer in stainless again, that would be nice.
Good looking gun
Thanks
On these if you leave the trigger at around 3.5 pounds it breaks clean, which I prefer to having the weight slightly lower, with creep.
Interesting
would lightly polishing the bolt help quiet the zipper sound? Would that introduce any problems? Would an aftermarket bolt provide quieter performance?
It would help. Polishing the inside of the receiver would help also.
Today i bought my first rifle in australia and it 270 rugger American for $1070 with scope
They have upgraded the magazines and they work a bit better. I couldn't put a fully loaded old version magazine in my gun with the bolt closed
Awesome
Would go with the one that takes the AICS type magazine. More options for the capacity. Had mine in 6.5mm creedmoor for 3 deer seasons now. Hornady eld-x 143 gr has given me one shot stops on whitetail deer from 25- 318 yards. Hell on yotes as well. I have beat the ever loving shit out of it and the vortex crossfire ii bdc reticle scope that came with it , no loss of zero .
What yardage did you sight it in at? What setting do you hold on for 300 yards?
@@reggienorman7253 sighted in at 100 yards. Used the 3rd line , ( 2nd below true center of crosshair) . I did practice some shots at 300, found it to be good to go before using it on deer .
@@redneckninja2539 thank you for the information and your quick reply. I appreciate it. Good luck to you buddy.
Had someone offer me a Ruger American in 30-06 with a Vortex Crossfire II 6-24x50 for my Chinese SKS. Having a hard time deciding
Mine feeds great.
Do you have the rotary magazines? Heard they have issues. Mine is the AICS magazine type. No issues
@@redneckninja2539 mine is rotary and its been great
@@Bullets4Bucks that's great.
If you do not have money for better yes
@@Bullets4Bucks would better be something like the savage 110 ultralite with the proof research carbon fiber wrapped barrel specifically their action-barrel-trigger?
Probably
I have a RAP in 22-250 and personally enjoy the fact that it’s lite weight as I trek a lot of miles on a hunt ! I wouldn’t think of filling the stock with JB Weld , or changing to a Magpul or Boyd’s stock unless I was just planning on stand hunting or bench shooting !
I love mine. I’ve owned, 3. Your comments are accurate.
wow 3! I only have this one right now
I just bought a ruger American ranch rifle today in 350 legend. I've been wanting one of these for awhile and I think it's an excellent rifle. I just bought 2.5 acres loaded with deer and hope to fill my freezer full of deer meat in the next year.
It will do the job great
Love mine! 1 to 1 \14 inch groups and hits hard! Good luck! Cheer's
My 308 American is on target every time 1 inch to 1.350 groups at 100 yards.
Nice!
Could you emory cloth the extractor to eliminate that zipper noise ? Also, would polishing the trigger help eliminate that gritty feel ?
Yes
My Savage lightweight 223 is the only rifle that comes close to my R american 243 and at half the money. As a rule i am not fond of Ruger. Mine is a left hand compact. Ruger compact left hand sold completely out and Ruger didn"t have enough sense to make more To be honest , this rifle shocked me. Try to find a Ruger American compact left hand anywhere in the WORLD...You Won"t >>
I have been eyeballing the Predator version of the American rifle in .308 for a while. Just can't find it at an acceptable price right now. But eventually it will come home.
Its a good budget rifle forsure
yeh this is crazy times these rifles keep going up like this and Bullets For Bucks will have to make a new video in 6 months callled best introduction rifle under $600.
My $325 30.06 Ruger American shoots 0.5 MOA all day long. It likes most Federal branded ammo (especially 180gr Field Trophy Copper)
Good shooting
@@Bullets4Bucks Have you tried its 6.5mm Creedmoor version? Accurate as Howa 1500?
@@jn3750 i have not tested the 6.5 only shot my buddies both very accurate but build quality better on howa if ya ask me
How large of magazines can you find for this gun

Ruger American Predator Camo in 300 Win Mag and threaded barrel.
Leupold scope on it.
awesome
Great information
get a macarbo triger kit
Seiko -- SAY-ko is a watchmaker.
Sako --- SOCK-O is a rifle maker.
If you like it and works than its good for you.
Is the weaver mount that comes with the Ruger American steel or aluminum?
I actually cannot remember
@@Bullets4Bucks ☹
I just bought one today in Copper Mica finish, 30-06 chambered. Seems like the Copper Mica is hard to find info on. Does anyone know if it was a limited run?
It was limited
My first time to be so interested in Ruger but I'm looking for 24 inch barrel does Ruger have them?
The ruger precision rifle in 6.5 creedmoor is 24 inches not sure of any others
Hey guys, I just got this in 308 and am only hitting 2 MOA using Barnaul surplus ammo. In your experience, what ammo brand or weight has gotten you better performance than this? Thanks!
Federal gold medal match 168 gr
I have 308 Predator. It shoots Barnes, all Federal, and Sellior & Bellot well.
@@Bullets4Bucks Appreciated
Paul-I am really not trying to troll here, but if you hunt and have to get to bullet number 5 your game is either deaf/blind or you need to spend more time at the range.
Enjoyed ya video. But Willie Nelson mounted that scope. It’s high.
lol
Take it from experience!!! Spend the little extra!! And get a Tikka T3,,everything is better on the Tikka,,,The action,,clip release feels better in your hand..I have 3 Tikkas and 1 Ruger American..I am very sorry that I got this Ruger American,,I am going to try and trade it off..
Does the zipper sound get worse with use?
No it goes away some
Have several Ruger American/Ranch rifles. Unbelievable trigger for the price. Bolt smooths out very quickly with use. Bought one for my wife just for the "cock indicator", cant hurt.
Very good
Which stock is that? or what paint did you use?
It was a limited edition color.
