Very cool! From a production point of view, I wonder if they ever thought of any way for it to move around, without using wires? The caster wheels would be very challenging to make a version that actually moves.

I've wondered about that as well. It would have taken no less than 3-4 people to operate Rover. One on each side of him to pull the wires in opposite directions to make him turn the way he did or move in a straight line. 4 wheels would have made him more stable when turning as well. It was probably too late to change his design once he made his initial appearance so they had to work with what they designed. I wish there was some behind the scenes footage of the prop people operating him!

@@outsider238 I'm shocked there are no scenes where they just pushed him through the shot. He must have been super unstable. I think you are right about being too late to change the design. I'm sure until they got some letters about him, no one gave it a second thought, then they had to add him in more and more. LOL

I did a build for my collection of motorized casters. Here is a link to the version of Rover.

@@kelvington4182 He actually is rather unstable because of his 3 wheeled design. When I tried to make him turn, he would tend to want to fall over so there has to be equal pull from the back side to make him turn 180 degrees. Something I'm sure the Rover handlers found out as well. I was surprised to find out that when I pulled him forward, he tended to have his back end veer to one side or the other so another operator has to be pulling on a wire connected to his rear to keep him straight. It must have taken them a long time to set up any shot where Rover scooted along.

I GUESS YOU AREN'T SELLING THIS AS A KIT, LOVE TO HAVE ONE.

These were both built by John from the Robothut UA-cam channel. They weren't kits. You could ask him to print the parts for you and you could build Rover for yourself if you'd like. He might even have the files available somewhere. The link to his channel is in the description.

If only some more time had been spent on post-processing this to remove the obvious 3D printing things like layer lines this could have been great.

I'm fine with the lines. This was a lot of work to make just as it is. John had to do the modeling and 3D CAD work on all the crazy angles that Rover has. Then the designing of the interior workings of the motors housings and then all the lighting. Plus all the materials used like metal tubing, original ball casters, metal rods, acrylic cylinder and sheet. Considering no one has made a Rover replica before and that John had never even seen the show, I'm amazed he was able to create this as incredible as he did.

Ask John from the Robothut UA-cam channel. He's the one that built them. The link is in the description. I'm not sure what paint he used.
