I saw my first ever owl species a few days ago! A tawny owl! And yes i SAW it. Usually you hear owls only but I decided to get my flashlight and go search for it in the middle of the dark night
Congrats on the owl! That's amazing! What an awesome experience that must of been!
It seems you brought the monsoon weather back to Utah😉 & you jinxed Utah when you said we never get rain storms like that. Sorry you didn't catch any of the 25 lifers on your trip but it looks like you still had a great time. I really enjoy your vids!
That's true! I got home and it was thunderstorming everywhere haha. Thanks for watching the videos, it means a lot!
Also, have you ever been to California ? If and whenever you get the chance, do go to California and drive up and down the coastline to see shorebirds all the way from Sausalito to Monterey. There you will also see Harbour Seals, California Marine Otters, California Sea Lions, Elephant Seals and a host off other local California birds as well. You should also visit Mountain View Shoreline Park as there are teaming with birds anytime of the year.
Yep I have a lot of videos in California. But I haven't been to that part of the state yet so I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
8:42 yes i feel that too, most birds have stopped calling and displaying and stuff and nesting is over. But when it’s Winter again we get to see some cool species here in the Netherlands
I love winter here in the US because the ducks come back in full force! Birding has such awesome stages, it's always so exciting!
So sorry Canada didn't give you a fair shot on your first birding trip here!! It obviously means you need to come bird more places across the country!
Yes! Next stop Saskatchewan!
@@brighteyedbirding i'll do everything in my power to get south and meet up if you do! Or maybe i need to get my passport renewed and head to Utah!
You should come to HONG KONG 🇭🇰 SAR, and visit places like : Hong Kong Botanical and Zoological Gardens, Kowloon Park, rural parks in the New Territories, nature walks, local park, ocean view promenades, etc. etc and be able to see Hong Kong 🇭🇰 local endemic birds as well as migratory birds. You must visit the Mai Po Nature Reserve but you need to obtain group-tour permit as you cannot visit alone. But, anyway, do visit Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR.
Birding in Hong Kong would be a dream! Hopefully someday I will be able to do so!
As a recent PhD I know what it's like to travel for conferences so I'm glad that part of your trip went well. Disappointed for you that the birding fell through, though. Hopefully you're able to get out to the east coast soon 🌈.
You're one of the best birding channels around and I appreciate the consistency and work you put in to give us a great product.
They can be stressful for sure! Especially if you fly haha. Oh, I'll definitely get out to the East coast to redeem those beautiful Eastern birds!
Thanks so much for saying that! I really appreciate your kind words and they motivate me to keep going! Thanks for watching!
You have very good engagement questions! Turns out my longest lifer drought was only about 2.5 months and I just broke it a couple weeks ago. Since I started "seriously" birding a couple years ago I seem to average a new species roughly every 4-6 weeks.
Congratulations on a successful conference! Looking forward to seeing the work you've been doing; I'd love to see a video about it. I think UA-cam could always use some more relatable and engaging personalities talking about their academic work! I'm starting my master's this year so I'll be on the conference circuit soon; definitely excited to get a chance to travel and carve out time to see the birdlife in whatever cities I happen to end up going to - possibly more than the actual conferences themselves... 'XD
The northeast summer rainstorms are no joke here! This summer we've pretty much been ducking rain every weekend afternoon like clockwork. Also, I live in cardinal territory and have only taken two blurry photos of them, so you're good there.
Thanks! That's awesome, and congrats on breaking that 2.5 week drought!
I probably will make a video about it at some point! Thanks for expressing your interest! There are so many opportunities to find birds at conferences. I just wish there was even more time.
It's incredible how much rain you all get in one storm. Occassionally we will have downpours here in Utah, but it only lasts a small bit. Thanks for watching!
That was great footage of the northern cardinal. I have lots of them coming to my feeder.
Thanks! I am jealous that they are backyard birds out East and we don't have them here haha.
My last Lifer was a Siberian Accentor in WA state, Feb. 2020. # 703 for US.
Oh wow that's amazing because you've basically seen everything at this point!
Singapore 🇸🇬 and Malaysia 🇲🇾 should also be on your itinerary 😉
Bummer on the first Canada trip not yielding exactly what you hoped for but that’s birding sometimes. Hopefully next time is even better!
Indeed! Just an excuse to run it back!
Can you give the link to your presentation on birders? I assume it is published.
I would like to read that too.
It was a research in progress presentation, but it should be published in the next few months. I'll put it out for you all when it's done soon! Thanks for asking!
What are you doing your PhD in ? Sociology? Psychology?
@@frednorman1 It's in Sociology yes!
Congrats on your presentation. I'll want to read that when it's ready!
Thank you!! That's awesome! I'll put out a link when it's all finished and ready to go!
Dude. Come to Brasil!! If you in Rio I can guide you some nice birding spots
I would love to go to Brasil! Maybe one day the channel will get me there!
Awesome share
Thanks for watching!
Sorry the Montreal birding wasn’t so great, it’s always hit or miss trying to fit in birding on a work trip. I’m still waiting to get my first lifer shown on my channel.
Yeah, work trips are definitely work. I thought I'd have more time, but I'll be more prepared for the future!
Any suggestions on birding in Utah, since you live there? I’m going there for a weekend in mid September. I’m spending some time in Springville, but other than that I don’t have definite plans. I have to look at a map to even know where Springville is in the state.
Absolutely! You need to check out Antelope Island! The Burrowing Owls might still be around if you are lucky!
Farmington Bay is also a really good place to get a good checklist of birds on as well as Lee Kay Ponds (mostly for shorebirds, waterfowl, etc).
If you have any particular targets let me know and I can be more specific on where to find them!
Interesting topic for your research paper! According to your research, what’s the average age of birders?
Thank you!! From what we can see the average age of birders falls somewhere above 55+ years old. But compared to previous years, more young birders are joining the hobby!
That’ s birding young man😵💫
It’s not for everyone.
Very true!
