I had to use my travel insurance on a European trip (not a cruise) in 2022. Since we were with a tour company, I foolishly bought my insurance from the company they recommended. We both tested positive for COVID the night before we were to fly home. We were quarantined in Belgium for 10 days. While the insurance did eventually reimburse us for the extra $5,000 in expenses, it took EIGHT MONTHS & reporting them to the Better Business Bureau before they finally paid us. That company was AON. I discovered that the cruise line I'm booked with for next year uses that same company. Needless to say, I bought from an outside company. I will never deal with AON again.

Don’t forget the necessary documentation from the cruise ship; like documenting a quarantine. Also get all medical records and invoices from SSC hip with the official cruise company stamp on it

Quite frankly, the main reason I get travel insurance is for the medical coverage. I always wondered if it was worth it and if they would come through until my wife recently broke her leg severely in Europe. They came through with flying colors, got us out of a deplorable public hospital into a private one and then flew us home in business class. After 14 days in two hospitals, I haven't been asked for a penny. For cruises, we drive to the port and losing a cruise fare alone wouldn't bankrupt us.

The cost of the cruise alone may not be an issue for you, but medical transport from out to sea can cost tens of thousands of dollars. I'd still get the insurance.

Great video, one of the challenges in the travel insurance universe is coverage for individuals older than 65. I buy an annual policy from Alliance and I select higher limits since I like to go on long trips to the far east and Europe. The challenge is there are not many companies that apparently offer this type of coverage and it is expensive. My observation is that nationwide which used to be my go to company when I was younger will not ensure individuals older than 65 and if they do, it’s only secondary coverage meaning you should have a separate policy as the primary. To me it makes no sense as you state in the video US based health insurance is not accepted in other parts of the world. Can you share your thoughts on this issue and possibly consider doing a video for annual travel insurance specifically for individuals older than 65? Thank you

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I think I might do another video about annual travel insurance if this one keeps doing well. It’s something I just discovered myself, and there doesn’t seem to be alot of non-sponsored videos about it right now.
Regarding secondary coverage - I ran into that with one of my policies, too. My understanding is that it just means the travel insurance pays out after any other policy in place, but if there is no policy in place then the travel insurance still works. Actually, GeoBlue has a medical-only travel insurance where that works in your benefit, if you can prove you have a US domestic health insurance plan, they will charge you a lower premium for their international health insurance. But that plan doesn’t cover any trip cancellation or loss baggage.

Thank you for the video. Good job but with some misinformation. The State Department does not regulate Travel Insurance. It is largely unregulated. Many health insurance plans cover you for foreign and cruise health issues. For example, Kaiser Permanente covers any trips. (Most travel insurance is "secondary" and relies on this fact) Medicare does not cover foreign travel though. Medivac emergency flight is free. The helicopter rescue type teams will be government fire department type employees. They don't charge. Cruise ships are not going to allow some private for-profit rescue company to land their helicopter on their ship, even if they did exist.
There is a reason the travel insurance industry is so profitable. As you mentioned, they have so many loopholes they set up for themselves where they won't pay. For example, the "unlawful act" loophole you mentioned could be as simple as tripping while "J walking". Pre-existing conditions are typically not covered and that is going to be your most common reason for having to cancel your trip. After 30 plus cruises, I've never made a claim and because I am medically covered, it just doesn't make much economic sense to buy insurance anymore. Although I am thinking of annual insurance, mostly just for peace of mind.

Thanks for the correction - you’re right, I just learned that the US Coast Guard does indeed foot the bill for a helicopter medivac. But that only gets you to the nearest land-based hospital, there might still be medical transportation needed to get you to better facilities.
I will say that I worked in insurance for a few years, there is indeed some regulations by state although whether there are enough is debatable!

I just recently (this year) starting traveling more than 1 x a year, and my first cruise ever. So first , i got travel insurance through the cruise line (after it was too late to cancel it) . then I saw a video and a post that said that there was other types of insurance. I was looking at multiple types of insurance and I thought I clicked on the one I wanted. I DIDN'T . I got another one for JUST THE CRUISE- Don't ask me how! again. can't get my money back. Then- I finally got the one I needed - annual travel insurance that covered everything except cancelled excursions/missed ports. So from now on- i will renew this for next year -as we are going on at least one cruise and probably 2 road trips.

Wow, yeah, I can relate to that! I actually did the same thing once but I noticed within the 10-day period so I was able to cancel and get the correct insurance.
