- A brief table top review and range time with a black powder single shot derringer. It proved to be more fun to shoot than I expected. and my shots were not as wild as first thought
One chance still beats the heck out of a large stick or pepper spray. For anyone that cannot purchase a modern firearm legally. I would definitely look into black powder weapons. This was how the west was won. You can't argue with that.
well, you can't argue with any 44 Muzzle.
I can kick myself in the head for not buying one of those kits around 1985 - it was around $29 at Service Merchandise.
+Alexandru Popa (AlTheMindTraveler) knew they were not costly, but had no idea they were that low. Thanks for adding to the discussion.
I remember in the early 80s in Houston Service Merchandise had Black Powder revolvers for $89.00.
I wish I had bought one then.
Man Inflation sucks!
Especially if your young like me, you get jealous of people buying stuff for cheap back in their days! 😂
@@banjoplayingbison2275 But back then it wasn't cheap. They said the same thing about people buying M1 Carbines for $90 back in the 1960's.
I remember back in the late 70s you could buy those kits for about $20.
This gun has a 2 inch barrel. The next one up in the CVA line was the CVA Colonial Pistol with a 6 3/4 inch barrel it would hold 40 grains of FFFg powder and push a 130 grain .440 round ball out the muzzle at 1017 FPS. That's 38 special territory. Not bad.

Neat little gun. Most of the decent Philadelphia Derringer kits now days cost several hundred dollars. It's hard to justify those kinds of prices on a kit when I can get a Pietta cap and ball revolver for a little over $200 on sale. And with the revolver I don't have to do any fitting or building. Still, I'd love to get one of these for my collection. I just recently started in black powder as well and they are a lot of fun to shoot.
I agree it’s always good to buy one of these black powder guns. Can stockpile a couple hundred rounds fairly cheap.
NOTICE - IMPORTANT I just acquired one of these and did my usual tear-down and inspection before firing a used weapon. The locking lug under the barrel was drilled very low and recoil had distorted the lug under the pin . There was spreading and a slight curve to the bottom of the lug where the pin was starting to tear through. The barrel was tight on the stock and there was no external evidence of a problem. I strongly suggest owners check for this before firing a CVA derringer with a cylindrical barrel lug pin. Mine is still safe for a while, assuming low charges, but yours may be ready to fly back in your face or just fine. YOU NEED TO KNOW.
1. make sure weapon is not loaded and put on half-cock
2. remove through screw and side lock screws and pull the lock
3. drive out pin with a drift - it should move easily - if not it may be distorted (mine was)
4. remove rear barrel tang screw and lift off barrel - again, it should come off easily - if it doesn't the lug may have spread and created burrs on the sides of the lug.
While you're working on it anyway, you may want to remove the trigger guard and trigger plate to check the brass bearing surface of the trigger extension. it bears on a steel extension of the sear and mine was pretty rough.
Good shooting

I bought one of these by mail order back in '74 or '75. I was 11 or 12. My brother helped me put it together. Never been fired. I'm going to change that soon. Local gun shop owner looked it over and said it should be good. Thanks for the video.
a slow reload is why you carry a big knife too.
Dang, that thing shoots closer to point of aim than some of the bigger Pietta and Uberti Navy and Army revolvers I've shot!
Troublemtn, thanks for your input. I want to get a rifle in a kit now, and try my hand at building and shooting it too.
Funnily enough, my dad has one of these hanging around somewhere. Just bought an old CVA Vest Pocket Derringer kit with him earlier this week, it'll be fun to put together. He said he bought his old Philadelphia kit for somewhere around sixty bucks at the time, would've been near 1985.
Back in 76 or 77 $20 was money. Today it isn`t even the sales tax.
Jon, where can I find a kit to build one that looks like the one used to assassinate Lincoln?
DMONICUS6 Troll
I used to be a big fan of CVA. There quality was good. Then I gut a kit that was horrible. It was the New Orleans Ace. Although I hear they improved a lot I have not did not do any of there kits since then.
Round for round, BP muzzleloading is loads more fun than cartridge guns! And much cheaper! A couple of hours on the range with a modern gun, you might go through 250 rounds easy, but with a front stuffing smokepole you might only shoot a 10th as many bullets and have just as much fun, if not more!
Cool and beautiful little gun, what do you use to seat the patch and ball ...?
I used a starter rod, which is only about 4 inches long , but enough for this barrel
hab mir nen speziellen starter gebaut , dient gleich als ladestock ,
damit ich die kugel nicht zu tief setze .
I've built a special starter, serves as a ramrod ,
so I do not put the ball too low)
That's about derringer accuracy alright. Jeff Cooper famously said, " Derringers do nothing well; shun them."
Back in the day you could buy one of these kits for about $40.00! Wish I would have bought one buy it's much too late now, anyway black powder guns are great fun to load and shoot. Thanks for sharing.
Robert Brunston : If you are still interested in a Philly deringer, then look up on web, a company by the name of "Deer Creek " in Indiana, USA. They have a really nice kit of the Philly deringer. Got one about 6 months ago for I think of $115. Not bad for inflation.
Sixgun, I plan to look at another BP firearm, perhaps a caplock long gun , before I step up to a flintlock. But a flintlock would certainly be great prepper firearm.
Hello Pal! I'm from Bavaria (Southern Germany). Dikar is now Ardesa - since a few years.
I bought the Ardesa Derringer Philadelphia, which is exactly like this one.
Now my question:Can you tell me how long can I have this weapon loaded with Black Powder, felt und of course the Lead Ball with being able to ahoot it before it gets wet/rusty and unusable?
Please help me!
Thank you very much!
Cheers!
Yes, measured by volume, but I used a scale to get a starting load of around 20 grains, in a lee dipper. Thanks for watching
Yes, I remember that, minimum wage was $2.35, and gas was around $0.49 a gallon.
rls303, this was a lot more fun that I expected.
Black powder firearms are addictive
im not trying to be insulting, but it cracks me up when people say “this is a fun gun to shoot”. THEYRE ALL FUN TO SHOOT!!!!!
from 22cb to 16”/50cal mk7, there aint a sucky one out there!!
Jon-Looks like a real blast - What kind of BP did you use? Did you use premeasured charges? Patched ball? What did you ram the ball with? We want to see more of that rascal--Nice video liked it
Sixgun, yes I plan to work with this some more and should get better groups. Thanks , Jon
Jon, you have a flinch, master that and accuracy will improve.
Just got one for $40. Looks brand new.
Oh wow! When I was about 19 I bought this exact CVA Philadelphia Derringer Kit.
I used Linseed oil to finish the wood stock and it looked great. I remember I was
never going to be able to fire it because the hammer was offset from the nipple
that would have held the percussion cap.
I was told the only way to fix it would be to heat the hammer up red hot then bend it
to a correct position. Never fixed it. I gave it away when I enlisted in the US Army
at 21 and I got to shoot real guns haha.
Jon-Thanks - as you can see, you've hit an interest vein in many shooters with this, we're on the edge of our seat waiting for your video...
Great video, beautiful gun. Blackpowder is so much fun and very relaxing. I have a Confederate Navy Colt reproduction and a Thompson Center Hawkin in 50 caliber. I want to get the Trapper percussion pistol in 50 caliber. That is one cool Derringer.
Looks like a handful of fun right there!! Excellent video!! ;-)
Is it bad if the first thought that went to my head was:
"This would be a great assassination gun"
Because its affordable, only requires one shot, doesnt require a license, and isnt traceable.
To be fair, the gun it's based on is infamous for that very purpose.
@@williamblazkowicz5587 FWIW The state of IL (who puts "Land of Lincoln" on their license plates) now considers black powder and even some air guns firearms and requires a background check and waiting period.
Either they are still mad about what happened to their railroad lawyer or are planning to do somthing they know might get them shot.
i beleave he was shot with a 31 cal .the real derringer was spelled with one r deringer because of the paton .it is a very nice video i thank you for sharing it just thought would like to hear the history on it
I wonder what max range is ?
...guns liek this are the only ones a german could get without tons of paperwork, sweat and money, a lot of money.
mtslyh...another viewer said these kits sold for $20 in the 70's, so I can believe those current prices. I have also eyed those Pietta BP revolvers too, and they look cool. Stay tuned for more on this type stuff. Jon
How does it work thanks 👍😁
FC45LC, I used fffg and measured it with a lee dipper and scale, patched round ball and used a shotgun cleaning rod for a ram. All kind of crude, but was effective. Your request for more video is now on my list of to do.
I wouldn't want to get hit with it
Yes mckwilly, I want to make one now too. This was was put together by my Dad, I just blued barrel and then took it to the range.
How much is this gun worth?
Wow, $20 is low, that would make it good to have several, and not have to reload. lol
Nice Derringer thanks 4 the share!
kabaruser, it was easier to keep on paper than I first imagined. Thanks for watching.
Wait first you said it was a 45 then when you were fireing it you said it was a 44 which is it
Not bad accuracy, probably would've hurt.
Huge delay between cap strike and firing on the first shot. Is that normal? The other two are practically instantaneous.
doggonemess I think first shot still had some oil in lockwork, possibly causing delay.
I guess I will have to do a follow up video. It's on my list now buddy.
OK, I will do a follow up video too. Thanks for watching.
1985 hab ich mir nen spanischen bausatz bestellt .
war prima ) hat damals um 50 mark gekostet .
schiesst prächtig und macht spass :-)
So beautiful gun
Hi Jon, your pistol looks similar to the pair of pistols I bought in a presentation box, the only identification that's on the pistols is on the plate, it reads derringer/Philadelphia, no other marking are visable, no serial numbers or numbers of any kind are visable, also my pistols don't have any sights, I read, that chances are, guns withought serial numbers are ept to be original, and not copies, is this true, Thanx in advance.
paulie 4x I do not know if your pistols are repro's or original. I believe a fellow UA-camr ***** would have the knowledge to answer your question. In fact a comment from him on this video, mentions the fact some were available in pairs. Good luck on your search.
Does your cva derringer philadelphia have serial numbers, I did notice it did have sights, but very close looking to mine.
paulie 4x yes, this little gun does have a six digit number, and a front sight only.
That is soo cool
good job
Oh you'll get the BP bug now.
its dead for sure nice //tom
Thanks for watching guns4fun....
Lots of fun BillGoudy, Thanks for stopping by.
can you "nickel" them?
Wait till you get into the black powder cap n ball revolvers and Muzzleloading rifles. Plus ATF doesn't regulate black powder firearms
wish i could find me one ...
I still have one of these in the original box I bought back in the late 70's.
Let me know when you’re ready to sell it.
Thanks Gunz,,,
Thanks trees...
I second all those questions.
Encore!
Where can I buy one?
Awesome

I built one of these in 1972 as a birthday present for my father when I was 17 years old. Years later, when I had my own family, I bought another one for myself. Now that my father has passed, I have two of them. They are always a big hit on the Fourth of July
Now, you have a dueling pair.
