Hi, I dyed a polyamide/polyester/spandex formal dress that was a champagne colour with Rit Dyemore in the sapphire blue colour. When I was done, there was some parts on the dress that were dyed darker than the rest of the dress. It said to use the stovetop, I followed the directions, stirred it the whole time and still got this result. How can I fix this? Thank you
Usually when a dye result is darker and lighter in spots, it means that the dye bath wasn't big enough for the dye to flow freely through the fabric. A good analogy is cooking pasta- if there isn't enough water and there is too much pasta, the pasta cooks unevenly. This may have been the case but if you would give our customer care line a call, we can ask you more specific questions and help you troubleshoot how to fix this project. 866.794.0800 Mon - Fri, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. CST
I'd like to freshen up a poly/cotton blen forest green sofa cover and dye it the same color. Unfortunately the green DyeMore looks a little too bright. Should I just use an extra bottle? How many? Thanks!
Well, blue should change the tone, possibly the shade, a bit darker and cooler, yellow should make it a warmer tone. Black, and maybe navy blue should darken the shade. I've seen forest greens in so many varying tones and shades, but most are cooler tones, with a slight bluish undertone... Experiment with it, using a scrap, place that won't show... A base ratio of dye to water should be on the bottle. Use that to calculate the amount of dye for a cup/half cup of water. Just keep track of your ratios, for example, 10 drops of green, 2 drops of black..., per cup or half cup of water, so you can repeat the combination you like, in larger quantities. Have fun with it. :)

Aimee Ella You can use our Graphite dye! Just make sure you use the stovetop makos to maintain an almost boiling temperature for the duration of your dyeing.
Joshua Vargas hey! Hope you’ve found the answer but if not; I’ve read that the percentage of synthetic fibers should be more than 35% to use the synthetic dyes.
Hi Dianne. As long as you can fit the plastic dish rack submerged in a big enough pot to maintain the dyebath temperature, yes! It's important to note that you can only dye from light to dark.

I bought a beautiful white blouse made of polyester/elastane I want to make it a periwinkle lavender color. What kind of dyes would work best and what's the best way to go about this?
When dyeing polyester, you will need to use our DyeMore products. Also, we have a color library on our website that will give you color formulas for a shade of periwinkle. You can view the color library here: www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/?type=203&hue=209&collection=0&collaboration=0
Oh I realize this is from the company I’m kind of disappointed that it’s not a person talking about steps. Also do you have a white shirt and many of us have a different color so I was wondering how you choose a color if my skirt is baby blue and then I choose a red RIT dye how close to the bottle color will I get or will it be a red purple? Color wheel concept?
If you are planning to dye an item that already has color, the best method is to remove the color first with our Color Remover product. If you don't have access to our color remover product, then you can try dyeing over the existing color. It will work best if you are dyeing the item a darker shade than it's current color.
The store close to me only had DyeMore Synthetic dyes available, but I want to dye a pair of pants that are 98% cotton (other 2% being Lycra and Spandex). Do I follow the same DyeMore directions for these pants as I would a fully synthetic garment, or do I need to change it up add salt or anything?
I have a 100% polyester pink bridesmaid dress.. that I want to dye greyish blue, but will it ruin it in a boiling hot water? Or make it shrink? It's snug now help!
Hi Denise! Polyester is a synthetic fiber known for its immunity to shrinking. If you can, we recommend testing a swatch prior to dyeing the entire dress. Our dye specialist are also available at info@ritdye.com for any questions! Hope this helps.
For the best results, we would recommend submerging the canvas in a dyebath for 20-60 minutes and then rinsing with water. If you simply wipe on the dye and don't rinse with water, it may rub onto clothing or other items.
Hi! I have a big quantity of fabric to dye (11 yards) and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't fit in a pot on the stovetop. The fabric is made of pale pink polyester, nylon and lurex (Creole Pink Metallic Floral Brocade from Mood Fabrics) and I want to dye it black, while keeping the shiny lurex fibers pink. What would be the best procedure to do so?
Constant heat is the key to successful, darker colors with DyeMore and since the fabric must be able to flow freely in the dye bath, 11 yards is likely to be too much to dye at once. If you are able to cut the fabric down and dye it in batches, that would be a possible solution. We have also picked up very large lobster pots at yard sales that are nice for large quantities of dyeing. We also recommend that you swatch test your fabric before committing to a larger batch dye. Our darkest color in the DyeMore line is called Graphite which is a very, very dark grey - not quite true black. Silyah246 I did a large quantity like that in my washer! Once the hot water fills up add the dye and turn off the washer to let it sit for an hour or so then turn it back on and let it continue its cycle.
Jacqueline Newman Did it dye evenly? Thanks. I have cushion covers for an outdoor lounge.. so it needs to be the washing machine tub. I wanted to do it in one lot.. thank you!!!!
Your website and bottle instructions say to use “1 teaspoon of dish detergent for dye level”. This how to video doesn’t use any - so what is it, use or don’t use dish detergent?
what is the relationship between volume of water used to the amount of dye used to the weight of the fabric used? ie , do you use 3 litres of water to each 300ml of rit dye used?
Hey Michael! Depends on the saturation level you're going for but as a general rule of thumb we recommend half a bottle for a 3 gallon dyebath or one bottle of Rit DyeMore will dye up to two pounds of dry fabric.
I've been trying to figure out how to mix colors from the Dye more series, I need a very deep blood/crimson red for a costume, what mix or concentration would you recommend?
We don't have color recipes developed for our DyeMore line as of yet. Because there is still a limited color range for DyeMore, the color mixes aren't as nuanced as what you can achieve with our core line of non-synthetic dye. However, Racing Red might get you close, depending on what color you are starting with. Feel free to call our customer care line directly for more specific help on your individual project: 866.794.0800
Good point, Angela. Mixing colors with DyeMore is similar to the steps we show for mixing our core colors. Just add in the heat and make sure your swatches used for testing are of the same material your final project needs to be. www.ritstudio.com/color-library/how-to-mix-colors/
Hi there! To determine how much dye is needed, weigh the item to be dyed on a food scale or estimate the weight. As a general guideline, one bottle of Rit DyeMore will dye up to two pounds of dry fabric. Hoodies typically weigh up to a pound, so half a bottle in a 3 gallon dyebath should do the trick!
I want to dye my wedding dress black. It's 100% polyester. Any advice on how to dye something so large? Can I add boiling water to my bathtub or a large plastic tote?
We recommend adding water from the stovetop to your larger dye bin. But make sure to keep consistently adding the hot water because polyester fabric requires consistent heat to absorb the dye.
Dani: Graphite is a very, very dark grey. We would need to know the specific fabric content of your swimsuit to give you the best answer. In general, regular Rit dye (which you can buy in black) will dye the nylon portion of the fabric. If there are spandex fibers will not absorb the dye. However, since the spandex is usually a small percentage of the fabric blend, the fabric can be dyed, which may result in a lighter shade depending upon the amount of spandex. Feel free to give our customer care line a call if you have other questions.
I don't understand if we have to keep the cooker on after I immerse thee clothes? Or I have to turn it off? From what I can see, it seems the water still boiling. My fear is the dress could remains burnt touchin the pot bottom.
I tern it down to a simmer. you also have to stir constantly so no part of your fabric is touching the bottom of the pot for too long. stirring for 30 minutes can be tiring so I get a friend to help some time.
Rubbing alcohol will not remove the dye. You could try first putting glue on the spots that you don’t want color then applying dye. This is called a Resist Technique. Or if you are looking for a splattering effect you could mix 2 Tablespoons hot water with1 Tablespoon of Color Remover and splatter to make a pattern. Make sure to take care cause anywhere the Color Remover lands or is rinsed will remove color.
I want to dye a blanket but I don't have a big enough pot. My washing machine is a front-loading one so that's also a bit tricky and would dye the plastic parts. Any other ideas? Is heat imperative?
We have instructions for how to dye items in a front loading washing machine that you can view below. Hot water is imperative to achieve the best results. You can also get a big plastic storage bin to dye the blanket in and heat water on the stove top before pouring it into the bin. Hope this helps! www.ritdye.com/instructions/how-to-dye-using-the-washing-machine/
Thanks for sharing . I am looking to dye plastic milk bottle. Can I do this? If so, should I use synthetics? Also, after the water is boiled to desired temperature, do you still leave the heat on and add the dye and continue the process or no heat ? Thanks in advance
Hi there! DyeMore for Synthetics is great for dyeing polyethylene. You want to keep your dyebath consistent at an almost-boiling temperature throughout the dyeing process so keep the heat on but be very careful as thin plastics like milk jugs tend to warp in the heat.
To clean the machine, we recommend wiping around the inside of the lid and pour a little bleach through the internal dispenser (if there is one) as dyes can get into these areas. Then, fill washer to the highest water level there is and select the hottest water temperature setting. Add detergent with 450 mL of chlorine bleach and run a full wash cycle with 3 old towels. For more info, visit www.ritdye.com/instructions/how-to-dye-using-the-washing-machine/ Hope this helps!

DyeMore would be the best dye choice for fabric with a high polyester content. For y our project (which sounds really fun), you would want to work with 2 different colors. Royal Purple and you could choose 1 of the 2 blue shades we have in our DyeMore line. Feel free to call our customer care line with specific questions before you start your project. Happy dyeing!
I want to dye slip covers that are on a window seat...but unsure of material. No tags on covers. The material has a shine to it. What product should I use?
It seems likely that the fabric is synthetic. If it is possible to cut a tiny swatch of fabric to test before you dye all your covers, that would be the safest step to take before transforming your fabric. Without tags, we can't 100% be sure of the best answer for you but our guess is that DyeMore would be your best option. Just be aware that the high heat required with DyeMore isn't recommended for all finished fabrics (cotton, while we have used DyeMore successfully with cotton) could shrink in very hot water, for example) so proceed with caution. Feel free to email us with photos or more specific questions if you have more questions! Happy dyeing!

We recommend using a stainless steel or enamel pot. Aluminum pots can also be used, but the aluminum can become scratched and pitted from the salt in the dye so using an old pot you no longer care about might be the best course of action in this case. It’s always best to keep containers for dyeing separate from those used for cooking. If you must use a container that’s also used for cooking, it is recommended to clean the container with chlorine bleach or a powdered cleanser after dyeing.
I want to dye a red dress in black, it's 95% polyester and 5% elastane. how do I make it really black? because I feel like it may result in a dark red instead of a really black color
DyeMore does not come in black. The closest to black is Graphite (a very dark grey). You can always swatch test a part of the dress to determine what your overall color will be before you dye the whole thing (swatch test- dyeing an unseen portion of the dress like the lining or a bit of the underside of hem if that is available).

Is there a way to remove the dyes already on the plastic?
If I wanted to dye my outdoor umbrella made of polyester/plastic....would this work? I understand patio umbrellas made of polyester are made to be stain resistant, so I was concerned that the dye wouldn't absorb.
As long as there isn't a waterproof coating on it and can fit into a dyebath, it should work. But for a more thorough tips, please reach out to our dye specialists at info@ritdye.com
Hi, is this product suitable for dying PE / PP plastic?
I have a khaki Air Force flightsuit I’m looking to dye, 65/35 poly cotton blend. Already prewashed, looking to go with an off blue color knowing the a bit of the khaki color will have an affect on the outcome. How much dye would you recommend for a jumpsuit that fits a 6’2” 235lb person?
So if i wanted a good, soild black, would mixing the cotten black dye and the graphite dyemore work or no?
Hi!
I just want to ask for some advice, I have this rain jacket/ wind runner that is made out of 100% polyester, it is white with black patterns on it and I wanted to dye it black to cover up the patterns, do you have any suggestions that I could do?
Thankyou, have a nice day :)
Aimee Ella You can use our Graphite dye! Just make sure you use the stovetop makos to maintain an almost boiling
temperature for the duration of your dyeing.
I have a pair of white pants that are 98 percent cotton and 2 percent spandex. Would DyeMore be the best dye to use since it has a synthetic fabric?
Joshua Vargas hey! Hope you’ve found the answer but if not; I’ve read that the percentage of synthetic fibers should be more than 35% to use the synthetic dyes.
Is it possible to dye black curtains to grey and could you dye your carpet with this
Hi Rit! I have these 100% polyester pants that I want to dye red the only problem is that they are black....is there any way I can make them red?
No
Could I dye say... a cheap plastic dish rack or plastic kitchen utensils?
Hi Dianne. As long as you can fit the plastic dish rack submerged in a big enough pot to maintain the dyebath temperature, yes! It's important to note that you can only dye from light to dark.
will this also dye the cotton in a polyester/cotton t shirt?
There's a pair of pants I want that I couldn't find in a satisfying combination of colors, so I was just going to get it in white and tie-dye it, but it's 100% polyester. Is it possible to use DyeMore to tie-dye anything 100% polyester? If so, how would I go about it? :)
What is the best paint for nylon and polyester? I don't wanna dye it, i just want to touch up the print cracked on the nylon windbreaker
We don't sell paint, just fabric dye. If the fabric has more than 35% polyester, you'll need to use our DyeMore product.
Hey. I need to dye 2,5m light coloured fake leather and I am wondering does it work if I use 80l box and fill it with hot water, put dye innit and then fabric. I get +60°C from tap, but I also can boil some water if dye needs hotter tempature.
Can I use Rit dye synthetic mixed with rit dye all purpose? ( I want to use it on nylon)
I machine dyed a pair of polyester capri paints. They were a light green, I dyed them emerald, they color turned out very pretty, but they ended up having bolotches of color on the inseams and on the front. I did not use Rit DyeMore, ( had never heard of it.), Oh, I also used Rit Color remover on them. I now would like to know how to get rid of the color distortions as I can not wear them like this. Please comment back quickly as I want to take them on a trip with us to wear at some point and we are leaving fairly soon. Thank you,
Jane Sokolik and 2 years later... no reply. RIT is a joke!
I'm wanting to dye a 100% polyester wedding dress blue, purple, and black. Should I still follow these steps?

amazing video!
I used dyemore and it ate holes through my favorite shirt. As I rinsed it the holes began to grow until I had a wash rag.
Ohh no dam what?! Why? Did you contact the company??
I bought a beautiful white blouse made of polyester/elastane I want to make it a periwinkle lavender color. What kind of dyes would work best and what's the best way to go about this?
When dyeing polyester, you will need to use our DyeMore products. Also, we have a color library on our website that will give you color formulas for a shade of periwinkle. You can view the color library here:
www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/?type=203&hue=209&collection=0&collaboration=0
Rit Dye good tip thank your for that information.
Hey there, you can follow the same instructions and add salt as it helps the dye stick to the cotton fibers.
I have a 100% polyester pink bridesmaid dress.. that I want to dye greyish blue, but will it ruin it in a boiling hot water? Or make it shrink? It's snug now
help!
Hi Denise! Polyester is a synthetic fiber known for its immunity to shrinking. If you can, we recommend testing a swatch prior to dyeing the entire dress. Our dye specialist are also available at info@ritdye.com for any questions! Hope this helps.
I have some motorcycle canvas saddlebags that I want to restore the black finish. Can I just wipe the canvas with the dye directly and let dry?
For the best results, we would recommend submerging the canvas in a dyebath for 20-60 minutes and then rinsing with water. If you simply wipe on the dye and don't rinse with water, it may rub onto clothing or other items.
@@ritcolorcommunity thanks for responding.
Hi there! For fabrics, we recommend using dish detergent to promote level dyeing, it's not needed for dyeing plastics. Hope this helps!
what is the relationship between volume of water used to the amount of dye used to the weight of the fabric used? ie , do you use 3 litres of water to each 300ml of rit dye used?
However, Racing Red might get you close, depending on what color you are starting with. experiment. follow the color theory till you get it right. itll take trial and error
Good point, Angela. Mixing colors with DyeMore is similar to the steps we show for mixing our core colors. Just add in the heat and make sure your swatches used for testing are of the same material your final project needs to be. www.ritstudio.com/color-library/how-to-mix-colors/
Rit Dye youre making me blush
=)
Do I have to boil the fabric
If I wanted to do the scrunch technique on just one sweatshirt 40 poly/60 cotton what is the measurement on Rit Dyemore synthetic to water
Hi there! To determine how much dye is needed, weigh the item to be dyed on a food scale or estimate the weight. As a general guideline, one bottle of Rit DyeMore will dye up to two pounds of dry fabric. Hoodies typically weigh up to a pound, so half a bottle in a 3 gallon dyebath should do the trick!
did the pot turn blue as well?
I want to dye my 100% polyester fleece jacket but it says to wash in cold water - will putting it on the stove just below boiling harm it?
We don't recommend using the stove top method for items that are cold-wash only. This will oftentimes lead to shrinking.
Will this ruin the pot?
I want to dye my wedding dress black. It's 100% polyester. Any advice on how to dye something so large? Can I add boiling water to my bathtub or a large plastic tote?
We recommend adding water from the stovetop to your larger dye bin. But make sure to keep consistently adding the hot water because polyester fabric requires consistent heat to absorb the dye.
@@ritcolorcommunity thank you so much for responding!
Does it work well on fleece? And is dye come off after washings?
Hey there! It does work on synthetic fleece.
I want to ombre my white swim suit with black. Is graphite black of is it gray? If it's gray, should I use the all purpose dye to get black?
I need to dye the stitching on my jeans to be black for work how long do i boil them for??
can I do same with polyester hat that is brown and I want to make cream?
If I'm trying to make a design, will dripping rubbing alcohol on the fabric while it's wet remove the dye?
Thanks for your response. Appreciate it. Is it safe to do the process inside the house?
@@vandanakdr It sure is! We recommend having a fan on or cracking open a window for ventilation.
So it will dye my Zeny washing machine? And the plastic parts in a commercial washer?
To clean the machine, we recommend wiping around the inside of the lid and pour a little bleach through the internal dispenser (if there is one) as dyes can get into these areas. Then, fill washer to the highest water level there is and select the hottest water temperature setting. Add detergent with 450 mL of chlorine bleach and run a full wash cycle with 3 old towels. So I heard Rit changed the formula a while back and it no longer is able to dye certain plastics for RC cars. Is this a stronger formula for plastic?
It is, Colin. We do see people dyeing their RC cars with great results using our core line of dyes (they have innovative ways to get the color they are going for) but our DyeMore line was created specifically for synthetic materials.
So using the DyeMore line will provide me with better results then other Rit Dye products when used on my plastic RC chassis?
can you dye a beige color totally black?
I want to dye a pink dress purple I am gonna try to pick up blue and then purple do you think that would be okay?
Hi there! Our dye specialists can help you at info@ritdye.com if you send over a photo of your garment and the end color you'd like to achieve.
Can and have you used the pot for food afterwards T^T I didn’t question it till afterwards
other poly dyes I have used all said to never use your dye pot for food. you can get a really big pot at wall mart for 17$ to 25$
I usually thrift my pots... got mine for $6
And I only use it for dyeing /craft projects (such as bleaching)
Can I add isopropyl alcohol to the dye to make alcohol ink?
I dyed a white gi top using Graphite and I followed the instructions, letting it boil for 30 mins but it came out too dark and it has some white spots. Is there any way to lighten it up and even out the color?

I have a blue fabric that's 80% polyester 20% spandex, will this still work? I have about 1.5 yards and I'm not sure how much to use either. I'm trying to make a gradient/ombre blue and purple design for a mercy celestial cosplay.
Would this work on fur?? I have a large commission with different colors that would be cheaper to just dye. Could it work??

what happens if you use an aluminum pot?

Which color is the dye used in this video?
It's the exact shade of blue that I need, but I can't quite make out what it says on the bottle.
Saphire Blue
Can we use it on polyester too??
Yes, DyeMore can be used on polyester.
Will this work on tulle fabric?
I have a question. When do you iron the fabric: before dyeing or after?
Before wearing.
Should you use Rit Dye or Rit Dye More if you want to tint lens that are plastic lens?
