I would have loved to see a slow championship final in the 1500m with prime Matthew Centrowitz, prime Fermin Cacho, prime Jim Ryun, prime Sebastian Coe, prime Rui Silva, prime Noureddine Morceli, prime Hicham El Guerrouj, and prime Abdi Bile at the starting line. Now THAT would've been a sight to behold.
People can bitch and complain about the time but in the end Centro still goes home as the Olympic champion, taking down some BIG names. Great tactical race
@Kelly Mojica I find both are amazing to watch. Fast races are great because of the threat of a World or Olympic record. But tactical races are great as we see the strategy that goes into running these kinds of races. You clearly don’t know the sport if you ONLY like fast races.
I find it interesting that races turn out this way. If one of the runners would run at a fast pace (55/ lap) from the start, they would all have to follow, because it's the fastest/ most efficient way to run this distance. Seems like they mutually agreed on doing at that way, I wonder if they agreed on this strategy before the race or they just all knew they have the best chance of finishing in a good place if they just do what everyone else does. Interesting race. I'm training for the 800m, but I didn't compete in a race yet. I'm very excited to do so next month.
the African runners didn't take Centrowitz seriously - they all thought they could blow him away in the final 300 meters. But he as comfortable at 1k and that was when he started turning it on, just over a lap to go. Great race.

My coach is a 3:37 1500m runner and he told me the reason the race ended up like this is because whoever takes the lead is immediately negatively impacting their race due to not being able to draft and not knowing the placement of people behind them. Also everyone is so closely fit they rather not risk seeing who's feeling the best that day by going all out from the gun. Seems fair, but it's still definitely boring.. what happens when there's no rabbit and people really really wanna win xD
Having run a hundred 1500m races, this is somewhat true. Rarely does the frontrunner win a race due the ability of the rest to draft off the leader. In this case, since the pace was so "slow", there was not a lot of drafting benefit. In the end, it was a true testament to Centrowitz's ability to lead from start to finish and hold off the world's best. The leader does not negatively impact the race. The rest have their opportunity to "take over" the race. In this case, they could/would not.
Back in 1936 olympics the winner ran the 1500m in 3:47 3 seconds faster than Rio and whilst running on dirt track. But I understand this was a tactical race

Even if Centro never wins another Olympic medal, this is still a race to be proud of, regardless what anyone says about the slower time. It was a strategic race and he ran it exactly how he wanted and won the whole damn thing. That isn't on him, that's on everyone else for not having a response. A win is a win is a win, and I don't know if anyone is ever going to pull off a race like this again at this level.

Its mind boggling that someone like Kiprop, with a PB of 3.26.69 would do this. If he had treated this as a time trial, nobody would have stayed with him.

It was ridiculous, they were throwing the dice on this one. Not the best miler, or even the most fit, it was the fastest sprinter. This race didnt start until last 300m.

This race was setup perfectly for a guy who wasn't in the final, Robbie Andrews of the US. He had 1:43 800 speed, but was DQ'd in the semi after qualifying because he was forced off the track for 1 stride. They appealed but it was denied.
You can hate the final time but this was one of the smartest tactical races I’ve ever seen. Centrowitz certainly didn’t come into the race with the fastest pr but he had a game plan and executed it and that’s what wins championship races
If you are a 1500 meter runner and can run a 48 second 400 like Centrowitz this was the dream scenario come true. Run the first 1,100 at slower pace a than high school boys race, and then start the bell lap in the lead and on the inside of lane one, and run a 49 second last lap. For everyone else: You need to run 48 flat or faster for your last 400 to beat Centrowitz. And if you could do that you wouldn’t be in the 1,500 to begin with. You’d be in the 800.
I like the speech about inspiring the next generation by the announcer at the end of this piece. I am visualizing 5 years later, Cole Hocker pointing at Centrowitz as he speeds past him at the finish of the US Trials. And three years after that, Hocker did that to the world.

Centrowitz may not get the Diamond League wins, but he's a great Championship runner - his positions at Championships are always well above his ranking. He won Bronze in 2011, 4th in London, 2nd in Moscow, he finished 8th in Beijing whilst recovering from injury, he won Gold in Portland and now Olympic GOLD to top it off.
An amazing race. The time is irrelevant. Matthew Centrowitz took control of the race and said to the competition, "if you want the gold medal you're going to have to get past me". Nobody did.
@cyoungrun1 Nope, Michael Young is exactly right (and you're wrong, as you so often are). Centrowitz is almost always superb at establishing and holding a strong position in a race. This time he took that approach to its logical extreme. Watch, for example, how he accelerated to keep Souleiman out in the second lane as they entered the final lap. Centro simply refused to give up his position on the rail, which was a smart move, as the results show. Luck had little to do with it.

Couldn't watch this and not comment. Before I get lambasted, please read all the comment, not just the first bit. First bit then: This was the weakest, most mediocre 1500m Olympic final, probably in history. With a second lap of practically 70 seconds, you have to think that, Almaz Ayana, in the Women's 10,000m world record, ran practically that for every lap of her 25 laps round this same track only a few days earlier for her gold medal. Second bit: That said, the last lap was nothing short of spectacular, and by far the fastest last lap in a 1500m Olympic final ever.To put it into some context: the 50.6 seconds that Centrowitz ran here is exactly the same time that Steve Ovett ran in the 800m in the Moscow Olympics in 1980, where he buried Sebastian Coe and, for an 800m race, that is also the fastest last lap ever seen. So Centrowitz was deceptively fast here. When you think about this a bit more, that means he ran back to back 200m splits of 25.3 seconds. If you notice Kiprop closed on Centrowitz by 3 - 4 metres in the penultimate 200m, he must have run something like 24.5 seconds, which for 1500m runners is a flat-out sprint. It is little surprise then, that he completely died in the home straight. To address some others' comments here, such as Emil's, most championship races turn out this way, with 1000m jogging followed by 500m - 400m final lap sprints for several reasons. Some athletes believe they can out-sprint all the competition so they hang back. Some are never in the race so they are not competitive. But the real issue is with the more favoured athletes, some of whom make disasterous tactical errors, as happened here. There is no way, in normal circumstances that Centrowitz should have won this race. Indeed, more than half the field had faster times than him. With championship races nearly always turning out to be tactical, with nearly 3 slow laps followed by a last lap sprint, the best tactic any athlete could deploy is to train for this specific scenario. This involves a completely different training programme to normal 1500m running. The only country, as a whole, that knows and trains for this, is Spain. And we all know what happened in 1992, when Fermin Cacho won in exactly the same style of race as this one. But full credit to Centrowitz on this spectacular performance. It was an exciting race.
He won fair and square, no argument with that. It just seems to make for a boring event. Perhaps the style will change come 2020 if Matt runs again .... his competitors will say not again.

That was pretty stupid from Kiprop. His PB is below 3:27 and he did here slower than 3:50, He should have taken the lead after 300 meters and progress with the speed to the end without any significant kick and for sure he would have a medal with 3:35.
Yup, Kiprop would win if he ran smart because he has the best time in his legs of all the people in the race, but he broke the rhythm few times what costed him a poor finish. He cannot compete with some others who are better in sprint.
If you're in better shape than anyone you need to run hard the whole race. He was so dumb here. Trying to outsprint guys when they're fast enough to run sub 47 400m is so stupid. Centrowitz owned everyone here

True "talent" is more than God given genetics! A very good, but inferior runner relative to the field, won the gold because he controlled the race from gun. Every time Matt was challenged he fought to take back control. He comfortably strided (like a "Kenyan..." flat foot strike-under the pelvis) to conserve energy, while forcing everyone else to uncomfortbly run bunched... another words, he made them all his bitch, and in the last 400, he out kicked (while NEVER breaking "Kenyan" form) the greatest field of milers ever assembled. THE most brilliant race strategy in the history of the 1500! Take nothing away from Matt. He deserves his gold as much, if not more, than anyone has ever. SIMPLY BRILLIANT.
Great lesson to run your own race. Asbel Kiprop, who was the fastest in the field in terms of his personal best decided to go along with the pace, and it ended up costing him at the end.
Great tactical race by Centrowitz. He lead from the start and only a few of the other runners were willing to challenge for the lead (don't blame Centrowitz for going slow...all the other runners in the field had the opportunity to lead...they decided not to). Definite props to Willis who at his age can run with the best of them(still).
And yes the field set him up...I remember Athens 04, the announcer stating after a 63 second lap, "El G could eat a candy bar and run a 63"...and these cats threw a 69 on the board. Boo

Yeah the fourth is only three quarters of a lap. So 38 seconds is about the pace of 51 second lap.
The only thing I didn't like about this Olympic final is how many people who know absolutely nothing about the 1500m and track in general came out of the woodwork to say dumb things about the time.
thanks very much for posting this. i don't understand the animosity below. interesting how it became an 800. 800 to 1200 looks to be about 55. final around 49.2 for centrowitz? remarkable. it would be interesting to read an interview with all participants to understand what they would have done differently if they could turn back the clock.

Fun fact: the 1500m hadn’t been that slow in the Olympics since 1932 when Luigi Beccali (Italy) ran 3:51.2

That was a brilliant strategy of Centrowitz. He led, but slowly, and then he kicked in an won. Pure genius.
Centrowitz may not get the Diamond League wins, but he's a great Championship runner - his positions at Championships are always well above his ranking. He won Bronze in 2011, 4th in London, 2nd in Moscow, he finished 8th in Beijing whilst recovering from injury, he won Gold in Portland and now Olympic GOLD to top it off.
Open your eyes. This race was rigged. Money talks. These elites took a fall so Centro could win. He gets destroyed when it’s a real race.

An amazing race. The time is irrelevant. Matthew Centrowitz took control of the race and said to the competition, "if you want the gold medal you're going to have to get past me". Nobody did.
@cyoungrun1 Nope, Michael Young is exactly right (and you're wrong, as you so often are). Centrowitz is almost always superb at establishing and holding a strong position in a race. This time he took that approach to its logical extreme. Watch, for example, how he accelerated to keep Souleiman out in the second lane as they entered the final lap. Centro simply refused to give up his position on the rail, which was a smart move, as the results show. Luck had little to do with it.

Matt didn't "control" anyone. He didn't have any mental power over everyone. They just ran stupid, so stop giving Matt credit where it isn't due. Even a high school kid could have taken the lead during the first two laps. Yes, it DOES matter that there were runners in the race faster than him (making their races even more pathetic, but not because of Matt). This turned into nothing more than an 800 meter race, so Matt was very lucky things unfolded the way they did.

The time is irrelevant, a PB and fourth place ! Centrwitz took complete control from the start, doing just what was necessary to win. Without a doubt the best runner in the race.
Couldn't watch this and not comment. Before I get lambasted, please read all the comment, not just the first bit. First bit then: This was the weakest, most mediocre 1500m Olympic final, probably in history. With a second lap of practically 70 seconds, you have to think that, Almaz Ayana, in the Women's 10,000m world record, ran practically that for every lap of her 25 laps round this same track only a few days earlier for her gold medal. Second bit: That said, the last lap was nothing short of spectacular, and by far the fastest last lap in a 1500m Olympic final ever.To put it into some context: the 50.6 seconds that Centrowitz ran here is exactly the same time that Steve Ovett ran in the 800m in the Moscow Olympics in 1980, where he buried Sebastian Coe and, for an 800m race, that is also the fastest last lap ever seen. So Centrowitz was deceptively fast here. When you think about this a bit more, that means he ran back to back 200m splits of 25.3 seconds. If you notice Kiprop closed on Centrowitz by 3 - 4 metres in the penultimate 200m, he must have run something like 24.5 seconds, which for 1500m runners is a flat-out sprint. It is little surprise then, that he completely died in the home straight.
To address some others' comments here, such as Emil's, most championship races turn out this way, with 1000m jogging followed by 500m - 400m final lap sprints for several reasons. Some athletes believe they can out-sprint all the competition so they hang back. Some are never in the race so they are not competitive. But the real issue is with the more favoured athletes, some of whom make disasterous tactical errors, as happened here. There is no way, in normal circumstances that Centrowitz should have won this race. Indeed, more than half the field had faster times than him.
With championship races nearly always turning out to be tactical, with nearly 3 slow laps followed by a last lap sprint, the best tactic any athlete could deploy is to train for this specific scenario. This involves a completely different training programme to normal 1500m running. The only country, as a whole, that knows and trains for this, is Spain. And we all know what happened in 1992, when Fermin Cacho won in exactly the same style of race as this one.
But full credit to Centrowitz on this spectacular performance. It was an exciting race.

He won fair and square, no argument with that. It just seems to make for a boring event. Perhaps the style will change come 2020 if Matt runs again .... his competitors will say not again.
Cacho ran his last lap in about 50.4 in 1992, which is more impressive considering the pace was some 10 seconds faster at 800m.

He is a great athlete, he could've won medals in both races like he did in 2016 but probably, he wanted to play on the safe side.
100 years from now novice track and field spectators might think they ran the mile in 2016, but Centro went home the victor with an amazing last 800m and tactical race. Matt Centro will always go down as one of the United States greatest 1500m/mile runners. He's got the hardware and times to prove it.

Brilliant tactical race dominated by Centrowitz. Throughout Matty steadfastly dictated the pace then stole is all with his blistering finish. This tough little kid is the stuff legends are made. Nice to see an American Olympic 1500 meters gold after such a long absence.....Go Matty.

That was pretty stupid from Kiprop. His PB is below 3:27 and he did here slower than 3:50, He should have taken the lead after 300 meters and progress with the speed to the end without any significant kick and for sure he would have a medal with 3:35.

True "talent" is more than God given genetics! A very good, but inferior runner relative to the field, won the gold because he controlled the race from gun. Every time Matt was challenged he fought to take back control. He comfortably strided (like a "Kenyan..." flat foot strike-under the pelvis) to conserve energy, while forcing everyone else to uncomfortbly run bunched... another words, he made them all his bitch, and in the last 400, he out kicked (while NEVER breaking "Kenyan" form) the greatest field of milers ever assembled. THE most brilliant race strategy in the history of the 1500! Take nothing away from Matt. He deserves his gold as much, if not more, than anyone has ever. SIMPLY BRILLIANT.
Great lesson to run your own race. Asbel Kiprop, who was the fastest in the field in terms of his personal best decided to go along with the pace, and it ended up costing him at the end.

Great tactical race by Centrowitz. He lead from the start and only a few of the other runners were willing to challenge for the lead (don't blame Centrowitz for going slow...all the other runners in the field had the opportunity to lead...they decided not to). Definite props to Willis who at his age can run with the best of them(still).
And yes the field set him up...I remember Athens 04, the announcer stating after a 63 second lap, "El G could eat a candy bar and run a 63"...and these cats threw a 69 on the board. Boo
