I recall the days (before social media) when a fan had NO ACCESS to the band, unless they had a backstage pass, or paid money for a snail mail fan club membership, or read a magazine like Metal Edge. Now social media has erased the divide.

It’s so disgusting how fans have been treating artists. On top of cancel culture and toxic trolls, the fans that cross so many boundaries that it’s unsettling is crazy. David Draiman posted a lovely photo of him and his girlfriend and all the comments were just picking her apart and shitting on both of them as if they have a say in who he dates. People need to learn the difference between being a fan and being a friend. We are so blessed to live in a time where we can connect with our favourite artists on such a personal level that was never available before. We can see a bit more into their lives we can get a peak behind the scenes and yet we demand more, and we have become so entitled that shit like this continues to happen. People shit on Ronnie Radke but he at the very least stands up for himself and sets those boundaries clear as day. Such a disgusting world we live in

Eminem wrote one of the biggest songs ever literally about this shit in 2000.
People just took the name and said, "Oh look, I'm a stan of whoever."
Legitimately, stop making artists your entire personality and life. They do not know you. You do not know them. You can relate to their music but you still do not understand them as a person.

Social media is a cancer, it’s given people an unrelenting amount of entitlement, the whole Slipknot Jay situation opened up a whole new realm of toxicity within the fanbase, barely anything has come out about what went down and they act like they know the ins and outs of the band, and in the same breath they complain that the band isn’t being fully transparent, which is unbelievably stupid considering Slipknots entire existence has been predicated on them being low down, they, along with every other band, don’t owe us anything, they release their art and music because they love it, just because you happen like it too doesn’t mean you own a piece of it.

If you truly believe you are a friend of a band or musician, the best way to convey that is to give them space and let them do their thing. An analogy I'm gonna use is going to someone's house, you don't go in the house unless they let you in, that's like bands you don't get involved personally unless they let you in

They feel entitled to message us constantly, on IG specifically, expecting us to reply at all times. Some of which is borderline harassment. How you explained it is exactly right. Hell I would love to meet Nikki sixx but you don't see me stalking him online and demanding his address, because he has a young daughter, and that would put her in danger. Honestly I agree with you about this insane fan shit. I myself being a maggot, find it stupid that other maggots are harassing the slipknot members, and their family. It's so bizarre that this happens literally after a band member leaves, or some other random controversy they get in in which they are seen to be in the wrong. It's some of the dumbest crap I've seen. I don't know how to, but we need to find a way to stop this from happening so often. Maybe, those types of fans should stay off the internet for a long while, live in the real world, and understand that they don't have to know every single detail about a bandmate's personal life and that the world doesn't evolve around themselves. If a bandmate wants to talk about their personal life, that's their choice and their free will that was given to them by God. It's not the fans job to force them to do shit. no one can mess with free will. not even god. God gave us free will so that we could control our own life, and not controlled by someone or something else.

Personally, I've had to snap myself out of this mindset with a couple of artists. I've gown up literally alongside of some of them, evolving with their tastes, and having a very deep connection to their music. There's some artists that I've seen 50+ times VIP, and they know me by name/face. I think most VIP experiences are catered the fact that the artist/band understands that these are the die -hards. I've gotten to meet, smile with, and talk to my favorite artists due to VIP opportunities, and even sidestage. That's all I could ever wish for.

This is something that has always confused and baffled me tbh. Even when I was a teenager.
One of my first jobs was kitchen work at my local airport in a bar behind security, so I had access to pretty much everyone who came through. Lots of celebrities, athletes, you name it, but every single one of them I met I treated the exact same as I would a stranger.
Some artists I was fans of liked small talk, some were busy and knowing my own boundaries I'd keep my distance, others just appreciated simply being talked to like they were an ordinary human being and not 'making a big deal' of it.
Social etiquette is something a lot of parents and teachers no longer teach their kids and I feel particularly thankful that my parents taught me that respect. The social climate in North America is just so particularly insane right now it's ridiculous.

Well, I certainly understand your point of view and agree to some extent. Still, I kind of “blame” everyone for this, “normal people”, fans and bands. Because, to be honest, what did they expect?
I mean, they all have and live for social media to get exposure, for attention, for income, for likes, for views, etc.
When “bad” things are in “small doses”, they don't care and sometimes they even laugh about it. Since having "a single hackler" can be almost a good thing, for publicity, for fans support, to practice "your" funny and cool replies, to impress and show to"your" followers what a "cool cat" you are.
The problem is when things get big and out of control. Then, suddenly, it's very bad! Well, that's exactly how social media works!
You can't have the best of both worlds. This applies to artists, bands, UA-cam channels, etc.
Examples: [Some] parents will do anything to protect their children from strangers in real life. But then, they go and post [their children's] entire lives on the internet.
Or [some] girls don't want to be bothered in real life by any male stranger [unless he arrives in a Ferrari]. God forbid, if some poor unattractive guy says something to her in real life. He is immediately a scoundrel. a weirdo, a pervert, whatever. But then, they [the girls] post almost nude or even nude photos in sexual poses on the internet, for those same likes, views and/or, to get attention.
Basically what I want to say is: if “you” want a “normal life” and privacy, don’t choose a “public artistic job”,and/or don’t put “your” entire life on the internet for strangers to see. If “you” still decided to go ahead, at least have the intelligence and back spine to know what could happen and protect "yourself", since “you” chose a “job” that depends on having an audience.
Don't be a hypocrite by thinking that it will be all just fun and games.

agree 100%, fans are truly awful and it all boils down to the sense of entitlement this generation seems to have. Be a fan, not an entitled asshole its that simple! We as fans don't have the right to claim any sort of ownership over bands or any celebrity for that matter! Social media is just awful and destructive to everything and everyone, privacy no longer exists with social media, the best way to resolve that is not indulge in social media if you want to have any sort of privacy! There is far too many entitled pricks in this world.

It’s true. And certain content usually comes with a trigger warning when tweens are consumers but some artists try to leverage their “vulnerability” (which is a symptom of narcissism/covert narcissism) which feeds into that parasocial “you saved my life” mindset. Some front persons intentionally position themselves as “saviors” in their “vulnerability” like giving “spontaneous” speeches about self harm with no warning to a crowd of tweens to seem so “vulnerable”…I find it interesting their vulnerability is performed during high visibility moments. Multiply that with emo intelligence lacking & it’s a recipe for disaster. Mind you, plenty of kids & tweens are capable of being as or more emo intelligent than some adults. Not all the kids and tweens are like that. The scene is no better when it comes to ‘idolizing’ one another either “artist” to “artist” (as they are after all just people too, like their fans, and themselves are fans) as they will selectively cancel MGK for clout on glorifying SH with his razor guitar (does Occam’s razor glorify SH because razor is mentioned?) meanwhile their cohorts’ in the scene’s lyrics/actions aren’t any better when it comes to their chummy friends in the scene. I cannot listen to MGK at all but it is obvious they went after MGK for the clout. The “artists” know what it’s like to be a fan as well.

This type of behavior has been taking place in other genres for years, western Pop music, and Korean Pop music, especially. In Korea, you will have situations where they will even find out where your personal address is stockers will follow you home every day, if they don’t like you, they will make up rumors about you and completely destroy your career. I don’t exactly know what about our culture is causing this. In all honesty I just love posting and tagging bands when I’m excited for their new releases and tours. music should just be that just music no one should feel like because they have a certain amount passion towards an artist doesn’t mean you have some kind of say in that artist life and the way they live and how they make the music you enjoy, and yes I say music should be just music as back to when people came together for like the same genre or even getting each other into genres they never have been around or experienced and going to shows with friends to party, rave, or mosh and enjoy the bands you like together. These bands and other musicians are people too and some people just can’t let that be. We understand the love for all the music we all love but some of y’all just take shit too far now and it’s makes music not as fun or enjoyable as it used to be.

I'm hardly known but even I've noticed a creepy fan account with old photoshoots being used as well as the other side of anonymous UA-cam comments telling me to stay away from making music. These are just rare cases so I can't imagine what it'd be like having that constantly when going online. Can't blame Noah for going off social media altogether.

Smaller artist here, I have had my share of some fans that became parasocial. These instances really made me uncomfortable to the point that I had to block them after being sent inappropriate messages and comments. This sucks because I want to make sure that everyone has a good time but sadly there’s some that ruin it for everyone else.

Rock band fans have killed my love on music there have been times that I feel like that they truly made the best record of their entire career however fans only could care about what they are most comfortable with they only want to listen to a specific style of music that they see in that band They Don't Care About challenges and interesting directions from music for that particular artist

He is making a fascinating observation in this situation. He is noticing the commoditization of everything around him, causing him unease. I imagine this is discouraging since he desires success and influence, yet he is also becoming conscious of how the modern world turns into a perplexing rabbit hole or 'looking glass'.

Concerning this: I commented on a video with Eric and Paul from Kiss and was contacted by a man claiming to be Paul Stanley. I answered politely thinking this was a nutcase. He was very polite as well, and finished by stating that after all the fans he’s ever chatted with I was the only one he trusted. Then the communication stopped. All very weird 🤔

Musicians and fans both often take each other for granted. Its like a bad relationship thats toxic on both sides. A lot of musicians don't appreciate what they have, and a lot of fans act like every musician is their personal friend. Its not healthy either way.

I’m not saying to not voice your opinions, definitely voice your opinions but do so with respect and kindness.

Nobody plays music just to play music anymore. Everybody just wants to be famous and rich and live this glorious. Famous m t v lifestyle because everybody glorified it back in a day, What they don't tell you is that Musicians don't make that much money. After all, the fees and everything else that they have, they make probably an average working day. Pay at least most bands, some of the hyperfamous bands might be a bit different but, I play music and I play for fun. And I personally think that bands should invest in themselves and stop going to the labels. People have gotta stop idealizing fame I think music should go back to just being about the art, not the money in the frame. I'm glad to be a starving musician. At least I didn't have to sell my soul at the cross roads.

I posted a reply below here similar to what I'm about to say here , The problem we have with social media, is the problem we as a human civilization have not just in the United States but all around the world as well, we take something that has the potential for good or could be used as just tool to live a more enriched life and find other more nefarious uses for it. Guns(we can use them just to hunt or for protection, not murder and war) drugs( many are out there to help people with problem in their own bodies but can be easily abused), and even many technical advancements(radio, TV, and lately social media can be harnessed for propaganda but have other better uses) fit into this category as well. We have the potential to do so much good with many of these things but we instead often twist the uses for out own gain. We really waste so much potential on our own greed , I'm just saying this so people realize that many if not all of these things have even more potential for good rather than evil if only we use them that way. Ultimately the problem isn't the things I just talked about it is us collectively as human beings.

Pop industry is i think a lot worse, what with most fans being teens. I've seen pics of fans who have nothing but merch in their room and nothing else. It's so friggin unhealthy and obsessive, and it's like their entire life and identity is based around that one person or group. I hate it in general when people also focus only on the singer, like the other members aren't important or don't exist.

As fans, we are not owed anything from these artists! It makes me sad and sick to my stomach, the way these so-called "fans" act, if they don't like what an artist does or says or posts or whatever it may be. You buy the album, you buy the merch, you watch the videos and you go to the shows. After that it's done that's it. You are not friends they do not need to acknowledge you it's weird af and it needs to stop!!!!

I have gotten responses from some of my favorite artists, one even recently posted my comment on all their accounts, it was a proud moment for me as a fan. It was totally unexpected and I really smiled for a day, but some came after me because I got a moment of a spotlight of being a fan, and people said they were a bigger fan and I was a poser... Seriously I was one of the first 150 people to see the bands first major video (had 2 lesser test songs a year before hand.) Yet none of them commented in the videos prior... Um... ok...

"The entitlement mentality is defined as a sense of deservingness or being owed a favor when little or nothing has been done to deserve special treatment. It's the “you owe me” attitude. Entitlement is a narcissistic personality trait". This is what I found out from Google.

Never realized this was even an issue because my generation (gen x) didn't have the means to even be so creepy. Sadly, it came on my radar being a huge Children of Bodom fan....just rolling through their social media sites in the last few years I started seeing more and more of this attitude that just by being a fan people thought they were entitled to extremely private info...even on Alexi's personal FB people posting that he "looked like shit" and demanding to know why he was so skinny and just being flat out rude about it as if since they bought a few albums and concert tickets that somehow they deserve the right to know EVERYTHING. People even attacking his ex gf or current gf when clearly they didn't know these people or anything about real life personal details..they based their attacks on assumptions or rumor mill BS. I really couldn't believe people had the balls to go right on their socials and spew this shit and demand to know such personal shit as someone's health issues. Felt terrible for the band who was clearly going through enough and was also embarrassed to be a metal fan at the time as I never saw shit like that before. It's a whole new level of creep! Nobody owes you anything, especially personal details about their life no matter how big of a fan you are. How did we get to where this isn't just common sense??
