  • Panorama Winners 1974.
Solo Harmonites were again panorama winner in 1974 with Lord Kitchener's "Jericho". Though this arrangement is credited to Rupert Mark, its got Earl Rodney's imprint all over it.

The base chords and the bridging sounds like Rupert, my Dad. He recently passed due to Alzheimer's Disease. He hummed and beat those rhythms aloud until several weeks before his death. Musical tone and pitch harmony of the steelpan was among the last memories.

1974 was the first time I had any involvement with a steel band for Panorama. I was 14 and got to play the scratcher for Birdsong. I remember the prelims in Arima was the first time I saw Solo on stage. If my memory serves me correct, Birdsong had just played and I stood and watched Solo after us. Those were the days when for the prelims the bands would continue playing as they rolled off stage and I remember wondering when all their pans would make it off stage because they had so many...

Harmonites won 1964 because Curepe Scherzando who had won the semi-finals by miles, suffered a broken drum set during their final performance, lost their rythm and placed last.
Scherzando's 1974 semi-final rendition of Shadow's "I come out to play" made all the other bands sound ordinary, but they flopped on final night.
I was in the North Stand that semi-final night and heard it live.
Wish I could find a recording of that performance. One has to exist somewhere....I just need to find it.

My first win as a pan-player...and it was quite enjoyable for me, and well-deserved, because I used to practise very hard.
