      MacKinnon ahead of Stamkos and Matthews for sure. That can change in time, but right now I just cannot in good conscience have MacKinnon so low.
      I think Hall is also too low by a few spots, though I similarly would be unsurprised to see those three guys above him surpass him in the end.

    Board was looking rough for the Oilers until McDavid showed up.
    Id put Matthews 5th, Stamkos also put 60 and won multiple cups, Kane was a menace and won multiple cups, Mackinnon is a much more complete player and won a cup so far.
    Also they were all solid (McDavid included) in the playoffs which Matthews hasn’t shown so far.

      Mackinnon is an interesting one because after his solid rookie season, he had 3 really mediocre years following (which is part of the reason why his cap hit for the past few years was such a steal.) While he is definitely one of the top superstars in the league right now, the guys ahead of him all hit the ground running, and stayed elite during those early years. But it is very close no matter what.

    • @obi-wankenobigoat
      @obi-wankenobigoat Рік тому +7

      Nah Matthews over MacKinnon. Until MacKinnon starts finishing top 3-5 in scoring consistently then he’s not better than Matthews. Also why is MacKinnon more complete? Matthews has far better defense than MacKinnon. MacKinnon is more physical but Matthews doesn’t shy away from physicality either. That’s just my opinion on it. I hate both teams though 😂

    • @MackDonald
      @MackDonald Рік тому +2

      I like MacKinnon a lot but I don't see him as being much more complete than Matthews. Matthews' defensive game is usually very good, as well as his playmaking ability. The two things MacKinnon has that sets him apart from Matthews, to me, so far, is his speed and intensity. Like McDavid, there are times where it looks like MacKinnon says to himself "let's go boys, everyone follow me", and then makes something good happen. I agree that Matthews hasn't carried the team like he should for the amount of money he's getting paid but a lot of internet comments make it sound like he's terrible in the playoffs. He has 44 points in 50 games. If he would play with a chip on his shoulder like he does everyone once in awhile, maybe the Leafs would do better in the playoffs. I was hoping that Stamkos jumping him in the first round this year would wake him up but nope.

    • @benoitrobitaille5235
      @benoitrobitaille5235 Рік тому +6

      100 pts in 77 playoff games and a cup that’s MacKinnon intensity, Matthews 44 points isnt bad by any stretch of the imagination, but if you would ask me who i would rather have when it matters most the answer is self evident.

      I look at the teammates around these players. If you swap Matthews and Stamkos and put Matthews on the 2020 and 2021 Lightning I argue the Lightning still win those Stanley Cups and I argue Stamkos isn't enough to elevate the Leafs to even get out of the first round, especially in the 2022 Playoffs. The Leafs are still falling 4-3 against Tampa Bay and swapping Stamkos for Matthews does not improve the Leafs, nor does swapping Matthews for Stamkos hurt the Lightning. That's the same with Kane and Mackinnon, Matthews with Kane's and Mackinnon's teammates and the coaching around still wins, but Kane and/or Mackinnon swapping with Matthews and playing on the Leafs team Matthews has and is currently playing on and the coaching staff Matthews has isn't elevating the Leafs to win a Stanley Cup. Hockey isn't a one player sport. Stamkos, Kane, and Mackinnon all had great support both on the ice with their teammates and on the bench with their coaching that helped win them those Stanley Cups and I do not think removing Matthews and slotting any of them into the Leafs teams Matthews was playing with causes the Leafs to improve enough to where they win a Stanley Cup.

    • @Damphouse
      @Damphouse Рік тому +18

      Its so annoying when people use team accomplishments to rank players. By that logic, McDavid should be under Kane. You can't have it both ways. Matthews won 2 rockets and a hart trophy. Mackinnon and Stamkos haven't done that before. Kane and McDavid you can argue are better, maybe Mackinnon, but Stamkos over Matthews is a no for me.

    • @crushdavis7048

      Matthews already has more career goals than Mackinnon (in 250 less games played) and if you compare just their first 7 years of their career, Matthews hands down has had the better one. Obviously MacKinnon in the recent few years plus the playoff run last season makes it a very close, but I don't think it is outlandish to have Matthews there.

    Really interesting concept for a comparison list.
    I always love looking over the draft years on Hockey DB - especially after quite a few years in the NHL.
    It would be interesting how you made or rated your assessments. Sometimes it felt it was based on "Where they are now" ... other times it felt it was more of a retrospective approach and comparing what they've accomplished as an individual or with their team. If your assessment system was front loaded, it would be easier or more clear how you rated them.

    Shannon, using what metric can you realistically put Matthews over Kane??... Sometimes I disagree with your rankings (like in this case) but I totally understand how you came to your conclusion - but you ranking Matthews over Kane here has me scratching my head, lol.. There really is no compelling argument that can be made for Matthews at #2...
    I'd easily (and objectively) have Kane over Matthews any day of the week. Keep in mind that Kane has 3 Cups and his own drawer of individual/personal Silverware.. Not to mention that Kane was a driving force in all 3 of the Hawks Championship Teams.. I mean he only scored that OT goal in 2010 to bring the Cup back to Chicago for the first time in 50 years, and of course he has a Conn Smythe Trophy.... So with that said:
    What Silverware does Matthews have again, lol??
    He has a wicked shot I'll give you that, lol - but Kane has one of his own that's just as gnarly, lol..
    And look, nobody can make the argument that Toronto didn't have the opportunities to make deep playoff runs and win Cups with Matthews, they had loaded teams, they spent to the cap ceiling -- they just CHOKED -- while Kane got it done, not once, twice but THREE times..
    And I understand when comparing players these ideas are subjective, but the more I think about it - the wider the margin becomes between Kane and Matthews..
    And look, I totally get why McDavid is #1 - but again - he has a ton of personal silverware but he's not accomplished anything in the playoffs... Isn't the goal to win Stanley Cups?? and yes, I understand many players that couldn't hold a candle to McDavid, Matthews or Kane have won multiple Cups - but the thing is - in those situations they weren't the ones driving the plane while Kane was driving the plane.. I mean these depth guys were great an certainly played a role in their teams success, but they were "mercenaries" while a guy like Kane was the pilot..
    Just my .02 cents as a hockey fan of 40 years.

    Probably behind MacKinnon too, considering MacKinnon had an insane year of 42 goals and 111 points in 72 games last season, and is *always* the better playoff performer.
    Matthews had 40 goals and 85 points in 74 games so *currently* he's trending downward. Granted it's one season, so I'd still be fine with him above MacKinnon in 4th but not 2nd.

    The biggest argument I think I could make for putting Matthews behind Kane and Mackinnon for sure, and likely Stamkos, is that these players generate the points. It's clear with this year where they took Marner off his line and his production dropped severely, that he relies on others to generate his offense. While the players that Kane, Mack and Stamkos play with help to increase their numbers, they don't rely on them the same way that Matthews does with Marner. This is also why it's unquestionable that McDavid is the #1 on the board.

After running his mouth and basically forcing Chicago to trade him to New York, all he ended up doing was messing up the team's power play and completely dogging it. "Greatest American Player" my foot. That title belongs firmly to Brian Leetch who actually CARRIED the Rangers to a Cup in 1994. Kane was just complimentary player on stacked Blackhawks teams. How long did it take Kane to match Leetch in points? And Leetch was a DEFENSEMAN! There is simply no comparison. Kane is a total dud.
