Really interesting concept for a comparison list. I always love looking over the draft years on Hockey DB - especially after quite a few years in the NHL. Sometimes it felt it was based on "Where they are now" ... other times it felt it was more of a retrospective approach and comparing what they've accomplished as an individual or with their team. Shannon, using what metric can you realistically put Matthews over Kane??... Sometimes I disagree with your rankings (like in this case) but I totally understand how you came to your conclusion - but you ranking Matthews over Kane here has me scratching my head, lol.. There really is no compelling argument that can be made for Matthews at #2... I'd easily (and objectively) have Kane over Matthews any day of the week. Keep in mind that Kane has 3 Cups and his own drawer of individual/personal Silverware.. Not to mention that Kane was a driving force in all 3 of the Hawks Championship Teams.. I mean he only scored that OT goal in 2010 to bring the Cup back to Chicago for the first time in 50 years, and of course he has a Conn Smythe Trophy.... So with that said: What Silverware does Matthews have again, lol?? He has a wicked shot I'll give you that, lol - but Kane has one of his own that's just as gnarly, lol.. And look, nobody can make the argument that Toronto didn't have the opportunities to make deep playoff runs and win Cups with Matthews, they had loaded teams, they spent to the cap ceiling -- they just CHOKED -- while Kane got it done, not once, twice but THREE times.. And I understand when comparing players these ideas are subjective, but the more I think about it - the wider the margin becomes between Kane and Matthews.. And look, I totally get why McDavid is #1 - but again - he has a ton of personal silverware but he's not accomplished anything in the playoffs... Isn't the goal to win Stanley Cups?? and yes, I understand many players that couldn't hold a candle to McDavid, Matthews or Kane have won multiple Cups - but the thing is - in those situations they weren't the ones driving the plane while Kane was driving the plane.. I mean these depth guys were great an certainly played a role in their teams success, but they were "mercenaries" while a guy like Kane was the pilot.. Just my .02 cents as a hockey fan of 40 years.
Compare the overall talent level and scoring balance on those Cup-winning teams in Chicago to the talent level on the Matthews-era Leafs teams and there isn't really that much of a comparison - Chicago's teams were just plain better overall.

Who hit 100 points sooner? Which player has had 60 goals? Which player has more Richard's? Hart's? Just because mackinnon has a cup doesn't mean anything. You need a team for a cup. This is a player draft.
If MacKinnon is behind Kane and Stamkos because of their legacy, Matthews should be behind them too. Probably behind MacKinnon too, considering MacKinnon had an insane year of 42 goals and 111 points in 72 games last season, and is *always* the better playoff performer. Stamkos has also scored 60 goals but has 2 Stanley Cups. Mackinnon has been amazing in the playoff every time he has been there and i can't say the same for Matthews.
The biggest argument I think I could make for putting Matthews behind Kane and Mackinnon for sure, and likely Stamkos, is that these players generate the points. It's clear with this year where they took Marner off his line and his production dropped severely, that he relies on others to generate his offense. While the players that Kane, Mack and Stamkos play with help to increase their numbers, they don't rely on them the same way that Matthews does with Marner. This is also why it's unquestionable that McDavid is the #1 on the board.

Anyone saying Kane should be higher obviously did not watch last season, which proved Kane was a total FRAUD. I don't see how you can put Auston Matthews ahead of Kane and Stamkos. Put aside the career accomplishments of Kane and Stamkos, at their peaks, they were both better players than Matthews.
My list: 16: Lafreniere (Yaks rookie - year was better than Laf has ever had) 15: Yakupov 14: Power 13: E. Johnson (Up to this point, has had a better career than Power) 12: Ekblad 11: RNH 10: Hall (MVP trophy. MVP.) 9: Hischier 8: Dahlin 7. Tavares 6: Hughes (Could switch places with Tavares) 5. Matthews (Playoffs are not his thing) 4: MacKinnon (Cup, playoff performer) 3: Stamkos (60 goal year, 2 cups, 2 Richards, 1 messier) 2: Kane 1: McDavid
This one confuses me for sure. Half of the players seem to be ranked based on their full careers while others have the luxury of going off of their potential.
It’d be great to see your list of best draft picks from 2-10 from 2006-2021. Not necessarily a list for each draft pick from each year but pick one player that went from 2-10 that year.
Another fun one to do but it would be a long one (20+ minutes) would to look at just the first draft pick of every team since the inception of the NHL draft. I think it started in 1963. Include teams that no longer exist as well like Quebec, Hartford, Colorado Rockies etc.
If you look at Crosby's stats in his prime around the double concussions the numbers were very similar to McDavid, its just he missed so much time. Still has 3 cups and the best player below the goal line ever
Who do you bump down? Hall that has won the hart or Nugent who is a 2 way forward that just had 104 points? I think Power will rocket up this list but he needs another year or 2
i think the only way laf could have lived up to the hype was during a real rebuild. he got double fucked over because 1) the rangers suck at developing players, and 2) they "rebuilt" so quick he never had a chance to grow and learn.

I was so pissed when we traded him to Col, but he has been a good defenseman overall. And he got a cup a few years ago. Good on EJ, still nothing but love for the dude.
yeah he catches flak for being "#1 overall dman" but ej is a fucking beaut.
Matthews is not second. While very talented and arguably the best pure goal scorer on this list, Stamkos and Kane have had much better career accomplishments and have shown longevity in point production throughout longer careers.
I think he’s more so measuring their talent and ceiling. In that case give me matthews all day over Kane and stammer
@@nickfratello4321Talent and ceiling? Then why is Power at 13?

Really interesting concept for a comparison list.
I always love looking over the draft years on Hockey DB - especially after quite a few years in the NHL.
It would be interesting how you made or rated your assessments. Sometimes it felt it was based on "Where they are now" ... other times it felt it was more of a retrospective approach and comparing what they've accomplished as an individual or with their team. If your assessment system was front loaded, it would be easier or more clear how you rated them.
But, I did enjoy your rationalizations and the depth of your perspectives. I also liked how you are open to other viewpoints too.
Matthews over Kane is a crime. Kane has 3 Stanley Cups and tons of clutch playoff moments and success.... Matthews has none of that
Stanley cups are a team accomplishment
Kane won 3 Cups on stacked teams. Whoopty-do. Did he ever carry a team the way Leetch did in 1994? Nope.
@@94champs matthews is a nobody bum come playoff time so, Kane over matthews everyday of the week looking at overall careers. if u argue against it ur nothing but a leaf homer

As a Devils fan it's totally fair to keep Tavares ahead of Hughes, but Jack probably climbs into the top 5 at some point soon
Jack definitely passes Tavares next few seasons but getting past anybody in that top 5 is tough. Not impossible but will take some time.
@@josha5266 well in the next few years Stamkos and Kane will also graduate out so it'll open a few spots, at least one for Bedard prob but it could be: 1. McDavid 2. Bedard. 3. Matthews. 4. Mac. 5. Jack in a few years once you're into 2009 and onward
As an isles fan, Jack has a much brighter future than pajama boy.

matthews ahead of mackinnon is hilarious. then its doubled down with him being over stamkos and kane? Shannon my man.. that's definitely one of the takes of all time...
dont take this the wrong way, i love your work man keep it up!
MacKinnon is better than Stamkos and Kane too...
@@thekillers1stfan id say right now mack is better than those two as a player but if you factor in awards and cups i would still give them the slight edge.
@@KamekoTsuruga Mack has a cup and only has less trophies because he has to compete with McDavid. Not to mention Stamkos and Kane weren't even the best players on those rosters they won with.
Love the J.Hughes comparison to stevey Y/ Sakic. Great comparison
So with that said:
What Silverware does Matthews have again, lol??
Good list. Crazy that MacKinnon just came off his best regular season ever and slid so far. His point per game production in the playoffs is a ‘bad’ postseason by his standards which should dawn the same argument you made for Matthews’ goal scoring dip.
Would switch dahlin and hischier
@@mannyoliveira776 how are you gonna put Nuge under Power? This list is even worse tbh. Power has done nothing to prove he's 1st overall worthy lol. Nuge just had a 100 pt season..
@@jleif7736 I'd rather take the potential of Power over the underwhelming for a #1 pick Nugent-Hopkins. Potential must already be the justification that is used in this video, even though it isn't stated, to put Hischier or even Hughes so far ahead of Nugent-Hopkins.
"Im not crazy, i had myself tested." LOL SHANNON the ungodly sound that came from my body when you said that so nonchalant
Mathews over Mackinnon is laughable
Who hit 100 points sooner? Which player has had 60 goals? Which player has more Richard's? Hart's?
Just because mackinnon has a cup doesn't mean anything. You need a team for a cup. This is a player draft.
Agree with you on the most part but absolutely no way I put Matthews over kane, Stamkos, and Mackinnon. Honestly laughable

the taylor hall curse that gets whatever team he is on the 1st overall pick should have factored into the ranking in my opinion.
If MacKinnon is behind Kane and Stamkos because of their legacy, Matthews should be behind them too.
Probably behind MacKinnon too, considering MacKinnon had an insane year of 42 goals and 111 points in 72 games last season, and is *always* the better playoff performer.
Matthews had 40 goals and 85 points in 74 games so *currently* he's trending downward. Granted it's one season, so I'd still be fine with him above MacKinnon in 4th but not 2nd.
Matthews above Stanley Cup winners???? He aint McDavid who can justify not winning yet and being above Cup winners, not even sure i would put him above Dahlin who should be #7 honestly 😂

I like Matthews and he could end up in that 2nd spot in the future for me but for now i can't say he would be over Kane Stammer or Mackinnon. Kane was amazing in his time with the Blackhawks. Stamkos has also scored 60 goals but has 2 Stanley Cups. Mackinnon has been amazing in the playoff every time he has been there and i can't say the same for Matthews.
Stamkos also scored his 60 in a much lower scoring time in the league, so IMO it's much more impressive.
The ball is in Jacks court to move up this list. I think Nico and Jack are appropriately ranked. Great video sir.
This is also why it's unquestionable that McDavid is the #1 on the board.
first few years of his career he never had marner on his line and he was still a goal scoring machine. His down year had nothing to do with that
@@Ahmad-qx6pg I guess we'll find out this year if he's closer to the 60 goal scorer, or the 40 goal scorer.

I’m very confident Owen Power can become a top defensemen in the NHL. He’s very intelligent and has both offensive and defensive upside. He’s got all the tools to become a similar player to Victor Hedman.

Thanks! You give amazing content daily, the hockey lover in me has hockey as a 365 sport.
Anyone saying Kane should be higher obviously did not watch last season, which proved Kane was a total FRAUD. After running his mouth and basically forcing Chicago to trade him to New York, all he ended up doing was messing up the team's power play and completely dogging it. "Greatest American Player" my foot. That title belongs firmly to Brian Leetch who actually CARRIED the Rangers to a Cup in 1994. Kane was just complimentary player on stacked Blackhawks teams. How long did it take Kane to match Leetch in points? And Leetch was a DEFENSEMAN! There is simply no comparison. Kane is a total dud. Thank God I don't have to look at that BUM next season wearing my team's jersey.

15: Yakupov
14: Power
13: E. Johnson (Up to this point, has had a better career than Power)
12: Ekblad

9: Hischier
8: Dahlin
7. Tavares
6: Hughes (Could switch places with Tavares)

4: MacKinnon (Cup, playoff performer)
3: Stamkos (60 goal year, 2 cups, 2 Richards, 1 messier)
