Considering what this vehicle is designed for & that the overwhelming amount of buyers wouldn't even approach a trail like your hard line I am VERY impressed. I know the camera flattens out the terrain, but judging by that wheel lift & how you're leaning out the window you can tell you where WAAAAY off camber on the hard line test lol
Please take it in the mud and sand and heavy snow too. Just because one may not be able to afford a LandRover should not mean we can’t at least give Subaru, TOYOTA, and others in this size and price category a real challenge. What did the Mazda engineers tell you is at least more practical? This test can be a real deal breaker, and you did the right thing in showing it. I plop down $50-60k for a vehicle this size and versatile, it better climb some hills too. Think of camping or heading off onto a mountain pass or if caught in a hurricane type situation with lots of loose sand and mud as in some states. Thanks.
That’s the kind of tests i have been waiting for. Good test! Mazda needs to make it more versatile also, even though the CX90 “appears” more built for highway cruising. They can do it. I try to take a vehicle I have everywhere, like in mud and sand and heavy snow. We need more versatility in that price category.
Yes we did, this episode was filmed in the same week as the road test, and upcoming technical deep dive. But at low speeds the vibrations were not present.
You need AT tires and ground clearance with long wheel base or you will high center the vehicle. Did you ask Dave Coleman why put the timing chain in the back and turn the turbo backwards as it is engine out service for timing chain replacement. Did you notice turbocharger compressor side faces firewall with liquid intercooler on the left side of the engine, starter, intake manifold, 😂 motor mounts and bunch of other services are going to be engine out for CX90 with Mazda inline 6.
Have to appreciate the effort Mazda puts in; they definitely punch way above their weight. However, they always seem to self-sabotage somewhere.. I worry this new torque converter-less transmission was a mistake. One of the nicest things about the CX-9 surprisingly is the low speed, stop and go drive-ability. A gem in stop-go traffic. Would love to see the I6 with a conventional auto, minus the hybrid system (new Mazda 6 perhaps?!)
Oh absolutely. We are running them slow on purpose to test traction aids and mechanical grip. On a normal trail ride, we would go with momentum as long as approach and break over angles would allow it.
why do Mazda use this self made 8 speed gearbox when the best automatic in the world is the zf 8 speed?...so many manufactures use it...Bentley and RR use it...BMW...ect...just use that...
Cx-50 hybrid was supposed to be already announced but they're having trouble staffing the Alabama plant where the cx-50 is made. The announcement is supposed to be delayed until q4 this year with deliveries starting shortly after. I don't know how much of that will hold true with the staffing issues but that's the latest I've read.
This vehicle is meant for sport touring not off roading, just on ground clearance and tires alone. That warning chime is so annoying lol. Still a nice Japanese alternative to the BMW variant.
Too bad the interior space is really bad 3rd row seats space is really really bad, too bad because that's a deal breaker for some like my self, I really liked the exterior and interior design :(
Hi, I think the Mazda cx90 would've made driver-focus-oriented 3.3 turbos I line six 340 hp 369 pound-feet of torque this car isn't off-road focus thanks.
I might need to stick to the Honda Pilot if you want a 3 row mid-size SUV with an actually useful AWD. This mazda looks to be great for tarmac, and that's about it.
Why not just put this body on a frame, add a rear locking differential and a 4wD case with 17 inch rims and some 32 inch AT tires? You’d have an SUV that would compete with a 4Runner.
So first we hear how a “2WD vehicle wouldn’t even make it to the obstacle” followed by a 2WD vehicle making it right up to and over the obstacle with no problem.” Maybe time for a tougher obstacle.
Those are two different obstacles we are referring too. The main line 2wd vehicles have a hard time even driving toward, then we have the bypass that is hard to get up with 2wd, and this awd system did well on it.
This is exactly what the cx90 is NOT built for! I have a CX 9 and it's more like a good sized sports wagon like an Audi all road....I tow a Fully enclosed 2 snowmobile trailer in The worst possible conditions tires make more of a difference than AWD systems!! Electronics cannot create traction the tires don't have!! 4 fully studded hakipilletta tires would turn a CRV into a snow cat!😂😂😂
I'd love a Mazda with 6 cylinder-- but NO turbo... and they've made this one UGLY-- to me (JUST MY opinion- not knocking it for anyone else)..too fat looking- rounded off too much-- they lost the classy lines.. OFFROAD on these cars meand OFF- ASPHALT!!! not off-ROAD..
Typically arrogant engineer, using a ridiculous transmission for what is basically a mini van. Except for the Miata they could dissappear tomorrow and no one would notice they were gone. They barely sell any vehicles, much like Subaru. Plus 60k for anything with the Mazda name is insane.
Why the headlights are so FUGLY and the back designed like an mini van😂. So since Mazda is copying BMW old infotainment systems for years now sooooooo why don’t they copy the new iDrive 8 infotainment system at least they will have something new in their vehicles. Mazda is lacking in innovation
If I were driving terrain like this, I’d have much more appropriate tires which would make all the difference.
Tires won’t prevent that awd system from overheating. That happened way too quickly.

Thanks for watching, and thanks for keeping it real 🤟

Great point!
MUCH MUCH better outcome than the old CX9!!
u guys r bestt and reviews are solid and raw
Are you still experiencing the odd transmissions/vibrations you mentioned in your previous video?
Yes we did, this episode was filmed in the same week as the road test, and upcoming technical deep dive. But at low speeds the vibrations were not present.
Bummer. Hopefully that will get addressed quickly. I’m trying to convince a friends parents to test drive the CX-90
Which do you think is better that pathfinder at the back or cx90?
I'm shocked how easily the AWD overheated ...
When it is on normal mode, is awd active?
On Snowy highway, what mode should be used? I use off road mode. Is it right? 😅 mine is cx90 mhev

Does the awd provide more traction in wet slippery road conditions?
Yes, it is designed for slippery pavement environments, and excels in wet or snowy climates.
Put my name in for the BBQ grill. Y’all are on the hill already loving this video. Let’s go 😊 up that hill guys.
Not sure if you mentioned but when offroad mode, you need to turn off Traction Control for the system to work best.
Yes, we used both on and off here.
The lack of momentum is a huge factor. I understand the approach angle and not damaging the car but many of these trails you need more momentum
Oh absolutely. We are running them slow on purpose to test traction aids and mechanical grip. On a normal trail ride, we would go with momentum as long as approach and break over angles would allow it.
We are ALL IN!! To the Hill!!!
ZOOM-ZOOM! Also that grill looks dope!
Agreed, the new corporate nose ain't bad.
Finally an off-road test with the Mazda..LOL. Good luck!
Thanks! 👍
That’s a big car but at least it made it up the bypass
Amen, a car that size in FWD would not have clawed its way up the bypass.
Love the hill test!
It's better with Canadiens! -Craig
Well done
Does well for it's size
Mazda need to produce a 4WD which is a hybrid of the CX-90/CX-60 with the BT-50. Now that would be an awesome vehicle! Mazda are amazing cars.
Now that sounds like fun! We would be first in line asking to drive if so.
why do Mazda use this self made 8 speed gearbox when the best automatic in the world is the zf 8 speed?...so many manufactures use it...Bentley and RR use it...BMW...ect...just use that...
Good luck Mazda!
Try it on the beach sand ?
Would love to see this test with off road tires or atleast more grippy all seasons. This is why I love my subaru forester
yeah the tires that it comes off the lot with are trash.
Really thanksful makes this video helping me escape away from the the CX-90🎉❤
I WANT THE SKOTTI GRILL FROM THE RAINFOREST OF NORTH TEXAS‼️COUNT ME IN‼️🦅🔥🗣️
Ill give the grill give-away a go. Also, anyone know if mazda is gonna update the cx-50 (maybe a hybrid option)?
Cx-50 hybrid was supposed to be already announced but they're having trouble staffing the Alabama plant where the cx-50 is made. The announcement is supposed to be delayed until q4 this year with deliveries starting shortly after. @@AbgarMusayelyan thank you for the info!
Nice to see but I would not put my Turbo S PP off road. To pretty of a car and needs TLC.
Good thing they make atvs and cars and not just one or the other don’t think I’ll be taking my CX 90 off roading at any point
If it had tires better suited for the task it could handle alot more
Cool skotti grill 🔥🏕️
This vehicle is meant for sport touring not off roading, just on ground clearance and tires alone. That warning chime is so annoying lol. Still a nice Japanese alternative to the BMW variant.
رجت مشكلة cx9 2017 🥴
Too bad the interior space is really bad 3rd row seats space is really really bad, too bad because that's a deal breaker for some like my self, I really liked the exterior and interior design :(

Totally, we tested that as well in our road test. We also test nearly all SUV/Truck/CUV's vehicles on our off road test for objectivity.
I might need to stick to the Honda Pilot if you want a 3 row mid-size SUV with an actually useful AWD. This mazda looks to be great for tarmac, and that's about it.
And to be fair, that is what it's designed for.
I could do that trail in my Mazda Miata
Please bring it out, I want to film it.
Why not just put this body on a frame, add a rear locking differential and a 4wD case with 17 inch rims and some 32 inch AT tires? You’d have an SUV that would compete with a 4Runner.
Dissapointed that Mazdas AWD system sucks. They’re one of the best City and Highway Crossover SUV though.
they do got a off roader
For the price you pay for this get a a lx460 or 570 a used one
We've hacked the system!
Next time try the easier path first with AWD and than try the harder path ...
They didn’t do enough with the exterior for this refresh. The entire backend looks terrible.
So first we hear how a “2WD vehicle wouldn’t even make it to the obstacle” followed by a 2WD vehicle making it right up to and over the obstacle with no problem.” Maybe time for a tougher obstacle.

Lmao, this thing is a minivan, but it just doesn't have sliding doors, that's all.
What minivans have an inline6 with a rear bias drivetrain?
BBQ Grilling mazda
cx9 would make it, in reverse
Heck yeah, R mode for the win! We tested the cx9 earlier this year, it did pretty good.
What a disappointment. Cant even go up that short hill.. ok cx90 not for me
This is exactly what the cx90 is NOT built for! I have a CX 9 and it's more like a good sized sports wagon like an Audi all road....I tow a Fully enclosed 2 snowmobile trailer in The worst possible conditions tires make more of a difference than AWD systems!! Absolutely true! We test anything that is a CUV, SUV, or Truck on this same hill test for comparative purposes. Yes, even the cx9!
Disappointed Mazda now uses the same junk awd system that overheats in other cars
Cx-50 would be much better
This is a city SUV. Waste of time trying to tackle Africa in this
If it has an Off Road Mode, we are going to test it.
Almost a CVT likething-- CRAP.. they have screwed this car up royally.

Weak sauce. I'll take this off the list.
