I bought a 2019 Tiguan from the Murray Toyota and saw you there filming the Prius video Ben. I’m a 1st time VW owner and I genuinely love the Tiguan. It’s a great car, over performs compared to what VW says the average mpg number are
I have a 2020 Tiguan Premium R-line, so for so good no complaints 👍🏾👍🏾..........I really really really hope they come out with a GLI or GTI edition 🙏🏾🙏🏾
they're nice.. i owned a couple GTIs awhile back, 96 and a 03. was really impressed how quality built the interiors were, and the 03 interior was really tight. never a rattle, so i can imagine the Tiguans are even better. VW makes some good stuff! ☮
I appreciate the detail in these vids... what a great service for those of us who aren't taking the time to do our own in-person... really beneficial. now, if we could get this gentleman to slow down his narration just a tad...
368 thousand km mileage of my Tiguan 2018, no problem. What do you say? There is no secret - only timely maintenance. Toyota Rav4 drove 150 thousand km, the engine started pounding. Box Aisin Toyota Camry mileage 97 thousand km dealer's verdict - not subject to repair, only replacement.😂😂😂😂
I don't like the look versus the Taos. Also does the second row seats recline? I like that the Honda CR-V back seats recline, but when my youngest falls asleep in his car seat I don't like how his neck hangs so I like the reclining seat option so I don't have to worry about that. It's really the only thing I liked about the Honda CR-V they filled it up with a bunch of crap and not practical beneficial features. Also looks like the vw has the side camera which Honda got rid off.
I owned a 2018 for 4 years. It only has 184hp and after awhile that got to me. Very slow merging and passing. Maybe fine for the segment but not for me.
It's sort of an in-betweener size-wize. Does it make sense as a 3 row, or should folks just step up to an Atlas at that point? Where would you rate the Tiguans' drive compared to the RAV4 or Highlander? CX-5, CX-50, CX-9?
When it comes to the drive of an SUV. I'm sorry but nothing compares to Mazda. I've driven them all and Mazda is the king. I don't even own a Mazda because the cx 9 cargo space is lacking but it was definitely the most fun to drive.
VW builds a performance Tiguan R (not to be confused with the R-Line), with the 300hp engine from the Golf R. But its the short wheel base which is not imported to the U.S. There are rumors the updated 2024 Tiguan R may come to the U.S. If it does, I'd buy it in a minute. Of course, if it does, I'm sure people will then whine that is has poor fuel economy or costs too much. Speaking of sticker shock, has anybody checked out the price on a new RAV4 Prime Hybrid lately? Would you believe its 50k?
It's the same engine EA888 that goes into GTI, R and many other VW models. It's just detuned with a small turbo. You can easily do APR Stage 1 ECU tune and get GTI power without any part swap. Stage 3 will get you to R power.
@@zedzedski7382 I knew you/somebody was going to say that. The problem with your logic, however, is that once you start down that road there is no limit since you can always add on more stuff. In fact, put two V4s together, and now you have a W8. Do you still consider it "the same engine?"
I bought a Tiguan R 320hp/,400Nm Black edition 21" wheels..& really quick wagon..so practical ,with performance. Good value,as 40k + more for equivalent Audi,Maccan,Range Rover..who don't have as much power,handling
In my Tiguan R I get as low as 7.6litres/ 100 on trip at steady 100 on cruise control. Or on Race mode pushing it,,9.5lt/100. So not bad for a 320hl SUV..& I'm loving the wagon
Volkswagen's fortune in America was built on unquestionable reliability and a toughness with which other car manufacturers could not compete. The original Beetle and the Super Beetle were unmatched in "fun to drive," and attention to detail. Almost all my friends learned how to operate a manual transmission on a VW Beetle.
Chip shortage has caused it to be deleted on most trims in US, and this car would have a credit on the sticker for the delete. The base S here in US does not come with it standard.
i feel like its a very heavy veichle or maybe i just have a light foot not sure i only drove 4 times in my entire life because of my age 😂 i drove this in germany and i put my foot on the gas behind a coca cola factory and it just didnt wanna go it didnt wanna move it was like i was dragging it forcefuly or maybe i didnt press hard enough? not sure
Build quality (fit and finish, material choices) is definitely better. But that is all perceived quality. Drive them beyond 60,000 miles and true quality is unveiled. Which by the way is reliability factor, which is different than "quality".
@@deborahharewood4566 very much worse. But VW fan boys don't see it that way. If you talk to an original VW/Audi owner with an older car, and ask them what work they had to do. I drive a Tiguan for work, so I spend hours in it every day. I've grown to hate the car. The buttons are confusing and unintuitive (especially on the steering wheel) I still get confused why some of the buttons for lights are pressed in for them to be on while others are off in the in position. Speaking of lights, I keep gear in the back that I need to get to at night. There's no freaking roof light back there! The lights are on the sides which are covered by anything that is placed back there! Stupid! I have to use my phone's flashlight. The seats are horrible! They are stiff and cause back-pain after about 40 minutes of driving. This is not a good road trip car. The infotainment touch screen is slow. With that said, the car does drive well and has good visibility. It confidently handles inclement weather like rain and snow.
Never been a fan of over-rated Toyota's? VW's have a sense of class, just of a more fun experience to drive, that not many JDM's can match? I loved my 99' VR6 Jetta? German cars are what Japan tries to emulate, but they can't, no matter how hard they copy everyone else?
Americans are funny as always, and believe in the statistics they are fed.I have a Tiguan 130 thousand km passed, my neighbor Skoda Kodiak (the same Tiguan) 400 thousand km. All without breakdowns, just timely maintenance. Your Honda, Toyota will fall apart before it passes that much.
4 years and 50k miles for a VW that will break down? Really? Even american crap brands offer 3year/36k-5year/60k warranty and VW statement that people prefer maintenance over warranty is crazy. I rather give up two $200 worth os maintenance for thousands of dollars in repairs.
I remember back in late 90's and aught's when VW had beautiful interiors with actual colors... not anymore, lots of black, hard, cheap, creaky plastics now.
Ok, check out after 5 Canadian winters 🙂 RAV4 will be rusted. Oh, btw, there is a Class Action Lawsuit for RAV4 here in Canada because of a 1 year old RAV4 rusting on certain parts that causes electrical malfunction and sets the car on fire. I'm sorry, but the last gen RAV4 is not what it used to be. Take off those fanboy glasses and just do a quick research for recalls and class action lawsuits that Toyota has now.
Not better, different. It all depends on what you want from your car: reliability, fuel economy, performance, etc. Each does something the other does not,.
That's an Antique SUV and is also a gas hog. Not feature rich nor luxurious compared to new SUVs. Literally the same platform from a decade ago. Absolutely not worth it.
VW aren’t reliable to begin with from personal experience of owning 3 of them, Touareg 4.2 , Passat 2.8 and Passat 1.8T . The issues stopped as soon as I stopped buying VW , let others buy them
Just as any car brand there are good models and bad models. You unfortunately picked all 3 bad models. EA888 3rd generation engine is very reliable, Haldex 5th generation is very reliable and Tiguan and some other models in North America come with an AISIN AWF8F35 transmission, which is a Lexus/Toyota transmission originally made for Lexus RX and now is fitted to a lot of brands like VW, BMW, Opel, Peugeot, Jaguar and more. Also, depends which years you had. VW has significantly improved after 2010 and especially when they launched MQB platform.
Way underpowered and engines are horrible ! It’s in my opinion just a lower grade of a Audi . So much plastic , cheap and fake exhaust tips , really ???my Daughter had one and traded it in for a Lexus and is super quality hands down
Everything in this class has a similar power to weight ratio standard, ~180 hp for 3500 lbs. The Tiguan has the advantage of not having a CVT, so acceleration isn't limited to protect the transmission. The downside of the Tiguan is no optional engine with more power.
I love the Volkswagen Tiguan I got a 2018 one it’s so amazing and smart it literally tells me anytime something is wrong such a great vehicle

I was looking for a good Tiguan comfort line for the whole last week and picked one up last weekend!
I have a 2020 Tiguan Premium R-line, so for so good no complaints 👍🏾👍🏾..........I really really really hope they come out with a GLI or GTI edition 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Love my 2020 Jetta! No issues at all so far. Very nice build quality!
Great review Ben, as always! I have to say it’s a little disappointing that VW won’t give the SEL R line the same black appearance package

Normal transmissions makes cars feel so much faster. My dad has a '14 Nissan Murano that has a CVT and it feels so slow even though it has 260 hp.
I appreciate the detail in these vids... what a great service for those of us who aren't taking the time to do our own in-person... really beneficial. now, if we could get this gentleman to slow down his narration just a tad...
Couple of more months and the all black R Line is mine 🤤
I choose the Tiguan over the Rav4 because the Rav4 drove more like a "contruction" truck + the RAV4 has an old fashioned, cluncky infotainment system!
Thank you for the review, Ben. Do they sell Tiguan pluggin hybrid model in north america?
This is the only Volkswagen I will buy Ben.
What about atlas?
Same for most people. Which is why its VWs best selling model.

Regarding the transmission. It is a dual clutch automatic isn’t it? Torque converter transmissions are entirely different
No DCT 8 speed Aisen transmission
I hear they are expensive to maintain. Is that true
