  • Short video talking about the merits and applications of exoskeletons and power armor. Power armor can be seen everywhere in scifi, from Warhammer 40k and Halo, to District 9 and Fallout. It certainly has its uses, but in the ways that people usually think.

The one thing you always forget that the soldiers are still human and don’t respond well to wearing/ carrying heavy armor/ equipment. Ex-Soldiers have said that they don’t want power armor and that it’s a terrible idea but that exoskeletons wouldn’t be too bad.

Put 10 dudes in power armour outside a big ammo dump and no one wants to go there....

why are you suppressing food from the public Artillery is useless, it hasn't kept up with modern times since in a realistic scenario a ground attack aircraft would most likely obliterate it, and having AA emplacements to protect it or hiding it carefully isn't going to work out since various types of detection exist. Artillery now is to suppress far inferior enemies with cheap expenses.
The only derivative is the Motar since it isn't cumbersome and is far flexible in where it can be deployed.

I disagree with the armor on the exoskeleton part. Rifle rated armor can get light as hell, even today. 10” x 12” uhmwpe(ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) armor plates only weigh about 3 lbs. You could probably cover most of the body with armor and only have it weigh about 30lbs. For a regular soldier, that armor impedes mobility and 20 extra lbs is a lot, but with an exoskeleton that weight and mobility decrease could be completely neglected.

    • @RokkitGrrl

Well, we are talking about a space fairing race, 500 yrs in the future which didn't developed their technology beyond ours, considering the humans in Halo lore practically stagnated in 2050 but somehow developed fusion energy and faster than light speed, because nowdays we are developing caseless rounds, 2D materials, we have some active protection and other things which somehow are way more advanced than what they have, it's not wildly available but I guess most of it will be in the next 30 years or so, they only exception is the faster than light travel and everything related to it and the Spartan project itself, which indeed it's far more advanced, but it is somehow explained in the lore that the UNSC wasn't actually a military force as much as it was a colonial and space lane peace keeping force (more likely enforcer, but ok), so they are somehow forced to use dated weaponry to cut costs and prevent escalation, and for what it seems it's reasonable functional for the intended use, untill the covenant arrive, by the time they didn't had the possibility upgrade their military doctrine and industry so they used what they had in hands until the end when they came with the infinity class ship and other things more in line with the time period.

Power armour, or atleast some kind of exoskeleton based suit, could also be used to increase soldier's mobility and deployment potential.
A power armoured infantry man would tire much slower than a normal human, be capable of jumping far higher and surviving falls from greater heights, operate in environments that currently require far too heavy equipment to be worth it, lift/avoid/smash trought obstructing materials and possibly even just move faster. Maybe not car speed fast, more like between sustained jogging fast and Usain Bolt fast, but it would still be an improvement.
For faster speed without seriously breaking something cybernetically enhanced or genetically engineered Space Marines such as I, Cato Sicarius, ex-Captain of the second Ultramarine company, Master of the Watch, Knight Champion of Macragge, Grand Duke of Talassar, High Suzerain of Ultramar, Primaris Marine, commander of the Primarch Guilliman Victrix Guard, Guilliman student, possible next Chapter Master and possible heir to the title of Lord Regent (the last two are highly heretical speculations done by other people), would be needed.

Short answer: It depends if it's practical or not.
Long answer: There are a variety of factors such as power supplies, internal safety, affordability, training, power to weight ratios, effectiveness compared to the same price's worth of other troops, weapon carrying capacity, protection and implementation of a tactical and strategic level. Just as some tanks are practical and others aren't, so too are some types of power armour. They also offer benefits that go beyond stats on paper such as morale boosts when paraded in friendly cities, ease of use as heavy lifting tools behind lines and so on. Also, training someone to use power armour would be easier than training them to use a tank since it mostly revolves around motions they're already experienced with.

There are actually a few major disadvantages you overlooked with power armour.
A suit of power armour would make it very difficult to treat a wounded soldier. If an operator was hit by a round that successfully penetrated his/her suit, a medic would have to first remove the victim from the suit before the wound(s) can even be operated on. This would waste valuable time, as the victim is at risk of bleeding out.
A suit of power armour would also suffer the problem of reliability that you mentioned with mechs. There are a lot of complex parts that make up the suit, which would make it prone to malfunctions. What if the suit locks up while the user is inside it? What if an EMP goes off nearby?

    • @Alpostpone

But they are solution to those problem, the armor itself could give first aid, we already used self healing material for helicopter rotor, so a sealant that automatically seal the wound on breach is in the realm of pssibility.
We also can't make realistic guess on the reliability because we actually have no idea what technology or part will be used, for example an artificial, we have no idea how futur artificial muscle will look and how hard they will be to maintain change and how reliable they will be, hey futur vehicle could even be even to look like living organism, with a lot of complex part that are not that reliable, but redundant and constantly repaired and maintained by fleet of small robot. A tank could cicatrise damage or even get sick.

@@benjamin1359870 Self sealants are not self repairs. They just plug holes. It will not fix the actual damage. It also will not fix internal bleeding. This requires human intervention. ua-cam.com/video/9esCA8_EPeY/v-deo.html
Of course that would require a lot more moving parts to complicate the suit, and what do you do when the suit cannot open due to a malfunction? Oh, but technology will just get better and better. First of all, how would it get better? And second, would this argument not apply to Spookston's criticisms of mechs?

@@xxfalconarasxx5659 Yeah they plug hole, if you plug an hole that someone have. It stop bleeding, the sealant is for the men not the armor. If the armor is the one giving the first aid, you don't need armor to be easy to remove for medic. They are also way to make armor that quickly disassemble it self, modern plate carrier have a simple cable that you need to pull out that completely disassemble the plate carrier you could simply make something similar maybe with small explosive, there is also the strong possibility that everything capable of piercing the armor will always kill the wearer. You don't need to think about making the armor easy to remove, if 99% of people that get their armor pierced die.
Not it might not, artificial muscle are more complex, but they don't really have more moving part it's a whole new paradigm different than how traditionally create and exploit mechanical forces. A human being is more complex than any machine we have either build and yet it is extremely reliable.

Exosuits have been out of the experimental phase and pushed into the prototype phase in field applications already for military use. Within the next decade or less we will likely see it in different applications involving special forces as standard issue for these specialized groups. Their benefits won't come how we see it in scifi as these suits that turn the wearers into near robot/cyborgs though. The three focuses they will revolve around are endurance, enhanced strength and stability, and physical redundancy. The first will enable movement, even in rough terrain to be enhanced significantly and when combined with individuals in the military that are already trained and condition to do this means more drop point options without worrying about troop fatigue, especially when carrying heavy weapons and the supply packs. Which brings us to the second point, heavy weapons and supplies. Right now it is not practical for every troop to carry something like a SAW or dare I say larger weapons too. They are large, unwieldy, and takes conditioning that most are not familiar with as they carry their light m16/m4's around. However the suit would eliminate that problem and enable larger weapons, thus more firepower, to be the standard and not a specialist functioning as a force multiplier among the squad. And since you will not be feeling the weight of the large packs carried by military the same way as before, you can carry better and more supplies allowing longer field time. Lastly, if a troop is wounded, with practical field medic work they can still function relatively efficiently where as before, they might slow things down and even become a liability as they might otherwise not be able to move. If you are shot in the leg for example, you might need to be carried or you will be limping with a makeshift crutch, or have a dangerous stop gap measure that makes movement difficult, scenarios like that would be mitigated now. I will note what we have do offers better protection to be used than standard kevlar vests, they are not made to turn you into a walking tank.
So while it might be a very long time out before we get armor and suits that are meant for melee combat enhancement and offering troops protections comparable to armored vehicles, the other practical uses for them are there and we do have different powering mechanisms that can support such functionality. Right now it is determining the durability of said power sources in the field that is the biggest issue, not the power being supplied from the sources we have chosen to use.

Now that I think about it, it’s really starting to occur to me how different Power Armor is now in Fallout than it was in the earlier games, having gone from high tech armor like that of Halo, to more like human sized mechs.

"it wouldnt make them compleatly bulletproof so there is no point for infantry to wear this." WHAT??
having a suit that gives you more lifting capabilitys; stamina and armor that "only" increases your survivability by a relatively small margine sounds like an amazing deal to me (any ex/serving infantry men out there that would say no to a bit extra protection??)
hell you say so yourself later in the vid when it comes to the combat engeneers. why would the infantrist be less gratefull for the extra protection?
    2)
not only would extra carrying capacety allow heavy weapon squads to carry and fire much heavier guns at a much increased accuracy (recoil compensation of the armor) it also opens up the possibility of shield soldiers (you know guys lugging around shields strong enough to stop common infantry firearms and protect those behind them?)

So basically Fallout got the use pretty much spot on.
Before the nukes dropped United States employed power armor troops as infantry equivalent of a breakthrough tank- a hardened steel spear tip to punch through a gap and let the regular infantry pour in. Basically what tanks do, but on a smaller scale and allows you to do it in places tanks couldn't ever hope to get to.
They also equipped combat engineers and such for the protection it gives while dealing with explosives without hindering dexterity.
And bc the power armor offered significant protection against A.B.C. exposure, power armor troops were able to conduct operations in heavily contaminated areas without risk of casualties.

Even if power armor is iterated upon to the point where it becomes immune to most small arms fire, I still think the most likely direct combat use for it will be specialized forces, especially those who rely on esoteric means of transport (SDV, airborne, etc). A big problem with airborne troops (and to some extent SDV-borne troops as well) is their inability to carry heavy ordinance, which makes them reliant on ground forces for backup if they come up against armor or entrenched infantry. Heliborne infantry gets around this in conventional warfare by virtue of helicopter gunships and general fire support from their transports, but in COIN ops helicopters are very vulnerable to small arms fire and entrenched/hidden infantry firing RPGs. Helis can't kill something if they can't see it, and generally if they see it it's too late.
Therefore, giving specialized infantry power armor allows them to carry greater quantities of ammunition and more ordinance while retaining the nuance available to ground troops. Less collateral damage and greater psychological impact on the enemy are two especially important effects for COIN ops specifically. In effect, late-generation power armor will give traditionally "light" infantry the power of an IFV spread out across an entire squad with the ability to clear buildings and limit civilian casualties while doing so

The common problem about these "practical" arguments is that we all judge how "practical" these techs are base on our current techology. Like this thing weighs too much that thing consumes too much power etc. We're making the same mistake people in the past made. The French didn't think airplane would play a significant role in warfare and they got anihilated by the Luftwaffe. The German invented jet engine but didn't think they're practical until it was too late. Now we have jet fighter flying 3 times the speed of sound. You can't really predict what the future, so these kind of arguments are kinda pointless

    • @Predator20357
      @Predator20357 4 роки тому

I sort of agree with your statement but The French has a huge “do what we did last time” syndrome. These are the guys that thought tanks can’t go through wooden areas. German jet planes although would be superior to Allied aircrafts, they still wouldn’t have been practical to use even if they used them earlier as they are going to need rare materials and will also use up oil which Germany lacked. There is a big difference between ability to make them effective and cost to make them. You can’t predict the future but you still need to know where you are at. Trying to brush off practical problems with “Oh we COULD be able to make a breakthrough because there were two instances of countries trying to think practically and it didn’t work for them” is blind optimism. Be optimistic about things but be realistic.

One major advantage a powered exoskeleton could offer for infantry is stabilized mounting for heavier automatic weapons, or weapons with specialized roles that tend to be more taxing on the carrier (like AT).

    Modern ANN's (
artificial neural networks) are already quite good at recognizing faces and possible dangers an enemy combatant may provide (like a weapon in his hands). And they're able to do such things way, way faster than human brain can. Combine this with a good camera/sensor array, and someday "smart" power armor will probably be able to save its operator's life by forcefully moving his body away from danger zone even before the operator can realise anything. In fact, "smart" power armor models made in future specifically for war purposes could include assisted aiming and/or compensated shooting too. "Best" case scenario, you just push a button to make your power armor go in a "paranoid mode", then continue walking forward, and your gun snaps to the enemy position right when he shows himself... you just have to consciously take responsibility and pull the gun trigger.
Powered armor may include built-in defence from all kinds of things non-power-armored soldier may struggle with: gas-filtering, instant eye shader protectors from flashbangs, noise dampener. Regular soldier may or may not have such defence options too, but he will waste precious time applying them on himself.
Also, increased mobility. There are a lot of types of power armor in fiction, but some may include options, not available for a combatant, who doesn't have this power armor in question. Wheeled boots, Integrated climbing tools, zip-line hooks, parachutes, etc. Maybe even serviceable jetpacks.

Depending on the power armor what's mentioned in the video applys only to certain degrees. Fallout style power armor would act as is said (slower and less dexterous, but extremely tough) however if the power armor only offers a minor loss in speed and/or dexterity but a relatively large amount of protection (100-200 bullet resistance, so it can take aproximately 200 standard issue rifle rounds before one hits the wearer) the it simply becomes standard infantry equipment. It's just better than the standard infantry armor, and so is given to infantry to perform all the tasks they do nowadays.

another benefit would be the secondary effect on ennemies.
if a certain amount of your infantry do use power-armors with good overall level of protection, it will force the ennemy troops to either increase the amount of penetrating ammunition in their dotation, or either scale-up their calibers (wich, in both case, will force them to deal with a lot of additionnal issues, such as cost, total ammo load, logistics, etc...).

me and some guys actually discussed power armor practicality. we said that it'll be mostly used in urban combat where everything is close range enough that vehicles and artillery can't enter the picture, and also bomb defusal, though we didn't talk about it being used in riot control.
the other thing we talked about is the materials used to make the actual armor, and someone mentioned something called "Ethylene armor" which he said quote "makes a .50 look like a 9mm". I don't know how true that is, but someone else also said that steel alloys are better than titanium alloys. someone else also said, "Put tiles between layers of fiber glass and resin +some good padding and exoskeletal support and you can take 7.62 to the chest withtouth feeling it".
another thing was how the armor would be powered, though this discussion didn't go very far. two options were brought up for power: miniature nuclear reactors, or a kind of battery that can hold a lot of charge, while being small and compact enough to not weigh the user down. It'd be nice if it were also safe enough to not explode violently if it were to get damaged, but another person said it was not likely to be the case. They suggested the battery could be mounted on the back of the armor like blowout panels on tanks so the explosion would not hurt the wearer of the armor, but anyone unarmored behind the guy is probably gonna eat the explosion, sadly.

I see power armour as a way of improving the stealth capabilities of a dismounted soldier. It can provide a platform for mounting colour and temperature changing panels to provide visual, and infrared stealth capabilities. However the cost effectiveness of that sort of tool is limited, and would only be used by special operators, and possibly mountain/alpine soldiers.

Having a exoskeleton that would allow you to carry a bit heavier armor/gear/ammo than currently, would be a great a benefit. It doesn't have to be some ridiculous amount like on video games, instead having the current level of armor cover larger area of the wearer than today. That would already be very useful in urban warfare in addition to the endurance benefits. Dexterity doesn't necessarily have to decrease at all. In fact, if the exoskeleton takes more weight off the wearer, it's going to improve. With such kit you would be able to do something very simple like keep up your firearm for hours without getting your arms tired, not to mention the decrease on recoil. From personal experience I can assure you that you are not very dexterious under the current 20~30kg of kit. And it would also be useful elsewhere if there was way to power that armor for a longer period. Mechanized infantry could charge their armor when sitting on their vehicle.

With the power requirements being in the range of multiple *KILOWATTS* to have even a decent amount of added strength, nuclear batteries are literally the only way that these requirements can be met without having to have a huge, heavy battery that needs to be recharged every couple hours. Power armor has little issues preventing it from becoming a reality otherwise, the servo technology is there as seen with compact PMSMs and axial flux motors that can produce torques in excess of 900 NM at extremely small sizes, with the only caveat being incredibly high power consumption.

That increased carry capacity and endurance brings up an interesting question: can oversized weapons become practical when using, and potentially necessary against, exoskeletons and powered armor.
I'm thinking mainly in the department of "Using a 30mm Mk108 aircraft autocannon like an automatic rifle." Sort of thing. If your armor + power source + exoskeleton is 250 kg or something, and lets you deal with recoil more effectively, you may have the ability to wield some pretty crazy weapons. 2nd is that power armor, even with no especially advanced armor tech, could very likely stop anything in the 5-8mm rifle round category that isn't some sort of miniaturized HEAT or APFSDS round. And could probably stop 14.5mm blacktip in all but the weakest parts of the arbor even if it's just steel. But it won't be just steel. The stuff is bulky enough to possibly justify the use of a complex mix of ceramics, glass, steel, kevlar anti-spall liner, depleted Uranium or tungsten, and potentially even graphene, diamond-like material, or carbon nanotubes. Overall, that will give at least twice the protection per mass of steel with up to 10x for something like graphene.

Power armor is basically a motorized armor. The whole point is to be able to put what compares to vehicle armor, on a soldier. But, like any motorization process, you could also have powered soldiers carrying vehicle weapons and using them. Or allowing them to sorta "become" vehicles themselves. As an example, space suits are just that, once you had that little unit with cold gas thrusters.

If there’s a suit on board, one of the other crew could don it and lift it off, potentially saving the guy’s life. The powered soldier can also draw fire away from the rest of the crew while they await backup.
Like I said in the previous video, powered suits are good because they supplement current military hardware rather than compete against it like mechs do.

In XCOM, the logic behind power armor was “We have been repurposing the alien’s energy cells, now we can use it to power a suit with more protection than conventional armor” which is how the Aegis and Titan suits are made. In practice XCOM uses it for the purpose of breaching and CQB like you mention, like assaulting a UFO or a building filled with aliens. Due to the way the game’s AI works, aliens tend to shoot at operatives most vulnerable to being hit, so players exploit that by adding abilities and items boosting the soldier’s damage resistance - aka tanking.

One thing I've never gotten is the idea that you would be "faster" in power armor, like Space Marines or Spartans. Just because a suit is capable of managing high speeds doesn't mean that the person inside can suddenly develop enough endurance to keep those speeds. The suit could move so fast it risks exhausting or worse crippling or killing the operator. It's why I like the way power armor works in starship troopers. Rather than making a suit that runs faster, it amplifies strength so less energy is exerted but a greater distance is covered because mobile infantry jump rather than run. A short bursts of strength to push off the ground, complimented by thrusters for speed and control seems like a much better way to improve mobility than a suit that runs really fast.

Well with space marines it's more the armor makes them stronger not faster. They are already stupidly fast enough anyways. But there is characters that modified armor that automatically does actions like aiming for them. Fabius was one such character where he just decides where to move and pulling the trigger, the armor handles the rest. I guess the spartan thing also makes sense in part but movement by thought doesn't help that much as reaction time is really the biggest factor to me. Besides, if the armor makes the spartan that much better I don't see why they don't just take out the meat, make a robot and stick an AI in there.
