Have you had to replace any of the legs or the neck yet or still going on original. I am looking at getting one around October for a class project and a pet.
januar324 Everything still running 100% so far... but I have regularly dismantled, cleaned and relubricated all his gearboxes with PTFE oil since warranty expired, and this keeps the gearboxes in excellent shape :) What model will you get?
Thanks for that. I have been worried because the AIBOS are not made any more and I don't want to spend the money for it to die right away. I think I will get a ERS-210 soon and then try and get a ERS-7 later in the year or early 2016.
He still runs perfectly. The gearboxes have been dismantled, cleaned and rebuilt, and also his Li-Ion battery has been rebuilt with new cells, so he should be fine for many more years to come.

The cells used in the battery are easily available... you just need a specialist battery engineer to replace them inside the package. It needs to be done while keeping power to the battery protection circuit. :)
These batteries are trickier than most li-ions to re-cell, but the part about needing to keep power to protection circuitry is incorrect - there is zero harm in removing power from it. The battery will appear dead when the new cells are connected, but all you have to do is manually re-latch the MOSFET. Keeping it powered up while replacing the cells actually presents a much higher risk of damaging components on the board or blowing the main fuse. The only reason I could see someone leaving power to it would be if they are not very familiar with how these batteries work (and in turn probably shouldn't be rebuilding them haha). If they kept power to the board I can pretty much guarantee they also didn't dump/edit/reprogram the EEPROM to match the capacity of the new cells, which causes worse performance and can lead to safety issues down the road. I've seen poorly rebuilt Aibo batteries get hot enough to start melting their plastic casing before.
I remember this is the one built into Mind 3 software and you can choose three different game/dance 'profiles'?? I will check though. I have to make up to date video soon as I rebuilt battery with new Li-Ion cells. :)
I think it depends on the individual? I've had this AIBO since 2006 and he still gets played/tinkered with regularly. :)

AIBOs in particular have a wide scope for programming because of the operating system and that you can write code and use the sensors using R-CODE...
