You can tell you liked that one! It comes to an abrupt end as the end is intermingled with the start of Love Of My Life. Would be great if you could react to that studio version of that one then have a listen to them both together and you will see that its difficult to find where one song ends & the other one starts. 12 minutes of music magic.

My first album I ever purchased as a kid was Night at the Opera. Wore the first side out! Didn’t give the second side much of a chance back then. Later, in college years, a friend had it on in his dorm room, speakers in opposite corners. I heard THIS SONG, and went out and bought every Queen album that existed! Love the stereo tricks they did in the studio!

Roy Thomas Baker added regarding Mercury's vocal: "He starts off singing in the center, and then the first delay starts to the left, then the second delay goes to the right, then he can sing and make 3-part harmonies just by harmonizing with himself as it comes back around into his headphones.
The delay was done by using two stereo Studer machines - they were still running the tape from one reel to the other the way you'd normally run a tape machine, whereas you run it from one reel through and then off the machine and then straight to a different machine, and then playing back on a different machine, so the tape would actually be laying across the room. There were a few chairs and lamps and coat hooks around that we hooked it over until we ended up with the right delay. He had to perform it live, so it's being performed live with the delays in his headphones and he could hear it so he could sing along with it and then harmonize with the vocals when it came back to him."
    This is fascinating

You have no idea how complex this was to record the analog effect. There were no computers or effect-machines back then ... This is handmade! Recorded on one tape and back-played directly into the next tape-machine recording both tracks and playing it on the next wich records it as well, etc. The tapes went thorugh the whole studio over chairs and stuff to get the right delay-timing ... ^^+gg ... and the end of the song is actually the intro of the next song.

And today's youth, without meaning to sound mean, don't realise that all those great artists of the 20s to the 70s didn't have digital equipment to make everything sound instantly wonderful or provide effects.
No auto tune and no click tracks.
Over dubbing goes back to the sixties, even before The Beatles with the likes of Silver Apples and Can making very modern sounding music with break beats and layers of overdubs, all done by running around a room with loads of tape recorders and a big ol' loop o'tape!
They inspired The Beatles to introduce such methods while making Sgt. Pepper's.
Brian had originally made his own loop recorder in the early days, converting some existing equipment to extend the time loop and so on, but it was not really roadworthy so something more sturdy was needed, which is also partly what led to the 12 amp stack!

In their album "A Night at the Opera", the ending of "The Prophet's Song" actually segue-ways into "Love of My Life". The piano at the beginning of "Love of My Life" (ANOTHER iconic Queen song) actually seamlessly picks up where the guitar ended in "The Prophet's Song".

The four of them worked so very well together, regardless of the composer. Part of that is that they loved each other as friends, even though their passion led to arguments, but they were creative arguments. Listen to Brian talk about Freddie today, it's usually with a tear in his eye. Nice post, Nemo.

BTW, commented in detail below, but I also wanted to note the importance of HEADPHONES -- on this, Bo-Rap -well, basically EVERYTHING by Queen - now, I've seen reactions where people LOVED the song... but didn't even listen with headphones -- so, yeah - pure musical talent will out - yet... I feel bad for what some of them are missing... you got it enough that you "tripped" - that is Brian's brilliance... (well and Fred et al on vocals...) -- THANK YOU!

The reason so many people haven't heard this masterpiece is that it was on the same album as Bohemian Rhapsody. In my opinion, this is at the least an equal and to my tastes ... better. One of the greatest songs ever written. The lyrics are biblically brilliant and soooo prophetic in these days.

Oh - so sorry to be a "nagging" commenter -- but the very, very end of this song on the album goes straight into "Love of my Life"-- on their early albums, and I'm talkin' vinyl -- there was NO pause between songs... unusual at the time... now that everything is digital, doesn't matter, but back then, it was unique -- (oh, and on the album version of Love of my Life, in addition to guitar and vocals, Brian May played cello -- and HARP --whaaa....??? yep, super-genius!)

    • @grandtheftmanualv945
      @grandtheftmanualv945 4 роки тому +3

I wish there had been more thought put into this when the digital revolution happened, and I mean CDs back in the eighties, because all the songs were separated and for me it ruined Queen II.
I spent a lot of time and money finding a CD player that would allow no gap between tracks!.
It affects Pink Floyd albums too, as well as other prog bands.

Yeah, I enjoy watching your pleasure in this music. I am pretty sure the vocal section is meant to imitate the sound of the great flood. Flood and storm, flood and storm... surging and raging then eventually ending in quiet as the waters recede and a new world begins. If it is not the intended meaning, it certainly fits the apocalyptic nature of such an event.

I also was intrigued by the harmonies - I sing in a choir - always has - and we made a lot of harmonies - of all sorts - always a cappella - the most exciting with 8 different voices - and the most difficult - but never with rhythm like this. Before 1977 it is just him and and the delay and after 1977 it is a delay and harmonizer with 9 overdubs which if even more trippy . That is what you get when you have a mathematician and astrophysicist with IQ of 180 in a band 😮
Brian's masterpiece and Freddie's amazing interpretation. ❤It's really Brian's BohRhap but sadly far less known song because it was never released as a single and just parts of it were played live because of it's complexity (sound delays) ... Not to mention the lyrics 😮 ...

Have you listened to Primus ? Be surprised !
If you think that it's trippy, should have heard it when it first came WHILE tripping !

Can you please stop popping that rap guy up in the middle of a good song 🤔 no need for it , spoils it. But , great you've gone down the rabbit hole of Queen 🥰😍
