After Tiger Woods’ historical win, Fuzzy Zoeller made this comment:
“He did very well... very impressive. The little boy is putting well, driving well... he’s doing everything what it takes to win a tournament. So you know what you should do when he gets here? Pat him on the back, congratulate him, and serve him up fried chicken for next year. Or collard greens for that matter!”
Fuzzy’s career went downhill rapidly after that and it never recovered.
He said "or collard greens, or whatever the hell they serve."
Zoeller joined the Champion's Tour after turning 50 toward the end of 2001 and won the 2002 Senior PGA Championship at Firestone CC in Akron, OH, the oldest senior major, the 2002 Senior Slam, the 2004 MasterCard Championship at Hualalai, HI on the Big Island, and the '08 and '09 Wendy's Champions Skins Game, hardly "never recovered". Don't worry about Fuzzy. His father-in-law was the late Jim "Sunny" Thornton, founder of Thornton Oil, currently Thorntons and ranked in the top 250 on the Forbes list of most valuable privately owned companies, generating $2.5B in annual revenue. Losing his K-Mart and Dunlop endorsements in 1997 were meaningless to his wealth, drops in the bucket. That's why he has always cheerfully whistled all of the time! 😉

Tacos are more what Mexicans eat. When I was in Spain two times, they ate things like Jamon (ham), Pollo con huevos & arroz - Chicken with eggs & rice. Or appetizers like olives. Or most often they do the Tapas - appetizers. Going from one bar to another eating Spanish appetizers. So, hypothetically if Tiger Woods had to invite Sergio Garcia - he would do the Spanish Tapas things. In Barcelona, they also have some good fish & seafood dishes, too.

Any meeting between the two would be a nonstarter. TW is resilient, tough, and doesn't need to meet with Garcia or anyone else. With so much racism rearing up in sports, such a meeting wouldn't resolve anything. Besides, Garcia knew what he was doing. Try speaking of someone you like in a negative sense. It can't be done. I'd hate to have my legacy in golf eclipsed by some nonsensical racist comment, and that's how Garcia will take his place in golf history, not his accomplishments.

Pfftt.. What world do we live in today where everyone is offended at everyone. I'm Asian. I don't know how many times, I've been accused of being an "Asian Driver"...getting lost like an "Asian Driver", etc. These are not racists comments. They are stereotypes. People need to be able to distinguish between the two. This past summer, my daughter was playing with a neighborhood kid (who's black). It was hot outside. So I told my daughter, "Hey...why don't you invite so and so over. I have some watermelon upstairs". My friend, who was there for lunch, looked at me like, "What did you just say?". So I invited a black kid in my neighborhood to come over to have watermelon, which is about the most perfect food you can serve on a hot summer day, and somehow, that's view as racist? Again.....this is the world we live in today.

To make a crack about somebody's nationality is socially acceptable but race is clearly off limits. If Garcia would have said, "We'll serve hamburgers and hot-dogs", it would have been a reference to Tiger's nationality, and thus acceptable. But fried chicken is clearly a reference to Tiger's race, for here in the US that food item is a very common stereotype directed towards blacks.

The remark is racist because of the history in America and the connotation behind it. Being black, we know exactly what people mean when they make comments such as that and its sad because it really is not neccessary. No one is saying Garcia is racist but the comment was very ignorant and stereotypical to say.

I think that's a fair assessment. There's a lotta cultural snobbery within the Spanish speakers of European descent, quite thick in Argentina, too. Very "Europeo" oriented. And watch any telenovela, wherein the cast is usually quite European. I recently watched a move starring Cantinflas, the Charlie Chaplin of Mexico. All the women were quite "European." Take a look at the first president of Mexico. Era indio.

Tacos are a Mexican dish, not a Spanish dish. Sergio is from Spain. They are different countries. Spaniards are White Europeans, and Mexicans are a mixture of Indigenous Indian and White--some are pure Indian.
