    Hello Mycophiles! In today's video I go over my recent practice of casing coir lovers as a means to offset my unmodified shoeboxes from drying out. Doing this has also had the fortunate unforeseen consequence of completely eliminating side/bottom fruits. It has also greatly benefitted my flushes and yield as well.
    I hope you all have a great day or night!

    I ended up casing mine with cvg. Put them in fruiting conditions to early and over misted them. I let them air out but noticed a blueish color on the mycelium. Thought it was contamination but it was not. There are now an insane amount of pinning and its thanks to these videos. Thanks for all you do. It made it all possible.

      One question though. Do you wait till you see primortia before you introduce fruiting conditions? Mine did not have primortia when I put them into fruiting conditions and I thought I may have messed up. You should also do a video about over misting. It apparently caused the mycelium to bruise and I thought it was contamination. It was pretty hard to find that information. It would be a very helpful video considering no one has a video about this. Thanks again. Your one of the very few best out there.

      Thank you! Glad to hear you’re having success. There’s two camps, fruiting at spawn or making a distinction between fruiting and colonizing conditions. I do both on a whim, ultimately either way you’ll get mushrooms. So you didn’t mess anything up other than over misting. But if you were going to grow in 2 phases, then you initiate fruiting conditions when the substrate is fully (or almost fully) colonized.

    Your casing advice continues to rock! Best harvest yet. I was wondering about "re-casing" after a harvest? Any value? Also, if we need to cut vs. pull, any suggestion on managing the "stumps"? Just let them be or is it worth covering them?
    FWIW, I started using a Jiffy / CC blend and it seems to outperform either one individually. I wanted to create a different, but familiar casing for the little shroomies (who the hell knows why), kind of like in nature. That 1st couple inches is in constant flux. Thanks for all you great info!

    Thanks Sage! I've completely changed my ABC fruiting / casing strategy thanks to your experience and perspectives, and I've had the better success than ever. We also have low humidity uo here in the mountains, so hydration is always a challenge. The casing (not just a pseudo-casing :) has made a significant difference. I did have a question regarding the Jiffy Casing. To date I've just used my bulk substrate, but I want to move to Jiffy. Our bags here are bone dry so I'm sure I need to add water...but how much? Q Q Q: What is the target hydration level of the Jiffy? Field cap? And yes, would love a casing layer vid.

    Please do a video on your pasteurization and PH correction of your casing layer. I've gone the bucket tek for pasteurization and have added a little pickling lime to the boiling water to try to PH adjust it, but if there's a recipe (a certain amount of pickling lime to a gallon of distilled water that should always be the right amount for adjusting Jiffy Mix -- since both should have a pretty steady PH level prior to adjusting -- that would be way easier than trying to get accurate PH readings of a casing layer) I'd love to see a video on that.

    • @Mycophilia
      @Mycophilia  10 місяців тому +1

      I just buy jiffy mix seed starting mix to avoid that process, but if I ever decide to make my own casing I’ll make a video on it. Thanks for the suggestion 😊

    • @Jamesim82
      @Jamesim82 10 місяців тому +1

      Do you not have to pasteurize or PH correct Jiffy Mix? If not, I'll just grab some of that. If you do have to pasteurize and/or PH correct Jiffy Mix, and I misunderstood you, a video of that process would be awesome.

    • @Mycophilia
      @Mycophilia  Рік тому

      No, I would not do that as it will require energy to recolonize, and simply wholly unnecessary. I would recommend getting out of the mindset of trying to make a grow last as long as possible, and into a mindset of doing more shorter grows, as you will ultimately make better use of your time and get many more mushrooms that way. The vast majority of your nutrition is already gone after the second flush.

    This last run of oats I did, I allowed to dry for too long. It was 3 days ago that I sterilized them. What should I do to rehydrate? I'm going to use pint jars this time instead of quart. Have been having good results with my quart jars but would really like to speed up my colonization time. So far, the jars with spores colonized just as fast as agar, and my LC is only colonizing slightly faster (think the oats may have been too wet in that instance but not entirely sure).

Sure i got weird slug blobs the first flush and normal mushrooms the second flush. Now i have a Martha tent and i can't get anything to fruit in there. Is it because I'm not getting 100% humidity? I put three coir lovers shoe boxes into FC last week and was getting myc piss. I was trying to give it more FAE but it keeps drying out even though I was misting it. Your other video on fruiting conditions made me realize they were drying out because of my central air. The mycelium looks like it stalled for a few days.
    I applied another pseudo casing layer and put it in my martha tent. The humidifier is on 6 times a day and fan on 4 times a day. Hopefully, I did it right. It looks like the mycelium is colonizing the new casing layer.

      Central air is a bit of a unique problem in that a lot of growers don’t have it. It definitely dries things out and add a lot of FAE. Put it up high and out of air flow, should be better results. Again, each environment is a little different at best so find what works for you. My central air in winter is great for drying but summer is tough all around. 👍🤷‍♂️ Wish you all the success in the world!

      @@mikeinnj4424 thanks! I actually kept the lid on the shoe boxes with it cracked a little bit inside the Martha tent. Maybe this will give it a better environment than leaving it out side the tent.

NOW when it comes to "PE VARIETIES" I DO USE A CASING LAYER If I'm using a "MANURE BASED SUB" to stop "BLOBING", NOW if I'm using CVG or 50/50, I will drop a casing layer if I feel the cake is a little on the dry side. Yeah I have never tried the wax paper Tek to for even pin set. As they said below I have used bubble wrap in the past. But if you get you mositure content right. And run a liner or not, it's up to you. I mean some folks say a liner prevents side pinning, and others say it don't. I like a liner for 2 reasons. (#1) I prefer a liner so when it's time to harvest I have a way to pick up the cake, and keep together. Before anyone saids you don't need a liner. Just float the cake and it rehydrates the cake. Yeah I know but I have had cakes in the past split on me, corners break off on me. I just prefer it to keep my cakes nice. Besides if your mositure content is right. You usually don't need to mist/rehydrate the cake till after second flush. And still I just give the cake a nice heavy misting or pour H20 down the corners of the cakes. (#2) As the cake shrinks it keeps the micro climate for the cake IME also prevents side pins. Focusing everything to the top of the cake for pin sets. But like I said at the beginning of this novel. LoL my bad. To each is own, some say it does prevent, and some say it does not.

    These are called shoebox's because we mushroom people called them that because they are the size of a shoebox.. not because they are actually made for shoes to have FAE. Dafuq

    Once again. "Coir lovers" "grass lovers".

    I saw this dude in an Amazon review using some kind of an Orbeez-tec lol i think he was using the orbeez as a casing layer on some albino PEs to help the top of the substrate retain moisture. What are your thoughts on this? I can send you the video he posted if you're interested

      Not a fan of orbeez, a casing layer maintained properly is much more effective. If your environment is fine, there is absolutely no need for a casing layer, let alone orbeez. Coir lovers grow fine without them, it’s just that in my situation a casing layer helps a lot.

      @Mycophilia Thanks so much for the reply!! I live in a very humid climate already and have my shoeboxes in a confined space so i think a casing layer might not be that necessary for me. I might try it out with a later flush though and test the results. Personally orbeez wouldn't be my first choice either lol
