I appreciate you showing your mistakes, that said, I seen something you can ask your dad as he sounds knowledgeable. I presoaked all of my parts like the bands and steels in trays and let them drip off as it is messy but if your doing several a week like I did, then time kills most shops as they struggle. I made all most all of my tools for alignments insides of clutches and shafts so it just sat together. I made a jig for the transmission case so I could rotate it on my table... no climbing and dropping stuff (it happens and most generally never hurts anything but occasionally a seal will get pinched and there goes the whole build if you don't catch it. I worked for a axle rebuild shop and we also did transmissions and transfer cases. I started building auto transmissions in late fifties and now seventy five. In a bit of time you see yourself building a transmission like this in just a few hours... I forget book time but I could always outrun them.
I worked in a transmission shop when I was younger and if the guy who was supposed to show me how to rebuild a transmission would have done it the way you are explaining it and showing it I might have had more interest and would have stuck with it. Thank you for taking the time to show the work and explaining it. Keep up the good work
Nice step by step instructional video. I've never been brave enough to tackle a transmission job on my own vehicles because of how much stuff is involved. I see you like the Dodge brand most of all. Thanks!
My thoughts exactly. How did they figure out how many check balls to use and where to put them? There is so much going on inside an automatic transmission I can’t wrap my brain around it.
Man I was thinking the same thing about transmissions in general. Trying to avoid a self rebuild to save $. Watching videos and think how did someone figure this out!
I have wanted to see a automatic transmission rebuilt now. I think I will have nightmares over it. I never intended to ever rebuild one. I just wanted to see how they work and they seem quite complicated. It must be real comfort to have your father there to help point a few things out here and there the old two heads are better than one, but I think I will stick to my manual transmissions. Much simpler still watching you from Yuma. Good luck!
Whoever designed the Automatic transmission was either a madman or a genius. Either way, its an invention that sure makes driving easier/lazier. Still enjoy shifting gears in a "Manuel" trans every now and then though! Thanks for this vid Travis, we rarely get to see transmissions getting hot-rodded as the engine is more exciting, but its all part of the process.
Travis when I was still in high school I worked for AAMCO transmission in South Florida as a r&r guy, you went home every night covered in the transmission fluid. I can tell you I was hating my life at that time! So when I see you tearing apart a transmission I can tell you it gives me the heebie-jeebies just watching you I've done a few valve bodies but I've never done a complete transmission and probably never will. But you're my friend you and your father are amazing. Wanting to wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and a far better new year to come. Probably a good thing dad showed up when he did!😂
Good thing Rick turned up to persuade you to replace that bushing Travis ! You two amaze me. Shows what you can fix with common tools and common sense . 🌵
Anyone who can successfully rebuild an automatic transmission at home may as well be David Copperfield. All of those little check balls, small clips and various o rings would have my brain short circuiting in no time. Great content Travis!
I just had my 2003 F250 7.3L tranny rebuilt by a local guy here in DFW that is well known for those tranny's, he did some up grades and fixed known deficiencies and did it for $3900 out the door. I got a 2 year 24k warranty to boot. I use mine for towing a 5th wheel only, not a daily driver or a 4x4 or racer. Just a tow monster. My truck only has 126k miles on it but it was leaking tranny fluid under a load. I think age was the main culprit. It seemed to shift fine but its much smoother now for sure.
Just a heads up at the 9.40 mark that aluminum plantery gear needs replace with a steel one from a 47re it's a weak point in those 47rh at 600hp and drag racing u will strip the splines off
I’ve done everyone on Brit engines: leaded bearings, ported heads, machined blocks, rebuilt rads etc but never an auto. Always sent to a specialist. Now I remember why. Great work!
This is now 2 breakdowns of complex machines, legendary Cummins and the little known technological "Fluid drive" marvel, automatic hydraulic transmission, not to be confused with Hydrostatic trans. Definitely a niche dept. Most people aren't wanting to touch them but from what im seeing, they are not as complex as once thought. Just alittle lol. Good vid
Hey Travis, there’s a great channel called precision transmission, they show some of the most detailed tear downs and, the guy Trent shows what goes wrong and shows what he uses to make them solid units.
Bravo on the instructions part. Yesterday I tore apart my 1975 Stihl 028Av-Super without knowing anything about where it went whatever. Everything turned out fine since most of the stuff kinda only went in one spot, and most of the bolts were the same. Great video!
WoW that was very informative ! Thanks Travis ! You would make an excellent shop Teacher ! Your Dad could even be a guest speaker ! Can't wait ( actually jonesing ) to see what Body you choose ! Godspeed to you and your family !
Another Great Video Travis.. Man i was nervous for u when u said whoops when it slipped into place i laughed and u 3 secs later taking the pan off , im like thats my luck. Great content real life working on cars nothing goes as planned. Looking forward to the fly n drives .. your dad and you are awesome. 🫡
Yes sir that was a good video of showing this transmission build. Trans G has been around for a while I got a transmission reprogramming kit from them for a Turbo 400 transmission back in the early eighties. Notice that they market the kit as a reprogramming kit. Back when I was a service tech on business machines, I spent some time with Sweda cash registers, and the older Sweda cash registers were mechanically programmed. You had to take certain sections apart and either replace pieces or modify them to get the register to perform, different functions. Of course, nowadays with the computerized equipment it is a matter of electronically reprograming. This was a good presentation of this rebuild process and you are to the point and present your information without any fanfare that one may see in other You Tube videos, but of course that also shows the differences in folks all across the country.🥸👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Best part of the video is mentioning the time investments and making mistakes. You always see these trans rebuilds and they make it seem like it takes 4hours.
Well done Travis. I want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Keep the great content coming. I can't wait to see what kind of a body you come up with for this build.
i really enjoyed the video thanks for sharing my comments were made from years of building those transmissions not saying you did anything wrong i just do differently so please don't get upset
Love the fact that you save old American Iron I also like Cummings turbo diesels I watched a video last night from a channel called restored they got a 1940s International truck running and they put Sinclair Oil signage on it I figured you would find that interesting since you love gas station memorabilia
Great video as usual Travis and good luck going forward with your build. Something did drip / leak when you first started up the engine - not sure if it was from the transmission or engine though.
You didn't need to buy that valve body shift kit just hook up a simple torque converter lock up switch easy to do go through a wire #53 coming out of the computer if I remember right it tells the computer when to shift to lock up. I lock mine up in 2-3rd gear no problem. Just gotta remember to switch it off before you come to a stop or you will stall out. IDK if the VB can handle the extra horses but one way to find out lol....AND I liked the Vaseline trick never thought of that....
So enjoying this video series. Love your fly and drives,.. This is different and cool... Hope you find a nice body. I'm thinking of a Hudson Hawk ...sort of .. (wishful thinking) Something big anyway. All the best for Christmas to you, your good lady wife and your dad. Blessings for the New Year. From Southern Ontario Canada.
Merry Christmas. Is this your first time taking a transmission apart and rebuilding one. If so with a little patience and knowledge anyone can do it right. With the right tools
The exhaust manifold I would have held off until you have a body, you might need a forward/mid or rear turbo flange outlet depending on the engine bay configuration of the new body.
I don’t recall seeing bushings in the rebuild kit or whether you replaced them in this transmission. I noticed the 6 pinion rear planetary, possibly an upgrade from the standard 4 pinion planetary. 😅
Did you pull front cover to bullitt proof the killer dowell. Thats going to be a monster by the snapiness of throttle response. Did your dad find out what that Indiana diesel that he sold, that caused all the oil leaking? Have a nice Holiday. Were up in Greenland catching lots of cold wind.
I have a ninety one first jen cummins, do you do?Engine overhauls for the public most of the shops around my town. They will rip you off. I trust you to do it right
Great video. Say, that curved yellow plastic piece that's on the selector shaft on the valve body, mine broke in half from age, during reassembly. The sensor outside of the case that this sensor reacts too, well, I don't know what this is for and I'm wondering if I need to replace this curbed plastic. Will it throw codes if I don't replace it? Actually broke taking the valve body back off, I also forgot to put the selector rod in!!
I appreciate you showing your mistakes, that said, I seen something you can ask your dad as he sounds knowledgeable. I presoaked all of my parts like the bands and steels in trays and let them drip off as it is messy but if your doing several a week like I did, then time kills most shops as they struggle. Nice step by step instructional video. I've never been brave enough to tackle a transmission job on my own vehicles because of how much stuff is involved. I see you like the Dodge brand most of all. Thanks!
I mean.. Who the truck figured out all of those components? There's a zillion parts and pieces to achieve one outcome. Absolutely mind blowing.

Thank you for showing what I consider the most in-depth valve body kit I have ever seen.
I love the banter between your dad and yourself.

Yeah it got kinda hairy I hope I did it all right lol.
@@theetravisb Yeah, especially changing that pesky front pump bushing! I think you did a great job.
Terrific job, very intuitive, good humor, keep up the good work. P.S. Hello Rick
Love the CONTENT and been binge watching for AWHILE! Ur kILLING IT BRO. U & ur father are TRUE TROOPERS ON A MISSION💪
I’m going to have this playing in the background while I work with my grandpa
Thank God for DADs..😊
Very good explanation of how a transmission works. You did a great job!
Good thing Rick turned up to persuade you to replace that bushing Travis ! You two amaze me. Shows what you can fix with common tools and common sense . 🌵
Father and son working together 💪💪💪💪
I wait patiently every week for you to put out a video, there my favorite thing to watch on UA-cam, keep up the hard work👍🏼
Awesome video Travis, really enjoyed that.....although it's not a transmission.....it's a gearbox 😂😂
Rick to the rescue
Kind of tough rebuild is an understatement! Nice job.
I appreciate you explaining how the various parts of the transmission function as you disassembled the transmission.
i love how you teach how to build this trans
Great channel T! Showing the way things work is very interesting. You’re a great teacher.Your dad brings a lot of knowledge also. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent work there - a comprehensive and useful guide for the community. The Father/Son combo knocks it outta the park... again!
Learning some good stuff here. I’ve never had the guts to take on a transmission but would now after this. Thanks
Anyone who can successfully rebuild an automatic transmission at home may as well be David Copperfield. All of those little check balls, small clips and various o rings would have my brain short circuiting in no time. Great content Travis!
Thank you!

You do an excellent job at explaining things!
Watching on my tv so wanted to make sure I liked your video!
Waw Travis, you make it all look easy. Well done!
I like the home made spring compressor. Good job. I hope you get a cool body to set on top.
Good video learned a lot. Looking forward to what body you find.
Just a heads up at the 9.40 mark that aluminum plantery gear needs replace with a steel one from a 47re it's a weak point in those 47rh at 600hp and drag racing u will strip the splines off
You can make art with broken truck parts
Geez I never thought the auto transmission had so much in it. Great video again and following with greater interest now 👍👌
You guys worked well sorting out the trans.
I’ve done everyone on Brit engines: leaded bearings, ported heads, machined blocks, rebuilt rads etc but never an auto. Always sent to a specialist. Now I remember why. Great work!
Brit engines are rubbish
Great video Travis. Lot of progress and great work and content. Enjoyed watching 👍🏼👍🏼
Good vid
You got caught just in time....😂
Keep on the good work Travis...
All the best from France!
Hey Travis, there’s a great channel called precision transmission, they show some of the most detailed tear downs and, the guy Trent shows what goes wrong and shows what he uses to make them solid units.
Yeah, great channel, nice people.

I absolutely love your channel. Say hey to your dad for me he seem really cool to hang out with. Your very lucky.
Travis as thr Rose Fam. in South Afrca we wish you, dad ,mum and Emily plus 5he new child a most blessd Christmas.❤God bless🎉
WoW that was very informative ! Thanks Travis ! You would make an excellent shop Teacher ! Your Dad could even be a guest speaker ! Can't wait ( actually jonesing ) to see what Body you choose ! Godspeed to you and your family !
Dad and that ever watchful eye lol. Keep up the good work.👍🏻

Heck no this took like over a week I think that’s having all the parts and no hard parts broken or destroyed.
Way to cool thank God it's you now me 😮 nice work looking good 👍🎄
Well done Travis. I want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Keep the great content coming. I can't wait to see what kind of a body you come up with for this build.
Merry Christmas you will know when I know
Well done really enjoyed this episode.
What a hard, long, but awesome work Travis! Wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and a happy new year for 2025! 🎉🎉🎉
i really enjoyed the video thanks for sharing my comments were made from years of building those transmissions not saying you did anything wrong i just do differently so please don't get upset
Merry Christmas good work and fun to watch 🙌
The engineering of this device/ transmission is beyond my thinking capacity..
Great to see you take dads word as one takes it of the word of God. LOL😊
Hey T That was alot of work great job.
Very impressive work man! 😄💪🏻
the snap ring you removed from intermediate shaft where the planatary gears were comes in different thickness to set up the clearance on the setup
A good tool to use when installing lip seals is a set of filler gages. Transmission fluid mixed with STP.😊
Late 60's -72' Dodge truck body
Well done Mr 😎
Thanks for another , Brother !
Transmissions are like onions on steroids. layer after layer after layer after layer
Great job Travis looks like it would great…

Cool video! Always wondered what it took to rebuild a transmission. Can't wait to see what body you pick. Merry Christmas!
Great job, very interesting.
Well done that Man 💯
Good job!
Thanks for sharing.
Great Job , Travis :)
Great video as usual Travis and good luck going forward with your build.
Something did drip / leak when you first started up the engine - not sure if it was from the transmission or engine though.
Please make sure you check your clutch clearances & end play. Not sure if I just missed this in your video or not.
Nice job sir Nice show sir 😃👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍😍

Nice job!
hope you cleaned every thing good
Nice shade tree. Plus others. Humans included.
I think you did great! 👍 I would have been to intimidated…
the od does come off you just have to use a pry bar to help you get it off the parking pall is hard to release without help
There's a snap ring hidden under a rectangle plate held by two phillips screw.😊
The last thing that removed with the roller bearing is called the spring and roller.

The exhaust manifold I would have held off until you have a body, you might need a forward/mid or rear turbo flange outlet depending on the engine bay configuration of the new body.
You are braver than I
i keep old intermediate shafts cut off to help align the od setup hard to do without a line up shaft
I'm wrong your working on. A 95. 47.👌
Listen to yer dad!!!!!!!!! 😂🏴👍🏻🏴
we all ways add 3 more springs i use 3 small c clamps to remove the plate. adding 3 more springs makes it release faster better shifts
I don’t recall seeing bushings in the rebuild kit or whether you replaced them in this transmission. I noticed the 6 pinion rear planetary, possibly an upgrade from the standard 4 pinion planetary. 😅

Great video! Just wondering what the total hours invested, start to finish to do the rebuilt?
unless you installed the fill in park valve you still need to fill in neutral
Hi Travis I wonder could you fit a VW Crafter body over that Cummings engine? 🤔
yes it will come out it stays connected to valve body and pops off in the od unit done it many times
