But wouldn't a new door have been a better idea? Or is that a non-standard door height; it looks a bit off-sized.

Yes, the door was not usual size.
And the person decided to fix the old one instead.

@@TheHandymanWork Both fair points. My dad had to cut down a door once to fit an old (1890's) house. And if the customer wanted to fix the old door, that is there choice.
