That 9:00 Patch!!!!!!! Holy WOW. I cant believe how much better this thing sounds that a DX7, its not even to compare. Now this would be nice to have in a small box, but same POWER!
That bit from 7:10 - I replayed over and over about 15 times, playing along with an 80s Queen-style guitar lead. So huge, so nice. I can't imagine the plug-in even coming CLOSE to this.
Depends on how well the manufacturer/programmer of the plugin does. You’d be amazed - I’ve seen videos where blindfolded skeptics took a test and could not tell the difference between plugin and physical model for some very impressive beasts. I have some in my own collection that I guarantee no matter what you say or think you would not be able to differentiate side by side.
My journey into FM Synthesis was via a DX9, kid brother of DX7. At the time, I wasn't looking for anything specific. Calling in a one of my local music stores, it was the first thing I tried & walked out with it. Glad I did. - After that, I built up a small collection of FX synths: TX7, DX 100, DX5, DX7mk2 plus, eventually, building up a TX816 rack driven by a Mother keyboard (KX88). Not all for my use, I'll add. Kids soon take over anything Dad has, particularly when they're studying music or just have enquiring minds. Whatever Dad brought home, you can bet kids claimed sooner or later! - Rome wasn't built in a day, neither was all this! Several years in fact.
By far one of my fave Yamaha synths. It so awesome to have that kind of behemoth of a synth in your own studio. Dreaming of owning one, but its sad to see that the dx1 is super rare.
I have a DX7 and a TX7. In combo mode, you can load up the DX1/DX5 patches and get that same dual mode. It can also be achieved with a TX816 rack or with a couple instances of Dexed VST.
That sound you demonstrated from 7:06 on was just awesome, very dreamy but powerful the same time, and also liked the separation between the 2 sound channels of the DX1. This is a really desirable machine, although I must satisfy myself with the virtual version and a cheapo midi keyboard.
8:17. The opening roff on Walk of Life was actually played on a Jupiter 8. But the pan pipe sound at the start of Ride Across the River was the DX1. Alan Clarke played the Kalimba sound on the Yamaha GS1, Guy Fletcher played the DX1.
I mean, it's just amazing how technology has shrunken everything down to apps and software these days, but personally I'd rather have a machine like this. I was waiting for this video - MAGNIFICENT!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
This is the FM synth to rule them all! But the TX-816 is pretty sweet too! Picture this, 8 DX-7’s in a convenient midi controlled rack.... apprearantly Harold Faltermeyer used one for Top Gun and Kenny Loggin’s Danger zone.

Super cool video! Good idea to show the signal with the scope. I am sorry, but for me the king is the TX816 (8xDX7-rack) and i am happy that i have one working.
@Max Cavadini Hi Max, there is also a brand new multi-ram-cartridge compatible with the DX1, DX5, DX7 mk1 and RX11 called RWC-128 from the italian brand Synthsquare! You can find them on eBay, Reverb, Instagram!
I know this can be replicated very easily in software but there's something about that huge synth that's so appealing. And notice the illumanted algorithm screen. Every DX should have had that. It's like the screen the Predator has on his arm.
Yummy playing at 3:09 :-) It sounds great ! And that thing was 1983, so that is an amazing looking synth for that time. The follow up to the GS1 & GS2. I got this magazine that did an article about FM-synthese. In there you can read that one engineer, who knew nothing about synths or the vocabulary, was busy exploring the options for the first FM-synth at Stanford University in the late 60's. A department of Stanford went to Yamaha (1973) to further delop it and that became the GS1 in 1981.
Your enthusiasm is infectious! A bit of an aside. This thing when new cost twice as much as a new high end Chevy! So Yamaha new it would not sell in big numbers. They were just showing off lol!

Actually the Keyboard Scaling is a Volume Curve that the Operators respond to, not how the instrument responds to you. That's Velocity Sensitivity. In case nobody else mentioned it, the DX1 had Polyphonic Aftertouch which was never incorporated in any other DX instrument.

Tim Mantle Haha! Exactly why I need them! When I bought my DX5, it came with the B cart, a DX7 cart and a RAM cart. Finding the A cart and Perf. cart is an impossible task 😫 I have the SysEx and a couple of old 64 slot RAM carts on their way from Canada to fix that issue but the H705 or the RWC-128 from SynthSquare look a far better long term option!

Did I hear some Captain and Tenille in there? Love... love will keep us together, think of me babe whenever... DX1 what a synth. Too bad I can't make FM sound good. I am just not an FM sound designer. I would need presets to work from. But, wow, what a beast of a synth. With Korg and Behringer finally bringing old synths stuff back to life do you think Yamaha will get on board and reissue some of the most import of their designs? A new DX1 in a smaller case? Maybe a new GX-1 redesigned to be table top in size and weight (yeah, it'll be $10,000 but it will sell enough to make the effort worth it.)
I will probably list mine in the near future.. After I sell I may never purchase one again. It's for those who must have the BEST. I will be deciding one way or another in about 2 to 3 months.

Hi Dr. Mix! Have you ever encountered synthesizers such as the Yamaha DX 75, 88? I once saw such speakers at a performance by Michael Jackson in 1988. But there is very little information about them on the Internet.
