    Just to clarify some details - this is from discussion on Gearspace:
    Some FM synths (DX11/21/27/100) have the patch named 'Solid Bass' which sounds quite close to the 'Lately Bass' but it's not exactly the same. DX11 (and others) have sine-only waveforms but TX81z have sine and other additional waveforms. And beside that LatelyBass and SolidBass have significant differences in their patch parameters.
    The Lately Bass preset was an attempt by Yamaha's sound designers to approximate the bass sound in Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done for Me Lately?" which was a tweaked version of -- you guessed it - Solid Bass on the DX7!

    I gave a pair of these away along with an 8-bit Yamaha SPX50 at Halloween last year to my neighbor who loves old keyboards he was looking for a DX7 but couldn’t find one in good enough condition or at a reasonable price so when I cleaned out an old gear closet at the studio I found a pair of these rack TX81Z’s. I forgot I had them. They had been in the storage closet since around 1999 or 2000. I plugged them up and they worked perfectly. For a 1U rack unit they are heavy but everything Yamaha made back then was. When you look at it you think it is going to weigh the same as an SPX90 reverb but they are WAY heavier than the effect units of the same era from Yamaha. Great video and 90s throwback tune!

  • @djtommykeys
    @djtommykeys 4 роки тому +6

    In the late 80's I bought two of these for my rack and became quite adept at programming them. They were quite thin 4 op sounds that benefitted greatly from the internal effects like the chorus you added. Also stacking the same sound and detuning them one up the other down helped a lot. I was able to get very decent analog synth sounds this way.

    Its funny how a bunch of synths and a drum machine from the 80's paved the way for new genre's of music in the 90's. For me it was the Korg M1 that started it and the 909 that completed it. Those 2 are a match made in heaven. I thank them both for giving us all of the classic's.

    Hi Alex, I didn’t know you owned the AMS delay. Would you consider doing a video on it? I am a huge fan of Peter Gabriel and I know he used it extensively. I’ve always been curious about it’s full functionality. There has been a lot of interest, and rightfully so, in the reverb, but there isn’t a ton of info on the delay out there.

      i've actually been surprised that there is no virtual version like an UAD or something. The RMX kinda vibe is available from UAD, it's now in 500 series, and it's non-linear algo (or derivatives) are to be found in various other hardware verbs like the Bricasti and TC M6000. But nobody seems to do some kind of DMX15...
