DX11 (and others) have sine-only waveforms but TX81z have sine and other additional waveforms. And beside that LatelyBass and SolidBass have significant differences in their patch parameters. I gave a pair of these away along with an 8-bit Yamaha SPX50 at Halloween last year to my neighbor who loves old keyboards he was looking for a DX7 but couldn’t find one in good enough condition or at a reasonable price so when I cleaned out an old gear closet at the studio I found a pair of these rack TX81Z’s. I forgot I had them. They had been in the storage closet since around 1999 or 2000. I plugged them up and they worked perfectly. For a 1U rack unit they are heavy but everything Yamaha made back then was. When you look at it you think it is going to weigh the same as an SPX90 reverb but they are WAY heavier than the effect units of the same era from Yamaha. Great video and 90s throwback tune!
In the late 80's I bought two of these for my rack and became quite adept at programming them. They were quite thin 4 op sounds that benefitted greatly from the internal effects like the chorus you added. Also stacking the same sound and detuning them one up the other down helped a lot. I was able to get very decent analog synth sounds this way.

Hi Alex, I didn’t know you owned the AMS delay. Would you consider doing a video on it? I am a huge fan of Peter Gabriel and I know he used it extensively. Just showing the later 15-80S and fully expanded RMX16 as that's what I'll have to physically demonstrate, but I'll mention a bit if the story. It will be more of a demo than a documentary.
i've actually been surprised that there is no virtual version like an UAD or something. The RMX kinda vibe is available from UAD, it's now in 500 series, and it's non-linear algo (or derivatives) are to be found in various other hardware verbs like the Bricasti and TC M6000. But nobody seems to do some kind of DMX15...
santibanks I’m similarly perplexed that no one has emulated it as a plugin. They were very prevalent in the 80s and it’s hard to find a plugin that does exactly what they were said to do (per the manual and online accounts of the sounds you can get out of it).
This is SO f---ing great, Alex! Those vocals are awesome too, definitely soulful enough! A hint of Sylvester there... You definitely raised a smile here too with your "rap"... I did something so similar in my twenties!

Ah man you may not have been taking it too seriously but that turned out quality! Maybe it helps to not take these things too seriously 😉 I love that era’s sound, good chorus lyrics too, even got a little emotional☺️Thanks man!
Here's some more songs that use the Lately Bass. Mary J Blige "You Remind Me" Jodeci "Forever My Lady" Al B Sure! "Night And Day" Hi Five "She's Playing Hard To Get"
The chorus and reverbs sound inauthentic for the era. A little less reverb on the vocals would have been nicer too. Has a great dirty sound of it's own though. Just a couple tweeks in the mix, but especially on the effects, and it would be a A+ track.

Top notch as usual, Alex. I actually loved the belting soul singer hook!
The moment I realized my new modern songs are late 80s bangers...
This is SO f---ing great, Alex!
Those vocals are awesome too, definitely soulful enough! A hint of Sylvester there...
You definitely raised a smile here too with your "rap"... I did something so similar in my twenties!
"...I'm not taking this very seriously..."
Which is exactly the right attitude when it comes to rap...
You're the best ! Good ideas and very professional result, with a touch of humour. Perfect. Thanks for sharing !
Hold on to those Yamahas, the prices are going to skyrocket.
these are very very common FM sounds found on countless Yamaha product.
They made so many of them that the price of FM synths seems to remain affordable.
If only that were true of Jupiter-8s...
Watching the Element433 FM tutorials, I can see why
@bookmarkthis Yeah, the TX81Z didn't go up that much though, you can find them for well under $150, even as low as $100 with some luck.
Dude! You fucking nailed it. It's C&C Factory and Black Box all over again. Very impressive.
4:34 I love the subtle hint to Fatboy Slim! Haha!
Great banger, my friend! :D
Always.
Fun story, 10+ years ago I was out running and almost ran into Fatboy Slim. I gave him a very awkward smile as I couldn't think of anything interesting to say.
@@AlexBallMusic I actually shaked his hand when was teen and met him after concert in Moscow like about 20 years ago. Damn, he needs to return, where is he anyway?
He is teaching his daughter how to DJ! :-) ua-cam.com/video/h5kFZ2UZ4uI/v-deo.html
@@AlexBallMusic Although not everybody needs a 303: my yellow Behringer TD-3 does a pretty good job at it as well! :-)
Really surprised, but it turned out pretty good! Nostalgia hitting.
Ok, here goes my horrid voice! (Installs Freddie Mercury voice kit)🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ah man you may not have been taking it too seriously but that turned out quality! Maybe it helps to not take these things too seriously 😉 I love that era’s sound, good chorus lyrics too, even got a little emotional☺️Thanks man!
It should be illegal for a meme song to unironically slap this much
Not really a meme song
Well Alex, the vocals were surprisingly good! Great track!
Cajmere: "chit-chat" (and a lot of Chicago house).
I still get one since 1990.
For House.
Listen to "Chit-chat", alex, please.
Classic!!!
I lovely 80's arrange. Making FM sound and humming voice are super excellent.
Here's some more songs that use the Lately Bass.
Mary J Blige "You Remind Me"
Jodeci "Forever My Lady"
Al B Sure! "Night And Day"
Hi Five "She's Playing Hard To Get"
All that Guy stuff used it as well..
Thanks!
@@joshuasailor2974 sad that I would forget that. I'm surprised that Teddy didn't use it for Michael Jackson
Whigfield.
the VOCALS was the BEST PART :D!!!! nice approach man, really cool!
Difference between every other UA-cam knob/gaming doodler
And a studio engineer/mixing pro
So much fun, and a great track in the end! I've been getting into the Yamaha FMs myself lately. A whole world to explore.
He did a great job with that "1990 American Hip Hop" sound... but then he said "Chunes" instead of "tunes," and gave himself away.
Get busy with the facts
it’s choon
This is hysterical. You nailed it on this!! That AMS is incredible!
The chorus and reverbs sound inauthentic for the era. A little less reverb on the vocals would have been nicer too.
Has a great dirty sound of it's own though. Just a couple tweeks in the mix, but especially on the effects, and it would be a A+ track.
Brilliant! Just brilliant! Lots of memories in that track, Livin' Joy, Real McCoy... Nothing wrong with that singing, better than what I would had come up with :)
You're my favorite musician. Excellent once again 😊👍🏻
Thanks. 🙂
Banger for sure. 😎 I’ve got the DX11, which is essentially the keyboard version of the TX81Z. I mostly use it as a master controller, but this video urges me to utilize those sounds. Stay smooth!
Great video. Lots of cool information, humor and a worthy end-result.
My God. C&C Music Factory got nothin' on you, man! This is early '90s gold!
Banger! I had to take a quick look to the calendar to make sure it REALLY wasn't 1992.
This was so fun to watch! The editing is so good, as with all your videos, and the rap was really clever and honestly way better than i expected.
Wow this takes me back to the '93 summer in Spain...I love the track, glad to see that lockdown is having NO effect on your genius, Alex.
Absolutely brilliant and entertaining video Alex!
