R.I.P. Vangelis. Self taught. Not classically trained. Never bothered learning musical notation. It was all from the heart and spirit. Such a wonderous and talented man. Your music will live for as long as people have ears to listen and emotions to move.
I just love this song, thank you for decomposing it. Now imagine, it was made 42 years ago (1982) without all that computers you have. Big composer. Nevertheless respect to you for the work! Greetings!
@@Meteotrance Yes, he did. The deep, rumbling percussion hits at the start of Blade Runner was his concert bassdrum which he sampled and transposed one octave lower. This sound was unheard-of in 1982.
@@thejollyjoker187 Yes, especially noticeable in 'Blade Runner Blues' and 'Spinner Ascent'. Not sure what all the pads and strings are in 'End Titles'.
According to the liner notes, the drum machine used on the soundtrack was a Roland CR-5000, and he did have access to an Emulator 1. However, he was also known for playing IRL drumkits on his 70s material as well.
Finally a great video in this era of easy tutorials and shortcuts to everything: learning from the masters and trying to re-create by ear!! Amazing and so useful
Awesome work as always. Bit of a random fact. Iron Maiden used this as intro music on their 86/87 Somewhere in Time tour. Because they revisited it this year, they used it again and it sounded huge through arena/stadium speakers.
I watched the ending to Blade Runner so many times as a kid just to listen to that sound track :) You have also given me another reason to purchase the Muse for my studio lol
@@pixelspotmedia9046 What bugs do you know of? I'm genuinly interested as I got my Muse 2 days after release and haven't encountered any bugs yet. | upgraded the firmware to the latest version a few days after receiving it so maybe they were fixed in that release?
You could have used the Prophet 6 and the onboard sequencer it has to do the bass line. It's easy to recreate. The original was done on a Prophet 10 with onboard poly sequencer. The strings are VP 330. The percussion and incidental sounds are done with the Emulator. I believe a Linn LM1 or Roland TR-808 is handling the "White noise" type percussion (using a Shaker/Cabasa sound). The swelling brass is of course the CS-80. The best way to reproduce this using modern gear (in my opinion anyway is: Arturia PolyBrute 12 for the brass. Prophet 6 or Take 5 for the sequenced bass line. Prophet X or really any hardware sampler (1010Music Tangerine, Roland P6, Sonicware LoFi-12, or even some Akai instrument) for the sample based material. Behringer VC340 for the string machine sound. Arturia DrumBrute or Analog Rytm MKII for the percussion sound.
Claudio, A knob turn here and a slider alteration there, and then as if by magic, 'that's it right?' I'll never get over how you and Louis make everything look so easy, when in fact to normal human beings, it really is anything BUT easy!
What a joy to watch we all love Vangelis bladerunner harps of the ancient temples,dr mix reconstruction was marvelous too, beautiful sounds that gives shivers down my spine. The accompanying movie was as brilliant pure heart and soul reeking of atmosphere
Wow... dude, such an iconic theme. Reproducing the song is pretty complex, imagine now what was going through Vangelis mind when he was composing it and fine-tuning it. Thanks for honoring Vangelis' memory. New subscriptor!
Loved this video for many reasons. It's one of my favourite films, soundtracks, and I enjoyed how well you work together to get it right. Can you imagine the workload to originally create this on an analogue multitrack? 🤯
Nice recreation guys! As far as I can tell, the horn sound Vangelis uses is actually just 2 sawtooth oscs nearly in tune, but not quite so you get a slow phasey effet. The Muse ca do that as well, and actually sounds close to the CS 80. Of course you also need a slight filter envelope, where it opens kind slowly. You can also essign some aftertouch to the filter cutoff for extra expression :) Also I think you could add some VP330 strings to fill up the air (or similar, thr Muse can do an approximation too, but you need a bucket brigate chorus).
I'm really impressed with your work. The most fine and imperceptible sounds are detected by you easily. So, that's awesome. thanks for share that masterpiece with us.
My fellow Greek VANGELIS, always awesome to watch these reconstructions, i am trying to find out how they where synchronizing all these synths without midi, but dont forget that all these guys where super talented musicians and they knew very well what they where doing even with some "primitive" compared to nowdays equipment.
Vangelis was a genius that produced new music everyday. He set up his home studio so that he could select any sound he wanted quickly. Thus the constant switching from left brain to right brain thought processes that most of us go through when switching from creative work to mechanical work (e.g. how much verb on this instrument or how much compression on that instrument) was minimised by Vangelis. He managed to create a synthesis between music and pure sound. I'm not sure if he was a pioneer in this but I've certainly read this about him.
I am happy i watched this….also your jm jarre oxygene deconstruct just reinforced my admiration for thus kind of music and the space/time/genius context it emerged from….thank you for using your skills in this blissfull way….
My neighbors at the time knew every little detail of this song. It's one of the CD's I had to buy twice because of too much wear. The others are Wish You Were Here and Travelling Without Moving.
Hi Dr Mix 😊👍 I'm a grown up guy who played synth and Rhodes and all the beautiful vintage stuff in my youth. I love your channel but I still have some synts that's I can't see that you have "remembered", like my JP 8000.??? It would be so fun to see you open that old box again, cause it's a hidden mini monster that deserves to still be heard and presented by no other than Dr Mix of course😊. Regards from Norway 🇳🇴 Robban 58 😊😊😊
Incredible work, thank you very much for this ! In my opinion Vangelis was a unique artist. Correct me if i am wrong, at that time Vangelis had a number of synths around him , allowed him working his music 60% live + 40% overdub. Later, with his custom modules , live input increased even more...
Vangelis mainstreamed "what you see what you record" thing. He was not the first. Ennio Morricone was the first But he perfected it. All his keyboards and other instruments were always on and recording. While a first cut (with no music) of a movie was playing on his movie projector he moved around and played to the visuals on the screen. He is also known to use presets with minor tweaks.
Vangelis was a genius, though his later work consists of mostly playing his massive custom synth/controller and it hurt his creativity in a way, as Dr. Mix clearly shows here, there is a sense of exploring and creating layers of sounds which were unprecedented for those days. For me the Bladerunner soundtrack will always be his Magnum Opus.
I've seen things... seen things you little people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion bright as magnesium... I rode on the back decks of a blinker and watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments... they'll be gone

- That moog is mighty cool. It has a bit of that CS-80 vibe.
- Cool. You got the DX7 and M1 out also.
- Moog Muse is so much more affordable than a CS-80 also 😀

Vangelis faisait les tambours avec de vrais instruments j'ai vu dans une vidéo 😊
What I like about Doctor Mix is how much joy he finds in music, even after so many years. I wish I was this enthusiastic.
Amazing, sacrilegious and brilliant all at the same time. Gives a measure of Vangelis' genius.
You Sir summed up our collective feeling perfectly
E-MU Emulator was used a lot in Blade runner. This is the time that Vangelis stopped using real percussion. Timpani in End Titles is sampled.
Yeah, and the strings are from Roland's VP 330, which I think Claudio owns, so, I was kinda waiting that he'd use that..
I think Vangelis sampler his real timpani setup, he have a lot of percussion arround the studio to feed his E-MU emulator sampler .

This is by far the best track of the whole movie, an anthem, probably a top 5 of Vangelis' track.
"By far" is a bit strong considering the excellent intro theme and "Blade Runner Blues", imo... but it is really, really, dope.
