Unfortunately, there are no good solutions for GIS and mapping for small landowners and those interested in DIY forestry. But I've done my best to find the most workable solution.
In this video, I will show you how you can map out your land and its features using nothing but a cell phone, computer, and a bit of foot work. No GPS required.
    The apps used:
    Tracklia
    Google Earth Pro
0:00 - GIS and Its Problems
3:17 - How to Use the Tracklia App
    8:45 - Mapping the Boundaries
    12:10 - Streams
18:39 - Ruins and Vernal Pool
21:13 - Post Processing Using Google Earth

I added the metes and bounds from my deed to google maps, anchored the polygram to the correct stake (approximate but very close), exported a KML file, and then added the resulting data to OnX maps and then onto my phone with an imported mapping source file for my area. I now have a map I can use offline and it is much more accurate than the boundaries shown on the state tax assessor's maps. I did this to stop some folks that had trespassed and started taking timber off of my property. The money I recouped (under the threat of calling the sheriffs) was significant.

Fantastic video, I have followed your recommendations and now have a great map of our 5 acre property here in Queensland, Australia To tidy it up I exported the boundary polygon as a .kml file. I then used online local government boundary data to find the lat / long for each corner of our place. Opened the the file in Notepad++ and edited the coordinates, imported it back into Earth and bingo.... accurate boundaries. Thank you for taking the time to make such an informative video, your property looks beautiful.

Your land is dense forest. How do you get a GPS signal? I have never been able to map my land using this technique.

If tracklea could layer with county property viewer which show property boundaries or gis it would be very useful.
I guess i have to pay for the onX. :(

This was my exact question. I am a realtor and I was hoping to use this offline while I look at 24 acres in the mountains of North Carolina.

Is there any money to be made on wood in Maine? I have 50 acres and a guy look at it he offered me 6600.00 does not seem worth it.

    • @wizewoods9130

Oh my , I've got to comment on that question, YES there is "money to be made on wood in Maine", I don't know what you have on your 50 acres but that's probably a lowball offer. There are district foresters in Maine that will come walk your land with you for free They will not manage a timber sale but will give you some suggestions and ideas for managing your land. Next step would be to find a reputable private consulting forester in your area, they can write a management plan for you, map your property, measure timber volumes and manage a timber sale if it's feasible. There are cost sharing programs available that can help offset the cost of the management plan. Hope this helps a little bit, but please be wary of loggers offering lump sums for your timber. Good luck and enjoy your woodlands.

I bought cut forest land in maine in 2007. For recreation but apparently cist of cutting still not enough for a profit or to pay taxes

You could have mentioned upfront that Tracklia is only available on Andriod phones, no app for iPhones.

It was fairly recently removed. I'm currently building a mapping application that will work on both android and apple and will update this video when its ready.

Looking forward to that! I’ve been using GAIA GPS on my iPhone and wondered if there is a better app out there for this sort of thing.

5:21 hah! You are already dumbing it down for Americans! Love it…
(sorry I couldn’t help it 😂, usually I don’t comment on specific points in a video but found this hilarious! GIS is a kind of my hobby and I agree most of the tools are complete garbage from UX perspective. So I am really looking forward to the rest of the video… )

the GPS from cellphones is not accurate. It has an error of meters. It's not a good tool to map land

    • @thetimberlandinvestor
      @thetimberlandinvestor  11 місяців тому +5

All consumer-grade GPS units have an error of meters, and the cellphone GPS is just as good as what you would find in a handheld recreational Garmin model. GPS accuracy doesnt really improve until you get into Trimble-type units that can cost thousands, and the practical usability of those units havent kept pace with what's now available on the consumer market, so now even large industrial landowners are using cellphones for most mapping applications.
That said, you shouldnt use it for surveying, but this isnt what this video is about.

Hmmmm tell this in English please ???? Its not " free " to have a smart phone as its called. I still farm.....operate the farm......using a land line. I dont need photos... and the like. And.........for sure I dont have all the problems of which smart phone users have ! So......now.......back to the topic..... mapping your land ?

You just need a friend with some basic tech skills. Or grab a neighbor kid. I pay $25/month for my visible cell phone service and I have unlimited internet and phone. Probably cheaper than your land line.
