Hello I am a wingchun practitioner for 10 years I love your videos and your way of explaining the use of wingchun in street fights or situations outside the school environment, I take a lot of what you say to train, Greetings from Mexico. If I ever go to London, I will visit your school. #fightboss
Fight SCIENCE other thing is, it’s harder to move property for those strikes than people think without the opponent stepping out of the way, which is why it’s important to commit forward confidently. However, I’ve also been surprised at how well it worked using it on a body shot and being able to grab the arm and land punches.
What about evading or dodging punches? With a little bit of footwork and head movement you can avoid most wild combos, especially from guys on the street since they aren't well trained. My coach use to say that blocking is good, but dodging is better, because there's some punches that you don't want to block. That's especially true on the street because someone might not just try to hit you with a punch, they might have a weapon that you don't see. Just learning to duck can be the difference between taking a hit and avoiding one.
Absolutely, I completely agree. Good footwork with counter punching is equally effective. This is just one approach of many that could be applied in a Street Fight. Thanks for watching my friend.
I always learn something from these “Fight Science” videos. That’s what keeps me coming back. Well, that and to watch Nick work on his face hardening! That’s one way to toughen up your sparring partner! 😂👍🏻#FIGHTBOSS
Fight SCIENCE I want to be a martial arts instructor when I'm older I'm a student in Japanese jiu-jitsu , boxing , wing chun and aikido I've been doing it for 3 years do u have any tips on doing that ? Thanks for the reply 🙏🏻
@@cameronroberts5283 that's great news! Sounds like you are getting an all round education in martial arts. This I would say is the first step towards being a proffessional martial arts teacher. Thanks for making it your goal to teach one of the main rules in a fight now a days that people seem to forget which is its a damn fight your going to take a punch or two its inevitable this isn’t a damn Jackie chan/Jet Lee martial arts movie expect to get hit
been learning the basics for a couple of months now from wongs dvd's, I like this vid, no messing around, getting straight in there, thinking of joining your gym, live not too far away in hackney
I´d like to see how to defend against a high-low combo like a cross to solar plexus followed by a hook to the temple. Trying to block the first one leaves you wide open for the second, especially blocking the first one with the right hand if he attacks with the right first too. Turning from the first attack also creates openings for the hook or a follow-up straight.
I very like your tecnich , and for someone from karate and a krav maga background i find it very useful , plus your all videos give some other good necessary perspective for any Street fight.
I saw him in person a while back, waaaaaaaay bugger and more imposing in person! Would not want to fight him lol. Crisp boxing, I like it. I think more wing chun, silat and Kali guys(trapping arts) should practice boxing or Muay Thai to really help sharpen their reflexes and help their applications in real fights
I know it´s not really your fighting style, but since you included the haymaker, I like to comment on it: I would only recommend hooks with the leading hand. Making big swings with the other has a high chance of hitting at an odd angle, which can easily hurt your wrist, or your flat of the finger hits some pointy bit of the skull (I tried it a lot on a boxing dummy and even that soft rubber hurts a lot, when you do that mishap!). Either of them can stop you from using that fist in that fight! You may say it´s easy to hit with practice, but even with practice, I did hit at odd angles more often than I like to admit and that was only on a static target, not to speak of someone that would actually try to avoid my strikes and strike me... IMHO it´s a bit safer to not turn the fist (like in Thai boxing and not western boxing), but open hand slaps or palm-strike variants are safer. The most dangerous and possibly most powerful variant I´ve tested on a dummy was the Slavic hook. The technique starts as a big slap and then turn it into a hook, by angling the arm and closing the fist. That offers a lot of speed and momentum, but it doesn´t change the fact that one bad hit screws up your fist.... and you got a much harder time guessing where it lands.
Every wing chun person should adapt to this delivery system. The 18 hands will still be there when you need them, but shell/shield/pak/intercept is really the go-to modern tactic. Lot less chasing the hands this way - love it.
Your videos are imo the best at giving practical insight on street fighting...Period! If you will Mr. Philips, let me know when you're visiting the U.S. would love to meet with you and train. #FIGHTBOSS
Thank you very much Darryl. Glad you like our channel. I'm supposed to be in Boston late May if you are interested? You can direct message me on Facebook if you would like an update in this event. Have a great day my friend.
@@fightscience I will make note of that thank you. I don't know if you have plans to expand outside the UK because there is a huge demand here in the U.S for what you teach. Particularly in Phoenix, Az..
In my experience and I was a bouncer... If someone is in your face and you must fight, you have a few options: 1) use your dominant hand and throw a short right hook and aim for the jaw line right past the chin. Throw this punch as fast and hard as you can. Don't telegraph it either. If you connect you should knock them out. 2) Head butt them on the bridge of their nose with the boney part of your forehead. If you hit them hard enough, you may break their nose. 3) Distract them with, "Oh shit here comes the cops" and point in the opposite direction. You gotta sell this one. Hope your acting is on point. When they look away, throw a strategically placed banana peel on the floor and skip away. When they step on it and slip and fall follow it up with a red turtle shell right to the keister and claim "Ima Wario, Ima gonna win!" and a devilish laugh.
In my utmost humble opinion. « Greet what arrives, escort what leaves, rush upon the loss of contact” The continuum of motion, energy and forward intent, in concordance with dominating space, not overcompensating but always dominating backed up by explosive power within one’s stable structure should define one’s wing Chun as depicted in this video, this concept were utilized beautifully by an Golden era Muay Thai Fighter known as the Plow-man to such effectiveness that the technique were later banned in competition(look up Lawrence Kenshin breakdowns for an complete analysis of the concept). The intention of always going in with forward intent is reminiscent as that of an tsunami. No matter what barrier it hits, it will always continue to move forward within the containment of its structure, as millions of tons of water continue to push behind it creating increased momentum, so even if it’s at a halt( ie hits a sound stable structure/building) it continues to increase the forward pressure to the point that it builds up a higher destructive energy which fulfills as a peak of utter annihilation the moment the barrier brakes. This is why structure combined with sensitivity and explosive energy is so highly emphasized in Wing Chun, like unto the tsunami, the moment you feel the barrier in front of you collapse, you gain and increase momentum and keep attacking with adapting striking until it’s over. The same concept is utilized within warfare known as “ violence of action” Of course theory and being able to apply in a real life scenario is an entirely different matter, which comes down to how one practices/ comprehends the system and how one structures one’s training to be as applicable as one can be. This is why being fit to fight within the compounds of “ quality in quantity” is imperative. Why a machine gun is dangerous is because it is the epitome of all these concepts. If it works as intended, it should consistently produce quality/quantity within the confines of the expected desired results. Our training should also reflect this. “ Belts are nothing, Skill is something, but intent is everything” “ Fighting is relativity in motion, never expect only respond” “ it is ones opponent within context that dictates tactics “ “ A fight, is a fight, is a fight. There is no such thing as an easy fight, this is why it’s called fighting” #Fightboss Great content as always mr Philips! 😀 Sincere regards Fellow martial brother Tom Framnes Norway.

Hey Mark!! Personally i don't like paksao or to intercet a punch with an open hand. Even if it covers the centreline. I think the open hand, even the hell is too weak against a fast punch. I'd rather use some sort of cover, elbow shaped, like ones you showed us in the video about 'weapon or shield'
It's a streetfight technique video, so one of the first (two) attacker's "punches" might actually be with a knife in their hand, so an open hand would probably be better for isolating the weapon hand I expect. #FIGHTBOSS
Ye Jayk, if i were so lucky to spot a knife in attacker's hand, then yes, i won't use an elbow cover.. i'd run away, and if i could not, then i'd use my forearm to deflect, call it jumsao, call it 360 defense..
