AND there target audience during that period was US TEENAGE (and preteen) GIRLS, so that is WHY you guys get so disgusted with all the LOVE songs. We liked to IMAGINE that THEY were singing those songs TO US, WHO do you think MADE them so WORLD WIDE POPULAR......US GIRLS!!! I Those of us in our middle to late teens, and very early '20s MATURED ALONG with the BEATLES in their songwriting, so their music constantly changed, grew and progressed, just as we fans did. The some time later I was invited to a listening session by other girls in the neighborhood (Bath Beach, Brooklyn,NY) to hear the latest Beatles album. As a young musician I was skeptical beforehand, but I was very impressed with the group compared to music on the the radio for years. In many ways their music was a refreshing evolution of everything that came before them. I am eternally grateful to those girls who led the way. Young women changed music, art, and culture for the better. Now, they might save American democracy from the threat of fascism and tyranny.

The Beatles are the only band I've listened to who can take a mediocre song and raise it above the standard. The originals may be great, but the Beatles made them memorable.

But the rubber soul album and onward is a cultural touchstone for revolutionary music. the first record was amazing but relative to the latter albums it does not come close. Also its a big generalization to assume Im another "moron" who hasn't heard all their work. But even for example, check out how complex their musicianship gets with maccas playing of the root notes to incredible melodic bass lines. thats just one example of how their music changed after this
They were often forced to do covers early in their career because they didn't have the time to write enough songs for the albums. It had to be a quick turnaround so they added covers to reach the number of songs the label wanted.
AND these were ALL COVERS that they did during their gigs BEFORE they were famous. ESPECIALLY covers of CARL PERKINS, BUDDY HOLLY and LITTLE RICHARD, all three were idols of theirs. CARL PERKINS became a good friend to all of them. They also covered some of the Motown Girl Group songs, who they ALSO idolized. The thing is, they did a FANTATIC job on the covers and at times, were BETTER than the original versions. They weren' t "FORCED" by ANYONE to do them. They had done them many many times before in all their pre fame gigs, and knew them well.
Funny fact, Paul wrote I'll follow the sun with 15 years old. And I think people told you before, but until Help! - Rubber Soul, pretty much every song was written by both John and Paul, so when you say you love a song because it's John, or Paul, It's more that it was suit better for either of both to sing but not because is merit of one in particular.

Sometimes I think people loved Rubber Soul so much because with Beatles For Sale, they were scared the Beatles were out of gas. And then Help was okay, but not the best. What a relief Rubber Soul must have been.

Remember the Beatles were a club band that played a wide repertoire of covers. Words of Love is a cover of Buddy Holly and a tribute. They loved classic rock n roll.
WHY? Did you listen to the original versions too? A lot of their covers were fairly close to the originals but it STILL sounded BETTER than the originals, I guess because of THEIR vocals.
I feel like now's probably the time to say this, since you're always wondering who's singing on each song, but obviously The Beatles sang a lot of 3 part harmonies, so you're often hearing John, Paul, and George at the same time. Paul would nearly always sing the highest vocal line and George the lowest. You're right that each Beatle would usually take the lead vocals on their own songs, but some songs are so split down the middle (especially between John and Paul) that the question of who's singing lead becomes kind of pointless. For example Baby's In Black, you're hearing John and Paul equally all throughout. Also this is the album that started having a lot more Folk influences. People tend to split their periods in different ways, like just early and late, or early, middle, and late, but I think the superior way to divide it is like this: • Please Please Me to A Hard Day's Night: lots of just classic Blues influence, with their own brand of Pop-Rock with the vocal harmonies obviously, and oddly enough a few sort of Latin influences (Till There Was You, Devil in Her Heart, all of the percussion on A Hard Day's Night album, etc). • Beatles For Sale to Rubber Soul: Folk influences and more personal songwriting rather than just love songs. • Revolver to Magical Mystery Tour: Psychedelic period. • The White Album to Let It Be: their late period, kind of a melting pot of everything from before, notably a return of straight Blues.

It's just _music,_ then. That said, there is an important distinction between the genre of Folk music and folk music at large. Folk music at large is any popular music, music that transcends recording and sort of just permeates a culture, as though the original writer, artist, or composer doesn't really matter any more. Nursery rhymes like the ABCs (or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, it was originally Ah vous dirai-je, maman), Jazz standards, most Christmas songs, and something like Seven Nation Army (a tune that everyone knows and sings at social events without necessarily knowing where it even comes from) are all folk tunes in that sense. Then there's the Folk genre, which is indeed the one where the music is subordinate to the lyrics - but the music still matters. There are still attributes to the music that are characteristic of Folk rather than Country, Rock, or anything else. That's why the Folky Led Zeppelin songs sound like Folk and not like Country. Or why You've Got to Hide Your Love Away sounds more Folky than Country. Beatles For Sale is when they started to get Folkier as opposed to just Blues and Pop-Rock.

You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) is _not_ a popular folk song, because it hasn't transcended its recording and anyone who knows it knows exactly where it's from as opposed to it being an important part of culture at large; whereas you could easily make the case for Seven Nation Army being a folk tune, like every stadium or playground chant (We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions as well), which is wild given that it's only a mere 20 years old - but it's obviously not part of the Folk genre, it's more Garage Rock. In a similar way, the Pop genre and pop music at large are also different. Like you said, pop music is anything that is popular at a specific time; Jazz was the pop music of the '20s through '40s, Rock n' Roll in the '50s, Folk and Rock in the '60s, Rock and Disco in the '70s, Synth Pop and New Wave in the '80s, Grunge and modern R&B and Hip-Hop in the '90s, EDM and Trap in the 2010s, etc. But Pop as a genre is a much more recent label, and quite a confusing and poorly defined one. The most characteristic aspect of the Pop genre is that it's generally short-form, relatively simple, easily accessible, and more studio and production focused. Ever since the Synth Pop of the '80s, people tend to associate Pop music with synthetic sounds, but simple piano and guitar instrumentation is still typically Pop. The early Beatles songs like I Want to Hold Your Hand and She Loves You were most certainly Pop Rock. They were Blues influenced Rock songs that fit most of the previously listed Pop characteristics. They weren't just Rock n' Roll. Now I don't know why you've just decided that I meant Pop Rock as an insult, but... I didn't? I love The Beatles, stop telling me to "listen to them." For God's sakes. And similarly, The Beatles were for sure one of the first boy bands. That's not an insult, it just depends on how you define "boy band." If it's a musical band entirely comprised on boys that girls go crazy for, then they are certainly one of the first boy bands. If you include "they can't play instruments" in your definition of a boy band, then they're not - but then neither is One Direction... which no one would agree with.
I LOVE "HONEY DON'T" I LOVE how Ringo does it and it's a TRIBUTE to one of the Beatles idols CARL PERKINS who wrote it and sang it ORIGINALLY. It's a WONDERFUL EXAMPLE of "ROCK-A-BILLY" music. It's FUN and RINGO LOVES country and "Rock-a-billy music (I am NOT referring to what "country" music is NOW, it's NOTHING like the COUNTRY music from the '50s and '60s like Carl Perkins, Chet Atkins, etc.

Its crazy because modern Setlist considering a cover, even if the artist wrote it Drake has a song written by Kanye West called Find your love. And a song by The Weeknd called Crew love but whenever Kanye and the Weeknd perform those songs they’re listed as covers
‘What You’re Doing’ is MY JAM! I used to think I was alone in that until I found Twitter accounts dedicated to the song (I’m not joking.) I think you might be missing the fact that Paul and John are singing together most of the time, not just harmonies but also in unison (and George is also singing along in many.) They did that a lot early on. You’ll hear it more when you listen to the singles (on the Past Masters, like “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”) I think more of these songs would grow on you if you saw them perform them live. I love that you needed a smoke break, tho 😂

I'm glad 'I Don't Want To Spoil The Party' got a pass - that was the first song I ever heard by The Beatles when I was 5 years old, and I think I played the song 5 or 6 times before I flipped the single over. It holds a special place with me!

It’s not just that the covers are fillers to complete the album. But even as you mentioned in another video…The Beatles are giving a nod to earlier musicians who inspired them. So regardless if it’s Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins or Buddy Holly…there is that element to the covers. Even though earlier on there were covers picked for them to do. I do understand about just wanting to hear songs written by the Beatles. One other interesting thing about the Beatles inspirations is that they were studying the musicians that came before them and that’s how the Beatles music would evolve. They started using different chord progressions or particular chords and change-ups. There are very detailed analyses of this, but it can feel almost overwhelming with the amount of info out there! Even though I appreciate the hard work of authors and researchers who go into that in depth.:.sometimes I just want to listen to the music. But it was by listening to these other musicians that The Beatles were able to create their own style and continue to evolve and be open to new ideas. And also influence other musicians who came after them as well as encouraging young people in continuing generations to pick up guitar or bass or drum. Not to mention the Beatles own personal experiences and stories and observations of the world as you can tell also influenced their music:-) These covers are just a stepping stone of The Beatles evolution. And they wanted to give credit to the other musicians who came before them/ “you’ve really got a hold on me,” is one of my favorite covers. Smokey Robinson originally sang that. I like hearing him sing it too. It’s lovely all around.

In regards to Beatles For Sale, I think it's worth mentioning about the cover tracks. Firstly, the first two Beatles albums had covers, which was fine because they were considered two growth albums in our minds, but then they released A Hard Day's Night with no covers! It makes you feel like you've graduated! But then, for contractual reasons, they had to throw out another album with half covers again. That's one reason Beatles For Sale can feel like a let down. Follow me here on another defense: Only 8 of the 14 tracks are Beatles songs, so let's throw out these others as just extra fluff, which may be good or bad, but doesn't count as to our overall impression of where the Beatles were at. Now, No Reply is one of my all-time favorite Lennon songs, right up there with Help or In My Life, for me. I'm A Loser is also another amazing Lennon song. Baby's In Black is fun, but a homage track for them. I'll Follow The Sun is a wonderful diddy (not diddly, as my boy Darius often says). Eight Days A Week is an absolute hit that can't be discounted. And then I find myself coming back to Every Little Thing, Spoil The Party, and What You're Doing a lot. Darius, don't write em off! What You're Doing already has that late 60's sound that many bands would be copying shortly.
Yes, "BABY'S IN BLACK" most of us feel that it is a homage to their German photographer friend ASTRID KIRCHERR regarding thier former bandmate and friend STU SUTCLIFFE who was an artist, and fell in love with Astrid, got engaged to her, and left the band to stay in Hamburg, Germany with Astrid and pursue his art education further. He died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage at 21 years old. SHE is the "Baby in Black" and Stu is the one that "will never come back" and the rest of the Beatles themselves were "BLUE" because of Stu's death and Astrid's grief (as well as their own, especially for John)
Keep in mind, the record company wanted them to release 2 albums per year. They were under a ton of pressure to fulfill this obligation, had very little time, and needed a little break. For the period they were going through,.....this is a great album after 4 albums in 2 years.
Words of love featured George’s new 12 string Rickenbacker for that jangly sound that the sixties was noted for. The Beatles and the Byrds both set that Rickenbacker 12 string sound as the mid sixties standard.
Well, it kinda is, since it's about a girl who is still mourning the death of her boyfriend and the singer(s) are getting impatient that she is not putting herself out there. It's kinda douchey.

When he says 'what I can do?', he doesn't mean, what can I do to help her through her grief. He's saying, what can I do to make her see ME instead of thinking about HIM all the time? I think people are interpreting the song through the lens of their understanding of its inspiration. But inspiration and meaning are not the same thing. Because you take for granted that it was inspired by Stu's death, that understanding colours your interpretation of the song. But going from the tone of the lyrics alone, that is not my interpretation. The song itself is quite "mature" in its construction since it's in 3/4 and in a minor key. And the subject matter is certainly more "adult" than most unrequited love songs of the time. It is indeed a beautiful song, with gorgeous harmonies.
@@jnagarya519 Yeah, I love all the three-part harmonies too. I think George said that was the one thing he missed about being in The Beatles. I agree about the Beeb recordings; they are a treasure trove. Speaking of maturity, In My Life is one of the best love songs ever written. One thing I love about John's love songs is that they are not just entreaties or expressions of desire. You get a sense of the presence of the beloved. Here he is singing about past loss and feelings of nostalgia, but he is looking forward to a future with his love. It is hopeful and beautiful.
You are right that "Rock and Roll Music" is a cover, written and originally performed by Chuck Berry. These covers were the songs and songwriters who originally inspired the Beatles to love rock and roll and become performers in their own right. This is what they played on the stage in Liverpool and Germany that made the crowds go wild for them, before they got into writing their own music.Did they improve on the original?Listen to Chuck Berry's version, and you be the judge.

Yes, I agree with your rating of the songs, which is why I think the Beatles name this album, "Beatles For Sale". They may have thought they sold themselves to the record company. And needed to take more control of their career. Well, that's how I feel when I look at the songs and the title of the album. I can't help but wonder if they were being marketed to death at that time and thought others had more control of the Beatles than the Beatles did. I have no real data, just my poor view of the songs and the album title. And suspicious thoughts aren't proof of anything.
At this point you're definitely seeing a shift in their music, experimenting with different sounds. I don't blame you for this one but Im very excited for the next few albums.
My favorite song on the album is Every Little Thing. The hits on the tympani (a first in rock music?) just send me, and have for 6 decades every time I hear this song. I love it.
It’s hard for those of us who have been listening to these songs for 50 years to have as much of an “objective” opinion as you. With that being said, I like your insight even though I don’t always understand why you like or dislike some songs 😆. Maybe listening to them more will change your mind, who knows? My favorite Beatles songs has changed through the years. And I LOVE some of the covers they do, especially the ones Ringo sings. The originals were all popular at the time, so… Paul’s aunt once asked him if he ever wrote anything but love songs, that’s when he wrote Paperback Writer.
I completely appreciate your honest reaction, and the context you got beforehand really explains why this feels tired. You can hear the split between the covers and their trying to find their own voices/style - but they needed more time in studio, and just didn’t have it.
The originals on this album plus the singles are the best yet for the Beatles. The lack luster covers are what drag this album down. A couple more weeks of work and a few more originals, or at least a better choice of covers like some of the kick ass proto-punk tracks off Live at the Star Club, and Beatles For Sale could have been their best early period album. BTW, you need to check out Live at the Star Club aka The Star Club Tapes. It's a low-fi live recording of the Beatles in Hamburg, shortly after Ringo joined the band. Most of the songs are covers but man, do they rock. Real punk energy 14 years before punk. It's a real shame that these songs were never recorded for an album. So much better than the covers they eventually chose. Cheers!
I personally think the main thing that drags it down is the actual order of the tracks. Aside from the first 2, the rest of the album needs to be organised. I think most of the songs themselves are enjoyable (even if they do sound a little rushed and tired), but the track order was not great...
The Beatles original compositions on this album are stellar. But there a few things to consider about the covers on it beyond The Beatles need for filler. It was common in the sixties for artists to cover each others songs, especially in the early to mid sixties. It was actually less common back then for artists to write and record their own songs. That changed with The Beatles and Bob Dylan and others. The covers served to remind fans that The Beatles themselves were fans too and the songs they chose to cover gave their fans an idea of the music that inspired them -- Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, etc. So years, decades, later, those covers would serve to point fans to the music of artists from the past that they might not be familiar with but would likely enjoy. And because The Beatles recorded covers themselves it more or less gave permission to other artists to cover their songs as well without losing credibility as artists. And they did. Check out Aretha Franklin's cover of "Let It Be" and Wilson Pickett's cover of "Hey Jude" for two excellent examples of that.
We all know the story.....the Fabs were fried from years of non-stop performances on stage, on radio and on TV. This is decades.....more than a few.....before people could record themselves on a phone and post it worldwide. In the pre-Internet era, a band had to actually appear in front of people at a place. OK, I'll get off the soapbox now. Beatles for Sale suffers when compared to the group's other albums.....justifiably so. Having said that: No Reply, I'm a Loser, Eight Days a Week and especially I Don't Want to Spoil the Party are all top-shelf Lennon-McCartney. Deeper cuts like Every Little Thing, Baby's In Black and What You're Doing are delicious ear candy. The covers of Chuck's Rock and Roll Music and Richard's Kansas City are spine-tingling. So yeah.....even though I bash BFS, there are still magical moments.....more than a few. In other words, even when the Fabs are having a bad day.....they're still great. Great video once again!
Chuck Berry's original of "Rock and Roll Music" is much slower, The Beatles version is awesome balls to the wall Rock and Roll! You're entitled to your opinion.
Man. This is one of my most favorite Beatles albums. What you are actually hearing is exhaustion from being Beatles. This is the album where Lennon began his Dylan lyric style writing.
As advertised, Rock and Roll Music was a cover and that should not cloud your assessment of the performance. It was a one take masterpiece- as close to a live performance albeit in the studio as you can get. Lennon’s vocals and interpretation are sublime along with the tightness of the band. There aren’t too many genuine “rock and roll” tracks with the raw integrity, energy and elevation to go with this one. Paul’s Long Tall Sally and John’s Twist and Shout were other honourable mentions of one take studio gems.
Considering the pressure the record company put them under to produce albums I'm amazed there are any good songs at all in the first 2 yrs. There's an old saying in the music business. "You have your whole life to write your first album.. after that it's a business" It's hard to criticize any work knowing the conditions...Yet The Beatles produced when others couldn't even dream of such a schedule. That said... Great reaction! I really enjoy your takes...you're an insightful man.
a lot of classic songs like hard days night and eight days a week were little quips ringo would say, the others called them ringoisms and they made for perfect song ideas
even though this album is pretty low on most people's lists, most of the songs here are ones that I really remember among their early/pre-rubber soul tracks
Yes it's a cover... but can we just acknowledge how Paul absolutely KILLS IT vocally on Kansas City?! My word. 🔸️Honestly, I feel like this whole album grows on you over time when you give it multiple listens. Considering the album in its totality, it perfectly encapsulates what was going on in their real lives - how hard the grind was on their psyches and their bodies and their voices. That's one of the amazing things about the Beatles canon - you can hear their personal journeys reflected in the music so perfectly. They showed us the inside of their souls with their songs, which is what was so revolutionary about them. They felt emotionally accessible in a way no other bands did. Incredible.
Really insightful (again) reaction. This was a filler album, and without No Reply, I’m a Loser, Eight Days a Week and Everybody’s trying to be my Baby, it’s a cover extravaganza. No surprise they quit touring and responded with Rubber Soul, their first real artistic statement.
The cover speaks volumes. They were four tired young men. Literally worn out. I love your insights into the Beatles albums. Especially the Abbey Road one. I'm not sure how I found your page but thankfully i did. I have listened to other people's reactions to the Beatles. Yours is head and shoulders above them all. I love the insights you provide. Never a dull moment as Rod Stewart would say. My favorite Beatles album has always been the white album. Abbey Road a very close second. I like the white album because it's a double album and eclectic. I'm glad you liked Octopus's Garden lol on Abbey Road. The medley on A.R is superb and unmatched by anyone.
Honey Don't was sung by Lennon before he gave it to Ringo, you can hear John's rendition on The Beatles debut and second 1962 live BBC radio performances (w/Pete Best).
The covers that The Beatles did on this album are what inspired them into what they are. This album is the peak of stage 1 before Rubber Sole and beyond. Do some research into Carl Perkins and Buddy Holly
If you ever question, if you hear ANY rasp, it’s John and Never George. George had a clear almost gentle voice. That’s what I did when I questioned who the lead singer was. Enjoy this ride 😊
Take a close look at the album art. They look tired and like they are losing their youthful luster. I love so many songs on this album. A little over criticized. Considering the pressure and tiredness they endured they write some kick ass tunes that most would kill to write.

We liked to IMAGINE that THEY were singing those songs TO US, WHO do you think MADE them so WORLD WIDE POPULAR......US GIRLS!!! The some time later I was invited to a listening session by other girls in the neighborhood (Bath Beach, Brooklyn,NY) to hear the latest Beatles album. As a young musician I was skeptical beforehand, but I was very impressed with the group compared to music on the the radio for years. In many ways their music was a refreshing evolution of everything that came before them. I am eternally grateful to those girls who led the way.
Young women changed music, art, and culture for the better. Now, they might save American democracy from the threat of fascism and tyranny.
And heck, they even toured for over a month without RIngo when he had his tonsils removed...there was zero time to delay anything.
Macca wrote I’ll Follow The Sun when he was FIFTEEN! The word genius is overused but Paul McCartney is a genius.

When my friends got it for me from ENGLAND back then and had it sent to the USA, for my birthday, WE PLAYED IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER, LOVING EVERY MINUTE of it!! . NOT NICE to trash songs by the GREAT CARL PERKINS, and BUDDY HOLLY, who the BEATLES IDOLIZED and covered both there songs in their set lists even before they became famous. Carl Perkins ended up being a very good friend to ALL the Beatles. The Beatles are the only band I've listened to who can take a mediocre song and raise it above the standard. The originals may be great, but the Beatles made them memorable.

This Beatle release had lots of covers. So it's not pure Beatle creation. I think you felt that by reaction. But even then, they made solid cover versions.

But the rubber soul album and onward is a cultural touchstone for revolutionary music. the first record was amazing but relative to the latter albums it does not come close. Also its a big generalization to assume Im another "moron" who hasn't heard all their work. But even for example, check out how complex their musicianship gets with maccas playing of the root notes to incredible melodic bass lines. thats just one example of how their music changed after this

They were often forced to do covers early in their career because they didn't have the time to write enough songs for the albums. It had to be a quick turnaround so they added covers to reach the number of songs the label wanted.
All bands did covers in 1964
AND these were ALL COVERS that they did during their gigs BEFORE they were famous. ESPECIALLY covers of CARL PERKINS, BUDDY HOLLY and LITTLE RICHARD, all three were idols of theirs. CARL PERKINS became a good friend to all of them. They also covered some of the Motown Girl Group songs, who they ALSO idolized. The thing is, they did a FANTATIC job on the covers and at times, were BETTER than the original versions. They weren' t "FORCED" by ANYONE to do them. They had done them many many times before in all their pre fame gigs, and knew them well.
Funny fact, Paul wrote I'll follow the sun with 15 years old.
And I think people told you before, but until Help! - Rubber Soul, pretty much every song was written by both John and Paul, so when you say you love a song because it's John, or Paul, It's more that it was suit better for either of both to sing but not because is merit of one in particular.

Sometimes I think people loved Rubber Soul so much because with Beatles For Sale, they were scared the Beatles were out of gas. And then Help was okay, but not the best. What a relief Rubber Soul must have been.

This album quickly grew on me a lot. I just love it.
I DO TOO, "ed.z" I loved it from the first playing back then, and just loved it more and more each time I DO play it.
Remember the Beatles were a club band that played a wide repertoire of covers. Words of Love is a cover of Buddy Holly and a tribute. They loved classic rock n roll.

WHY? Did you listen to the original versions too? A lot of their covers were fairly close to the originals but it STILL sounded BETTER than the originals, I guess because of THEIR vocals.

Paul’s harmonies, especially on the “I nearly died” part make it great imo
I feel like now's probably the time to say this, since you're always wondering who's singing on each song, but obviously The Beatles sang a lot of 3 part harmonies, so you're often hearing John, Paul, and George at the same time. Paul would nearly always sing the highest vocal line and George the lowest. You're right that each Beatle would usually take the lead vocals on their own songs, but some songs are so split down the middle (especially between John and Paul) that the question of who's singing lead becomes kind of pointless. For example Baby's In Black, you're hearing John and Paul equally all throughout.
Also this is the album that started having a lot more Folk influences. People tend to split their periods in different ways, like just early and late, or early, middle, and late, but I think the superior way to divide it is like this:
• Please Please Me to A Hard Day's Night: lots of just classic Blues influence, with their own brand of Pop-Rock with the vocal harmonies obviously, and oddly enough a few sort of Latin influences (Till There Was You, Devil in Her Heart, all of the percussion on A Hard Day's Night album, etc).
• Beatles For Sale to Rubber Soul: Folk influences and more personal songwriting rather than just love songs.
• Revolver to Magical Mystery Tour: Psychedelic period.
• The White Album to Let It Be: their late period, kind of a melting pot of everything from before, notably a return of straight Blues.

That's a completely useless distinction because it's... not a distinction. It's just _music,_ then.
That said, there is an important distinction between the genre of Folk music and folk music at large. Folk music at large is any popular music, music that transcends recording and sort of just permeates a culture, as though the original writer, artist, or composer doesn't really matter any more. Nursery rhymes like the ABCs (or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, it was originally Ah vous dirai-je, maman), Jazz standards, most Christmas songs, and something like Seven Nation Army (a tune that everyone knows and sings at social events without necessarily knowing where it even comes from) are all folk tunes in that sense.
Then there's the Folk genre, which is indeed the one where the music is subordinate to the lyrics - but the music still matters. There are still attributes to the music that are characteristic of Folk rather than Country, Rock, or anything else. That's why the Folky Led Zeppelin songs sound like Folk and not like Country. Or why You've Got to Hide Your Love Away sounds more Folky than Country. Beatles For Sale is when they started to get Folkier as opposed to just Blues and Pop-Rock.

You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) is _not_ a popular folk song, because it hasn't transcended its recording and anyone who knows it knows exactly where it's from as opposed to it being an important part of culture at large; whereas you could easily make the case for Seven Nation Army being a folk tune, like every stadium or playground chant (We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions as well), which is wild given that it's only a mere 20 years old - but it's obviously not part of the Folk genre, it's more Garage Rock.
In a similar way, the Pop genre and pop music at large are also different. Like you said, pop music is anything that is popular at a specific time; Jazz was the pop music of the '20s through '40s, Rock n' Roll in the '50s, Folk and Rock in the '60s, Rock and Disco in the '70s, Synth Pop and New Wave in the '80s, Grunge and modern R&B and Hip-Hop in the '90s, EDM and Trap in the 2010s, etc.
But Pop as a genre is a much more recent label, and quite a confusing and poorly defined one. The most characteristic aspect of the Pop genre is that it's generally short-form, relatively simple, easily accessible, and more studio and production focused. Ever since the Synth Pop of the '80s, people tend to associate Pop music with synthetic sounds, but simple piano and guitar instrumentation is still typically Pop.
The early Beatles songs like I Want to Hold Your Hand and She Loves You were most certainly Pop Rock. They were Blues influenced Rock songs that fit most of the previously listed Pop characteristics. They weren't just Rock n' Roll.
Now I don't know why you've just decided that I meant Pop Rock as an insult, but... I didn't? I love The Beatles, stop telling me to "listen to them." For God's sakes.
And similarly, The Beatles were for sure one of the first boy bands. That's not an insult, it just depends on how you define "boy band." If it's a musical band entirely comprised on boys that girls go crazy for, then they are certainly one of the first boy bands. If you include "they can't play instruments" in your definition of a boy band, then they're not - but then neither is One Direction... which no one would agree with.
The Beatles received the largest pay in music history for playing Kansas City. The cover was just an acknowledgement and thank you for the fans there.

I LOVE "HONEY DON'T" I LOVE how Ringo does it and it's a TRIBUTE to one of the Beatles idols CARL PERKINS who wrote it and sang it ORIGINALLY. It's a WONDERFUL EXAMPLE of "ROCK-A-BILLY" music. It's FUN and RINGO LOVES country and "Rock-a-billy music (I am NOT referring to what "country" music is NOW, it's NOTHING like the COUNTRY music from the '50s and '60s like Carl Perkins, Chet Atkins, etc.

I think you might be missing the fact that Paul and John are singing together most of the time, not just harmonies but also in unison (and George is also singing along in many.) They did that a lot early on. You’ll hear it more when you listen to the singles (on the Past Masters, like “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”)
I think more of these songs would grow on you if you saw them perform them live. I love that you needed a smoke break, tho 😂

I'm glad 'I Don't Want To Spoil The Party' got a pass - that was the first song I ever heard by The Beatles when I was 5 years old, and I think I played the song 5 or 6 times before I flipped the single over. It holds a special place with me!

I am decades old and a huge Beatles fan. Most of these songs I never heard before. The only songs that I am familiar with and that I liked were, I'm a loser, I'll follow the sun and 8 days a week.

It’s not just that the covers are fillers to complete the album. But even as you mentioned in another video…The Beatles are giving a nod to earlier musicians who inspired them. So regardless if it’s Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins or Buddy Holly…there is that element to the covers. Even though earlier on there were covers picked for them to do.
I do understand about just wanting to hear songs written by the Beatles.
One other interesting thing about the Beatles inspirations is that they were studying the musicians that came before them and that’s how the Beatles music would evolve. They started using different chord progressions or particular chords and change-ups. There are very detailed analyses of this, but it can feel almost overwhelming with the amount of info out there! Even though I appreciate the hard work of authors and researchers who go into that in depth.:.sometimes I just want to listen to the music.
But it was by listening to these other musicians that The Beatles were able to create their own style and continue to evolve and be open to new ideas. And also influence other musicians who came after them as well as encouraging young people in continuing generations to pick up guitar or bass or drum. Not to mention the Beatles own personal experiences and stories and observations of the world as you can tell also influenced their music:-)
These covers are just a stepping stone of The Beatles evolution. And they wanted to give credit to the other musicians who came before them/
“you’ve really got a hold on me,” is one of my favorite covers. Smokey Robinson originally sang that. I like hearing him sing it too. It’s lovely all around.

In regards to Beatles For Sale, I think it's worth mentioning about the cover tracks. Firstly, the first two Beatles albums had covers, which was fine because they were considered two growth albums in our minds, but then they released A Hard Day's Night with no covers! It makes you feel like you've graduated! But then, for contractual reasons, they had to throw out another album with half covers again. That's one reason Beatles For Sale can feel like a let down. Follow me here on another defense:
Only 8 of the 14 tracks are Beatles songs, so let's throw out these others as just extra fluff, which may be good or bad, but doesn't count as to our overall impression of where the Beatles were at.
Now, No Reply is one of my all-time favorite Lennon songs, right up there with Help or In My Life, for me.
I'm A Loser is also another amazing Lennon song.
Baby's In Black is fun, but a homage track for them.
I'll Follow The Sun is a wonderful diddy (not diddly, as my boy Darius often says).
Eight Days A Week is an absolute hit that can't be discounted.
And then I find myself coming back to Every Little Thing, Spoil The Party, and What You're Doing a lot. Darius, don't write em off! What You're Doing already has that late 60's sound that many bands would be copying shortly.
Yes, "BABY'S IN BLACK" most of us feel that it is a homage to their German photographer friend ASTRID KIRCHERR regarding thier former bandmate and friend STU SUTCLIFFE who was an artist, and fell in love with Astrid, got engaged to her, and left the band to stay in Hamburg, Germany with Astrid and pursue his art education further. He died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage at 21 years old. SHE is the "Baby in Black" and Stu is the one that "will never come back" and the rest of the Beatles themselves were "BLUE" because of Stu's death and Astrid's grief (as well as their own, especially for John)
Keep in mind, the record company wanted them to release 2 albums per year. They were under a ton of pressure to fulfill this obligation, had very little time, and needed a little break. For the period they were going through,.....this is a great album after 4 albums in 2 years.

I think people are interpreting the song through the lens of their understanding of its inspiration. But inspiration and meaning are not the same thing. Because you take for granted that it was inspired by Stu's death, that understanding colours your interpretation of the song. But going from the tone of the lyrics alone, that is not my interpretation.
The song itself is quite "mature" in its construction since it's in 3/4 and in a minor key. And the subject matter is certainly more "adult" than most unrequited love songs of the time. It is indeed a beautiful song, with gorgeous harmonies.

Speaking of maturity, In My Life is one of the best love songs ever written. One thing I love about John's love songs is that they are not just entreaties or expressions of desire. You get a sense of the presence of the beloved. Here he is singing about past loss and feelings of nostalgia, but he is looking forward to a future with his love. It is hopeful and beautiful.

You are right that "Rock and Roll Music" is a cover, written and originally performed by Chuck Berry. These covers were the songs and songwriters who originally inspired the Beatles to love rock and roll and become performers in their own right. This is what they played on the stage in Liverpool and Germany that made the crowds go wild for them, before they got into writing their own music.Did they improve on the original?Listen to Chuck Berry's version, and you be the judge.

Yes, I agree with your rating of the songs, which is why I think the Beatles name this album, "Beatles For Sale". They may have thought they sold themselves to the record company. And needed to take more control of their career. Well, that's how I feel when I look at the songs and the title of the album. I can't help but wonder if they were being marketed to death at that time and thought others had more control of the Beatles than the Beatles did.
I have no real data, just my poor view of the songs and the album title. And suspicious thoughts aren't proof of anything.
At this point you're definitely seeing a shift in their music, experimenting with different sounds. I don't blame you for this one but Im very excited for the next few albums.

My favorite song on the album is Every Little Thing. The hits on the tympani (a first in rock music?) just send me, and have for 6 decades every time I hear this song. I love it.
It’s hard for those of us who have been listening to these songs for 50 years to have as much of an “objective” opinion as you. With that being said, I like your insight even though I don’t always understand why you like or dislike some songs 😆. Maybe listening to them more will change your mind, who knows? My favorite Beatles songs has changed through the years.

I completely appreciate your honest reaction, and the context you got beforehand really explains why this feels tired. You can hear the split between the covers and their trying to find their own voices/style - but they needed more time in studio, and just didn’t have it.
The originals on this album plus the singles are the best yet for the Beatles. The lack luster covers are what drag this album down.
A couple more weeks of work and a few more originals, or at least a better choice of covers like some of the kick ass proto-punk tracks off Live at the Star Club, and Beatles For Sale could have been their best early period album.
BTW, you need to check out Live at the Star Club aka The Star Club Tapes. It's a low-fi live recording of the Beatles in Hamburg, shortly after Ringo joined the band.
Most of the songs are covers but man, do they rock. Real punk energy 14 years before punk. It's a real shame that these songs were never recorded for an album. So much better than the covers they eventually chose. Cheers!
I personally think the main thing that drags it down is the actual order of the tracks. Aside from the first 2, the rest of the album needs to be organised.
I think most of the songs themselves are enjoyable (even if they do sound a little rushed and tired), but the track order was not great...

Eight Days a Week is the first song where the Beatles really come into their sound in my opinion. Leads great into their further development on Help!

The Beatles original compositions on this album are stellar. But there a few things to consider about the covers on it beyond The Beatles need for filler. It was common in the sixties for artists to cover each others songs, especially in the early to mid sixties. It was actually less common back then for artists to write and record their own songs. That changed with The Beatles and Bob Dylan and others. The covers served to remind fans that The Beatles themselves were fans too and the songs they chose to cover gave their fans an idea of the music that inspired them -- Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, etc. So years, decades, later, those covers would serve to point fans to the music of artists from the past that they might not be familiar with but would likely enjoy. And because The Beatles recorded covers themselves it more or less gave permission to other artists to cover their songs as well without losing credibility as artists. And they did. Check out Aretha Franklin's cover of "Let It Be" and Wilson Pickett's cover of "Hey Jude" for two excellent examples of that.
We all know the story.....the Fabs were fried from years of non-stop performances on stage, on radio and on TV. This is decades.....more than a few.....before people could record themselves on a phone and post it worldwide. In the pre-Internet era, a band had to actually appear in front of people at a place. OK, I'll get off the soapbox now.
Beatles for Sale suffers when compared to the group's other albums.....justifiably so. Having said that: No Reply, I'm a Loser, Eight Days a Week and especially I Don't Want to Spoil the Party are all top-shelf Lennon-McCartney. Deeper cuts like Every Little Thing, Baby's In Black and What You're Doing are delicious ear candy. The covers of Chuck's Rock and Roll Music and Richard's Kansas City are spine-tingling. So yeah.....even though I bash BFS, there are still magical moments.....more than a few. In other words, even when the Fabs are having a bad day.....they're still great.

Chuck Berry's original of "Rock and Roll Music" is much slower, The Beatles version is awesome balls to the wall Rock and Roll! You're entitled to your opinion.
Man. This is one of my most favorite Beatles albums. What you are actually hearing is exhaustion from being Beatles. This is the album where Lennon began his Dylan lyric style writing.
As advertised, Rock and Roll Music was a cover and that should not cloud your assessment of the performance. It was a one take masterpiece- as close to a live performance albeit in the studio as you can get. Lennon’s vocals and interpretation are sublime along with the tightness of the band. There aren’t too many genuine “rock and roll” tracks with the raw integrity, energy and elevation to go with this one.
Paul’s Long Tall Sally and John’s Twist and Shout were other honourable mentions of one take studio gems.
Considering the pressure the record company put them under to produce albums I'm amazed there are any good songs at all in the first 2 yrs.
There's an old saying in the music business. "You have your whole life to write your first album.. after that it's a business"
It's hard to criticize any work knowing the conditions...Yet The Beatles produced when others couldn't even dream of such a schedule.

"No Reply" was John with lead vocals, but Paul harmonized and carried John through the song, as Paul ALWAYS did.

🔸️Honestly, I feel like this whole album grows on you over time when you give it multiple listens. Considering the album in its totality, it perfectly encapsulates what was going on in their real lives - how hard the grind was on their psyches and their bodies and their voices. That's one of the amazing things about the Beatles canon - you can hear their personal journeys reflected in the music so perfectly. They showed us the inside of their souls with their songs, which is what was so revolutionary about them. They felt emotionally accessible in a way no other bands did. Incredible.

Really insightful (again) reaction. This was a filler album, and without No Reply, I’m a Loser, Eight Days a Week and Everybody’s trying to be my Baby, it’s a cover extravaganza. No surprise they quit touring and responded with Rubber Soul, their first real artistic statement.
The cover speaks volumes. They were four tired young men. Literally worn out.

My favorite Beatles album has always been the white album. Abbey Road a very close second. I like the white album because it's a double album and eclectic. I'm glad you liked Octopus's Garden lol on Abbey Road. The medley on A.R is superb and unmatched by anyone.
Early George does sound a lot like John singing with a slight cold, so I wouldn't beat yourself up not being able to distinguish them.
Honey Don't was sung by Lennon before he gave it to Ringo, you can hear John's rendition on The Beatles debut and second 1962 live BBC radio performances (w/Pete Best).
