"This album is a beautiful mess". That was a perfect way to describe it! It is eclectic, at times weird, to be sure, but it's also got some all-time classics on it! The Beatles were fearless, and they also knew how to poke fun at themselves and everyone else, besides! They wanted to get away, it appears, from the artifice of the "Sgt. Peppers"-mode of production and just strip it all down and do some crazy songs. The White album is not my favorite Beatles album but that doesn't mean it doesn't still have some of the greatest tunes of their catalog!
Huge Beatles fan here. My "favorite Beatles album" varies depends upon my mood. If I want eclectic, it's the White Album. If I want a glistening, polished diamond, then I go for "Abbey Road."
The “wooo ooo oooos” in Back in the USSR reference bands like The Beach Boys. Who had a California surf sound. (If you look up there song “I Get Around” you’ll see what I mean). But the Beatles added some irony to it and made it about Communist USSR instead of the USA.
The connection, other than Paul being a huge fan of the Beach Boys, is Mike Love, who was and is a member of the Beach Boys was at the ashram with the Beatles at that time.
Your ears aren’t wrong: It feels disjointed because there was very little collaboration on this album. More double tracking of individual singers’s voices than the Beatles usual three-part harmonies. They were doing their own things in the studio, and booking separate rooms just to get music recorded. They really gave their all to make a good album for Abbey Road, but there are some gems here. And a side note that I’m sure others will tell you: Eric Clapton plays the lead guitar solo in While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
Thanks, I had no idea about the lack of collaboration. But I do remember buying a copy when it was released, the record shop did not bother to put their stocks of album in the rack because it appeared that EVERYBODY going into the shop was buying the album. Nice timing with the lead up to Christmas!
Agreed. I prefer the original everything. I was a Beatlemanic from the age of 2 and listened to them in real time ... They were the soundtrack of my childhood.
John had said that he figured out that the Walrus is the villain in the story "The Walrus and the Carpenter" by Lewis Carol. In a different interview he said that Paul should have the moniker of Walrus because he was leading the group in the end days (i.e. that Paul was the villain).
As a middle-aged white dude who grew up loving these Beatles albums and other classic rock albums, I want to tell you how much I appreciate your gut reactions as a person who has never heard this stuff before. I find that you are very insightul about what you're hearing - much moreso than I was when I first listened. Plus you make me laugh :-) I feel like I'm with an old friend getting to re-live hearing these songs for the first time. Thank you for that. Keep doing what you're doing.
Thank you 🙏🏾 The Beatles have done so much for me in terms of opening up my mind to a world of music outside of Hip-Hop, I'm glad you can feel that passion!
It is written in a Stride Piano style, one of the precursors to rock and roll and rhythm and blues. It was a style from the 1920s, just after jazz started being a thing. Martha was Paul's dog.
Happiness is a warm Gun is John Lennon, it is one of his best vocals ever, listen to it again and just listen to the vocals especially in the last part
White album and warm gun refer to Lennons heroin addiction also listen to his "Cold Turkey" about withdrawal not on any album along with " Instant Karma"
That's Clapton on lead guitar on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. George, sensing that having a guest sit in would put everyone on their best behavior, invited his fiend Eric to the session. It worked.
Black bird was song of encouragement written by Paul to the American black women. A very British nickname for a woman is a bird. Remember, there were protests on multiple fronts during the sixties. Hippies protesting the Vietnam War, women marching for equal rights in the Women's Liberation movement, and blacks marching for the Civil Rights movement. The leaders of the civil rights were mostly black men and women's liberation were dominated by white women. Paul said he was watching the news and saw all these beautiful blackbirds in the background and wanted to encourage them that it was their time too to be spreading their wings to shine.
@@cmonman3639 Bird is considered offensive nowadays because any nickname becomes offensive to the younger, politically correct generation for some reason. It used to be a term of endearment for a woman (especially a younger woman). But whatever. Get mad about it, society.
@@JJJJJVVVVVLLLLL Okay. I couldn't tell you. I heard him say this in an interview about 30 years ago. Seems a bit cynical to just dismiss it as bullshit. Your inclination to not give people the benefit of a doubt is probably a safe shell to protect you in today's climate. I do it too sometimes.
@@JJJJJVVVVVLLLLL I like the saying, it means whatever you think it means to you. Sometimes you hear an artist say what a song is about years after you have already decided what it means and you think, that's not right. 😆. Maybe he was inspired by a black woman in the news and decided to write a song, but then the song writing process turned it into what it became. I just don't think he's one that would make it all up to try to appear righteous somehow. Or another idea is that human memory becomes very flawed over time. Some news clip he saw of a civil rights march might have been overdubbed with the song and his mind merged the clip as his original inspiration. Anyway, it's a nice song.
@@JJJJJVVVVVLLLLL Well, now, "he's lying... pure bullshit" you assert, which strikes me as arrogant, abusive, and ignorant. Since you're certain of so much, you can explain to us why, when the song was newborn back in *1968,* Paul told Donovan at Abbey Road that he did mean the blackbird to symbolise a black woman and that he was inspired to write it after reading about American race riots. This is in a taped conversation during the Mary Hopkin 'Postcard' sessions that you can easily find on UA-cam. Note that Paul demo'd Blackbird for the Beatles at Esher on May 29 1968, only a few weeks after Martin Luther King was shot. Does any of that mean it is solely and literally "about" black activism? No, no more than it is literally and solely about the common blackbird (turdus merula). It isn't politics or ornithology. It's a poetical *metaphor*. As Paul said, "it's a bit more symbolic than that", or as you yourself suggest, it is "broad and universal". Yes. A poetic metaphor typically has superposed meanings, but one of the meanings - and a seminal one for the author, as Paul proveably confirmed back in 1968 - was US civil rights abuses.
This album shows off the Beatles ability to write songs in several genres: rock and roll, ballads, music hall sing alongs, country western, blues music, whimsical tunes, lullabies, pop, and music and one song in old-timey style like an old 78 rpm record.
George Orwellian Animal Farm type stuff going on there and it makes the track incredible to listen to for that I love the “as they eat their bacon” part. It shows the cutthroat critique in an equally in your face/subtle way at the same time
Darius---loving your sharing time with us, bro. PLEASE locate PRINCE playing guitar on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"; it's easy to find on UA-cam. It's very popular, quite hot, Tom Petty on vocals. It's killer.
@@williamwallace2325 Prince is good, but I find his lead guitar work to be a little quick -- compared to the much longer solos rock stars had done in the 70s and 80s.
Thank you. Good to get your opinion. But do ck out that video sometime---it's got Tom Petty singing, George Harrison's son also, some great famous players, too. AND Prince's solo is good and long in this performance. Even people who would say Clapton's rendition of the song is best, they think this one is amazing Thanks. @@morpher44
I am 68 and I have loved the Beatles since I was 8 and they were on The Ed Sullivan Show. I am really enjoying your reactions to their music from a young person’s perspective! IMO, The Beatles are the greatest band of all time!
With regard to Bungalo Bill, it was based off a real person they met while they were staying with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India. They were on a meditation retreat and feeling very connected to the world and nature, and there was this British dude Bill who also happened to be staying there on a meditation retreat. Bill had brought his hunting equipment as he also wanted to combine his meditation trip with a hunting trip, and he ended up killing a tiger. He came back and tried to brag about it to the Yogi and the beatles but they ended up just very disappointed in him. They wrote that song about Bill, who years later after hearing the song about him, rethought his hunting and decided it was not right what he had done. There is a great documentary called Meeting the Beatles in India which I highly recommend for some context about the White Album, which they wrote during and right after their trip to India. The documentary is on one of the streaming services, I forget.
Funniest part is, Bill was there with his mom, who was super controlling, and was basically a giant wet blanket on the whole scene. If you know the story of this, it makes the song so hilarious.
@strikerbowls791 I get it because it's definitely very low on my list of favorite White Album songs. Thats partly due to it intentionally written to be a sort of kids song, and any song written to be a kids song is not going to be my favorite, but it was successful in what it set out to accomplish. You have to at least admit that the final "Bill!" which leads into While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a pretty cool transition.
Dear Prudence was about Mia Farrow’s younger sister Prudence who accompanied them to India. Supposedly she went so deep into a meditative trance that they had trouble bringing her out of it.
I read she had been sexually harrassed by someone (Maharishi?) and was feeling upset and hesitatent to leave her bungalow. So John coaxed her out by grabbing a guitar and starting sing and compose this song spontaneously...
@@Ideas4GoogleI think that rumor has been refuted since then. My understanding is that she was thought to be overly serious about her studies and meditation.
Martha My Dear is Paul singing about his dog Martha. She was a sheepdog , he took her everywhere, sometimes you can see her in pictures of the Beatles.
Gotta advertise the prince version Every beatle fan has to watch it at least once a month and keep reminding everyone around them that this solo exists 😂
The reason some people say The White Album is trash is because it’s the most disjointed of their albums. With albums like Abbey Road, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s the whole thing flows together very well. In the White Album it’s verrrry long and the songs don’t really flow well together. HOWEVER since it is so long, it has the highest quantity of bangers out of any Beatles album imo. So if you wanna look at it that way then it is one of their best.
I would argue that it actually flows pretty well in spite of how varied it is. Maybe listening to it on vinyl helps, but all four sides generally have a distinct feel. Side 1 front loads a lot of their more single type tracks, side 2 has a sort of folksy energy, side 3 is heavy on hard rock, then side 4 lowers the energy and shifts into a darker atmosphere with Revolution 9 as its climactic moment. These are all generalizations ofc, each side throws you a curveballs to keep things interesting/weird, but it all feels very cohesive for me.
The Beatles to me are like 4 seasons in one day. Just when you think you can describe them they change the scene, and then again and again, and there's something about each season we all love. Love your reaction to this amazing band.
It's fantastic to see younger generations open to classic rock music. I'm a 1st generation Beatles fan @ 70 yrs old. I was 10 yrs old when they came to the USA.
I don't know how to express my joy over this reaction of yours! It's so damn honest and heartfelt and spontaneous that I get all warm inside. Here I am, a guy from Sweden, probably twice as old as you, who first listened to this album back in 1975 (it was the first Beatles album that i bought, recommended by my music teacher) and I had close to exact the same reaction to it, as you, nearly 50 years later!!! Amazing!! But Beatles are amazing!! Peace and love, man!!
Fun fact about the White Album's sessions: About halfway through the recording sessions Ringo quit the Beatles after recieving too many directions from the rest of the group. Ringo and his family flew to Greece for a vacation. While in Greece Ringo was stoned and wrote Octopus's Garden after learing about how octopi will pick up rocks and garbage and make it into their own little garden in the sand. Back in the studio, the rest of the Beatles recorded "Back in the USSR" and "Dear Prudence" without Ringo and had Paul on drums instead. They felt bad and realized they needed Ringo in the band, so they sent Ringo a telegram and convinced him to come back. When Ringo returned, he was greeted with boquets of flowers on his drum set.
I’m glad that not only did you go back and hear “Her Majesty” but you showed us the reaction. I think what people want most is to make sure you hear EVERYTHING! God forbid if you cut off “Helter Skelter” early though, I can’t help you there, you’re on your own! 😆😆😆
Yeah, if you cut off "Helter Skelter", then you must go over and listen to "Mr. Manson" by Klaatu. Many people thought Klaatu might be the Beatles. It wasn't.
The reason why Her Majesty is at the end of the medley is because Paul originally recorded it before Golden Slumbers and wanted it to be there, but the band decided to cut out the tape of the song and wanted it to be trashed, but it was stored at the end of the whole tape for the medley just in case. After listening to the medley and after The End, Her Majesty played out of nowhere (since it was saved for later at the end of the tape) and Paul burst into laughter. They decided to keep it at the end, as a little joke.
You are so entertaining! Great reaction. And you nailed it - this is where tempers started flaring (Yoko,) so they recorded much of it separately. “Beautiful mess” is the perfect description. And yes, Paul wrote ‘Blackbird’ about civil rights (you sensed that.) Crazy how powerful his voice, guitar and toe tap can be. ‘Martha’ was Paul’s dog (love that song) and ‘Guitar Gently Weeps’ is one of the best songs ever. Period. Part of the beauty (for me) is Paul going from ‘Why Don’t We Do It in the Road’ to ‘I Will’ (back to back.) Legends only! 🫶🏽
Great reaction. I love the diversity of styles on the White Album...and there are some real obscure tracks on it, which is rare for The Beatles because their music is so well known.
I have been listening to this album for 50 years…seeing you react to it reminds me what a masterpiece it is. Thanks! I encourage you to listen a few dozen more times, it just gets better!
I grew up on the Beatles - saw them on Ed Sullivan at age 4. My 7 older sibs brought in all the music of the 60’s. Can’t tell you how fortunate I was. I always loved White Album because it’s the first time you really heard the guys as individuals and each one was badass. George was always around but I got to know him with this album. Glorious experience.
I'm glad that 'Julia' touched you as much as it did! It was about John's mom, who was hit by a car and killed when he was just 18. His uncle George Smith and Aunt Mimi raised him after they got custody from John's mom and father. George Smith passed away when John was 15. John's father left him when he was a kid. George Smith taught John how to read, draw and paint, and bought him his first mouth organ. Julia was also into music and played a ukelele. So John had a rough childhood, was a violent youth, and a bully in school. He was able to convert that energy into creative song writing.
Since my name is Julia, dad used to tell me when I was younger he called up the Beatles and told them to write a song about me and I used to tell everyone the Beatles wrote a song especially for me 🥹
@@juliad7825 Julia is one of my favorite names for women. I actually talked to John soon after he passed in a channeling session conducted by my sister, who is a medium. I know many don't believe in that sort of thing, but it all seemed very real. He talked about the Earth changes coming. I've also learned to be a channel, but I'm not as proficient at it.
Love how open minded you are, more UA-cam critics need to understand that alot of music needs time to grow on you, ur doing a great job with this album so far, also nice job catching hidden meanings behind songs like blackbird and piggies right away, I was too taken away by how nice blackbirds sounded to think it was about something that serious for a while
They had evolved and grown instrumentally by this time. The connection between the songs makes this album exciting to listen to I've been a Beatles fan for 60 yrs. I enjoy your reactions. It makes me happy to see their music live on thanks 😊 see
As usual, awesome reaction! Authentic and real review, and whether anyone agrees or disagrees with you, nobody can ask for anything more than that. And you definitely got it right. The White Album was more a collection of 4 separate points of view as opposed to one cohesive mindset. It is not only my favorite Beatles album, but alongside the album "Physical Graffiti" by Led Zeppelin, my two favorite albums of all time. I hope you still can do the Led Zeppelin journey. Peace
Oh, that was classic! Your interspliced video of the "Her Majesty" reaction was so funny! Thank you for covering that and you gotta love that the Beatles threw that in after the "glory" of "The End" because it just shows their sense of humor and that they never, ever take themselves too seriously. I really enjoyed that, Darius! Bravo, lad!
I love your videos!! I can tell you are a very smart guy with great ears!! You're great at describing!!! Well done sir, keep up the wonderful content!! :)
just some lore n stuff incase you didn't know 👍👍👍 Bungalow Bill was about an actual guy they knew in India who would go out hunting n stuff, the song was made to make fun of him, I forget the exact terminology but for that tracks chorus they got everyone in the room to do a group vocal too which is kinda fun Martha My Dear is about Paul's dog whose name is Martha Blackbird IS about the Civil Rights Movements, during the Beatlemania era they also refused to play to segregated crowds which was pretty progressive for the time Don't Pass Me By was the first song Ringo ever wrote so even though it's not one of the best it has a novelty I can respect Why Don't We Do It In The Road was inspired by Paul seeing two monkeys have sex in India and being "inspired" by how free they were Julia is about John's dead mother, when he says "ocean child" in the song it's referencing Yoko, her name translates to 'ocean child'
Amazing reaction video! Loving your Beatles reaction videos -- hope you will share more of them for other Beatles albums. You have superb musical instincts, picking up on subtle aspects that I may have heard too but never registered or verbalized. Watching them makes me re-live the first time I heard the album, breathing fresh life into the songs. Thank you and please keep going with your Beatles odyssey. A beautiful mess -- perfect description for this album. The weirdness of The White album is part of its charm that distinguishes it, once one has listened to it a few times.
Darius, I'm so glad I stumbled onto your channel. The Beatles are absolutely remarkable & it's terrific to watch & listen to you discover them & truly appreciate them.
George did write while my guitar gently weeps and that is him singing but that is Eric Clapton on lead guitar. Love your reactions BTW, you're doing great
Yo real shit White Album ain't straightforward bro it gets wierd and strange but IMO that's what makes it the best. They all were at their peak in '68 IMO. Playing, writing, vocally. Album is straight fire
"I do wanna sit here and give George my credit" Duh 😂 he one of the greatest artists of all time. But it's valid to discount him until the later albums but later albums and his solo career is Top Tier music I mean his first solo album genius.
"the white album" is THE best r&r album ever produced. the songs flow real well into one another, they are varied and fun to listen to and there's some cool and wild surprises to keep you entertained throughout. the album takes you on a magical musical journey through the history of music. there's just no r&r album like it. thanks for the video.
To my ears, the “Woo-woo-wooing” part on Back In The U.S.S.R” was the just band tipping their hat to Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys…and the lyric structure itself behind the “woo-woo’s” references The Beach Boys’ “California Girls” as well. On the whole, I’ve always felt that hidden within the four vinyl sides of The White Album, is a truly epic single disc. With the rest of the tracks being just curious outtakes and studio joking around.
Why Don't We Do It in the Road’ and ‘I Will’ were sung by the same guy (Paul), and that's one of the main reasons why I think he is probably the best singer ever.
21:53 you’re right bro. this album isnt like an abbey road. the beatles called it “the personal album”. paul with his music, lennon with his music, also george and ringo. the story behind was each member has less chemistry and interest to each other. ringo had left the band when it recorded. but he came back. but because of that. this album has it owns characteristic, varieties music, inovation, and it always blown my mind
George brought in Eric Clapton to do the solo work on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. I think it was in an old guitar mag interview he was asked about it and replied along the lines of 'sic' 'I was so high I really don't remember'.
When you heard the lyric "The walrus is Paul" and you looked at the camera and said "What?!". Proper made me laugh because that's what everyone did when they heard this song lol.
Thank you! I sometimes forget how much I love the Beatles and listening to your reaction makes me feel like how I first felt when listening to the records. What I'd give up to experience that again
my favorites from this album are everybodys got something to hide except for me and my monkey, happiness is a warm gun, dear prudence, julia, revolution 1 all fire
Darius, my hat is off to you for doing a reaction video to the White Album. Musically, this album is all over the road and is totally disjointed. But that’s what makes it stand apart from most Beatles albums that were the epitome of cohesion. The White Album has some classic music that gets lost in the confusion of the album. And for many of us that’s the special appeal of this album. I will say it’s tough listening through all the edits of these songs when I’m used to hearing them all the way through
George has one of the hardest Beatles songs of all time with ITS ALL TOO MUCH from Yellow Submarine. Yeah George had A+ songs for the most part and he has the best solo album. All Things Must Pass is a masterpiece. A backlog of songs played by his friends who happen to be world class musicians and produced by a guy addicted to everything and a wall of sound. The jam side may be a gateway drug to phish or king gizzard and the lizard wizard.
I appreciate anyone who is able to recognize how The Beatles were extraordinary, there wasn't anything better and won't probably won't be... Anyway I would recommend to start from first records to latest ones to recognize how they were quickly progressing from boy's rock'n'roll band to a most influential band in music history ;-)
Amazing. That excitement you're feeling is exactly how I felt back in the day. I don't think any albums were ever as anticipated as these Beatles albums.
Really enjoy watching your reactions to Beatles' songs. I'm 69 years old, a Beatles fan and musician. A few additions/corrections: (1) "Back in the USSR" is the Beatles paying homage to the style of beach boys songs; (2)In "while my guitar gently weeps" (agree, great song) the guitar solo is played by Eric Clapton; (3) "Blackbird" , confirmed by Paul, is a song offering encouragement to a black woman during the time of racial strife in 1960s America. Paul reaffirmed a few years ago: "This was really a song from me to a black woman, experiencing these problems in the States: 'Let me encourage you to keep trying, to keep your faith; there is hope. '" Take another look at some of the lyrics "you are only waiting for this moment to be free" and "take these broken wings and learn to fly." Also in England, the word "bird" is slang for a girl or woman.
Ringo very briefly quit the band and the drumming on Back in the USSR is Paul. The song is a play on the Beach Boys California Girls, continuing Paul's playful back and forth with Brian Wilson. Martha My Dear haunts me in a deep way even though I know full well it is about Paul's sheepdog Martha. (I'm guessing the "look what you've done" part is about her peeing on the rug)
About "Gideon's Bible" in "Rocky Raccoon": In many hotel-rooms around the world, including a great many in the United States, the Bibles that you find in night-stand drawers were placed there by an organization called "the Gideons". The Gideons gave themselves the mission to distribute Bibles. You may also encounter the Gideons in person, handing out smaller, pocket-sized books, which combine the New Testament with the Book of Psalms. So, anyway, Rocky Raccoon was in rented lodging, and there he found a Bible placed by the Gideons.
You are so right to have a difficult time reacting to this album the first time out. It takes some digesting. I’m the youngest of seven and I was seven when this arrived under the Christmas tree in ‘68. It basically lands at the intersection of Aesop’s Fables and Grimms’ Fairy Tales.
Really enjoying these Beatles reactions budd 👍👍 they’re my favourite band of all and I’ve heard these albums more times than most and I’m still getting excited, anxious and exhilarated with you 😆 great job 👏
But you're lucky you got to MISS Her Majesty. It was designed to be a surprise track that fans might miss the first few times they listened to the album, because it was not listed on the album cover and had sizeable silence after The End so you would think the album was over. That's how it should have been on the CDs too.
very excited for you to hear disc 2, probably the greatest collection of songs ever made, literally in my opinion one of the most influential group of tracks in music history! disc 1 was a tough listen for me too but it ages like fine wine whenever you relisten. but the second half of the white album, whew!

Why the hell did you listen to Abbey Road first?🤪
Disc two has longer tracks, it's a lot looser. Disc one is just an endless parade, one killer after the other in a variety of genres.
Why the hell do you use itunes??? Apple music and Spotify are way better, and don't have weird right wing rap at the top of the charts😂😂
The refrain is a direct reference to the Beach Boy's "California Girls"
The connection, other than Paul being a huge fan of the Beach Boys, is Mike Love, who was and is a member of the Beach Boys was at the ashram with the Beatles at that time.
The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds was revolutionary.
A reference of chuck Berry’s Back in the USA
Rumor has it that Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys added to that Harmony
Apparently they didn’t want Gently Weeps on the album until George invited Clapton to play the guitar
White Album is better than Abbey Road. (both are masterpieces)
Agreed. I prefer the original everything. I was a Beatlemanic from the age of 2 and listened to them in real time ... They were the soundtrack of my childhood.

"Julia" is about John Lennon''s late mother. Very deep, sad, but beautiful John Lennon song. Wow.
Actually its about yoko too “ocean child” means yoko ono
Unlike Paul, John never got over his mother’s death.
@@futurereflections4097 How do you know that Paul got over his mother’s death any easier than John?
@@MsAppassionata That's what I was thinking. Paul wrote Let It Be about his own mother after having an emotional dream about her.

Blackbird WAS indeed written as an Ode to the USA Civil Rights movement of the 60's. It meant a lot to Paul :)

Thank you 🙏🏾 The Beatles have done so much for me in terms of opening up my mind to a world of music outside of Hip-Hop, I'm glad you can feel that passion!

Your Reaction to Martha My Dear is so spot on. Everyone discounts that song. That song is Pure Heat and one of my favorite Beatles songs 🔥🔥🔥🔥
It is written in a Stride Piano style, one of the precursors to rock and roll and rhythm and blues. It was a style from the 1920s, just after jazz started being a thing. Martha was Paul's dog.
@@themoviedealers lol your preaching to the choir brother been a Beatle head since like 5 years old 😅
@@themoviedealersStride piano is a bit different. Right about the dog tho
It’s about Paul’s sheepdog Martha
@@joecummings9662 your talking to a Beatlemaniac sir. I think that makes it an even more poignant love song.
Happiness is a warm Gun is John Lennon, it is one of his best vocals ever, listen to it again and just listen to the vocals especially in the last part
It's a 10 out of ten vocal and instrumental performance. I absolutely love that track.
White album and warm gun refer to Lennons heroin addiction also listen to his "Cold Turkey" about withdrawal not on any album along with " Instant Karma"
"John definitely redeemed himself after whatever the fuck bungalows Bill was" LOL
The analysis checks out
That's Clapton on lead guitar on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. George, sensing that having a guest sit in would put everyone on their best behavior, invited his fiend Eric to the session. It worked.
I can't begin to tell you how happy it makes me to see how much you enjoy Dear Prudence.
The song is about Mia Farrow.
@@cmonman3639 bird isn't dis-respectful. What are you on about?
This album shows off the Beatles ability to write songs in several genres: rock and roll, ballads, music hall sing alongs, country western, blues music, whimsical tunes, lullabies, pop, and music and one song in old-timey style like an old 78 rpm record.
Piggies is a metaphor, a critique of rich people who can never get enough.
George Orwellian Animal Farm type stuff going on there and it makes the track incredible to listen to for that
I love the “as they eat their bacon” part. It shows the cutthroat critique in an equally in your face/subtle way at the same time
Like in animals by pink Floyd also inspired by animal farm
Love George's wit and humour on this song, protest through satire
not "rich people" per se -- but greedy/corrupt people -- maybe politicians -- maybe cops -- maybe beaurocrats ... maybe the mob ... pigs.
Yes. Remember "Taxman" from 'Revolver' also written by George.
The “child” on Bungalow Bill is Johns wife Yoko. Also, the guitar solos on While My Guitar were done by Eric Clapton
better than Bungalow Bill is the song "What’s the New Mary Jane", but they didn't put it on the album.
John and Yoko weren't married until 1969. It is Yoko on the track, though.
It warms my heart to see your generation reacting to the classic rock of my day. I cant wait fo your reaction to Helter Skelter😂❤
Better than Helter Skelter is "Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child - Official Psychodelic Video. So great.
Still trash
@strikerbowls791 I get it because it's definitely very low on my list of favorite White Album songs. Thats partly due to it intentionally written to be a sort of kids song, and any song written to be a kids song is not going to be my favorite, but it was successful in what it set out to accomplish. You have to at least admit that the final "Bill!" which leads into While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a pretty cool transition.
The Bill in Bungalow Bill was an American named Richard A. Cooke III not a British dude.
An excellent Animal Rights song
Dear Prudence was about Mia Farrow’s younger sister Prudence who accompanied them to India. Supposedly she went so deep into a meditative trance that they had trouble bringing her out of it.
I read she had been sexually harrassed by someone (Maharishi?) and was feeling upset and hesitatent to leave her bungalow. So John coaxed her out by grabbing a guitar and starting sing and compose this song spontaneously...
@@Ideas4GoogleI think that rumor has been refuted since then. My understanding is that she was thought to be overly serious about her studies and meditation.
Yes the Marahishi was sexually assaulting many female acolytes.@@Ideas4Google
Martha My Dear is Paul singing about his dog Martha. She was a sheepdog , he took her everywhere, sometimes you can see her in pictures of the Beatles.
The Guitarist for While My Guitar Gently Weeps is Eric Clapton. Look up the song and add Prince solo to the search.
Gotta advertise the prince version
Every beatle fan has to watch it at least once a month and keep reminding everyone around them that this solo exists 😂
Imagine thinking Prince compares to Clapton. The George Harrison memorial concert version, with Clapton, is much better.
It still had a lot of great songs..best when listened to from begining to the end.
That is wild to me, because as a Baby Xer, I was always given to understand this was a highly respected/artsy album!
@@reanimated as a Gen Zer I thought the same until I looked into a lot of Beatle rankings
Your face during Wild Honey Pie was correct
Edit: i didnt realize you were only doing disc 1! Im sitting here waiting for Yer Blues to blow your mind
The Beatles to me are like 4 seasons in one day. Just when you think you can describe them they change the scene, and then again and again, and there's something about each season we all love. Love your reaction to this amazing band.
I've always loved the way Back in the USSR transitions into Dear Prudence
yes. Its a memorable transition with two killer songs. Dear Prudence is a complete masterpiece. I often think of it.
It reminds me of how on my first listen of Sgt peppers it took a while for me to realize the title song had ended and help from my friends started.

17:18 “sounds like the end of life!” Brooooooo, that analogy 🎯
I’m glad that not only did you go back and hear “Her Majesty” but you showed us the reaction. I think what people want most is to make sure you hear EVERYTHING! God forbid if you cut off “Helter Skelter” early though, I can’t help you there, you’re on your own! 😆😆😆
Yeah, if you cut off "Helter Skelter", then you must go over and listen to "Mr. Manson" by Klaatu. Many people thought Klaatu might be the Beatles. It wasn't.
“Who is this little kid?!” as a reaction to Yoko’s singing is so funny to me
George really got into the zone with his writing the last few albums.
Love the piano intro on while my guitar gently weeps, it’s Paul... Really enjoying your Beatles reactions!
Paul’s bass line on Glass Onion is so gnarly
Your love of The Beatles is infectious ! 😄
This album simply shows their combined versatility, wow, greatness, IMHO. A masterpiece.

I love you geeking out any time they start to harmonize. Wish you'd do the second disc to hear Revolution 9 lol
Bravo, lad!

Bungalow Bill was about an actual guy they knew in India who would go out hunting n stuff, the song was made to make fun of him, I forget the exact terminology but for that tracks chorus they got everyone in the room to do a group vocal too which is kinda fun
Martha My Dear is about Paul's dog whose name is Martha
Blackbird IS about the Civil Rights Movements, during the Beatlemania era they also refused to play to segregated crowds which was pretty progressive for the time
Don't Pass Me By was the first song Ringo ever wrote so even though it's not one of the best it has a novelty I can respect
Why Don't We Do It In The Road was inspired by Paul seeing two monkeys have sex in India and being "inspired" by how free they were
Julia is about John's dead mother, when he says "ocean child" in the song it's referencing Yoko, her name translates to 'ocean child'

Love to see some praise for "Piggies". Such an underrated song
So many people seem to hate it. I've loved it from the first time I heard it.
Love it when you sing along 'Dear Prudence'.
Why Don't We Do It in the Road’ and ‘I Will’ were sung by the same guy (Paul), and that's one of the main reasons why I think he is probably the best singer ever.
21:53 you’re right bro. this album isnt like an abbey road. the beatles called it “the personal album”. paul with his music, lennon with his music, also george and ringo.
the story behind was each member has less chemistry and interest to each other.

but because of that. this album has it owns characteristic, varieties music, inovation, and it always blown my mind
Your reactions and the way you articulate yourself crack me up 😂😂😂
George brought in Eric Clapton to do the solo work on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. I think it was in an old guitar mag interview he was asked about it and replied along the lines of 'sic' 'I was so high I really don't remember'.
My favorite Beatles album.
When you heard the lyric "The walrus is Paul" and you looked at the camera and said "What?!".

28:10 You just expressed the feelings of every brother who ever heard this song haha
Amazing. That excitement you're feeling is exactly how I felt back in the day. I don't think any albums were ever as anticipated as these Beatles albums.
Really enjoy watching your reactions to Beatles' songs. I'm 69 years old, a Beatles fan and musician. A few additions/corrections:
(1) "Back in the USSR" is the Beatles paying homage to the style of beach boys songs;
(2)In "while my guitar gently weeps" (agree, great song) the guitar solo is played by Eric Clapton;
(3) "Blackbird" , confirmed by Paul, is a song offering encouragement to a black woman during the time of racial strife in 1960s America.
The line "You were in a car crash and you lost your hair" always leaves me speechless 💀
I love your Beatles reactions. You are a good listener and insightful and you have good taste and you’re reactions are honest and authentic
Beautiful mess, about the best description I've ever heard. Thank you.
The ending of Bungalow Bill "Make it stop!" 🤣🤣
I like the lyrics "He went out tiger hunting with his elephant and gun. In case of accidents, he always took his mum."
Oh man, SO happy to see you jamming to Piggies. One of my favourite Beatles songs.
