How to save cauliflower, broccoli & Brassica seeds.

- We were very pleased with the "60 Days" cauliflower this year so let 5 plants go to flower so we could save some seed.. The same process can be used for saving Broccoli & other Brassica seeds as well..
It is important to just have one variety of brassica oleracea (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards & kale) flowering at once or you could end up with some cross pollination..
Saving seeds is easy to do & a fun way to get the kids involved in the gardening process.. They really enjoy then planting the saved seeds & watching them grow.. They are also more likely to eat them we have found ;)

Have a great one everyone.
Very neat. I have discovered that I have a great affinity for seed saving :) I did not expect to enjoy it so much.
Thanks.. I ended up crushing all the pods in the end & doing it very similar to her :) Got about ½ the saved amount again from the leftovers on the plant.. Most have been shared around with the give away winners & a seeds sharing group over here :)
Hope all are well & have a great one,
Rob :)
Nice one. Good to see the little fingers helping out as well.
Due to "inbreeding depression" it's a good idea to add in some seeds from another source every few years just too keep your new plants healthy.. This is something I have only just started to learn about over the past few months..
Hope you get to save loads of seed..
Cheers & have a great one..
Hope it helps someone out over here Wayne..
& thank you :)
Have a great one..
Great video Rob and Keira.
These guys really give a lot of seeds for one plant.
Thankyou for the video!! I have a broccoli that's flowering now that lasted in the hoop house all winter.. can't wait👍
Nice one Laura. Have you tried nibbling on the flowers as well?
@@RobsAquaponics not yet..it's so beautiful..I am enjoying my asparagus..I have mary washington..planted cabage & brussel sprouts yesterday..have a great day🌟🌻
We have eaten the real young ones when we pull the flowers off for salads but haven't tried them by themselves.. Have had a munch on the mustard seeds & pods, really liked the heat thye have :)
Cheers & have a great one..
I let four broccoli go to seed this year and will try it too. Thanks for sharing this.
Great vid on collecting seed. Can't wait to use it!! Thank you.
Good stuff Rob keep em coming. Our gardening is over for this year well growing that is. Had side ways rain most of the day not nice. Had a squash 2 kilo something over 4 pounds. Very nice roasted and good soup. The boss is working on something new for it tonight. At 5 franks a kilo I will be growing it again. I think we have another 8 or 9 on the vine. And yep I am saving seeds from them.
Got about ½ that again Dale when I finished off the rest of the plant.. Probably have saved ourselves a fair amount saving our own seeds... Then again, I am a bit of a seed addict & have bought a fair amount that have never seen the soil as well :/
All the best...
Have never tried to grow one from seed sorry.. Had a bit of a look around & it looks like the rough seed needs to be cracked then the kernel inside the seed is taken out.. Most people recommend planting the kernel into a small pot then refrigerating it.. The kernel needs a prolonged period of time to be able to shoot.. When I did a search there are a few pages that come up that say fairly much well the same thing..
Hope that helps a bit & you get to grow one from seed :)
All the best,
Rob..
Not bad for just one plant... Got about ½ that amount again with what was left on the plant.. Only just planted out first Rukola/rocket here this year so will be interesting to see how it goes.. Will see how your method goes hen it comes time to save the seeds..
Cheers Jay & have a great one :)
Thank you for this. I went through 3 drawn out videos and my patients was running out. This is short sweet and to the point.
Am glad it helped some.
Happy Growing 🥦🥦
Hi there.. Sounds like you get much the same weather as us..
I store our seeds in clip seal bags inside a tin that's kept in a cool spot in the house.. Gets very humid here so I think that the plastic bags are best..
Could store them in the fridge but just don't have enough room :/
Hope that helps a bit..
Rob.
A great point made about cross pollination Rob. Koo, yellow/gold nail polish rocks chook. Will have to make a note to myself to find a way to shield individual plants from cross pollination.
We have grown broccoli from saved seeds before & they went fine.. Not to good to re save the same brassica seed over & over as the genetics become a bit dodgy.. It is a good idea to introduce new genetics into the mix every second year from what I have been told.. If you search for "Inbreeding Depression" you will find more information on the subject.. Hope that helps..
Hi Rob not sure about the variety I will find out I don't think I used them all so I may still have some left will let you know. Hope they are not f1 so I need to find out for my self. Yeah heating is on. Keep the vids coming think I am a garden junkie. And we have long winters. But I have been thinking about trying to grow mushrooms for a wile might give that a try over winter. Keep cool.
I read that some people use mini mesh "houses" filled with purpose bread flies to help pollinate certain varieties at a time to stop crossing of varieties David..Apparently it works fairly well for other plants like carrots as well :)
Cheers sir :)
I find it most enjoyable Jared & relaxing as well.. Koo thinks we are too quiet while we do it what ever that means :/ :D
Cheers Sir..
Great seed harvest!
Best way to go I think Mr Adubb :) Still have a 10L bucket of pigeon pea pods starring at me that needs to be done :/
Cheers to all :)
Hope it comes in handy :)
Cheers..
Okay, you can't start calling your chooks chickens because I've started calling my chickens chooks.....lolol. I have a lot of brassicas growing now (southeast US), and this will help tremendously when we harvest seeds :)
Mushies are one thing I really want to have another crack at.. Is on the list & am slowly working down towards them..
Is a very nice 29°C here today & really should be out getting a few more beds ready :/
Cheers
This is probably a stupid question, but I'm wanting to know about part of the process that I can't find the answer to. Most of our blossoms are gone and have turned to pods. They're still pretty green pods. Do I keep watering? At what point can I cut them down and hang them to dry? I'm tired of watering them daily!
JudkinsJourney Hi there & great question. I think that you'll find you can ease back a bit on the water as they are not really in an active growth period once the flowers have finished. I would water them every 2nd or 3rd day until enough pods have turned brown for you to gather all the seeds required to meet your needs.
Hope that helps some.
Good luck with the seed harvest : )
Rob/.
We're doing container gardening, so we have been watering every day, you still maybe every other day? (Thanks for the reply by the way!)
JudkinsJourney Every other should be OK as long at the pot is large enough. If the pot has holes in the base you could sit the pot in a tray & let the water wick up. Don't know if that helps any.
They were all over it :D She loves getting in & helping with the seeds.. Always seem to lose a few for her collection ;)
Cheers
Hello Rob.
You have been saving seed for a while, I would like to know how you store yours? I have not been doing it long, Less then one year with Okay results.
As far as weather I think we are similar heat humidity and mild winter no snow lucky to get a frost. 27* North If I remember from sailing. I am saving in refrigerator. Just wondering,
Thank You.
Was most pleased with it.. Hope we get as much from the broccoli & mustard now :)
Cheers Sir..
Good one Dave.. What variety were those ones ?
Have 3 spaghetti squash that have just popped here.. Need to get their final home all sorted out now as it won't be long before they out grow their pots.. :/
Cheers & stay warm..
k- i just went a head and ordered some good seeds and i will save from those plants :)
thanks again!
If they are Hybrid they won't be the best to save seeds from as you don't know what traits they will throw back to... I don't save any seeds from plants I'm not sure of Jodi just in case..
Hope that helps a little..
More than we need I think George :)
Cheers Mate..
Thank you .All is well.
Howdy there rob sir. Just asking when collecting the seeds, would the pods dry up whilst still on the plant before collecting the seeds? Just that I am near the end of the cycle of broccolis that I am currently growing and is the first time that I will be collecting the seeds of them and am curious if I should allow them to be dried out or continue watering as some are still producing some broccoli or some of them off and wait till they dry out
+Phillip Souter Gardens (86 Gardens) /
Hi Phillip & sorry for missing your post mate.
I find that the plant will keep producing more flowers even though there are some pods in various stages of drying out. I keep watering the plants so the bees & other beneficial insects have for forage flowers. I like the pods to dry out a bit on the plant before taking them off.
Hope that helps you out some & you got to save some seeds mate.
Cheers.
thanks for that rob, I had done that where I continued to water and leave the pods onto the plant until they dried a bit, then cut them off, the pods didn't open but I was able to break them up and take out the seeds, I have gained 10s of thousands off seeds from I think it was 9 plants I grew.
+Phillip Souter Gardens (86 Gardens)
Nice one Phillip. Doesn't take many pods to give you more than you need.
I had realised after this was my first attempt to grow from seed to collect seeds for generation of broccoli, I have given some to someone anyhow, I might save them in case of other people would like some as well
Glad to of helped :)
Have a great one :)
hi Rob, does this work....have you tried to grow them? cheers.
best video ever
Cheers Mr Nothing. 👍😁
At what stage of their growth do they produce the seeds, is it like some plants that only produce seeds during the second year?
Thanks
great! thaks for the info. it was much needed! will it make a difference if the plants i have i got from the store and i don't really know what the breed is? what if its a some sort of hybrid?
(i don't know the names because they where end of season discount plants, they had no little tags on them.)
That's likely $50 or more worth of seed. You only get a small amount in the bottom of a packet for 3 or 4 $.
Just one plant is. Ok for self polination and get seeds ?
One plant is OK if you're doing it only once. You will need to get other genetics in there by having a few flower at once or you could get some inbreeding depression set in & give you mutated plants down the line.
Hope that helps some.
Great help! Thanks.
Which plant this is
As mentioned at the start, the seeds being saved are cauliflower but the same method works for most brassicas. 👍
Super nice
Thank you & hope it helped.
Happy growing.
Strange newbie question: Are those seed capsules called siliques?
As far as I know they are. 👍
Didn't know that at the time though.
Cheers & happy growing.
how do you avoid the cross-pollination between cauliflower, broccoli & Brassica varieties? won't The Offspring next year be a crossbred?thanks
+Billy Gaudet Hi Billy.
We only let one lot of plants flower at one time. That way the seeds should stay pure unless a neighbour we don't know about is also letting some go to flower.
Hope that helps some.
RobBobs Backyard Farming thank you
+Billy Gaudet
No problem Billy.
Cheers mate.
Will the seeds grow if you take the edible part out?
You would need a complete seed if you wanted it to germinate Jeremy. 👍
Cheers mate.
Loads John.. Hoping the mustards & broccoli give the same amount :)
Have a great weekend sir..
What is the process for letting them flower for seed?
You just leave a head on & let the flowers form with brassicas. With cauliflower, you can take most of the head off & leave a few florets & let them go to flower.
Thank you!!
Hi Rob, howz life? I wanted to ask about an unusual fruit which is known as nectarine in Netherlands. I love the fruit n thinking of carrying some with me in India. But I would like to plant a seed in my garden in India? Plz suggest some advice.
That would be great. Thank you :)
So... wait till they look dried out? Mine are green
It's best to wait for them to dry right out. 👍👍
@Rob Bob's Aquaponics & Backyard Farm I still have one cauliflower and a few broccoli growing in this heat. I have more questions, where can I reach you directly?
@@Galatians516 Through the comment section under videos is the best place at the moment. I'm flat out in the real world at the moment but am checking the comment notifications daily.
OK so here is an interesting question considering your other comment to me. Do you remember where you saw about these wonder flies.
We love to save seeds & didn't have to buy any this year.... $Cha-ching$ :))
:D How about "the girls" :D
Hope you get to save loads of seeds.. Just be sure to only let certain varieties flower at one time or you may end up with crosses.. If you want more info I can PM you a link..
Cheers :)
Te carrot one tip I got from a YT clip from an Allotment channel in the UK... ua-cam.com/video/8D5TZbbRnJw/v-deo.html
& read about the people using the same method the other day when researching inbreeding depression somewhere.. Cant find the info on the IB Depression at the moment though sorry Sir :/
Hope that helps David...
