  • In this episode of the Beyond The Seams Podcast, Molly Elizabeth Agnew chats to sex historian Kate Lister (and host of the Betwixt The Sheets podcast!) about the world-famous 19th century ‘Madame X’ portrait by John Singer Sargent and the black dress that aided in ruining the reputation of a Parisian socialite.
What were Victorian attitudes to sexuality during the late 19th century? Were Parisians really more open than the Brits? What does this scandal tell us about society at the time?

I love that painting so much. ❤ Victoria's painting for Albert was so sweet of her.

There's a 90s sitcom (Third Rock from the Sun) that has aliens trying to figure life out on Earth. In one episode, they're trying to understand the difference between "art" and "smut." It's hilarious.

I wonder if the malice was started by a rival influencer and others jumped on board

Charles II's other mistresses were high society ladies though... is Nell the only one with a nude portrait?

She may have been (begrudgingly) accepted in high society because of her husband, but the lower classes would have been freer to moralize about a woman with a checkered past (and present). The strap fallen suggestively as if it was barely remaining on her body, the lavender powdered skin, her clutching her fan near her pubic area, it definitely was suggestive. I wonder why Sargant chose to paint her in such a manner. He himself was gay, so he wasn't looking at her with the typical male gaze. Perhaps he was making a statement on her more liberal sexuality himself. If so, he would face criticism which perhaps he wasn't expecting. At any rate, it's a brilliant painting and has a fascinating back story. I've seen it at the Met and it's even more beautiful in person. I get why he painted her in profile... it was her finest angle.

Wasn't her reputation already shaky before this?
