This song to me is a metaphor for the things in life that help to keep us safe or have saved our lives during a crisis, it could have been written 2,000 years ago and it would be completely relevant. That is the genius of MK.

@@ONESNZER0S This song is inspired by the American Civil War. Every MK's songs are poems with a metaphor of the life. Mark often leave to the listeners the opportunity to search his own moral or meaning. Mark is a rafined poet and sublime songwriter.

Very few can emote with a guitar like Knopfler can.

Although no one is quite like Chet Atkins, or Mark Knopfler for that matter, they both have an exquisite sensitivity of touch on the instrument.

    Hunted down, I came upon
A place of ferns and grass
    Gathered to a redbud tree
    And now their footsteps pass
    Where I crouch in dread
    Discovery my certain death
Her leaves reaching for my head
    As I suspend my breath
Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me
Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me
Those days of fear are gone
Yet I am pledged to her
    As to my only one
    My lovely protector
Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me
Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me
Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me
Redbud tree, shelter me, shelter me

Mark Knopfler’s music is so great because there is such a sense of deep meaning behind the lyrics as well as multiple interpretations.
A red bud tree blooms in the early part of spring I believe April through May. It has a heart shaped leaf and the flowers are absolutely beautiful and I believe they are even edible.
The first impression I got when I listen to this song for the first time was that it was an animal that had been either shot or wounded or just plainly being hunted and ran to hide when it found this red bud tree. After the hunters lost it, it possibly made its home underneath there afterwards because it found safety there....for the rest of its life.

This album deals with the early days of America. Redbud trees grow only in the northern part of US. So this is about a slave running north, finally escaping the south, only to succumb under the beauty of their tree.

I have had a difficult past, but I am now with my redbud tree. The protection she has given me to defend me from the demons in my own head are reflected in the words of this song. Every time I hear it makes me realise how much I owe her. I don't know what inspiration mark had for writing those words, but they are perfect for how I feel for my lovely protector.
